'I didn't just want to do a sort of 'me-too' series just for the sake of it. I wanted to have a series concept that I could really get excited about and which would stand out in quite a crowded marketplace as offering something different.' This week, we're flipping the script a bit. Normally, I'd be bringing you an engaging conversation with a business book author, but this week we're exploring an origin story—one that gives you an insight into the inner workings of publishing as an industry and an individual publisher's mind. A successful book series is the closest thing we have to magic in publishing magic. But how do you go about finding the right concept in a crowded marketplace? Here's how our new 6-Minute Smarts series came about, from a series of conversations at Frankfurt to a 30,000-foot exploratory writing sprint to launch. Whether you're a reader, an aspiring author, or simply curious about the publishing world, this episode offers insights and inspiration that you won't want to miss.
'[Olympia's] gorgeous vaulted glass roof feels kind of like a metaphor for the fair itself. Rooted in history, but always looking upwards and outwards.' Something a bit different today: join me for a deep dive into a publisher's experience of London Book Fair 2025. I have been to a LOT of book fairs, but this one was a little different. I'm exploring the issues faced by publishers of all sizes today, navigating challenges such as AI's disruptive potential to the demands of new EU regulations and the current geopolitical chaos, and reflecting on the opportunities they present. Whether you're in the business or simply curious about the world of books, this episode is a behind-the-scenes look at an industry perpetually on the brink of transformation as well as a very personal reflection on how it feels to be part of it.
Julia Hobsbawm and Stefan Stern are joined by John Bond, founder and executive director of Whitefox Publishing, and Toby Mundy, literary agent and former publisher, to explore and evaluate the business of publishing. Against the backdrop of the London Book Fair, they discuss how shifts at book fairs reflect broader industry changes. Toby and John offer an insider's view of the publishing business, from its ongoing challenges to the role of commissioning editors, where the money is, and what makes a book a success. Julia also sits down with Hannah Bickerton, the new Managing Director of Whitefox, to discuss book marketing in an evolving industry and the potential role of AI in publishing's future. Ave Maria University and Ignatius Press have teamed up to offer Ignatius Book Fairs, a Catholic-focused book fair for parents and schools who want to offer their children an alternative to the Scholastic Book Fairs, which have recently become a haven for inappropriate content for children. Today, on “Follow to Lead” we're talking with Fr. Joseph Fessio, SJ, about the current state of book fair content and this new Catholic-based approach. National alternatives to such inappropriate and harmful content have not existed until now, leaving Catholic schools in a difficult position when they want to provide great books to their students. Ignatius Book Fairs has been launched to fill this void, with the ability to ship a high-quality, beautiful and fun book fair anywhere in the United States.

I'm just back from an exhausting, exhilarating few days at London Book Fair. My ears are still ringing slightly, my feet hurt, I need to spend a few days on my own in a darkened room and I can't even tell you how many follow-up actions are on my to-do list – in other words, it was a great Fair. But what does that mean? As publishers, we at Practical Inspiration Publishing are all about selling books, but we don't actually sell our books at book fairs: so what DO we do? Here's an insider's guide to what actually goes on at London Book Fair for book trade professionals and for authors and illustrators, and what you can expect (and what you can't) if you decide to rock up to Olympia next year.

Whitney Clark takes us on a trip down memory lane! Her guest this week is Laura Sharp, the owner of a Gilbert-based pop-up bookstore. Literally, A Bookshop is a children's bookstore that also hosts events for grown-ups! Think the Scholastic Book Fair, but instead of your school gymnasium, events for adults are hosted at wine bars and breweries across the Valley. You can buy a book while drinking a beer or a glass of wine, while also connecting with your fellow readers. Laura shares why she started the events for adults, what it's like owning an independent bookstore, and the magic of introducing kids to books.

Our conversation today for a "Shop Small Saturday" edition of The Valley Today with Carl Knoblock, Virginia District Director of the Small Business Administration featured two small business owners. First, we talked with Victoria Kidd Armstrong, owner of The Hideaway Cafe about what shopping small means to her as a business owner and the power of community. Repeatedly named Winchester's best coffeehouse, Hideaway Cafe sits as a welcome center of sorts, greeting folks visiting Winchester's beautiful Old Town pedestrian walking mall. Located at the intersection of West Cork and South Loudoun (right next to Cork Street Tavern), the café has become the community's living room. The comfortable and welcoming café is an ideal setting for grabbing a quick lunch, enjoying time with friends, settling behind a laptop to work, or holding a casual business meeting over some of the best coffee in town. In addition to offering award-winning coffees and fine teas, Hideaway offers a variety of sandwiches, pastries, breakfast goods, coffee-based cocktails, and more. Stay up to date on events by following them on Facebook. In the second segment, we talked with Christine Patrick, owner of Winchester Book Gallery about what shopping small means to her as a business owner and how the community shapes the way she operates her business and the inventory she carries. The Winchester Book Gallery is a 51-year old, independent, locally-owned bookstore serving the northern Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. As a cornerstone of our community, they offer new books, Local Art, Cards, Book Fairs, and Special Orders. The Book Gallery regularly hosts book signings, book clubs, and community nights. In addition, they offer everyday discounts for teachers and book clubs. The Winchester Book Gallery inspires, informs and amuses customers with compelling book selections and a diverse selection of other merchandise. This week on the podcast we are so incredibly thrilled to welcome Grammy Award-winning musician Aimee Mann! Vanessa recalls the first time that the Bayers worked with Aimee on their old web series and how Jonah got so nervous about a joke they'd written he had to walk out of a taping with her to regain his composure. The three of us also discuss, you guessed, Scholastic Book Clubs and the sheer joy of getting a bundle of books delivered onto your desk by your homeroom teacher as a kid. We also discuss the brilliance of a perfectly crafted young adult novel, Aimee's experience working at the first Newbury Comics and talk about that time she and husband Michael Penn experienced the cultural phenomenon known as Four Loko. Finally, we play a captivating round of CHANGE DOT DORK where we review petitions for bringing back dessert-flavored gums, producing a proper physical release for the DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES soundtrack and Snapple's not-so-memorable line of Elements drinks. Was Aimee a vocal advocate for Motorhead back in the day? You'll have to listen to this episode to find out! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Guest: Dr. Katie Chretien, PCA Plano Lower School Principal PCA has undergone an intensive examination of the books and resources that our students have access to especially in the Lower School library. Resources must be age appropriate in their language, imagery, and ideas communicated to our students. Dr. Chretien shares about the work being done at the Lower School library at the Plano campus, but this audit is ongoing at the Middle School, Upper School, and North Campus libraries as well. PCA Lower School has moved from Scholastic Books to I:55 Book Fairs, Where Faith Matters. From I:55's website: Our vision at I55 Book Fairs is to partner with Christian schools, churches, and organizations in proclaiming the name of Jesus Christ. We are passionate about raising up a generation of inspired readers. Our name comes from Isaiah 55. This chapter encompasses all we strive to do, knowing that nothing is impossible with God. The audit of the books and resources that students have access to in the library should also encourage you as a parent to do a similar audit of what information has access to your children at home through TV, movies, and social media. Parents, help us continue to be vigilant - if you run across something in a book that you think we need to be aware of, please contact either Dr. Chretien at kchretien@prestonwoodchristian.org or Dan Panetti at dpanetti@prestonwoodchristian.org
