Welcome to Botched: A D&D Podcast! No one likes going to the dentist. Even the nicest dentist involves putting a bunch of hooks, picks, and what not into your mouth. Good intentions or not, it's not a pleasant time. A mysterious 24/7 dental office opens up and a few individuals find out just how bad the dentist office can possibly be. Something is very off with this office (aside from being open 24/7). The receptionist REALLY wants to see your teeth, and is always wearing a mask. The orderlies are HUGE and are also masked. They also don't seem to know where the novacaine goes. The doctor who you'll be meeting eventually…well…he's got some rather strange ideas as far as what kind of teeth ought to go in your mouth. Who are the unfortunate souls to find this dentist office? What are its anomalous properties? Can this dentist office be stopped? Why are the players obsessed with the cranking of hogs? Part Two. Social media has trained us to treat connections like disposable apps—add a “friend” in a second, remove them just as easily. But what happens when we treat relationships this way? Without sustainable connections, how can we collaborate, build strong teams, or achieve lasting outcomes? In the last episode, I sat down with Edward J. van Luinen and Tricia Cerrone to explore the power of connection and collaboration. That is part one of a two-part series where we looked at how they had turned a positive work relationship at Disney into a lasting personal friendship and a successful business partnership. Together, they're even co-authoring a book on collaboration. We reflected on their 10-year collaborative journey, sharing how strong connections can lead to meaningful collaborations. Today, in part two, we'll dive deeper into their framework for collaboration, centered on a “noble purpose” and five key behaviours that can transform how we work together. Spoiler alert: their method is far more human-centered than just another software tool. Key Highlights of Our Interview: Why Telling People to ‘Collaborate' Doesn't Actually Work “Think you can just tell your team to collaborate and expect magic? Think again. Collaboration isn't one action—it's a mix of behaviors, and it starts with the individual, not fancy tools or technologies.” Why Collaboration Equals Innovation “Collaboration boosts innovation exponentially. It's not about wasting time competing with colleagues; it's about working together to solve problems and deliver innovative solutions that make your company stand out.” Noble Purpose: More Than Just Vision and Mission “Leaders need to remind their teams of the noble purpose behind their work. Whether it's delivering diapers or developing apps, connecting individuals to the bigger impact they have on customers is key to motivation and collaboration.” The Hidden Barriers to Teamwork: Why Collaboration Fails “From egos to insecurities, collaboration struggles often stem from within. True teamwork begins by addressing these internal challenges, transforming both ourselves and our workplace relationships.” Why Gratitude and Generosity Aren't Just Nice-to-Haves “Generosity creates safety, resourcefulness unlocks solutions, and gratitude gives teams the chance to rest and recover. Together, these behaviors make collaboration more than a buzzword—they make it work.” Connect with us: Host: Vince Chan | Guests: Edward J. Spoiler alert: their method is far more human-centered than just another software tool. Key Highlights of Our Interview: Emotional Banking: The Secret to Long-Lasting Work Relationships “Relationships at work thrive on trust, respect, and mutual goals. By making consistent positive deposits into the ‘emotional bank,' teams can evolve into high-performing units. Delivering results is key, but so is showing up for each other and building something lasting, as Trish and I found over a three-year project.” Collaboration Isn't Just Tools—It's Human Connection “The business world is spending almost $40 billion on collaboration tools, which are a band-aid for our failures to communicate. If you don't have the human behaviours of generosity, resourcefulness, co-creation, action, and gratitude, no technology is going to help your team be happy or collaborate better.” Be the Change You Seek—Gandhi's Wisdom for Collaboration “There's a great quote by Gandhi: ‘Create the change you want to be.' That's the foundation of our collaboration model—being the change and the leader your team is asking you to be.” Connect with us: Host: Vince Chan | Guests: Tricia Cerrone and Edward J. The Dental Association warns more people are turning to the toolbox to fix their teeth, due to the rising cost of appointments. New figures from the group show the price of an average visit - that includes general exams, cleans, x-rays and composite fillings - has gone up by $98 since 2020. Half of people surveyed have avoided going to the dentist because of it. The Association's chief executive Mo Asmo says his members have seen dozens of instances where patients have pulled their teeth out with pliers, used sandpaper to file their teeth, or tried to whiten them with bleach. He is calling for the $1000-a-year grant, which can be accessed by beneficiaries and some low-income workers, to be extended to those who don't quite meet that threshold, but still cannot afford dental.

