Mazda CX-70 five-seat all-wheel-drive SUV - impressive interior quality.Mazda now has a very comprehensive range of large SUV’s – I’m driving the CX-70 introduced late last year, and basically, a five-seat version of the large seven-seat CX-90, it comes in six-cylinder turbo petrol or turbo diesel with mild hybridassistance, in two all-wheel drive grades, the GT or the Azami. The 3.3-litreturbodiesel CX-70 D50E GT at $77,970 plus on-road costs really impressed mesomewhat of a surprise given I didn’t like the CX-90 model I drove early last yearwith its underdone and somewhat hard riding suspension. Mazda Australiasubsequently retuned the suspension and the CX-70 also reflects that update.The ride perhaps still a little hard however the GT model is a rather sporty largeSUV fitted with 21-inch alloy wheels and is very competent in the way it handles.Not inexpensive like all the large Mazda SUV’s and their latest pricing has pushedwell into prestige territory. Having said that they are very highly equipped. TheCX-70 GT gaining dual 12.3-inch interior screens, heated leather seats, adaptiveLED headlights, a panoramic sunroof, and a full suite of advanced safetytechnology. Driving Kia’s Carnival people-mover – the high-grade 2.2-litre turbo diesel 8-speed automatic GT-Line at $73,060 plus on-road costs. A spacious three-row 8-seater, and as a large family carrier nothing comes close. Kia Australia hastweaked the suspension on the latest series, with modified front springs,upgraded shock absorbers and recalibrated power steering, and it makes theCarnival shrink around you, behind the wheel feeling much smaller than it reallyis aided by an excellent 360-degree camera and front, side and rear sensors.148kW of power, 440Nm of torque gives it gutsy low down pulling power althoughas a front driver it can get some torque steer pull through the steering wheelunder heavy acceleration. And it’s a shame in some ways it doesn’t have all-wheel drive. Economy, Kia claims 6.5L/100km which I got close too and with a 72-litre fuel tank the range it offers is impressive. Whether full laden or just with adriver the suspension tune is compliant with great ride on any surface. With threeavailable drive modes a really pleasant vehicle behind the wheel apart from theoverzealous lane keep assist, driver attention monitor and speed sign recognitionwhich is simply over-reactive. Driving the relatively new Mazda CX-80 all-wheel drive SUV, the seven-seatversion of Mazda’s five-seat CX-60, I’m driving the entry CX-80 Pure, the mostaffordable of the 10-model range at $54,950 plus on-road costs – the Pure has oneengine choice a 3.3-litre turbo petrol six-cylinder with 48-volt mild hybridassistance linked to an 8-speed automatic. The CX-80 replaces the long standingCX-8 and CX-9 models. Certainly, its seven-passenger versatility is excellent, agreat family vehicle, nicely specified, spacious in the second row with five adults,the turbo-petrol engine impressive with strong mid-range performance, but as arather heavy all-wheel drive a little thirsty on a strong throttle, I managed 11.8L/100km, and thankfully it runs on 91 grade petrol. Suspension tune streets aheadof the CX-60 I drove early last year which, after much criticism, Mazda Australiadid a re-work on later and the ride quality and handling on this new CX-80 isvastly better. Gear shift quality on the early CX-60 has also been addressed andobviously has carried over to the CX-80. In this episode of the HVAC School podcast, Bryan shares his "Manufacturer Responsibility Manifesto," a document he wrote over two years ago but held back from publishing until now. The manifesto addresses growing concerns about the burden being placed on HVAC contractors, particularly smaller businesses, due to manufacturing quality issues and warranty policies. The industry has undergone significant changes since the 1990s, including stricter refrigerant regulations and an increase in parts failures. While manufacturers offer longer warranty periods now than in the past (often 10+ years compared to 3-5 years previously), these warranties often don't cover crucial expenses like refrigerant, brazing rods, fittings, and labor costs. This leaves contractors in a difficult position of either absorbing these costs or charging customers and potentially damaging relationships. The manifesto calls for manufacturers to take greater responsibility for their products, particularly during the warranty period. Bryan proposes that manufacturers should reimburse contractors for total costs (including labor) for manufacturer-caused repairs within the first year, and cover parts and ancillary materials (including refrigerant) during the subsequent warranty period. He argues that this would incentivize manufacturers to improve product quality and reduce environmental impact, as they would bear more of the financial responsibility for failures and refrigerant losses. I went to Roberto Venn School of Luthiery in 1997. Worked at Vince's Backstage music in Lafayette, La. until 2000. I then moved to the Hamptons, which was a mistake for my career. Ended up working other jobs, as well as repair to pay the bills. 