Overdrive: Cars, Transport and Culture

A wide-ranging edition of Overdrive examines how transport policy, motoring costs and changing consumer behaviour are reshaping Australian mobility. David Brown and Paul Murrell debate apartment parking mandates, shifting new-car pricing, church-based car sharing and whether high-speed buses could outperform costly rail projects. They also unpack the risks and realities of extended warranties, political “U-turns”, Jaguar's controversial EV naming strategy and road test the latest Suzuki Swift hybrid hatch. Parking Policy, Warranty Risks, Reimagining Buses Episode Breakdown • Apartment Parking Debate — 00:01 • Car Discounts and Market Shifts — 00:23 • Church Car Sharing Trial — 00:34 • High-Speed Bus Concept — 00:43 • Extended Warranty Concerns — 00:56 • Jaguar's “Type Zero 1” Naming — 01:42 • Suzuki Swift Hybrid Review — 01:48 Apartment Parking Debate The program opens with discussion around a Grattan Institute report claiming mandatory parking minimums are adding major costs to apartment developments. David Brown and Paul Murrell argue the issue is more complex than headline figures suggest, particularly when balancing resident needs, on-street congestion and transport alternatives. They question whether governments should dictate parking requirements or let the market decide, while also warning against simplistic “one-size-fits-all” urban planning policies. The broader conversation explores density, public transport limitations and the social cost of inadequate parking infrastructure. Car Discounts and Market Shifts The hosts note a dramatic turnaround in the new-car market, with manufacturers now offering aggressive EOFY incentives after years of shortages and waiting lists. Electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids are seeing especially heavy discounting. They discuss negotiation tactics, depreciation concerns and how sudden price cuts affect both new and used vehicle values. The conversation also touches on how emissions rules may influence future vehicle pricing and fleet choices. Church Car Sharing Trial A University of Sydney project involving church-based car sharing sparks discussion about community transport behaviour. The idea encourages parishioners to travel together rather than individually, potentially reducing congestion, parking demand and emissions. Brown argues these initiatives work best when practical benefits are demonstrated rather than simply promoted as moral obligations. The segment also revisits broader themes of social connection, community responsibility and smarter transport use. High-Speed Bus Concept California's proposal for high-speed buses using dedicated freeway lanes prompts debate about whether buses deserve renewed attention as efficient transport solutions. The hosts compare the concept with the escalating costs of high-speed rail projects in both the US and Australia. Murrell argues buses offer greater flexibility and potentially lower infrastructure costs, while Brown highlights the limitations of rail when destinations lie outside major corridors. Comfort, practicality and regional connectivity become key themes. Extended Warranty Concerns A listener's question about a costly Mercedes-Benz extended warranty leads to an in-depth discussion about warranty value, exclusions and servicing obligations. The hosts explain how third-party warranties can create complications and why consumers must carefully read conditions. They also explore dealer incentives, manufacturer goodwill claims and the importance of documented servicing history. The segment stresses calm negotiation and escalation to manufacturers where legitimate faults arise outside formal warranty periods. Jaguar's “Type Zero 1” Naming Jaguar's naming strategy for its upcoming EV receives a sceptical response. Brown and Murrell question the logic behind “Type Zero 1”, arguing it disrupts Jaguar's established naming heritage such as C-Type and E-Type. The discussion broadens into branding, language structure and how overcomplicated product names often require unnecessary explanation — a sign, they suggest, of weak marketing execution. Suzuki Swift Hybrid Review The latest Suzuki Swift hybrid is assessed as an affordable, efficient and practical hatchback that remains true to its roots. The hosts praise its value, compact dimensions and real-world usability, while acknowledging compromises in refinement and safety technology. They discuss hybrid efficiency, suspension design, pricing and the continued appeal of small hatchbacks in a market dominated by SUVs. Safety ratings and consumer attitudes toward crash protection also receive close attention. In construction, manufacturing, and facilities, that mess shows up when a project is technically complete — but operations still does not have what they need to maintain the equipment. Do you have to get your car serviced by the dealer to avoid voiding the warranty? While you don't necessarily have to, manufacturers require specific equipment and supplies to be used during the servicing process, and using alternatives can impact the warranty. The independent mechanic also has to adhere to the servicing schedule and keep complete documentation. Motor Trade Association Dealer Expert Larry Fellowfield told Kerre Woodham that while dealerships often cost more than independent mechanics, it comes down to the specific training and equipment they're required to have. Permanent Load Reduction As a Sales Driver - Short #284

