emocleW, emocleW, emocleW to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This is your bonus FRIDAY REWIND episode! Today, we catch up with DJ Shadow, originally episode 298 from 2019-11-13.Original episode intro:"Guess who's coming… IT'S… Guess who's coming… IT'S j-j-j-just your favourite DJ saviour / using and confusing beats that you never heard / since / 1990… Ladies and gentlemen, he'll put a smile on your face like Ultra Brite - it's DJ SHADOW!"(* now that is a solid intro).Original writeup below:“…Not every musical moment affects people the same way…”A great rare treat for Shadow heads and crate digging nerds, and those who appreciate a good old fashioned music chat right here, but not only that - of course Pip and Shadow get to some really interesting ground when not dealing with the musical matters at hand, including his growing up in a remote town with limited access to hip hop which leads nicely onto how he eventually did find his way in, which then leads us into the whole Mo Wax side of things where he met and worked with James Lavelle extensively for a contained period (the foundation for which being laid by discovering NME, Melody Maker and also by the very intro of Nation Of Millions by Public Enemy - “LONDON, ENGLAND…!!!”), the Entroducing / Soldesides / Unkle / Brainfreeze eras, dealing with fan expectations and of course being taken out of context in hilarious style, nutritional value of rap from then and now, the current album ‘Our Pathetic Age' and a breakdown of lead track ‘Rosie', conjuring live sets and so much more which is all there for you to discover! Such a good one. Why DJ Shadow's Endtroducing is a crate-digging cinematic masterpiece

We gathered to listen through one of the most singular debut albums ever made. Here's the recording of the chat. Niall is joined at our live listening event Listen Closely in the Big Romance by Cian Galvin aka Irish hip-hop producer and crate digger The Expert to discuss... DJ Shadow - Endtroducing (1996) A towering achievement in sample-based plunderphonics, music arrangements and turntablist-lead production techniques, DJ Shadow's 1996's debut album Endtroducing remains one of the most evocative and singular classic albums of recent times. Entirely built of obscure crate-dug samples using an Akai MPC60 sampler, Endtroducing's cinematic soundscapes finds a transportive space where emotionally resonant electronica and hip-hop meet - the middle ground between light and shadow. It is considered one of the best albums of all-time, and is certainly one of mine. * Support Nialler9 on Patreon, get event discounts, playlists, ad-free episodes and join our Discord community Listen on Apple | Android  | Patreon | Pocketcasts | CastBox | Stitcher | Spotify | RSS Feed | Pod.Link The third instalment of our loosely titled Plunderphonics series for the Nialler9 Listening Party brought us to a record that, thirty years on, still doesn't quite sound like anything else. DJ Shadow's Endtroducing, released September 16th 1996 on Mo' Wax, is a record built entirely from other records - and yet it sounds like nothing any of those records ever sounded like. If you missed the night, the podcast recording is above. What follows is a bit of context and some of what we got into. The trilogy so far We've now done The Avalanches' Since I Left You and J Dilla's Donuts as part of this loose series. All three are sample-based records. All three feel like complete worlds unto themselves. There's something about the constraint of working entirely within found sound that produces a particular kind of magic - you're hearing music that was already forgotten being given an entirely new life, filtered through the taste and instincts of one person with a singular obsession. Endtroducing is the most melancholic of the three. It's not a party record or a rap record in any conventional sense. It's a cinematic, introspective piece of work - breakbeats, jazz, psychedelia, hip-hop, all of it dissolved into something that feels like its own atmosphere. The kid from Davis, California Josh Davis grew up in Davis, California, then San Jose - both outside the main cultural centres, which is something he and Mo' Wax founder James Lavelle bonded over immediately when they first spoke by phone. Lavelle had grown up in Oxford. Both felt like outsiders to the scenes they were drawn to. Shadow was experimenting with a four-track recorder in high school and DJing on the campus radio station KDVS at UC Davis before he'd made a single release. By 1993 he was part of the Solesides underground hip-hop collective alongside Blackalicious, Lateef, and Lyrics Born. Lavelle found him through a B-side remix on a forgotten hip-hop promo, tracked him down through a friend at Tommy Boy Records, and told him: "Don't worry about choruses and verses, just push your sound further." That's more or less what he did. The equipment The entire album was made on an Akai MPC60 II, a pair of turntables, and an Alesis ADAT tape recorder that belonged to Dan the Automator. Shadow