2002 Moved to Nashville and ended up working for a company in Franklin that did factory refurbishments and Warranty repairs. I also had my own small shop and did a little touring with small bands. In December 06 I started working for Gruhn and was there till Aug. 2024. Even working for shops I've always had my own shop to do personal customer repairs. At Gruhn, I was a Repairman and Appraiser. I was tasked with going through the Electric instruments to inspect for originality. One of the repairs I did a lot of was Pickup rewinds. I've been rewinding pickups since 1999. Although I got most of my experience at Gruhn. I started building Pickups around 05. I have built and rewound pickups for a lot of folks In Nashville. Mostly players. Issac Brock of Modest Mouse uses my pickups in the Wicks guitars he uses in the studio and on tour. One of the Tele's Jack White uses in the Studio has one of my rewinds in the bridge position.I've worked for Songwriters like Kent Blazy (Garth Brooks, Patti Loveless, Chris Young), and producers like Mickey Jack Cones (Carrie Underwood, George Strait, etc.). I've worked with Jack White doing repairs, customization, and Tour Support since 2010. The cover of one of his 45's features him, one of the guitars I customized, and the Muppets. Through Gruhn I worked on instruments owned by a myriad of stars. I also curate the Private collection of the CEO of Gibson, Cesar Gueikian. Large TV Warranty Experience I've meant to write about my TCL TV experience for quite some time. What can I say, life is just busy. I have two more kids than Braden! When I heard a couple of weeks ago a question about warranty experiences for large TVs, I thought I had put off writing this story long enough. After listening to Braden hype up TCL TVs for at least a couple of years, as well as reading many reviews for TVs and watching the developing technology trends at the time, in September 2020 I ordered a TCL 75R635, a so-called 6-series Roku 4K QLED 75-inch TV with a respectable 240-zone backlight array. The TV had been announced earlier in the year, perhaps at CEDIA or CES and I was ready to replace my 10-year old Panasonic plasma HD TV with this TCL model. I watched over the next many months for the TV to become available. While I hoped for a sale, I also knew from watching similar TVs that the stock tended to get bought out pretty quickly. Amazon finally had the TV available to order in September 2020 and I ordered immediately for a retail price of $1399 plus tax. I received it on October 3. The TV worked great for about 6 months. In late March 2021, the screen suddenly and mysteriously slowly faded to a sort of dark backlit state in the middle of whatever my wife was watching. A backlight was on, but no picture elements were displayed. You could still hear the TV making sounds associated with navigating the menu when pushing buttons on the remote. I started a warranty claim March 31 nothing I was well within the 1-year warranty period. I don't recall exact timing, but a service tech was scheduled to attempt to repair the TV within 10 days. The day he was supposed to come, he called me beforehand and said he'd already been trying to repair the same model TV for another purchaser. He asked me a couple of questions about what the TV was doing. His conclusion over the phone and based on trying to work on the same model of TV was that it was not repairable and he would elevate the case to sending a replacement. Here is where the process got a little frustrating. TCL honored the claim. However, the process became surprisingly slow. As I said, I don't recall exactly when the service tech came, but if it was Day 10, that would have been April 9. TCL told me on April 23 the TV was finally being shipped. It was considered a freight shipment, so TCL handed me off to Pilot Deliveries from that point forward. I had to contact Pilot to arrange delivery if you can believe that! I also had to coordinate with Pilot to pick up the defective unit. I did all of this. By May 3, I still had not received the replacement. It took another call to TCL at this point to investigate the problem because tracking showed it bouncing all over the map. I think it came from China. Landed in California, then I think it made it to Nashville, then Chattanooga, back to Nashville, and hopped over me in Huntsville to wind up in Mobile, Alabama. By this point, Pilot seemed to finally acknowledge they weren't handling this delivery well. It did get flown one last time to Huntsville. Then they sent the TV on an unmarked box truck (No "Pilot" markings) with a kid who was maybe 20 to deliver the TV to my home. The TV was the only thing on the truck. And, it had fallen over which I suspected when I came around to the back of the truck and saw the driver just finishing standing the box back up. The driver admitted this was the case when I asked. But, jumping to the end, the TV has always worked fine. I had to help get the very large box in the house because they should have sent two people to handle this delivery. This was May 6 when I finally took possession. So, a little over 5-week process. I never expected it to take that long. The rumors amongst forums at the time were that because this was most likely a first production run model (remember, I bought it as soon as it was available), there were manufacturing defects. And the failure itself was likely because TCL was wiring the backlight array in-series, so if one light goes out, they all stop working. I think the “dark light” that we could see came from the edges, so maybe the light array was separated into zones somehow. I guess I'll never really know. Finally, some anecdotes: Anecdote #1: I am a sentimental sort and I was a little sad to see the original go as me and my kids had broken in that first TV watching the then new Mandalorian series which we greatly enjoyed. Anecdote #2: My “finance committee” hates it when we spend “large” amounts of money all at once. In all those years I was listening to you guys, doing research, and waiting for the TV to become available, I banked my Amazon credit card reward points just for a TV. When the time came, I only paid $61.02 out of pocket for this TV. We've greatly enjoyed the TV ever since. I couldn't swing $4000-$5000+ at the time for the 55-inch OLEDs that were out then. But the TCL has always been enjoyable. HDR and Dolby Vision content especially look great for deep dark blacks. Would I buy one similar to this again? Maybe—the technology continues to improve even in just the last 4 years and prices have also come down. There are lots of options. Honestly, I think more about a short throw projector for my next TV based on Ara's experiences. Hope you and the listeners enjoy this story about my warranty experience. Josh Huntsville, AL