HVAC School - For Techs, By Techs

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 28, 2026 25:36

This short podcast episode is Jeremy Begley's Bry-X session from the 7th Annual HVACR Training Symposium: "Permanent Load Reduction in HVAC – The Hidden Driver of Long-Term Sales."  Some common customer complaints we hear as HVAC contractors include high humidity, high electric bills, noise, and uncomfortable rooms. The typical HVAC solution is to change the equipment or ductwork, such as by downsizing the unit, adding ancillary dehumidification, or modifying the ductwork. If we can't solve the problem, the customer will ultimately choose a different contractor, no matter how hard we try to modify the HVAC system. However, we may be able to use our thorough load calculations to turn our attention to the building and find ways to reduce the overall loads. We expose problems with the structure and can solve them with permanent load reduction strategies, rather than the equipment and ductwork modifications, and serve customers better while earning more money. Key performance indicators (KPIs) drive money in a business, and ServiceTitan has identified five KPIs closely linked to profit: callbacks, first-time fix rate, warranty claims, comfort complaints, and average ticket. Callbacks are often driven by comfort complaints, which may occur when we modify equipment but not the envelope and vice versa. Warranty claims occur when the equipment can't work as well or efficiently as intended, such as when the load doesn't match the equipment and strains the unit. When we solve these problems, we become trusted advisors and increase customer satisfaction. The customer will continue to work with a company that solves their problems and will recommend HVAC businesses to their family and friends, which also drives sales.  Permanent load reduction requires us to understand load calculations thoroughly, but it's a means for HVAC companies to control outcomes. It requires a mindset change, but when we control system outcomes and increase customer satisfaction, we earn trust and earn more sales in return.   Have a question that you want us to answer on the podcast? #613: 8 Colorado Landlord Laws You Need to Know in 2026

Denver Real Estate Investing Podcast

2026 Colorado landlord laws introduced more housing-related bills than any year in recent memory — and landlords nearly paid a steep price. One proposal would have let tenants halt evictions mid-process with claims as vague as “transportation issues.” Another would have required landlords to attach a full lease to every demand notice. Neither passed — but the margin was closer than most investors realize. Chris Lopez sits down with Brandon Scholten, owner of Keyrenter Denver and a deeply active voice in Colorado landlord advocacy. Brandon manages over 1,100 doors across the metro area and has held a personal rental portfolio since 2012. He’s been tracking Colorado’s housing legislation for years and came to this conversation with his most detailed briefing yet. If you own rentals in Colorado, understanding Colorado landlord laws in 2026 is no longer optional. This episode covers every bill that moved through the session — what passed, what was killed, and what’s quietly still working its way through the process. Brandon breaks down real case studies from his own managed properties, including a mold remediation on Laden Street that triggered the new habitability law’s full alternate housing requirements, and a domestic violence case where both spouses filed simultaneously. In This Episode We Cover: The eviction bill that nearly passed — and the 80 people who showed up to stop it Colorado’s new utility billing clarification: how to allocate shared utilities without sub-metering (which was running $9,000+ per building) What the warranty of habitability expansion actually requires when a tenant reports mold — 72-hour containment, alternate housing, and a daily per diem The 30-day notice rule now baked into Colorado law for federally backed properties How the domestic violence bill plays out when both parties in a lease file simultaneously The fee disclosure law in effect