Imago Dei pt 4: The Kingly Role of Humanity

These Go To 11

What does it mean that humanity was made to "have dominion"? In this fourth episode of our Imago Dei series, Greg and Nathan unpack the kingly calling at the heart of being made in God's image. From Genesis to Revelation, Scripture paints a royal picture of humanity—not as tyrants or owners, but as vice-regents under the true King. We'll explore how the Bible uses royal language to describe human purpose, how sin has distorted our rule, and how Jesus—our Servant King—restores and redefines our authority through grace. From stewarding the earth to resisting evil and creating beauty, this episode is a deep dive into what it looks like to reign in life the way God intended. Whether you feel powerless or prideful, this episode will remind you: you were made to rule—but only under the rule of Christ. You were made for more than survival—you were made for responsible rulership. Through Christ, we don't grasp at power; we receive grace to serve. Kingship, in God's Kingdom, always looks like love with authority and order shaped by mercy.

Our study opens with a look at Civil War between Rehoboam and Judah vs. Jeroboam and Israel (931-910 BC). 1 Kings 12:1 We read that Rehoboam went to Shechem, “for all Israel had gone there to make him king.” Shechem was an historic site for the nation from about 500 years early when Levitical priests recited the blessings and the curses from Mount Ebal and Mount Gerizim. Shechem is the city near these two mountains.  In verses 3 and 4 we read that Jeroboam challenges Rehoboam. Reheboam goes to 2 advisory boards. One was the elders that had served under his father, Solomon.  They gave him wise direction. 1 Kings 12:7 - they said that if you serve the people and give them a favorable answer, they will always be your servants. (Wise advise - to be a servant leader. It is also a prophetic view of who Jesus would be - Jesus is our Servant King - our suffering servant) The second group of advisors was Rehoboam's young friends. 1 Kings 12:13-14 says they tell him to be tougher with the people. Reheboam decided to take the advise of his young friends, but when he tells the people he will be even tougher on them than his father was, the result is that the Israelites - the entire northern part of the kingdom rebels against Reheboam and he had to escape to Jerusalem.  Will there be civil war or will there be an uneasy peace? We read in 1 Kings 12:21 that when Rehoboam arrives in Jerusalem, he gathers Judah together and the tribe of Benjamin to go to war against Jeroboam and the rest of Israel so that he can regain the entire kingdom of his father Solomon. But then God intercedes giving a word to Shemaiah a man of God: 1 Kings 12:23-24 “Say to Rehoboam son of Solomon king of Judah, to all Judah and Benjamin, and to the rest of the people, ‘This is what the Lord says: Do not go up to fight against your brothers, the Israelites. Go home, every one of you, for this is my doing.'” So they obeyed the word of the Lord and went home again, as the Lord had ordered.” Reheboam listens to the words from the prophet Shemaiah and there is an uneasy peace established between the splintered nation. However, we read in verses 26-27 that Jeroboam's response to the peace was fear that his people - the northern part of the kingdom - would again give their allegiance to Reheboam King of Judah, Solomon's son.  So Jeroboam has two golden calves made - one is put in the northern part of his kingdom and the other calf is placed in the southern part of Israel and he tells the people that it's too much to go up to Jerusalem to worship, so here instead are your gods. And the people did worship these golden calves and it says in 1 Kings 12:29-30 that it became a sin. And the nation begins to turn away from God. Jeroboam led them astray and did not do as God had requested of him when he was given the prophetic word of his kingship over Israel.  Pastor shares the archeological discovery of the Altar of Dan where one of the golden calves had been set up. A sad testimony to how the nation was led astray and away from God. We learn the importance of following God and listening to His voice. Now What? In today's episode, host Hunter guides us on our continuing journey through Scripture, marking the 256th day of the year. We delve into powerful stories and reflections from Daniel chapters 3 and 4, Psalm 81, and Revelation 17. Hunter begins by highlighting the dramatic tale of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, their unwavering faith in the face of Nebuchadnezzar's golden statue, and the lessons we can draw about resisting the “cult of self” in our own lives. As we listen to God's Word together, Hunter offers thoughtful insights on humility, hope, and the servant-hearted way of Jesus, reminding us that even amidst the fiery trials of life, God walks with us. The episode closes with heartfelt prayers and encouragement to cultivate hope and gratitude within community, looking forward to another day of walking together in faith. Whether you're new to Daily Radio Bible or a long-time listener, today's episode promises inspiration, comfort, and the reminder that, no matter what you're facing, you are loved and there is always hope. TODAY'S DEVOTION: Recognize the destructive life of the cult of self. King Nebuchadnezzar was the poster child for a life centered on the self—a man who built a 90-foot tall statue of gold as a monument to his own greatness and demanded all people bow down and worship an image of himself. That, friends, is the path of the self: it wants life to revolve around our own projects, desires, ambitions, and reputation. If it's not about us, it'll find another narcissist to orbit. So often, even religion gets caught up in the frenzy, enforcing the lie that life is found in worshiping anything but God—the living God who serves. But there is another way—Jesus, the servant King, shows us a life radically different from Nebuchadnezzar's. Jesus is self-giving, radically forgiving, and co-suffering in His love for all, even for those who set themselves against Him. When we awaken to Jesus, the living word, we do not escape the fiery trials and pressures of this world. But we are promised that we will never be alone in those flames. Just as God stood with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the fire, so He stands with us. In the end, we emerge from those flames into life—His life. The call today is to refuse to shape your life as a monument to self. Don't bow down to the cult of self or any idols that demand your allegiance. Instead, open your heart to the way of Jesus: the way of humility, service, and forgiveness. Participate in His self-giving, radically forgiving, co-suffering love. That is the way that brings true freedom and hope—hope that can't be destroyed by the fires of this world. That's a prayer I have for my own soul. That's a prayer I have for my family, for my wife, for my daughters, for my son. And that is a prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord of heaven and earth, you have awakened us in your mercy once more. Still our anxious minds, quiet our striving hearts and help us to rest in the knowledge that we are held by you. May we walk in step with your Spirit today, not ahead, not behind, but beside you in trust and love through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. O God of all peoples, you formed every soul in your image and breathed life into every heart. Open the eyes of the nations, soften hearts grown cold and teach us to live as neighbors and friends. Let your Spirit move in power. Renew the face of the earth and usher in your reign of peace. Amen. And now, Lord, let me be a bearer of your peace. Where voices divide, let me speak grace. Where fear takes root, let me plant trust. Where the world rushes on, let me walk with you. May I seek not to climb, but to kneel, not to win, but to love, not to grasp, but to give. For it is in emptying that we are filled, in surrender that we are strengthened, and in union with you that we find our truest joy. Amen. And now, as our Lord has taught us, we are bold to pray: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.   OUR WEBSITE: www.dailyradiobible.com We are reading through the New Living Translation.   Leave us a voicemail HERE: https://www.speakpipe.com/dailyradiobible Subscribe to us at YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@Dailyradiobible/featured OTHER PODCASTS: Listen with Apple Podcast DAILY BIBLE FOR KIDS DAILY PSALMS DAILY PROVERBS DAILY LECTIONARY DAILY CHRONOLOGICAL