was 23 years old. The MPC could sample 2.5 seconds of stereo and store 13 seconds total. Everything on the record - the beats, the melodies, the percussion - had to be constructed within those limits. Self-imposed limitation producing something that infinite digital possibilities probably couldn't. There's a reason we don't really get records like this anymore, and it's partly because the tools have become too open-ended. The seams and the constraints are part of what gives Endtroducing its particular texture. The crates Shadow spent his days in the basement of Rare Records in Sacramento, a shop with records piled to the ceiling. He found a mummified bat down there once. The cover photograph, taken by B+, shows producer Chief Xcel and Lyrics Born (in a wig) in that same basement. It's as good a visual summary of the album's ethos as you'll find anywhere. He made it a rule to avoid sampling obvious or well-known material. The samples he pulled were largely from forgotten funk, soul, jazz, experimental, and sound library records - music that had no audience left and no commercial future. He rescued them. The liner notes credit everything, including the big clearance cases: Metallica, Björk, and the David Axelrod piano loop that anchors 'Midnight in a Perfect World'. Lavelle handled the clearances. "The samples were pretty easy to clear," he said. "It's different when you're sampling some Swedish drum break from 1970 than sampling James Brown." The album itself Endtroducing feels like a place. Not a collection of tracks but a world you enter at the start and leave at the end, slightly altered. The drums on 'Building Steam with a Grain of Salt', the disorienting loop of 'Changeling', the controlled chaos of the second half of 'Scatter Brain', the three-part sweep of 'Stem/Long Stem', the ache of 'Midnight in a Perfect World'. It's not a happy record. Shadow said himself that feelings of self-doubt and depression came through in the music during production. You can hear it. The Wire's first ever review called it "a debut of melancholic mediocrity." Melody Maker said "you need this record. You are incomplete without it." The bigger question There's a clip of Shadow in the Rare Records basement that gets used a lot in discussions about Endtroducing. He gestures around at the records and says: "Almost none of these artists still have a career. Ten years down the line, you'll be in here." It's a bleak thought, but also the central one. Sampling asks us to reckon with music's ephemerality - but it also offers a counter-argument. These records survived because Shadow found them. Their sounds are in the album. They're still being heard.

Our guest today is George Evelyn aka DJ EASE, he is the songwriter and producer behind the iconic band Nightmares on wax. If like me you came up through the 90s then Nightmares on wax were an inescapable joy that sat alongside Massive Attack, Portishead, DJ Shadow and other legends of the down beat music scene that provided many a soft landing for every raver. Since 1989 George has been creating Jazz inflected, dub tinged, Hip-Hop influenced mood music with a timeless feeling of craft and soul. This 13 album journey has taken him from humble beginnings to sell out shows at Royal The Albert Hall. Nightmares on wax are celebrating the classic albums 'Inna Space - Outta Sound' & 'Smokers Delight' which have matured to an amazing 20 and 30 years respectively. To mark the anniversary of 'Inna Space - Outta Sound' George has commissioned (friend of the pod) and reggae legend Adrian Sherwood to reconstruct the record in his own inimitable style. It is, of course, yet another triumph and a fitting tribute to the legacy of Nightmares on wax. Still moving forward and seemingly still in love with music - we are delighted to welcome George Evelyn to the podcast. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

It's in the Guinness Book of World Records as the first album to be composed entirely out of sampled sounds, but focusing on the technical achievement seriously undersells the depths of Shadow's artistry. This is lively, organic music, with compositions that feel like sculptures crafted from the clay of music history, and the entire 21st-century DJing movement stands on the foundation of what Shadow accomplished here. Mike himself is a composer of sample-based music (including our awesome theme song) and a long-time admirer of Shadow's work, and he's invited Rich and returning special guest Shivam Bhatt to deconstruct an album that builds a mighty head of steam out of a grain of salt.Cohosts: Mike DeFabio, Rich Bunnell, Shivam BhattComplete show notes: https://discordpod.com/listen/170-dj-shadow-endtroducing-1996Discord & Rhyme's merch store: http://tee.pub/lic/discordpodSupport the podcast! https://www.patreon.com/discordpod

Mats Nileskär intervjuar även Peanut Butter Wolf, MF Doom, Freddie Gibbs, Cut Chemist, DJ Shadow, Oh No, Dudley Perkins, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Dur-Dur Band, Ata Kak och Large Professor.

