Breaking Barriers: A Faith that Won't Quit
Breaking Barriers: A Faith that Won't Quit
Mark 2 unveils a Jesus who is not only a miracle-worker but also a radical teacher challenging the religious norms of His time. He asserts His authority over sickness, sin, societal expectations, and even the Sabbath. The chapter reminds us that faith in Jesus might involve questioning old practices and assumptions, urging us to embrace the transformative power of His teachings.

Continuing with our NEW series called "The Servant King," (A Study of the Gospel of Mark).... I'm sure that you've heard the old cliche, "Once forgiven, always forgiven." Did you know that this is not necessarily true. If I may, I would like to explain... Before we are saved, we live a life that is full of sin. Then, all of a sudden, we begin to feel a change within our hearts (in case you can relate, it feels like we are not satisfied with the life that we have been living). That's when we begin to wonder if Jesus is "knocking on our heart's door, asking to come in." (Spoiler alert...that's exactly what is happening at this point). Little by little, we start to desire to hear and study the word of God, it becomes interesting like it never had before. Then we begin to go to church, listen to the pastor speak the word of God, and our hearts feel convicted because we know that we have been living a sinful life. So we ask God to come in to our hearts and become saved. As you might already know, when we become saved, this means that we have now started a relationship with Jesus, which needs to be nurtured. Through study of the word of God, we learn that because of what Jesus did on the cross, our sins have been forgiven. We also learn that the spirit and the flesh are not always in "tune" with each other. Because, the Holy Spirit now resides within our hearts, we want to do the right thing, but because our flesh is worldly, our bodies desire to do worldly things. This is where we have to really think about our future actions because most of our desires are of a sinful nature, actions that are not in accordance to God's word. Since we tend to be creatures of habit, we sometimes "accidentally" fall into sin only to realize later what we did. But we needn't worry...God has promised us that our sins are forgiven. But if we desire to sin on purpose, knowing exactly what we are doing, all while thinking, "Well, Jesus is going to forgive me anyway...," are we really still forgiven? Does God forgive these kinds of sins? Well, you'll have to tune in to today's teaching, here on this podcast, and listen to Pastor Ben as he answers these questions and more in today's beautiful teaching. "What is this? A new teaching with authority!" This is what we see Jesus do at the start of His ministry. When he calls on Simon and Andrew and tells them, "Follow me," their response is immediate. He is curing people's illnesses, casting out demons, and ultimately declaring his authority. Jesus begins to challenge cultural norms and make people question the possibilities. This is also where we begin to see the Pharisees question His authority, and that sets the stage for the rest of the gospel. The King has arrived, and His arrival has changed everything. Have you ever asked for directions from someone and gotten the most difficult instructions you have ever heard? Sometimes. when asking, there may even be two people talking at the same time offering directions. You go down here for two lights, or is it three and make a right…or maybe it is a left. Then you go straight past the mall, or is it a movie theater and you turn at the blinking light, or it may be just a stop sign….finally you might get the, “You can’t get there from here.” That is exactly what Satan would have you to think as you move toward God. The man in this story is paralyzed and can’t get to where Jesus is teaching nearby because he can’t walk. His friends take him but they can’t get in the front door due to the crowd. The crowd won’t move to let them in because they want to see Jesus. His friends take him to the roof where they have to take off the roof. The friends have to get rope to let him down. If this man and his friends had stopped at any of these obstacles, he would still be paralyzed. But they didn’t stop. If you don’t overcome obstacles, obstacles will overcome you. Satan Says you can’t get there from here, God says, I am the Way.

A story that gives our Lord's example of how to do ministry.
David Eldridge Mark 2:1-12 Jesus commends the friends of the paralytic for their faith. Praying for others is a privilege and responsibility. Do we recognize the authority and access we have to Jesus and his willingness to help?

In this story, we see four men who show us what it looks like to act on our faith in Jesus. Their faith in Jesus is central to the story. Their faith in Jesus moved them to get their friend to Jesus. Their faith in Jesus moved Jesus to forgive and heal their friend. Their faith in Jesus made an eternal difference in their friend’s life. We can impact others for eternity when we act on our faith in Jesus. This passage gives us three characteristics of faith in Jesus when it is lived out.