God exalted him to the highest place . . . that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow . . . and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord. . . . — Philippians 2:9-11 When I was a pastor, one of the churches I served celebrated Ascension Day with a midweek worship service. That meant extra preparation work for me, and I admit that sometimes I resented having to do that extra work. One year, in front of a small crowd on a Thursday evening, I delivered a hastily produced sermon. And after the worship service, a young man who had been visiting our church asked if he could meet with me. So we did. He told me that in that service, he had encountered God like never before. In an instant, the Christian story had made sense to him. He was now a believer in Christ! Through that simple, unassuming worship service and my unimpressive words, the Holy Spirit brought him to a deep awareness of what it means to be in relationship with Jesus, the Servant-King. I was deeply humbled, knowing that my attitude had not been the best going into that service. This experience gave me new insight into the message of Philippians 2. I am often humbled because of my failures and shortcomings. But Jesus, who intentionally humbled himself for the sake of the world, continues to work among us despite ourselves. He will keep changing lives until that day when every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that he is Lord. Jesus, thank you for always working through us, despite our failures and weaknesses. We worship you as our Savior and exalt you as our ascended Lord. Amen.

The Servant King by Josh Head Matthew 12:15-21 (NASB1995) (all the rest are ESV) Matthew 3:16-17 Matthew 12:14 Matthew 12:15-16 “There is an admirable conjunction of diverse excellencies in Jesus Christ. There is in Him a conjunction of such diverse excellencies that would have seemed to us utterly incompatible in the same subject. There do meet in Jesus Christ infinite highness and infinite humility. He is higher than all the kings of the earth for He is the King of kings and Lord of lords so great is he that all the kings and princes of the earth are as worms in the dust before him. So great is he that all the nations are a drop in the bucket. He is infinitely above any need of us, so we cannot be of any profit to him. And yet, he is one of infinite humility. None are so low or inferior, but Christ is willing not only to take notice of them, but to enter into friendship with them, yes indeed to unite his soul with them in spiritual marriage, to take our nature upon himself to become one OF us so he can become one WITH us. He is great enough to become low for us, to expose himself to shame and spitting and death. Such a conjunction of infinite highness and infinite humility in the same person seems impossible, and therefore, is altogether beautiful.” – Jonathan Edwards   Matthew 12:17 Isaiah 1:15 Matthew 12:18   We believe in one God,     the Father, the Almighty,     maker of heaven and earth,     of all that is, seen and unseen.   We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,     the only Son of God,     eternally begotten of the Father,     God from God, Light from Light,     true God from true God,     begotten, not made,     of one Being with the Father.     Through him all things were made.     For us and for our salvation         he came down from heaven:     by the power of the Holy Spirit         he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,         and was made man.     For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;         he suffered death and was buried.         On the third day he rose again             in accordance with the Scriptures;         he ascended into heaven             and is seated at the right hand of the Father.     He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,         and his kingdom will have no end.   We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,     who proceeds from the Father and the Son.     With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.     He has spoken through the Prophets.     We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.     We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.     We look for the resurrection of the dead,         and the life of the world to come.   Matthew 12:19 Matthew 12:20 Matthew 12:21 John 13:12-16 “The cross is unrepeatable but cross bearing is not.” – Eugene Peterson Ephesians 5:25 John 15:15 “He will proclaim justice to the Gentiles.” “He will not quarrel” “He will not cry out” “Nor will anyone hear his voice in the streets.” “A bruised reed he will not break.” “A smoldering wick he will not quench.”

Hope with God... with Andrew and Wendy Palau

