Hosts Amanda Barker and Marco Timpano kick off this episode of The Insomnia Project with a delightful surprise: an unexpected snow day on April 2nd! They reminisce about the sheer, unadulterated joy of snow days as children, recalling the excitement of building snow forts and sledding down hills, a stark contrast to the slightly less magical adult experience of a late-season snowfall. Their conversation meanders through urban observations, pausing to appreciate the often-overlooked presence of fire hydrants and their potential for artistic interpretation. Amanda and Marco then shine a spotlight on the wonderful art of Michelle Miracle, encouraging listeners to explore her unique style. The episode takes a culinary turn as they delve into a spirited debate over the merits of olives and capers, discussing their distinct flavors and culinary applications. This leads to a mouthwatering discussion about a memorable journey to Tottenham, Ontario, in pursuit of the perfect cannoli. They vividly describe the allure of authentic cannoli and the charm of the small town, emphasizing the importance of comfort food during the lingering cold. The conversation weaves in practical tips for staying warm during the unexpected snow, highlighting the comfort of cozy blankets and hot beverages. Amanda and Marco conclude the episode by thanking listeners for joining them on this snowy, cannoli-fueled adventure, urging them to share their own snow day memories and comfort food favorites on social media. They remind listeners to check out Michelle Miracle's art and, of course, to try and get some sleep. In speaking with my two guests, they shared stories of the three generations of writers in the family including, Irene's mother, Wilma, followed by my guest, Irene and her son Brendan. Brendan is an award winning graphic novel/picture book author and acquiring editor at Blackstone Publishing where he also runs the TV and Film Division even made notice of having his maternal grandmothers published books on his desk. Brendan shares that he was always supported and encouraged by his family with his passion for comic books which he started writing and drawing caricatures at a young age.In time, Irene expressed "that the family was moving in a different direction and the divorce was almost inevitable." Irene continues, "I'm highly emotionally intelligent and I finally found my tribe. I found people who spoke my language." This all occurred once she went back to school for her Masters Degree in Counseling, and later on became a social worker. Brendan raves about his childhood as a latch key kid. He loved growing up in Connecticut. And now as a father, he appreciates even more what it takes for parents to raise their children. And now he's learned even more about what his mother was going through raising the four Deneen children. Both Irene and Brendan claim to be emotionally intelligent-they are very good at listening to others, which Brendan feels that "not many people listen to one another these days." Brendan has always been there for his mom as a sounding board. Irene says " Brendan was my listening post." When she needed to talk, she call Brendan. They have a special bond for sure. They respect one another.Irene Deneen Murray: Irene Deneen Murray grew up in the 50's, an era when a woman could be a nurse, teacher or secretary. She chose teacher because it pleased her mother. In truth the first half of her life was devoted to taking care of or pleasing her mother. At age 50 having raised 4 kids in a Hollywood -worthy suburb, Irene became a divorcee and learned to love being more adventurous than she had previously ever imagined. By then she was working as a social worker having recently earned a Master's Degree in Counseling. Irene loves the natural world and has been a devoted hiker and later a biker, paddler and pretty consistently a practitioner of yoga. She continues these pastimes presently sometimes to the chagrin of her children since they may picture her falling off a cliff, rolling over in her kayak or some other catastrophe. Her children and grandchildren are her greatest achievement. She is a good observer and has insight galore but is sometimes amazed at how each of her children has developed so uniquely. Brendan Deneen is the author of the novelsThe Ninth Circle andThe Chrysalis, as well as the bestselling four-volume Night Night, Groot picture book series for Marvel/Disney. He's also the author of the middle-grade graphic novelGreen Arrow: Stranded for DC Comics; the novels Morbius: Blood Ties and Guardians of the Galaxy: Annihilation:Conquest from Marvel/Titan, and Alien: Uncivil War from 20th Century Studios/Titan. His other graphic novel work includes multiple volumes of Flash Gordon, an original Island of Misfit Toys book, and the original graphic novel Scatterbrain. In addition to his writing, Brendan has been working in the publishing and film/TV industries for twenty-five years, including development jobs with Scott Rudin Productions and Miramax, as well as editorial and book-to-film jobs with St. Martin's Press and Tor Books. He currently works at Blackstone Publishing, where he's an acquiring editor in addition to running the company's film/TV division, which he created, and where he has dozens of literary projects set up at movie studios, streamers, and networks. His short stories and essays have been published by St. Martin's Press, Reader's Digest Books, 13Thirty Press, and Necro Publications. Fools Fest is KCSU's annual punk festival, always set to happen around April Fools Day! Every year, KCSU gathers local punk and punk-adjacent bands to play on Colorado State University's campus, creating a unique and exciting event for all to enjoy. KCSU's music directors, Mia Templien and Ria Janapati, had the opportunity to sit down with a few of the bands performing for some in-depth interviews. The amalgamation of kids wanting to play in a band but not finding the right people is what created Snow Day. Consisting of Grace Murch, Jack DeStefano, Kenny Barnes, and Bradley Brungardt, Snow Day is a hodgepodge of alternative rock, punk, noise rock, and much more. Murch had never played bass before, DeStefano snagged Barned from Denver, and Brungardt got a call from Snow Day's old drummer, asking him to fill in. They find inspiration in bands like Sonic Youth, Nettspend, and Xaviersobased, and are ready to rock CSU's socks off!