I'm feeling a tiny bit too gassed to look it up, but I think this is maybe the fourth-consecutive episode of the podcast to drop on Thanksgiving.Thursdays aren't fantastic for metrics it seems, but what's more likely is that this thing just isn't really marketable in terms of audience growth. And that's okay. There was never a pipe dream to have it all blow up. It's always been about connecting with people and sharing stories. And I'm pretty proud to be closing in on 200 episodes/four years of sittin' down with folks to talk about life and music.Point being, nobody's really paying attention to anything on Thanksgiving; they're all movin' around and preparing and whatnot. Most folks, anyway. And I want to give a special shoutout to those that aren't: To those that have spent or do spend this particular holiday without friends or without loved ones -- shouts out to you. You are loved, even if sediments of solitude occupy a portion of your day. Or your life.I don't know how the way current times feel compares to The Depression or Civil Rights or the late '70s when there were gas lines or any of the rest of it. I just know that it makes me a little sad everyday that people are being ugly to each other. It almost feels criminal to discover yourself enjoying something like a little time away from the grind when there are people out there that would give anything to have the grind be a part of their lives. So, I'd like to just...share a human moment, and say that I appreciate all of you that are currently inhabiting the planet. I mean, if you're fuckin' with other people and doin' creepy shit that ain't kosher -- well -- knock that off.People in traffic annoy me often. Same with comments-section campers. And don't get me started on the homeslices and the girlfriends that think that what's happening in the United States right now is fine. Lemme tell ya': Fine would be fantastic. Shit's "pretty fuckin' far from okay."So hopefully today some of you can wiggle yourself into that once-familiar feeling of things being okay, and you can enjoy your sweet potatoes, and compliment the pie crust, and -- of course -- offer to do the dishes.Anyway...Matthew Naquin is this week's guest. He was kind enough to share some of a Tuesday evening with me a couple of weeks ago, and together we hammered out Episode No. 192.We talked about his illustrations (Check him out on Instagram at @thesanmateo.), his music (thesanmateo.com plus Bandcamp, Spotify, and Apple Music), life, family, comedy, and a bunch more, including a few of his favorite records, which were these:U2's The Joshua Tree (1987)Gentlemen (1993), The Afghan WigsPortishead's Dummy (1994)F# A# Infinity (1997), Godspeed You! In this introspective but delightfully nerdy episode, Professor Aubrey and Tim the Nerd dive deep into the world of attachment styles—how they form, how they play out in relationships, and how they show up in the stories we love. They kick things off by examining their own tendencies, exploring how their personal attachment patterns shape the way they connect with others. From there, the conversation launches into a character-driven breakdown of famous fictional relationships. They analyze the anxious-avoidant chaos swirling around Anakin and Padmé in Star Wars, the stop-and-start emotional boomerang that defines Ross and Rachel on Friends, and the surprisingly secure, gloriously spooky devotion between Gomez and Morticia Addams. Along the way, they highlight how attachment theory helps make sense of why these couples resonate—or unravel. The duo then shifts gears into their Songs of the Week and introduces a brand-new YouTube Music playlist they've curated for listeners. Professor Aubrey discusses New York Groove from KISS/Ace Frehley, while Tim brings the heat with Nobody Speak by DJ Shadow. Tim also shares a link to an Ace Frehley Tribute Playlist he's crafted on YouTube for anyone wanting to dive deeper into Frehley's work. It's an episode filled with emotional insight, pop-culture fun, music recommendations, and the trademark warmth and wit that define Friends Talking Nerdy. Mats Nileskär intervjuar även Peanut Butter Wolf, MF Doom, Freddie Gibbs, Cut Chemist, DJ Shadow, Oh No, Dudley Perkins, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Dur-Dur Band, Ata Kak och Large Professor.