What encourages you? Take a minute to think about it. Is it a raise at work, money in your bank account, your children's success, or a particular relationship? There are so many amazing things in life that encourage us. The hard truth is that these things come and go. Money is spent, our children are imperfect, people hurt us. In the Bible, the apostle Paul writes of the deepest type of encouragement possible: we can be united with Christ—with Jesus. In relationship with the God of the universe through Jesus. He is the Servant King who came and gave His life to carry the pain, the sin, and suffering of the world. This is a great mystery, and this is the greatest encouragement. Always remember, there is hope with God. "Is there any encouragement from belonging to Christ? Any comfort from his love? Any fellowship together in the Spirit? Are your hearts tender and compassionate?" Philippians 2:1 radio.hopewithgod.com

Key Chapters in the Bible
6/21 Isaiah 53* - The Suffering Servant-King

Key Chapters in the Bible

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 21, 2025 12:29

Isaiah 53 is one of the most important chapters in the entire Bible! This astounding passage prophesizes the death of Christ 700 years before He even lived! This amazing chapter shows how the King would die on behalf of His people so that they (and us) might be part of His eternal kingdom. Join us as we study this key chapter in God's Word! DISCUSSION AND STUDY QUESTIONS: 1.    Isaiah 53 is one of the most important and well-known chapters in the entire Old Testament. Prior to this study, what is your familiarity with this chapter and why would you have said it was so important for Christians to know and understand?  2.    The podcast mentioned that background leading up to this chapter included the unfolding promise of the New Covenant that would be made with and through the Servant. This covenant will be a NEW covenant (Is 42 & 49) where God's people will enter a NEW Kingdom (Isaiah 2 & 25) with a NEW King (Isaiah 7, 9, 11, et.al.) as the NEW Israel (Isaiah 49:3). Why is this background vital to understanding the profound depth of Isaiah 53 and the offering of the Suffering Servant King for our sins?  3.    The podcast mentioned that there were three “servants” mentioned in the Book of Isaiah. Who were they? Which servant is being spoken of here in Isaiah 53?  4.    How is the Messiah-Servant-King described in verses 2 and 3? Why would this be a surprise to God's people? Would you have difficulty believing in a Messianic King who looked like this?  5.    What happens to the Messiah-King in verses 5, 7 and 9? How does verses 6 and 8 explain why He would experience such suffering?  6.    According to verse 10, who was the ultimate source of the suffering of the Servant? Why is that important for us to know?  7.    Verse 10 also says that the Suffering Servant would offer Himself as a “guilt offering”. The podcast mentioned that the guilt offering was taught in Levititus where the person paid 1/5 more in restitution for the damages of their sin. Think about our sin before God; we have an infinite debt before God, what is 1/5 of infinity? Why is our debt to God literally impossible to repay? Why did we need an eternal king to pay our eternal debt, plus 1/5, for us?  8.    According to verse 11, how did the Father view the guilt offering of the Suffering Servant? Who will be justified by this offering? What does it even mean to be justified? What does it mean for YOU to be justified?  9.    When did you first look to Jesus as your guilt offering payment to God? How has that realization impacted your relationship with God, the world and His work in your life?  10.    If a person will not trust in Jesus' guilt offering payment for their sins, what is the reality of their relationship with God now and for eternity?  Check out our Bible Study Guide on the Key Chapters of Genesis! The "Spiritual Economy" is built on "the last shall be first, and the first shall be last." It is not top-down but bottom-up. It is built on those who "condescend" to lift others, not the world's power structure. For men, it is being the "Servant King." The love of God is not just feelings but opportunity. God did not die so that you would feel better about being loved. He died to allow you to become like Him, grow, put on the character of God, and be a joint heir with Christ. April 13, 2025Jesus is uniquely different from all of us. This is something we can universally agree on but when it comes to even how we understand concepts or culture it becomes even more apparent of just how unique and different he really is. Think about the idea of bringing justice to a circumstance, we typically think of a courtroom setting with lawyers, judges, bailiffs, and those accused. Justice is served via a gavel, arguments, opinions being heard, personalities taking shape. Yet, justice in the kingdom is done so by a servant who doesn't raise his voice but instead serves the accused. Justice in the kingdom is accomplished no matter what the circumstances are because the servant doesn't grow tired or weary. The greatest part of the servant is bringing justice to the weak is also the King of this kingdom. In a society where pomp and circumstance is given to the elite, the one who is actually elite among us chose to serve us so that we could enjoy him and his kingdom forever.Isaiah 42:1-9

