Episode 201 is a journey through some of the last 35 years in music through the medium of the sample, from the Amen break to famous sample-heavy albums to our own personal favourite sampled songs. We discuss how an obscure 1960s B-side became the most sampled song in history and helped birth genres like drum and bass and jungle. We explore the sample art of albums like DJ Shadow's Entroducing, Beastie Boys' Paul's Boutique, J Dilla's Donuts, Girl Talk's Night Ripper and The Avalanches' Since I Left You.And then Niall and Andrea share their favourite samples including but not limited to music from Steely Dan, Super Furry Animals, Kendrick Lamar, Kanye, Burial, Kate Bush, ABBA, James Blake, Skepta and a disco Beethoven true original. The track that kicked off the idea was Rory Sweeney and Emby's 'All My Life' which samples Kendrick's 'Backseat Freestyle'.Shout out to Tracklib on Youtube for some of the audio sample beds.Songs referenced on his episode, and their samples are listed here. Bike chases and big slaps galore, it's The Heroin Busters! Sam and Dan discuss Enzo Castellari's bombastic poliziotteschi. Spoiler level: 1/5 For their cinematic pairings, Sam and Dan also recommend films such as The Big Racket and Stunt Squad plus also talk about films they've seen recently including The Naked Truth (not Laughter In Paradise, as Dan initially asserts, although that is also very good) and Night Ripper. Next time Sam and Dan will be discussing Scott Mansfield's '82 obscure slasher Deadly Games. If you've ever wanted your American fashion-giallos with an exclamation mark, check out Night Ripper! Writer-director Jeff Hathcock is better known for "Victims!" - also adorned with an exclamation point - but isn't quite as overtly misogynistic in this one; though, he does channel some eye-rolling prejudice through star Larry Thomas (Seinfeld's the Soup Nazi). Shot-on-video, and apparently without talent, Night Ripper! nevertheless manages to be oddly charming. On this episode: ubiquitous infidelity, questionable photography sessions, short-cut knife murders, repeated reading of newspaper articles, labored mannequin metaphors, some surprisingly creepy literal mannequins, flood-lamp fatigue, and long-groovy driving scenes.
On this installment of SRR we talk about the nostalgic overload, monster mashup, kitchen sink of an album, Girl Talk's 2006 Night Ripper.
Welcome to an extra special BONUS EPISODE of Genre Grinder. What you are about to hear is a digital mixtape compiled and mixed by Tracks of the Damned creator Patrick Ripoll. It includes themes, complete songs, and various clips from the films we’ve been discussing throughout Genre Grinder’s shot-on-video horror series. Be aware that, in most cases, Patrick or myself had to rip the audio from the films themselves, so the sound quality will be uneven to say the least. Then again, that’s kind of the point isn’t. So, sit back, relax, and let the SOV horror vibes take you away. Complete track listing: 1a. WREX Station Identification 1b. 20/20 Report: "VCR Horrors" 1c. Sledgehammer (1983) opening credits 2. ENJOY EVEN MORE TALES OF THE TAPE AS WE DELVE FURTHER INTO THE INSANE DEPTHS OF THE MOST NEOPHYTIC MOVIES EVER TO GRACE A VIDEO RENTAL STORE! Bring on part two of three! Wait, of three? That can’t be right. Oh, yeah, this is a four-part epic now. Gabe and special co-host Patrick Ripoll (who did most of the research) break down 21 more shot-on video horror movies; nine of which one or both of them have been able to actually see, including ‘classics,’ like the Polonia Brothers’ Hallucinations (1986) & Splatter Farm (1987), Jeff Hathcock’s Night Ripper! (1986), Chester Novell Turner’s Tales from the Quadead Zone (1987), and Gary P. Cohen’s genuine cult classic, Video Violence (1987). Some people have asked for a list of the films covered in the description (which I failed to do last time), so here you go. All of the movies we were able to watch are now marked with a †, while the others are discussed, based on available information/reviews: Hallucinations (1986) † Night of Terror (1986) Spine (1986) † Splatter: Architects of Fear (1986) Black River Monster (1986) Night Ripper! This week we talk about Night Ripper by Girl Talk, Mr. Mash-Up, the voice of a generation. Matt argues that mash-ups are a valid form of artistic expression, but the concept isn't well-realized here. Will is disgusted by the entire proposition, no only when it comes to music, but in all art forms including mosaics and super-imposed photos. Don't forget, we're all MASH-UPS of our parents private parts!
Here is my raw audio as shock jock Nathan Talbot for the upcoming video game from Pig Farmer (http://pigfarmergames.com/) Night Ripper. This is meant to be a 1989 late night New York City shock jock who is a provoker and evocateur. The call in show will play as background in the game so in the final game I wager most of this will not be heard. Also I want to note that I, Josh Hadley, do not share these feelings as expressed here... this is a CHARACTER I am playing. Thanks to Sara Hanley as well for being my back up here... although I have no idea WHY she chose a southern accent for her part. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/radiodrome/support

My guest this week is Gregg Gillis, aka Girl Talk. Gregg is an electronic musician from Pittsburgh, PA. We’ve known each other since I played a show in his parent’s backyard in 2000, and I was excited to get a detailed breakdown of his career. We talk about his early Pittsburgh-based noise band, The Joysticks, and his background in the noise world. He tells me about the first two harsher Girl Talk albums, and the new direction he forged on 2006’s Night Ripper. His breaks down his new ventures as a hip-hop producer, including his recent collaboration with Freeway. Mike Riley’s art this week is a mashup of Big Daddy Kane’s Long Live The Kane, Ice Cube’s AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted, 2 Live Crew’s Nasty as They Wanna Be, and Cypress Hill’s self-titled debut. This episode is hosted by splicetoday.com.