By his 20s, he was working as a sound designer for Akai, Roland, Emu/Ensoniq, eventually signing on exclusively with the latter. He soon gained several prominent contracts working with some notable artistes such as Busta Rhymes, Greensleeves, 9 Bar, SFP, Sleeveless, Chris Campbell and Gam Productions. He contracted to Island Records and Chrysalis as a producer and remixer, and was commissioned to write the score for Macbeth that ran at 2 Way Mirror at Alexander Palace for the Cambridge Shakespeare Company. This led to him offering educational workshops and classes, and becoming a contributing creator and Forum moderator for Sound On Sound.Recently, he was invited by the Recording Academy to become a professional member, approved educator, and mentor for their member base. #mailpoet_form_3 .mailpoet_form { } #mailpoet_form_3 .mailpoet_column_with_background { padding: 10px; } #mailpoet_form_3 .mailpoet_form_column:not(:first-child) { margin-left: 20px; } #mailpoet_form_3 .mailpoet_paragraph { line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 20px; } #mailpoet_form_3 .mailpoet_segment_label, #mailpoet_form_3 .mailpoet_text_label, #mailpoet_form_3 .mailpoet_textarea_label, #mailpoet_form_3 .mailpoet_select_label, #mailpoet_form_3 .mailpoet_radio_label, #mailpoet_form_3 .mailpoet_checkbox_label, #mailpoet_form_3 .mailpoet_list_label, #mailpoet_form_3 .mailpoet_date_label { display: block; font-weight: normal; } #mailpoet_form_3 .mailpoet_text, #mailpoet_form_3 .mailpoet_textarea, #mailpoet_form_3 .mailpoet_select, #mailpoet_form_3 .mailpoet_date_month, #mailpoet_form_3 .mailpoet_date_day, #mailpoet_form_3 .mailpoet_date_year, #mailpoet_form_3 .mailpoet_date { display: block; } #mailpoet_form_3 .mailpoet_text, #mailpoet_form_3 .mailpoet_textarea { width: 200px; } #mailpoet_form_3 .mailpoet_checkbox { } #mailpoet_form_3 .mailpoet_submit { } #mailpoet_form_3 .mailpoet_divider { } #mailpoet_form_3 .mailpoet_message { } #mailpoet_form_3 .mailpoet_form_loading { width: 30px; text-align: center; line-height: normal; } #mailpoet_form_3 .mailpoet_form_loading > span { width: 5px; height: 5px; background-color: #5b5b5b; }#mailpoet_form_3{border: 1px solid #fcb900;border-radius: 40px;text-align: center;}#mailpoet_form_3 form.mailpoet_form {padding: 20px;}#mailpoet_form_3{width: 70%;}#mailpoet_form_3 .mailpoet_message {margin: 0; padding: 0 20px;}#mailpoet_form_3 .mailpoet_paragraph.last {margin-bottom: 0} @media (max-width: 500px) {#mailpoet_form_3 {background-image: none;}} @media (min-width: 500px) {#mailpoet_form_3 .last .mailpoet_paragraph:last-child {margin-bottom: 0}} @media (max-width: 500px) {#mailpoet_form_3 .mailpoet_form_column:last-child .mailpoet_paragraph:last-child {margin-bottom: 0}} Por favor, deja este campo vacío ¿Escribes canciones o te gustaría hacerlo? Episode 177 Chapter 36, Modern Turntablism. Works Recommended from my book, Electronic and Experimental Music  Welcome to the Archive of Electronic Music. This is Thom Holmes. This podcast is produced as a companion to my book, Electronic and Experimental Music, published by Routledge. Each of these episodes corresponds to a chapter in the text and an associated list of recommended works, also called Listen in the text. They provide listening examples of vintage electronic works featured in the text. The works themselves can be enjoyed without the book and I hope that they stand as a chronological survey of important works in the history of electronic music. Be sure to tune-in to other episodes of the podcast where we explore a wide range of electronic music in many styles and genres, all drawn from my archive of vintage recordings. There is a complete playlist for this episode on the website for the podcast. Marked with instructions, "Do not store in a protective package," my copy is a reissue of the disc first released in 1985, done by Japanese label Locus Solus. The naked record will naturally become increasingly damaged from shipping, storing, and playing the record, all becoming part of the work. In essence, the owner is implored to progressively destroy the release, allowing it to become scratched and bruised from accumulating damage that make each copy unique. My copy actually skips a lot. In the passage I am playing I often had to press the needle down a little bit to get through a skip. There is faintly recorded jazz music found on some of the disc, while other parts are pretty much composed only of surface noise. 04:31 49:18 12.   Yasunao Tone, “Part 1” (excerpt 1999) from Solo for Wounded CD. Marking two decades since the release of their second album, Menos El Oso -- heralded by both critics and fans alike -- the five-piece are back this year to play the album in full across the country. A sprawling, math-rock masterclass, Menos takes listeners on a globetrotting trail through Spain, Ireland, Los Angeles and more, while vocalist/guitarist Jake Snider inhabits characters seeking escape, be it from fever dreams, crime scenes or soul-crushing day jobs. Today, Jake is joined by guitarist David Knudson, as the pair breakdown Menos track-by-track. Along with host Jim Hanke, they dive into the meanings behind some of the band's most impactful songs twenty years later, and how the genre-bending experimentation of Danger Mouse and DJ Shadow influenced the LP. Catch Minus the Bear at this year's Best Friends Forever Fest in Las Vegas, or on tour cost-to-coast, this fall. Visit minusthebear.com for tickets, social media and more.

