Sunday Sermons
Rev. Dr. Larry Hayward preaches on the Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time. The Scripture passage is Mark 10:17-22.
The question posed by the rich young man is one that haunts many of us, one that has to do with our ultimate concern for eternal life. We too, seek Jesus for our answer, for we know He has come to seek and to save the lost. And He has found us! But our sinful human nature still continues to ask the same question, “What must I do to be saved?” Jesus' love for us (Mark 10:21) produces the answer. Out of the richness of His love, Jesus' gracious death and resurrection is what saves us, even if/when we doubt that He could/would love a poor, miserable sinner like us!
Have you ever used a checklist? I like checklists. They can help keep things organized, can help get things finished and can serve as a barometer of how we are doing. Checklists can help us see if we are missing anything. Jesus was a checklist guy. There is a story in the Gospels about a man that ran up to Jesus and asked Jesus what it took to inherit eternal life. Jesus gave him a checklist of things. The man checked them off, but really knew there was another thing that he wanted more than eternal life. He even asked Jesus, “What do I still lack?” The man knew and Jesus knew. So Jesus told him. Jesus brought it out in the open. The man was sad. He went away with a box unchecked. Am I missing something, he said? Yes he was.

The story of the rich young ruler teaches us a lot about what it means to be devoted to God. The man thought he understood what being devoted to God was all about, but his conversation with Jesus really challenged his thinking. On Sunday, we will dive into this story, examine our understanding of what it means to be a devoted follower of Jesus, and challenge ourselves to pursue Jesus with all our hearts.

So many get wrapped up in being 'good enough' for God that they make faith more about them and less about God. This message about prayer helps us to seek more of God and less of me.
