“Sin, Glitter, and Lattes.”That's what Ghiovanna, owner of Coterie Lounge & Cafe, recently started printing on t-shirts. Her friends and customers love it — not just because it's a catchy phrase, but because it's a reminder that community love can defeat extremist hate.Ghiovanna and her friend Roxie D. Mocracy had already worked together to put on drag shows at her cafe. The community loved the shows, despite being a fairly conservative suburban area, so Roxie and Ghiovanna thought a Drag Story Hour could be a fun new addition. Unfortunately, a right-wing extremist saw a post advertising the event and began coordinating an attack against Ghiovanna and her business. But Ghiovanna's community rallied around her. They defended her and Coterie on social media, sold out the Drag Story Hour event (along with the t-shirts), and business has been better than ever. More tourists have started stopping by to buy coffee from her as they drive through the area, and she's even received messages of support from as far as Denmark and Australia. Most importantly, she's heard from parents in her own community that they appreciate having a safe space for their kids. The Drag Story Hour was such a success, Ghiovanna and Roxie have already planned more drag and other LGBTQ-friendly events throughout June — and all year long! Because supporting the queer community isn't just for Pride Month. It's for every month. For a transcript of this episode, please email comms@redwine.blue. BONUS S6E7 8 retail trends for 2026 including AI-assisted shoppers, why people are the new luxury, and the grey swans most retailers are ignoringCasey Golden and Ricardo Belmar spent two days at The Lead Summit in New York City with the operators, founders, and analysts actually running retail right now, and they walked out with a clear read on the retail trends 2026 will be built on. Instead of a session-by-session recap, this bonus episode pulls out the eight cross-cutting themes that showed up no matter whose stage they were on, from Anthropologie and Talbots to Hey Dude, Olaplex, Loop, and Coterie. The headline: every AI experiment built to replace people was a failure story, and every one built to extend people was a winner. From there the conversation runs through the rewired store, the rise of the AI-assisted shopper, why human connection is becoming the new luxury, and the grey swan events most retailers can see coming but refuse to plan for. If you want the retail trends 2026 leaders are quietly betting on, plus what to do about it Monday morning, this is the episode. In This Episode, You'll Learn• Why AI augmentation beats AI replacement, and the customer service "40% ticket deflection" stat that fell apart under real measurement• How the AI-assisted shopper is already changing product discovery, and why generative engine optimization (GEO) is getting 80% of the attention on 5% of the traffic• Why "people are the new luxury" may be the one theme still defining retail trends 2026 a year from now• What Talbots' 35-of-100 transactions stat says about store KPIs beyond sales per square foot• How community beat audience for breakout brands, and why your brand story now has to teach the LLMs who you are• The grey swans hiding in plain sight: GLP-1, the aging of America, and single-geography supply chain risk• The Monday-morning move to make before the AI-assisted shopper takes a bigger bite of your holiday trafficNotable Moments & Quotes• "AI won't sit down and have a cigarette with me." The line that summed up why people still matter.• "Listening is a capability, but hearing is a skill."• Rainbow Shops: a vendor's 40% ticket deflection collapsed because customers just hung up and called back for a human.• Talbots' Concierge clienteling went from reaching 300,000 of 750,000 eligible customers to all of them, while keeping the calls human. AI does the volume, people do the moments.• Loop Earplugs grew from $1M to $250M in five years, obsessing over one question: where did you first hear about us?• MoMA Design Store: "We're not Amazon, and we don't want to be."• Randa Apparel's grey swans: GLP-1 (roughly 8M users today, potentially 100M by 2030), more Americans over 65 than under 18 by 2028, and the warning that "a business built around a single geography isn't lean, it's exposed."Subscribe & FollowIf you enjoyed this episode, please leave us a 5‑star rating and review on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or Goodpods. Tara, Caroline and Allison welcome longtime friend and boutique owner Remy Stressenger. Remy shares how she opened her Nantucket store 11 years ago without a lifelong dream or business plan, driven by a desire for independence during her divorce and after starting a creative concierge business. She explains learning retail by jumping in, attending the Coterie trade show, and refining her buying eye over time, focusing on small international brands and dropping them once they become widely carried. The group discusses differences between Nantucket and Boston retail, seasonal challenges, and Remy running nearly every aspect of the business, including inventory and POS. Remy recounts the origin of her bestselling shark sweaters from a COVID-era T-shirt, plus a new octopus design, and describes pricing based on what she'd personally pay. On this week's Modern Retail Podcast, hosts Gabriela Barkho and Melissa Daniels are joined by reporter Mitchell Parton to discuss the themes and trends that dominated retail in 2025. The year certainly didn't play out the way that many in the retail industry were initially expecting, as tariffs upended many companies' carefully laid plans for the year. Still, there were pockets of hope. Even though there weren't as many IPOs this year as some in the industry hoped there would be, there were still some promising acquisitions, like Church & Dwight buying hand sanitizer brand Touchland, and Harry's parent company Mammoth Brands snapping up diaper brand Coterie. Plus, consumers were still willing to turn out and spend -- even for hot trends and products that seemingly came out of nowhere, like Labubus. The episode gets into: A look back at how the Modern Retail Podcast team did with its 2025 predictions at the start of the year, involving M&A, TikTok Shop and tariffs. Why private labels dominated this year. Why 2025 was an eventful year for big-box retail, as companies like Costco, Walmart and Target had to navigate big changes. How the biggest buzzword of the year, AI, shaped retail in 2025.