As crazy as it may sound, Snow White is the most controversial movie of the year. It's been getting a lof of bad press, bad feedback and so far not doing so well at the box office. I wasted no time going to the theater to check it out and give my thoughts. Since this is part of my mini pod episodes, these will be less indepth and more of a review. Is Snow White good? Is it bad? Did they at least leave the poisoned apple in?? Tune in to find out. If you're not doing so already, please like and follow Classic American Movies on Instagram and Facebook. I do free movie giveaways, mini movie reviews and more! Also, I decided to dabble in making my own slasher film entitled “Bishop's Day”. Check out the Instagram page for updates.

Experiment: Letting things take as long as they take. Walking Zoey in the ice. "Time crunched athlete" sucks. Figure things out and take back your time! Mindfully doing things, like a Japanese Tea Ceremony. If you have to come in to work, check to see if your CEO is at his/her desk too. ;) Driving in the snow to work! (Rarity in Texas) Getting old sucks, but... Dream car - Toyota Land Cruiser (for the adventure offroad) Creating buffers around your time also protects yourself from yourself. Taking time to pause and think when leaving the house so you don't forget things. Visualizing your next workout, so you don't forget things and also mentally get started on it. I like exploring, hence why I like gravel biking and 4x4 vehicles. Thoughts on older Toyota Land Cruiser vs. modern 4x4 American truck with AWD. Slow living isn't just about protecting yourself from others, it's about protecting yourself from yourself! Doing fewer things, but doing them better. So you have to decide what's most important. Asking yourself who are you doing this for. You or somebody else? "Jeffing". So mindful, so demure. ;) Slowing down helps you to stop forgetting things for your workouts, especially gear and accessories. Some good responses when people push back against you slowing down. Daily reminders to walk slowly and don't talk to much in conversations at work. How I learned to walk slowly all the way back in high school from a powerful Senior. Learning confidence through Marine Corps military school, Texas A&M Corps of Cadets, nightclub bouncer, boxing... You don't need to "be Alpha" when you already have been through stuff and know yourself and your limitations and the limitations of others. Walking meditation is cooooooool. How to do it. Being slow has a calming effect on others. Went swimming after it was 19 degrees Fahrenheit outside. Cut it short due to starting to get hypothermia. There was room on that door! (Titanic). Taking the time to put things in the right place at the right time. Exercise is the foundation block that should be "non-negotiable" I let people pass me on the road so they aren't putting pressure on me to drive faster than I want. You want to get where working out is a habit that is harder to NOT do. "Rest and Digest" IS the state of Zen Flow. Habits where you don't have to think that much keep you in "Rest and Digest" mode. Stoicism is just being tough for being's sake. Gen X stories are true. I pee before driving anywhere so I can enjoy the drive. Do hard things on purpose when it's easy. Could Native shoes be the solution for wet feet getting to work after swimming? The art of keeping your shoes from stinking by showering in them and letting the soap help out. Fenix 8 has flashlight AND voice memos! Taking bike to the shop, drinking an Athletic Brewing Co. non-alcoholic IPA. Pretty good! Why diving watches make for great sports watches - the rotating timing bezel. We have hit "peak smartwatch" and now people want to go back to basics. Training totals for the week and CTL. I broke my chainring! Must be all the powah. Advancements in show making. Typical things to use diving timer bezel for besides working out.

Our story tonight is called Snow Day in the Village, and it follows up on the recent storm that blew threw Nothing Much. It's about checking on neighbors as the drifts pile up, shovels and thick socks. It's also about banana bread, puppy paw prints in the snow, books and blankets, and small acts that connect and protect us. We give to a different charity each week and this week we are giving to Veganuary. Working to encourage people worldwide to try vegan for January and beyond. Need an assist with your sleep? Tonight we're going to enjoy a cozy snow day. Those of you who grew up somewhere with snowy winters will remember that feeling; when you threw back the curtains to see snow, and knew all plans were off. For those who didn't, just know, it was the most delicious release of all pressure. Unlike a sick day, snow days were for everyone… and when the whole city slows down, it gives the nervous system permission, in the most amazing way, to relax. So, let's give ourselves a snow day as we fall asleep tonight, visualising slowly drifting snowflakes. As always, tonight's episode will start with a relaxing introduction from Jessica, before we sink into tonight's Sleep Hypnosis. Want more Sleep Magic?