since January 2026 — and why Zillow compliance is still inconsistent New security deposit rules: 10-year useful life on carpet, itemized receipts required, and walkthrough rights The direction of Colorado landlord laws in 2026 is clear — and the investors who stay informed are the ones who stay protected. Welcome back to RV Hour, the official RV lifestyle podcast hosted by Larry McNamara, CEO of Giant Recreation World. In Episode 151, we're diving into two topics every RV owner and future buyer needs to understand — how the Priority RV Network works and what smart RV buyers should know before trading in or upgrading in 2026. Whether you're shopping for your first RV, looking to upgrade your travel trailer, or thinking about trading in your current camper, this episode is packed with insider information from the RV industry. Larry is joined by Nicole Schantz to talk about the Priority RV Network, one of the most valuable benefits available to RV owners. If you've ever worried about getting service while traveling across the country, this network may completely change how you think about RV ownership. What You'll Learn in Episode 151 Priority RV Network – What It Is and Why It Matters Nicole Schantz explains how the Priority RV Network helps RV owners receive service while traveling across the United States. Instead of waiting weeks for service while you're on the road, participating dealers across the country work together to help traveling RVers get back on the road faster. If you plan to travel extensively, this is one of the most valuable benefits you can have as an RV owner. 2026 RV Trade-In & Buying Tips You Need to Hear If you're planning to upgrade your RV in 2026, here are three important tips discussed on this episode: 1. Know Your Trade Value Before You Shop Many RV owners underestimate how much their current RV may be worth. Trade-in values can help significantly reduce the cost of upgrading to a newer model. 2. Look Beyond Just the Price A lower price doesn't always mean the best value. Warranty coverage, dealership support, and long-term service availability are just as important as the purchase price. 3. Shop With a Dealer That Supports You After the Sale Buying an RV is just the beginning of the journey. Service support, parts availability, and nationwide dealer networks can make a huge difference in your ownership experience. Featured Units From GRW's Hot List This week we're highlighting one of the exclusive sale units from Giant Recreation World's Hot List: 2025 Dutchmen Colorado 29BHC – Palm Bay Location On sale now for only $28,949 This bunkhouse travel trailer is a fantastic option for families looking for an affordable RV with plenty of sleeping space and modern features. Snap-on may be the headline brand, but it's not the only way to build a serious mechanic tool setup. We walk through the tool brands professional mechanics reach for when they want strong build quality, fair pricing, and a warranty that actually helps when something breaks. Along the way, we talk about what “premium tools” really means in a working garage, and why availability and easy replacement can matter more than status. We also get honest about the kind of buyer pain that never shows up in a catalog: the lifetime warranty that turns into a dead end. From a torque wrench that won't lock to the reality of ownership changes and manufacturing shifts, we share why researching warranty process and support is part of smart tool buying. If you're searching for the best Snap-on alternatives, best mechanic tool brands, or how to build a toolkit on a budget, this segment is built for you. Then we switch gears into pure car culture and driving destinations with seven national hot rod events to put on your calendar, from Goodguys shows and Pigeon Forge to the Woodward Dream Cruise. We close with a detailed 2026 Chevy Equinox EV review, covering trims, styling, interior tech, MPGe efficiency talk, range expectations, and how it stacks up against rivals like the Tesla Model Y, Mustang Mach-E, and Hyundai Ioniq 5. If you enjoyed this mix of tools, road trips, and real-world car reviews, subscribe, share the show with a fellow car person, and leave us a rating and review.Be sure to subscribe for more In Wheel Time Car Talk! The Lupe' Tortilla RestaurantsLupe Tortilla in Katy, Texas Gulf Coast Auto ShieldPaint protection, tint, and more!Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. Recently, Nirākulā, my wife, and I have been getting our affairs in order—trying to make sure that we don't have any extra stuff (because things pile up) and making sure that every paper we have is accounted for: all the accounts and everything like that. And there are a lot of papers. Looking through the papers, I came across a file full of warranties for various appliances, from small to large. Every one of them had some kind of guarantee, at least for some time. Most of them have run out. But there is one we can't find anywhere. We looked in the attic and the godown. We went through the glove boxes in our car and—you know those drawers that have a combination of many different kinds of papers and you're not sure? We went through those too, and we couldn't find a contract that guaranteed how long we were going to stay in this body. Apparently, we didn't get one. At least, my parents didn't tell me about it. In the Bhagavad-gītā, Kṛṣṇa describes how this human life is temporary but very useful. In fact, that's also in the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam—a famous verse spoken by the avadhūta brāhmaṇa who lived in the wilderness (which is not a bad idea; nobody can bug you out there). He met with King Yadu, who was traveling with his retinue. When the King interviewed the avadhūta brāhmaṇa, he could understand that this was a self-realized person. He asked him how he became self-realized, and the brāhmaṇa said, "I have twenty-four gurus. They are here with me." King Yadu looked around and said, "I don't see anybody here." Then the brāhmaṇa began to enunciate the various gurus that he followed, starting with the mountain. It was tolerant; although it was smashed by lightning bolts and clouds poured water, it still stood firm and yet provided crystal-clear water and minerals to everybody. The tree was mentioned, and many other entities, both moving and inert. Then he gave this famous verse, which I've heard many times from many speakers on the Bhāgavatam, and which Śrīla Prabhupāda quoted frequently as well (SB 11.9.29): labdhvā su-durlabham idaṁ bahu-sambhavānte mānuṣyam artha-dam anityam apīha dhīraḥ tūrṇaṁ yateta na pated anu-mṛtyu yāvan niḥśreyasāya viṣayaḥ khalu sarvataḥ syāt At the very end of the verse, syāt means something is coming up. What is available or what is coming? He said viṣayaḥ—sense gratification. Sarvataḥ—where is sense gratification? Everywhere. It's available to everyone, including little critters like the salamanders, the frogs, and the fish; they all have access to sense gratification. So, what the Avanti Brāhmaṇa was pointing out is that it's not a big deal. Because if salamanders and frogs can get it for free, why should you work so hard for it? He said what this human life is especially meant for is to take this temporary amount of time that we have (since we don't have a warranty and don't know how long we'll be here) and utilize it to transfer ourselves to the eternal atmosphere: the spiritual world. ------------------------------------------------------------ To connect with His Grace Vaiśeṣika Dāsa, please visit https://www.fanthespark.com/next-steps/ask-vaisesika-dasa/?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=launch2025 https://vaisesikadasayatra.blogspot.com/ ------------------------------------------------------------ Add to your wisdom literature collection: https://iskconsv.com/book-store/?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=launch2025 https://www.bbtacademic.com/books/?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=launch2025 https://thefourquestionsbook.com/?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=launch2025 ------------------------------------------------------------ Join us live on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FanTheSpark/ Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/sound-bhakti/id1132423868 For the latest videos, subscribe https://www.youtube.com/@FanTheSpark For the latest in SoundCloud:

In this episode of Drive Radio: The Extra Mile, John Rush and Luke Cashman pull back the curtain on one of the most pressured parts of buying a car: extended warranties versus extended service contracts. What's the legal difference? Who can actually sell a true “extended warranty”? And why do dealerships push these products so aggressively in the F&I office? John explains how the Magnuson-Moss Act protects your right to service your vehicle anywhere—and why you don't have to return to the dealership for routine maintenance to keep your warranty intact. He also exposes the eye-opening profit margins behind extended contracts—some topping 200%. What about those relentless “your warranty is about to expire” calls? How do you know what's legitimate and what's a scam? And when it comes to used cars, does the risk increase? Most importantly, John offers a different strategy: what if you skipped the contract altogether and self-insured instead? Could setting aside $50 a month give you more control—and more peace of mind—than any third-party plan ever could? If you've ever felt pressured in a dealership, worried about repairs, or wondered whether extended coverage is worth it, this episode gives you the tools to decide confidently.

