“I Am Music,” the third studio album by American rapper Playboi Carti, dropped on March 14, 2025, through AWGE and Interscope Records, marking his first full-length release in over four years since the groundbreaking “Whole Lotta Red” in 2020. This 30-track opus, originally teased under the title “Narcissist” before evolving into “Music” and finally “I Am Music,” arrives after a torturous gestation period that tested the patience of Carti's fervent fanbase. Spanning 77 minutes, the album is a sprawling testament to his enigmatic persona, blending trap, punk, and experimental rap into a chaotic yet captivating sonic tapestry. Featuring an all-star lineup of collaborators—Travis Scott, Kendrick Lamar, The Weeknd, Future, Lil Uzi Vert, Skepta, Jhené Aiko, Ty Dolla Sign, and Young Thug—“I Am Music” showcases Carti's ability to command a cultural moment, even amidst a rollout plagued by delays, leaks, and unfulfilled promises. The album's production, helmed primarily by Ojivolta, Cardo, and F1lthy, with contributions from heavyweights like Kanye West, Metro Boomin, and Mike Dean, oscillates between glitchy synths, booming trap drums, and atmospheric flourishes. Tracks like “Evil J0rdan” and “HBA” (formerly “H00dByAir”), released as standalone singles in 2024, anchor the project with their hypnotic beats and Carti's signature vocal contortions—ranging from guttural growls to high-pitched shrieks. The inclusion of DJ Swamp Izzo's bombastic interludes ties the album to Atlanta's mixtape heritage, lending a gritty, street-level authenticity to its futuristic sound. Standouts like “Mojo Jojo,” with Kendrick Lamar's playful ad-libs, and “Rather Lie,” elevated by The Weeknd's silky croon, highlight the album's versatility, while “Like Weezy” nods to Lil Wayne—whose phrase “I Am Music” Carti borrows—with a Rich Kidz sample that bridges past and present.“I Am Music” is as much a vibe as it is a statement, reflecting Carti's evolution from SoundCloud darling to a generational pacesetter. Its rollout began in earnest with cryptic Instagram posts in December 2023, including the tagline “I am music” and Pharrell's co-sign, “Prepare.” What followed was a barrage of YouTube and Instagram exclusives—“2024,” “Backr00ms,” “All Red”—that fueled anticipation while frustrating fans with their streaming absence. Recorded in eclectic locales, including a Paris cave studio for three months, as Carti revealed in a 2023 Numéro Berlin interview, the album channels themes of love, sex, drugs, and personal turmoil, with hints of bipolar struggles and rehab musings teased in his 2022 XXL interview. Yet, lyrically, it leans more into braggadocio and hedonism than introspection, a choice that critics argue limits its depth.Reception has been polarized but largely positive, with Pitchfork calling it a “dizzying, vibes-driven flood,” and The Guardian praising Carti's “mystical vocal range.” Its 30-track length—bloated to some, a feast to others—mirrors the excess of his persona, though tracks like “OPM Babi” and “Twin Trim” (a Uzi solo cut) feel like filler. The album debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200, moving 298,000 units, cementing Carti's commercial clout. Still, its messy release—delayed from midnight to dawn on March 14 amid sample clearance woes—mirrors its unpolished edges, with some accusing Carti of coasting on aura over substance. Regardless, “I Am Music” reaffirms his dominance in the rage-rap lineage he pioneered, a chaotic masterpiece that thrives on its contradictions.

Episode Summary: Menina interviews Swoosh, who began dancing at age four, inspired by Michael Jackson. He recalls teaching himself dance through TV, as dance wasn't as accessible in the UK during the 80s. His passion grew through family performances and school talent shows. Encouraged by a school teacher, Swoosh started taking dance seriously after a successful school talent show performance. He pursued formal training in ballet, contemporary, and jazz, expanding his skills and understanding of dance technique, which shaped his professional journey. Swoosh formed Flawless, a now-famous dance group, starting as a boys-only club at his school. He valued mentality over ability in selecting members. Flawless trained hard, won their first UK championship, and continued to excel in international competitions, including the USA vs. UK championship. Swoosh reflects on Flawless' rise to global fame after their appearance on Britain's Got Talent, which led to sold-out tours and a larger fanbase. Flawless has since expanded from a core group to an academy, training the next generation of dancers. Swoosh embraced TikTok during the pandemic, growing his following by bulk-creating content and collaborating with celebrities. He highlights the importance of using social media strategically to build a personal brand and advises dancers to focus on their unique qualities. Swoosh encourages dancers to embrace their individuality and purpose. He emphasizes building consistent content for social media, using personality to stand out, and staying true to oneself in auditions. Swoosh closes with words of encouragement, urging dancers to stay authentic and focused on their purpose. Menina thanks him for his insights, concluding the episode on a hopeful note for future collaborations. On No Tags 25, we meet Jonny Banger: T-shirt hustler, avant-bootlegger, visionary rabble-rouser, DJ battle champ and bossman of the anarchic anti-fashion brand Sports Banger. From a certain angle, it can seem like the clothes are the main event at Sports Banger, from the original Free Tulisa tee and bootlegged NHS logos to wearable inflatables and a Chanel toilet seat headpiece. Naturally, Jonny has been asked a lot of questions in previous interviews about his designs and his philosophical take on bootlegs and infringement. But there's another side to the Banger story that hasn't been excavated: obviously, the music.Flipping through Sports Banger: Lifestyles of the Poor, Rich and Famous, the book that charts the first decade of the project, you can find musical references on almost every page: pilfered record label logos, Skepta in a postie's hi-viz jacket, descriptions of his studio's fine-tuned sound systems, playlists of tunes that inspired the Sports Banger runway shows, and even allusions to Jonny's previous life in the UK rap scene. We invited Jonny to go deep into the musical side of his story, from tape packs to free parties to the “shit mix jar” that collected fines in the first Sports Banger studio. He told us about his teenage years as a scratch DJ, his previous life as a club booker on Brick Lane, his ravey links with Swamp 81, School Records, Shangri-La and his own Heras label, and how he finally fell in love with free parties. And, most exciting for our resident KLF dweeb, he gave us a hint of what to expect from Sports Banger's forthcoming collaboration with K2 on the People's Pyramid. It's been a wild ride, and he's got the stories to prove it.If you enjoyed this big fat interview episode of No Tags then we implore you to press all the buttons and like, rate, review or subscribe on your podcast app of choice.
This episode is about how to release a sneaker from a collaborator's point of view. I'll take a look at how they can create a release strategy that suits their needs. But first they need to know what are they trying to get out of a sneaker release and what are their core values. I also evaluate why sneaker releases are the way they are, taking a look at recent releases of Action Bronson, Nina Chanel Abney, and others. I'll answer why some choose raffle, or loyalty access or first-come first-served approach. Plus a lot more! Links New Socks Available Now! shop.sockjig.com MLB Article I'm quoted in: Instant classic? In conjunction with "What's Good?", this is a special DITD episode where Charlie heads to West London to talk with Garage pioneer and co-founder of Heartless Crew: MC Bushkin. In anticipation of his film "The Story So Far" premiering @ Genesis Cinema the same day this episode drops, Bushkin talks his beginnings, notable moments in his Heartless Crew years but more broadly, get into the connections between Garage, Grime and beyond; also tracing the absurd rate of evolution Black British Music had in the 90s/00s, with Bushkin right there through all of it. if you recently spun Narduwar's interview with Skepta, this'll be a great opportunity for you to go deeper into the history that made the likes of Skepta and his contemporaries. Thanks for listening.
