Episode 377: Investing in Your Health

Your health may well be the most important investment you ever make, and the earlier you start, the better your outcomes are likely to be. In this episode, Ben Felix is joined by Ben Wilson, Portfolio Manager and Head of M&A at PWL Capital, who steps in as today's co-host to unpack why decisions about exercise, nutrition, sleep, and mental well-being matter just as much as financial ones. They draw clear parallels between compounding wealth and compounding health, showing how small, consistent habits can add up to lasting benefits.  Choosing an exercise routine, healthy diet, or financial plan is less about quick fixes and more about finding an evidence-based approach you can stick with over time. Along the way, Ben Felix shares his personal health story with cancer, and the two Bens break down the four pillars of health before reflecting on how relationships and resilience play into long-term happiness. The episode also tackles an essential financial planning topic: the questions every client should ask about their advisor's succession plan. Listen in for a thoughtful conversation that connects the dots between living well and planning wisely! Key Points From This Episode: (0:00:00) An introduction to Ben Wilson and an overview of today's topics. (0:02:01) Breaking down OneDigital's $7 billion recapitalization (and why it's a good thing). Shiyan Koh, Managing Partner of Hustle Fund and Jeremy Au discuss three main topics: 1. Down Rounds, Recaps, & the Psychological Implications: Jeremy and Shiyan talk about the complex dynamics startups face when fundraising expectations aren't met. Shiyan shares that startups consider accepting down rounds, which might come as an ego blow, or considering recap, rewriting the cap table to accommodate new investors and ensure the incentive for existing stakeholders. Jeremy explains that it's pivotal for management teams to exhibit their adaptability and lessons learned, both at a company and personal level, while making actionable changes, such as cost-cutting or strategic shifts, that validate their readiness for the next phase. 2. Failure Patterns in Southeast Asia: They explore common failure patterns that often result in down rounds and recapitalizations, such as market saturation, lack of product differentiation, and rapid, uncontrolled expansion. Shiyan notes that many startups in Southeast Asia share these failure patterns due to a mix of hyper-competition, immature ecosystems, and differences in consumer behavior across countries in the region. Jeremy adds that external economic factors and regulatory changes, especially in diverse markets like Southeast Asia, can also lead to such scenarios. They advise founders to keep a close watch on market trends and be agile in their strategies. 3. The Role of the Founder and Investors on the Board: They stress the pivotal roles that both founders and investors play during challenging times and highlight the necessity for founders to maintain open lines of communication with their investors, sharing both good and bad news. Investors should also offer guidance and support. They share that effective boards can facilitate difficult but necessary conversations about layoffs and pivoting and that the founder's role also shifts from being a visionary to being a crisis manager, which is crucial for the survival of the startup. They also discuss the significance of customer segmentation for maximum business impact, mental resilience, and emotional intelligence for founders during tumultuous times, strategies to generate revenue such as lending and SaaS models, and the importance of concentrating on a single product or offering before expanding. Brian D. Corbett is the Founder and Managing Partner of CCG Advisors, an Atlanta-based investment banking firm founded in 1997. He has over 25 years of experience representing the owners of successful, privately-held companies in the maximization and monetization of their companies via strategic sales, private equity recapitalizations, and ESOPS. Mr. Corbett and his team at CCG have closed hundreds of transactions with purchase price totaling billions dollars. They have successfully represented clients in a wide range of industries covering the broad sectors of manufacturing, service, and distribution. Examples of specific transaction experience would include healthcare and professional services, consumer products, commercial and residential services, food manufacturing and distribution, building products and services, construction, facility services, telecommunications, utility services, architecture and engineering, and automotive among others. In addition to serving clients in a wide range of industries, Brian is recognized for his national practice in the commercial landscape industry. Over the last 20 years, he and his firm have closed more transactions in the commercial landscape industry than any other firm. Through expertise and unique relationships, CCG has transitioned the industry from old-guard buyers to new, as evidenced by five market entrants acquiring their initial platform from CCG. Brian's intimate understanding of the issues facing family owned companies allows him to guide his clients through the complex, and oftentimes, emotional process of selling their business. By focusing on helping CCG's clients achieve their personal and financial goals, he is known for maximizing the value of his client's companies and establishing real and enduring client relationships.