Parenting a child with ADHD can bring moments of frustration, guilt, and uncertainty, but also connection, growth, and hope. In this week's episode, we're joined by local advocates from ADHDKC who are helping families navigate the journey with confidence and compassion. In our conversation, we discuss: How Jeremy and Kristen each found their calling in ADHD advocacy and how it became personal for their families. On this week's episode of The Modern Retail Podcast, co-hosts Gabriela Barkho and Melissa Daniels discuss Mammoth Brands' acquisition of Coterie, a luxury diaper brand that's had a fast-growing subscription business since 2021. While the terms of the deal are undisclosed, it's a big move for Mammoth whose portfolio up until now has included adult body care and grooming brands like Harry's, Flamingo and Lume. Then they unpack the news that Unilever is offloading luxury skincare brand Kate Somerville 10 years after its acquisition. It's now owned by Rare Beauty Brands, which also skincare brands Patchology and Dot Dot Dash. But it's another sign that Unilever is looking to simply its portfolio and get out of the luxury category, as Unilever also shuttered another brand in the category, Ren Clean Skincare, in July. This week's featured segment is an interview with James Lang, the vp of marketplace at Ulta Beauty (21:22). The company in October announced its first-ever third-party marketplace that's integrated into its website. The move is an attempt to grow e-commerce business without being saddled with inventory, but Lang explains how the company worked quickly and efficiently to stand up the operation within six months after announcing it in March. They discussed: How Ulta learned from other retailers' mistakes when building its marketplace. How it plans to use third-party sellers as a way to jump on trend The challenges and benefits of selling unowned inventory as a trusted legacy brand.

Jess Jacobs is the chief executive officer of Coterie—a premium, high-performing diaper essentials brand. Before Coterie, Jacobs spent years making a name for herself in creative advertising. She got her professional start as a copywriter for an ad agency, working on campaigns for noteworthy brands like Saks Fifth Avenue, LG, and Revlon. She continued her work at Kettle as a Creative Director, partnering with big names like Apple, Nike, and Glossier. Jacobs then transitioned into the personal care industry when she became vice president of creative at Lola, a women-owned feminine care brand that promotes transparency and clean ingredients. Jacobs appreciated Lola's mission, especially after becoming a mom. Having a baby made her more aware of the ingredients in and efficacy of the products she used in her everyday life, such as diapers. When she tried a diaper from Coterie, she fell in love with the product and the brand's mission to make parents' lives easier. She then joined Coterie as its senior vice president of brand, creative, and product management, using everything she'd learned over the years to build the brand into something worthy of its superior product. It wasn't long before she was appointed chief brand officer and later CEO. When he arrived at the house of Jairus, he did not let anyone go in with him except Peter, John, and James, and the child's father and mother. — Luke 8:51 Yesterday my daily-dictionary app sent me the word coterie. This word comes to us from the French language and refers to an “inner circle of friends.” Luke's story of healings in this passage introduces Jesus' coterie—his inner circle of disciples. News had spread about Jesus' teaching and healings, so a crowd gathered as he and his disciples returned to Capernaum. Jairus, a local religious leader, came and pleaded with Jesus to heal his dying daughter. Then, on the way, Jesus was delayed by a woman who desperately needing healing from chronic bleeding. And by the time they reached Jairus's home, the young girl had died. Undaunted, Jesus entered her room anyway, followed by her parents and Peter, John, and James. Why does Jesus choose only Peter, John, and James to see him raise the little girl from death? Although Jesus' purpose isn't entirely clear, we see Peter, John, and James playing important roles later as they bear witness to the identity and power of Jesus, the risen Lord. Indeed, their testimony about Jesus in the New Testament helps to provide the foundations of the good-news message of God's love and salvation in Christ. Jesus has chosen each of us too to share about his amazing love and power so that people everywhere can have new life in him. Lord Jesus, strengthen our faith so that we too can be your witnesses in the world. Amen.

The lack of routine, new, unfamiliar place, and sleeping in a new bed can make our kids feel out of control, which makes them act out of control. Cue: lots of meltdowns. One solution I've found to making summer trips actually relaxing? Airbnb. You can search for a place that's already set up for kids with toys, nightlights, and books, so it feels a lot more like “home” than a hotel. Have you ever thought your own home could be perfect for a family visiting your area? If you're traveling this summer, you can become an Airbnb host while you're away.