By his 20s he was working as a sound designer for Akai, Roland Emu/Ensoniq, eventually signing on exclusively with the latter. Later, due to a growing demand for software instruments and libraries, Eddie started to develop libraries for various software manufacturers, including Native Instruments, Kiesel, Sound Effects Library, Arturia and Propellerheads. A meeting with Phil Allen, a Capital Radio DJ, resulted in the company Samplecraze, which Eddie has spent 20 years developing as an educational resource. At this time he trained in music production and soon gained a number of prominent contracts working with some notable artistes such as Busta Rhymes, Greensleeves, 9 Bar, SFP, Sleeveless, Chris Campbell and Gam Productions. He contracted to Island Records and Chrysalis as a producer and remixer,  plus was commissioned to write the score for Macbeth that ran at 2 Way Mirror at Alexander Palace for the Cambridge Shakespeare Company. His ongoing development of Samplecraze has led to him offering educational workshops and classes, releasing four books via PC Publishing and becoming a contributor and forum moderator for Sound On Sound. We've been having a look back through the Tape Notes archive to bring back some of our favourite early episodes that you may have missed. This selection is our conversation from Summer 2020, with Josh Davis, better know as DJ Shadow. EPISODE NOTES In this episode, John ventures over to Wendy House Studios to catch up with hip-hip royalty Josh Davis AKA DJ Shadow, to talk through how he recorded and produced his latest album ‘Our Pathetic Age' and his chart-topping album ‘The Mountain Will Fall'.   Josh gives us a full insight in to his largest most diverse project yet, breaking down his writing process from the moment he randomly dips in to his vast record collection for inspiration, to discovering unlikely source material such as an abandoned record collection rescued from a friend of his father's. We get to hear the original samples that form the basis of some of his biggest hits as well as the raw vocal stems of Nas and Pharoahe Monch rapping at each other from different studios.   Listen to find out about Josh's meticulous sample editing process, what mixing mistake meant he had to sneakily rerelease a track, and why he had to gate-crash a Run the Jewels gig.  Tracks discussed: Nobody Speak, Rocket Fuel, Drone Warfare   LINKS TO EVERYTHING TAPE NOTES  https://linktr.ee/tapenotes    Listen to 'Our Pathetic Age' here. Kindred know-it-alls Deon and Jay kick knowledge…f#@% it, you know where this is going. In the early 1970s, legendary collaborator and self-proclaimed non-musician Brian Eno famously designed a deck of 115 cards containing elliptical imperatives to spark in the user creative connections unobtainable through regular modes of work. He called his creation "Oblique Strategies." For the past half century, countless artists and professionals across the globe have benefited from utilizing the oblique strategies technique when attempting to overcome a lull in creative output. In 2024, kooky, knuckleheaded yet somehow still award-winning* hobby podcasters and self-proclaimed Lightnin' Lickers Jay and Deon found themselves uninspired when contemplating the potential theme of their upcoming thirty-ninth episode.   This was a tough list to compile. What criteria do I use? Influential albums? Ones I play the most? Critics favorites? Do I include ambient albums? Vocal albums? Oof, this was hard.   The list I came up with was sort of a bit of everything. All these albums are personal faves but I also couldn't help thinking about things from a historical standpoint. Also, I couldn't help but view them from a personal historical standpoint - such as albums that turned me on to a different style or sound(DJ Shadow, Underworld). Including a few vocal albums might be a bit controversial, I flip flopped on that several times but finally said screw it, it's my list and I can do whatever I want.  Of course there is also the question of what constitutes an "electronic" album? Some on this list are obviously electronic(Tangerine Dream, Kraftwerk) while others are not quite as clear(Air, Postal Service). It would be easy to get pulled into that debate and end up like the "what is ambient music" debate. I decided that I would approach it the way Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart described his test for obscenity - "I know it when I see it." So I just went with whatever I felt worked. A few other notes on this list - I like how the list spans five decades. I ended up with albums from every decade other than the 2020s. That just feels right. It also felt right to leave off strictly ambient albums. That genre can have it's own list. I constructed the mix chronologically because it was easier that way and it's cool to listen to the tracks evolve over time.