Pool Pros text questions hereWayne goes full soapbox after watching an HGTV/Magnolia renovation show that builds a commercial-style pool using “biofilters” as a chemical-free solution—without ever addressing sanitation, oxidation, or code-required disinfectant residuals. Steve backs him up with real-world field logic: filtration doesn't equal disinfection, and “natural” systems can turn into expensive science projects fast. Then the episode shifts into the Insurance Interlude with Pat Grignon (California Pool Association), digging into warranty claims, liability, how insurance carriers investigate faults, and why documentation (photos/video/notes) protects your business for years.Segment 1 — Wayne's HGTV rant: Biofilters, “natural pools,” and reality TV chemistry (00:00–25:14)Key takeawaysFiltration is not sanitation. Even DE filtration doesn't catch bacteria/viruses reliably because pathogens are below typical filter micron ratings.Biofilters often rely on nitrifying bacteria (Wayne names Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter) that convert:ammonia → nitrites → nitratesWayne's red flag: nitrates feed algae, and there's no easy chemical “undo” once nitrates climb—drain and replace is often the only practical correction.Real-world reality check: if bathers are involved, ammonia shows up (sweat/urine), and you still need an actual sanitizer system. The pool “looked great” on reveal day… but nobody wanted to get in (which Steve jokes is basically the fate of many pools anyway).Wayne predicts the biofilter setup becomes a regret purchase—$15,000 spent before eventually converting to conventional filtration + sanitation.Quoteable moments“Natural pool” = Wayne's eyes bug out.“People want to swim in water, not chemicals… but safe water takes chemistry.”Steve's “pimp my ride but for houses” comparison for the show's projects.Segment 2 — Insurance Interlude w/ Pat Grignon: Warranty work, liability, and documenting the mess (25:14–40:18)What's coveredSteve explains the reality of warranty service: no urgency unless someone becomes the “pain in the ass” pushing it forward.Pat outlines how manufacturers protect themselves:Warranty/service stations often required to carry high insurance limits and endorsements that shield the manufacturer.Waiver of subrogation explained:Normally, your insurer pays then may subrogate (recover) from a manufacturer if a defect caused the loss.Waiver blocks that upstream recovery—so your policy can get stuck holding the bag even when the part was defective.Notable mentionsHGTV / Magnolia Network renovation show: “Building Outside the Lines”Movie drop: True Romance (Hans Zimmer soundtrack, Tarantino script)Brands mentioned in discussion/examples: Hayward, Jandy (AquaLink), Pentair, plus references to warranty stations and commercial systems.Call to action (from the hosts)Got a technical question or topic idea? Bryston's roots trace back to medical electronics before the company transitioned into high-performance audio in the 1970s, when Chris Russell began designing amplifiers that would define the brand's reputation. In this discussion, Tanner reflects on Bryston's history, its long-standing commitment to manufacturing in Canada, how and why aspects of the famous warranty have evolved, and what the next 50 years could look like for one of high-end audio's most enduring companies. We design concrete for 75 years. So why are we okay watching it fail in 12 to 24 months? That's the uncomfortable question Seth Tandett puts on the table with Dr. Jon Belkowitz in this episode. Codes, specifications, and budgets are still written around a 50–75 year design life. But in the field, concrete surfaces are scaling, wearing, and failing in as little as a year or two. Instead of revisiting that original promise, the industry seems stuck reacting to failures instead of asking why they're happening. This conversation challenges some long‑held assumptions about specifications, durability, performance testing, and why compressive strength tells us almost nothing about whether concrete will actually last. This isn't about theory. It's about what's showing up on real projects—and why no one seems willing to talk about the gap between what we design for and what we're getting.WHAT YOU'LL LEARN · Why the 75‑year design life quietly disappeared from industry conversations · How concrete surfaces went from 20–30 year service expectations to failing in 12–24 months · Why compressive strength is one of the most forgiving—and misleading—tests we rely on · What durability indicators actually matter if service life is the goal · How prescriptive specs box everyone in and protect no one · Why performance‑based specifications are the only real path forward · What Peter Taylor's work gets right about protecting the concrete surface · How warranty language misses durability altogether · Why practical field intelligence keeps getting ignoredCHAPTERS 00:00 – Intro and how to support the Concrete Logic Podcast 03:42 – Why we stopped talking about 75‑year design life 06:30 – The disconnect between specs and field performance 08:59 – Why compressive strength doesn't equal durability 12:07 – The industry's reliance on paper over field reality 14:34 – Why specifications need to change 15:22 – Prescription vs performance‑based specs 19:12 – What should actually be specified for durability 21:28 – Using performance tests to enforce accountability 25:22 – Warranty periods and real‑world consequences 28:07 – The concrete surface as the first line of defense 31:30 – What the industry really lost—and how to get it backGUEST INFO Dr. Jon Belkowitz Intelligent Concrete https://www.concretelogicpodcast.com/guests/jon-belkowitz/CONCRETE LOGIC PARTNERS INTELLIGENT CONCRETE Concrete not behaving the way it should?
