Sharp Park in Pacifica was the site of a prison camp during World War II, where residents deemed "highly dangerous" were sent. It's lesser-known than the larger Northern California camps, like Tanforan or Tule Lake. In this episode, we learn what is known about this camp, and get to know some of the people who passed through its gates. Additional Reading: Pacifica's WWII Prison Camp Has Been Largely Erased, But It Was There The Little-Known History of Japanese Internment on Angel Island Reported by Adhiti Bandlamudi. Bay Curious is made by Olivia Allen-Price, Katrina Schwartz, Sebastian Miño-Bucheli and Brendan Willard. Welcome back! The guys have a special edition of course reviews focusing on all the great public golf in San Francisco. Many people wouldn't think of San Francisco having some of the best public (and private) courses in the US, but it has an incredible amount to offer for all skill levels. With more than 7 total courses within an 8 mile radius, golf heads should remember to bring their sticks when visiting The City by the bay. Courses include TPC Harding Park, Sharp Park, Lincoln Park, and Presidio. How many MacKenzies will each course get? Will Ryan flip flop on his ratings? Tune in to find out!
The one and only Mary Bier talks about the different hats she wears (Councilmember, Facilitator, Director, etc.) within the community, shares updates about the expansion of her substance use prevention work through the Daly City Youth Health Center (that serves all youth in North County including Pacifica!) and answers questions from community members about the police budget, Sharp Park specific plan and many other issues facing Pacifica.
We live in an era of renewed appreciation for the golf course architecture that came before us. For the past decade some of the greatest golf courses in the world have undergone restoration projects to bring back the original intentions of the their architects. On Episode 21 of TalkinGolf History we focus on one project - a course that was designed by the man many consider to be the greatest golf course architect of all-time; Dr. Alister MacKenzie and his gift to the average golfer, an everyman's course, his only public course that sits on the sea...Sharp Park. Bo Links joins the podcast to share the history of Sharp Park, how he and others saved it, and their efforts to restore it for future generations.
I am joined with golf course architect Jay Blasi. Jay and I discuss the future of golf course design, technology, Sharp Park, the reaction to Chambers Bay and much more. Listen and subscribe to the podcast on iTunes and Stitcher.
On this edition of Next on the Tee my guests are: 2013 Senior Open Champion Mark Wiebe, Golf Course Architect Jay Blasi and the Voice of Golf Peter Kessler. I'll chat with Mark about his victory in the 2013 Senior Open Championship which took place at Royal Birkdale the site of last week's Open Championship. He beat Bernhard Langer on the 5th playoff hole. We'll talk about that, Bernhard Langer's dominance on the Champions Tour, does he believe Langer should change his putting style to squelch any notion that he's still anchoring, and his thoughts about this year's Open Championship and what we saw from Jordan Spieth and Matt Kuchar at Birkdale. Jay Blasi - Jay is an up and coming golf course architect. He was a part of the Robert Trent Jones Jr. team that designed Chambers Bay. We'll look back on the 2015 US Open and get this thoughts on what the player's feedback was about that event. We'll also look at his current project, restoring Sharp Park in San Francisco, an Alister MacKenzie design. Peter Kessler - I'll get Peter's thoughts on the Open Championship and where Jordan Spieth's comeback over the last few holes ranks among turnarounds to win a major. Also, did Spieth seal his place in the World Golf Hall of Fame before he turned 24?
Bo Links is the co-founder of the San Francisco Public Golf Alliance. Bo and his colleague Richard Harris founded the San Francisco Public Golf Alliance to protect public golf in San Francisco, and for the past 10 years, they have been leading the fight to keep Sharp Park Golf Course open, despite efforts from various environmental groups to close the seaside links. Sharp Park was designed in 1932 by Alister MacKenzie, and at one time was labeled "The poor man's Cypress Point." Bo has been playing Sharp Park since the 1960's and is one of the course's greatest historians. After a 10+ year long legal battle, Sharp Park was designated as a “Historic Resource Property” under the California Environmental Quality Act, and now the SFPGA's next mission is to restore as much of the original Alister MacKenzie design as possible. Bo and host Kyle Surlow discuss what the journey has been like up to this point, and what will happen to Sharp Park going forward. You can join the San Francisco Golf Alliance by clicking here, and you can also find them on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. This episode is proudly presented by GOLFGUIDE.NET
