PinkPantheress, James Blake & the "new nostalgic"

Nialler9

This week's Nialler9 podcast with Niall and Andrea, is inspired by the sharp rise of London producer PinkPantheress and her sampling garage, drum & bass and pop music of the 2000s-era, which she has labelled the "new nostalgic". I referenced a book last week, in our conversation with Jenn Gannon, Simon Reynolds' 2011 book  Retromania: Pop Culture's Addiction to Its Own Past. Retromania argues that retro revives a past that is barely over and does so with a prevalent mood of postmodern irony. Interestingly, what has happened in the last ten years is an increase in earnestness and almost wholesale dropping of irony, while new artists have continued to copy, sample and draw influence from existing music, the current generation of Gen Z's shifting priorities and attention to important facts and issues in society, marks a sea change in sensibilities. The ironic detachment of the hipster era has been superseded by a mantra of caring - expressions of truth and desire and meaning over bored detachment or non-commitment. PinkPantheress' music brings up ideas about how older generations gatekeep music, and how women and men sampling classic music is viewed differently, how Tik Tok and a lifetime of internet culture has freed younger artists to express themselves cross-genre and how being a bedroom pop artist is now a phenomenon of relatability rather than a trend of style. We also talk about the parallels between PinkPantheress and James Blake who first arrived sampling the likes of Kelis and Aaliyah, and whose electronic music went on to influence the mainstream, as Blake's own music, as heard on the just released Friends That Break Your Heart, has moved increasingly earnest itself. For a decade James Blake has crafted an idiosyncratic sound. His early work as a minimalist electronic producer fused lush R&B chords with lyrical collage and unfiltered synthesizers. He describes his hit 2013 song “Retrograde” as apocalyptic yet also romantic. This single was in stark contrast to the bubblegum pop of the early 2010s. But other artists recruited him to spread his subversive sonics. He produced on three of the most seminal albums in recent history: Beyoncé's Lemonade, Kendrick Lamar's DAMN and Frank Ocean's Blonde. Before Blake, it sounded like pop was caught in the same four chord loop. But gradually Blake's vision of harmonic melancholy has infused popular music. On his new album “Friends That Break Your Heart,” Blake has written his most compelling songs yet, but underneath are those his familiar wandering chords and emotional suspense. Escuchar audio

The Third Story Podcast with Leo Sidran

Monica Martin was 18 years old, driving in the car with her friend Matt and singing along with the radio. She had always enjoyed “hamming it up” and singing along to music, but she had no intention of taking it seriously. But the universe had other plans for her. Her friend, who  Matt, who was a musician, coaxed her into performing; she started to sing in public and on friends' records, which all led to her writing her own songs. She fronted experimental-folk-pop sextet, PHOX, formed in Madison, Wisconsin in 2012. PHOX released an eponymous album, played big festivals, national TV shows, and flew overseas to play shows far away from home. PHOX went on indefinite hiatus in 2017, and Monica moved to LA because “Wisconsin is cold as f*ck”.  She found herself a periwinkle casita and is feeling freer than ever in the city of misfits. She's presently at work unpacking her mental confusions by cataloging/celebrating the “fuckery” of her ex-es (and herself) in lowkey pop songs with soul whispers, some golden-era hollywood dramatics, and psychedelic flickers courtesy of a theremin. Monica is still figuring out who she is, but quite happy to share her cautionary tales: “I made hundreds of mistakes so you don't have to.” She recently released her new single “Go Easy, Kid” and is featured on the James Blake song “Show Me” from Blake's latest release. Monica and I did an ill fated interview in 2015 which was never released. We were both back in Wisconsin over the summer and decided the time was right to get together for an interview redo. Here she talks about discovering her musical talent in her late teens, what it means to be “Wisconsin sober”, the complex and delicate dynamics of her first band Phox, her mental health struggles, why it's so expensive to be poor, the many ways that she has had to integrate in her life, staying in bed all day, the influence of Fiona Apple and Billie Holiday on her music, working with James Blake, Vulfpeck, Scary Pockets and how being a hairdresser is similar to being a therapist (but much less well paid).

Don't hate, appreciate. Unless we're talking about this week's Top 5 – though hopefully you'll appreciate that, too. A new album from James Blake prompts Dave Hanratty and Craig Fitzpatrick to bash their heads together and consider some of the more spiky songs out there. Over the past decade, James Blake has gone from grabbing our hearts with the Wilhelm Scream, to collaborating with some of the biggest names on the planet. The London born producer, singer, and multi-instrumentalist has always kept it moving; expanding his sound, testing new waters, and through it all remaining grounded in what matters. I first met James back in 2011, just as the hype around him was beginning to grow. And I've been lucky to catch up with him over the years at various points. But he's never done a Take 5, until now. On the day he released his fifth album, he joined me to play over people's tunes. Specifically, his favourite heartbreak anthems. From Stevie Wonder to Pink Pantheress to Al Green, this is a capture of an incredible music mind and heart. Stevie Wonder - Never Dreamed You'd Leave In Summer Jeff Buckley - I Know It's Over Dijon - Many Times Pink Pantheress - Break It Off Al Green - How Can You Mend A Broken Heart

On the day of the US Open Finals let's throwback to my 2018 convo with James Blake the tennis star who was once #4 in the world and #1 in America with wins over Federer and Nadal. But what's most amazing is that he played his best tennis after breaking his neck in a freak injury and contracting shingles and losing his dad—all in one year. He's tough, smart (Harvard), humble, and cool. And the best Black male player since Arthur Ashe. I interviewed him at the tennis club where I grew up, Sportsmen's Tennis Club in Dorchester, Massachusetts, in front of a few hundred people. James is an amazing person. It's really interesting to see how he thinks. Patreon.com/toureshow Instagram: @toureshow Twitter: @toure Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Every month, we ask the NPR Music staff: What's the one song you couldn't escape? What's the one album to which you'll return all year? In August, we got vulnerable with James Blake, leveled up with Foxing, cooed with PinkPantheress, discovered an obscure Polish composer via pianist Lucas Debargue, memorialized a member of Injury Reserve and went back in time to Lee Morgan's weekend residency at the Lighthouse. Songs heard on this episode: • James Blake: "Life is Not the Same" from Friends That Break Your Heart • Foxing: "Beacons" from Draw Down the Moon• PinkPantheress, "Just for me"• Lucas Debargue: "Nostalgie du pays" from Zal — The Music of Miłosz Magin • Injury Reserve: "Knees" from By the Time I Get to Phoenix • Lee Morgan: "Absolutions (Friday, Set 2)" from The Complete Live at the Lighthouse Follow the #NowPlaying blog for the NPR Music staff's favorite new songs.
