When you were a child your mother made you eat the vegetables whether you wanted to do so or not. Your mother knew what was best for you and you had no choice in the matter. Sometimes, it’s like that between us and God. God asks us to do something we would rather not do. But, God is in charge and we have to do what God says—whether we like it or not. May God bless you as you engage in worship. Please feel free to leave feedback/comments to let us know you joined in worship. Pastor Brad preaches a message on the book of the prophet Jonah and calls us to love our enemies.
Jonah is a well-loved and well-known story. It is an amazing story about a prophet who doesn’t want to prophesy, and the fish that swallowed him. It is really that last bit that captures our attention – who has ever heard of such a thing? The story is truly amazing, which is why so many people doubt its veracity. But we ought not doubt its truthfulness, for Jonah was not penned to give us an fable or a myth, nor even just a good story, but a realistic picture of ourselves and our savior.

There are 146 instances that the number 40 is used in scripture. 5 means grace. 6 is number of man. 7 is number of perfection. 3 is completion. 666 is the number of the beast/complete imperfection. Jonah was a prophet, he was disobedient, and he thought he could hide from God.

We live in a world where we often fall into the mindset of giving mercy to ourselves and "our people" while wanting justice for "those people" - our enemies. As we continue our series on the Minor Prophets, Pastor Scott Savage leads us through the book of Jonah - a book all about God's abundant mercy. In this message, we learn that God loves those we don't like and calls us to take His gospel to them.

Jonah prayed to the Lord, “...I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity..." Jonah 4 v2-3
Jonah answered, “I am a Hebrew and I worship the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.” Jonah 1 v9

"The word of the Lord came to Jonah son of Amittai: Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me. But Jonah ran away from the Lord and headed for Tarshish.” Jonah 1 v1-3

The story of Jonah is about more than a big fish. It is the story of a man who thought he knew better than God, challenging us to consider whether Jesus is Lord of our ups and downs.

As we look to message of the book of Jonah, we may be surprised how little it has to do with a whale. With fresh eyes we look and see that the book is all about God's hear compared to ours.

The book of Jonah is a comical story of a reluctant prophet who tried to avoid God and His missional assignment. In God's mercy He overcame the resistance of the prophet Jonah, in order to display His mercy not only to Nineveh but also to Jonah. God is a missional God who calls His people to join Him in accomplishing His global mission. God's mission overflows from His character, namely that he is gracious, compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. When one fails to align with mission of God it reveals a disconnect with the heart and character of God. That's was the case with Jonah. The thing that should have fueled Jonah mission, the mercy of God for sinners, was the reason He avoided the mission. Jonah knew that God would grant mercy to anybody who turns to Him in repentance. God worked with the brokenness and failures of this reluctant prophet. So we can be encouraged that God too will work through us and regardless of our weakness and failures when we surrender to Him. God used a sinful man and a simple message to turn an entire city himself, so that He may have mercy on them. Imagine what God can and will do through you if you listen and obey His voice regarding the mission He is calling you to participate in!

Many of us are like the prophet Jonah and don’t care about global missions. Yet we should care, because it is God’s purpose for his people. From the story of Jonah, the reluctant missionary: 1. Reluctance is the norm. (Chapter 1) 2. Ever so often we need a devine correction. (Chapter 2) 3. Believe it or not, the gospel has power. (Chapter 3) 4. Respect the Creator not the creation. (Chapter 4) Our God-given identity IS to be missionaries. Follow up: 1. Join a home group that is studying the Missions Curriculum, especially created for this sermon series. 2. Develop a heart for missions by going on a short term mission, like the Richmond Eye Screening July 17-20, 2017.