Embark on this year-long voyage through the Bible, and let each day's passage uplift and inspire you. TODAY'S EPISODE: Welcome to the Daily Radio Bible podcast! In today's episode, we're journeying through day 61 of our exploration of the scriptures, guided by our guest Heather. Together, we delve into Numbers chapters 30 and 31 and finish with Mark 9. Heather invites us to gather with people from around the globe as we seek to truly see Jesus through the scriptures, drawing our hearts towards Christ and warming ourselves around the fire of God's love. Today, we'll explore themes of vows and pledges, battles and plunder in the book of Numbers, and witness the powerful acts of Jesus in the gospel of Mark, where he teaches on faith, service, and the transformative power of humble surrender. Join us as we reflect, pray, and seek God's purpose together. Let's jump in and be reminded that in a world of seeming winners and losers, it's through humble servitude and God's immeasurable grace that we find true greatness and new life. Let's dive into today's readings and be encouraged in our walk with Christ. Remember, you are loved. TODAY'S DEVOTION: Jesus shows us what true greatness is. In a world that is so often obsessed with power, success, and status, Jesus offers us a radically different vision of what it means to be great. His words in the gospel of Mark reveal that the path to greatness lies not in ascending the ladder of power or outshining others, but rather in serving them. Whoever wants to be first must take last place and be the servant of everyone else. Imagine that! In God's kingdom, the measure of greatness is not about how high you can rise above others but how deeply you can serve them. What would happen if this profound truth took root in our hearts? What if, instead of striving to be the best in the eyes of the world, we joyfully embraced the call to be servants to all? Our actions, driven by humility and love, would display the very heart of the kingdom of God. It requires us to lay down our own claims to status and to give ourselves in love for the good of others. Just as a small seed must be buried in the ground to grow into a fruitful plant, we too must surrender our lives, allowing God to resurrect them into something beautiful and whole. Through surrender, we are raised to new life, lives filled with meaning and purpose, reflecting the greatness of our Servant King. In a world where the loudest often gain attention, let our lives speak loudly of the quiet strength found in serving, loving, and giving. This is my prayer for myself, and for you—to embrace a greatness that serves, that loves lavishly, filling the world with the beauty and grace of God. Let us walk in the path of true greatness that Jesus has laid before us. May we be servants on this journey, spreading the reality of His kingdom wherever we go. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose  through Jesus Christ Our Lord amen.   Oh God you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed son to preach peace to those who are far and those who are near. Grant that people everywhere may seek after you, and find you. Bring the nations into your fold, pour out your Spirit on all flesh, and hasten the coming of your kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.   And now Lord,  make me an instrument of your peace.  Where there is hatred let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon.  Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope.  Where there is darkness, light.  And where there is sadness,  Joy.  Oh Lord grant that I might not seek to be consoled as to console. To be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love.  For it is in the giving that we receive, in the pardoning that we are pardoned, it is in the dying that we are born unto eternal life.  Amen And now as our Lord has taught us we are bold to pray... Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven, give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our tresspasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not unto temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. Loving God, we give you thanks for restoring us in your image. And nourishing us with spiritual food, now send us forth as forgiven people, healed and renewed, that we may proclaim your love to the world, and continue in the risen life of Christ.