When a car hit Susan and knocked out a bunch of teeth, her health insurance was supposed to pay for her oral surgery, and she knew it. So why has she had to chase them for 18 months and counting? Getting insurance to pay for anything dental is usually hard, but this had us asking ourselves… is it usually this hard? We connected Susan with law professor Jacqueline Fox — who, when she was practicing law, fought insurers on behalf of patients. And who says Susan has “done everything right.”We've started to wonder whether Susan's troubles could be related to broader accusations against her insurer, Ambetter, the largest provider of plans on the Obamacare marketplace. Got all your teeth? Today I am going to be making myself and probably a lot of you incredibly uncomfortable, because I am going to be talking about the skin-crawling, shudder-inducing process of human teeth extraction. What exactly is the process of tooth extraction? Why do we do it (because I'll tell you right now the answer isn't always “my tooth hurts)? What does the process of removing someone's tooth entail, both today and back in the time before antibiotics and anesthetics? What are the various instruments used to extract teeth, and how much or how little have they changed over the centuries? I am going to go into some excruciating detail about just how and why someone might want to pop those teeth right out of your skull, as well as looking at the fiction and reality of tooth extraction being used as a method of torture. And I won't stop there, you're also going to get a little bedtime story about a dental appointment gone horribly, horribly wrong. It's time to get the pliers out this week on Creeptastic! This first episode covers the earliest ways humans cared for their teeth, including the belief that demons might have something to do with tooth decay. We move all the way up to the 18th century, as dentistry became a profession in the U.S., including a surprising early practitioner. Research: Britannica, The Editors of Encyclopaedia. "Shamash". Jack Thursday - Why is Land Investing Like Pulling Teeth (LA 1751) Transcript: Steven Jack Butala: Jack and Jill here. Jill K DeWit: Hi. Steven Jack Butala: Welcome to the Land Academy Show, entertaining land investment talk. I'm Stephen Jack Butala. Jill K DeWit: And I'm Jill DeWit broadcasting from the Valley of the Sun. Steven Jack Butala: Today's Jack Thursday and I'm going to talk about, "Why is land investing like pulling teeth?" This is a direct quote from Herbert Graham, a career path, now advanced member who we had pleasure of meeting with one time, because there was a brief live event in Phoenix that we were invited to. And we didn't host it but we were invited to it. And recently he said he was having trouble with an escrow agent and he said, "Why is getting a deal closed, like pulling teeth?" Which inspired me to talk about, why is this whole thing like pulling teeth? Because it can be. Jill K DeWit: Sometimes. Steven Jack Butala: Before we get into it, let's take a question posted by one of our members on the landinvestors.com online community. It's free. Sometimes Jill says little things like sometimes and reminds me of my childhood. Jill K DeWit: Oh, I'm sorry. Steven Jack Butala: And don't forget to subscribe on the Land Academy YouTube channel and comment on this show as you like. Jill K DeWit: What does that mean? Steven Jack Butala: It's just funny. Sometimes you just, it's funny. That's how I know I love you, like some of this stuff to do that's quirky. Jill K DeWit: Doesn't sound like it, sound like- Steven Jack Butala: No, it's a compliment. Jill K DeWit: All right. Now I know how you traumatize, it sounds like I'm traumatizing you on reminding me of your childhood and I don't want that. Steven Jack Butala: No, it's all positive. It's like quite the opposite. It's all positive. Jill K DeWit: Matthew wrote, this is more of a success of my mindset shift. I came in hoping I can make this work. That's changed. Here's why last month I brought in $25,000 of profit from a flip. Now I'm in the process of purchasing another two parcels. I already have a funder, one parcels, larger, one smaller, but buy one for 117,000, one realtor put the total combined value at 280,000, wait, buy one parcels larger one small buy for 117,000. Sounds like buying both for that. I'm thinking, one realtor put the total combined value of the two at 280,000 and another realtor put the total combining value at 325,000. We're doubling, we're tripling our number. Hello. Steven Jack Butala: It's way more than that- Jill K DeWit: I'd be happy with either. The mindset shift is incredible now, that I've personally seen incredibly profitable properties come in, I received my usual two week paycheck and I'm very appreciative of it, but I wasn't as excited as I used to be. Jill K DeWit: And not even as close as to as much as I'm making in land. Now I know I can do this business. Oh, I see. You know, I just talked to somebody about this recently too, that the shift in adding a zero and not being afraid to go for these bigger deals. And then once you do a couple of them you're like, huh, and the numbers you throw around are like, let's see what's that? 80, $90,000. Sure. Where do you want me to wire the money when, before you'd be like, holy, oh my gosh. I mean even $8,000. That was a lot. And then you jump ahead and ahead and ahead. Steven Jack Butala: The takeaway that I took from this is that, we all can have personal anecdotes or experiences like this, where one month you look at something and say, there's no way I can do that. Not because I don't think I've had talent or not. I just don't want to put the energy into it. I know I can do it, but I don't want to figure it out. And for whatever reason a month goes by and it's like, I'm doing this and it's not as hard as I thought and I'm actually going to make a business out of it. So we all have things like that. For some kids it's like,

We sipped on a fabulous beer from Ommegang brewery while we discussed trial that is tooth pulling. Desmond is not a fan of pulling his teeth. His mouth is beyond ready to kick out some baby teeth, but he is in no rush. Fortunately, a tooth came out this week. Now we're only 3 teeth behind. In addition to pulling teeth, we discussed "Skoolies." For the uninitiated, a skoolie is a school bus that is converted to an RV. Grab a cold one and have a listen. As always, don't be gross!
On this week's episode your hosts Jeff and Jeremy welcome Domenic, from the band Pulling Teeth, on as a guest co-host. They discuss the eighty-fourth Deathwish, Inc. release (DW082), which is the “Paranoid Delusions | Paradise Illusions” LP by Pulling Teeth. They also discuss (among other things) writing enough material over the pandemic to start a half dozen bands, getting a restraining order before someone else puts one on you, and having Sinbad to be the MC of a hardcore show. In this episode we chat with Mike Riley. Mike is an old and dear friend of Pat and I. Mike is arguably the reason why Pat and I are actually friends. For those of you playing at home, Mike is the lead singer of the seminal Hardcore Band (although I think Dom likes to imagine its metal), Pulling Teeth. Mike is also a founding member of the famous Charm City Art Space, which was a cornerstone of the East Coast independent music scene/ punk scene for over 10 years. Before Pulling Teeth, Mike toured in bands like The Spark, Looks Like Rain, Paper Dragons and others. Mike also has run Toxic Pop Records, off and on for longer than I can remember too. Lastly even with all that, Mike has housed countless bands on tour. Normally I don't write all this shit out. Why am I doing that, you ask? The reason is Mike has been screwed a lot, like a ton. And it is hilarious (Most of the time). Enjoy!
