Revealing The Process and Inspiration Behind Designing TGL Golf Holes - with Agustín Pizá / Pizá Golf

When our host Colin Weston attended a TGL match (Tiger's Jupiter Links vs Rory's Boston Common) he quickly learned that several of the compelling holes played out on a 60' high simulator video screen and 360º rotating, undulating green are designed by previous guest Agustin Pizá, who is the creative force behind Pizá Golf Design. First appearing on The ModGolf Podcast back in November 2021, Augie rejoins us to pull back the curtain on his design inspiration as he walks us through six of the fun and challenging holes he and his Pizá Golf team created for TGL. https://media24.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads-2024/images/1/1ea879c1-a4a2-4e10-bea4-e5d8368a3c7a/EsxnmWH4.jpg Are you a watcher more than a listener? Then you can watch our video with Augie on The ModGolf YouTube channel (https://youtu.be/RUDZqWY3U9U) as he walks us through his inspiration and process on six TGL hole designs. Click on this link (https://youtu.be/RUDZqWY3U9U) or the image below as Colin and Augie discuss how their mutual backgrounds in architectural design influence their creativity in the golf space. https://media24.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads-2024/images/1/1ea879c1-a4a2-4e10-bea4-e5d8368a3c7a/2XsdxxE3.jpg (https://youtu.be/RUDZqWY3U9U) Here are images of all six holes that Augie shares with us for you to take in while listening to the podcast: The Plank Teams will need to walk “The Plank” as they navigate this uphill hole with tricky diagonal bunkering. For this short 380-yard par 4, it could be tempting for teams to go for the driver, but 3 pot bunkers narrow the landing area adding risk to the aggressive play. Agustín says: "For The Plank, we wanted to design something simple but also something that required you to think through your shots. To achieve this, we positioned the bunkers to create several dynamic diagonal lines across the hole." "When you stand on the tee box, that positioning gives you the sensation of, ‘Oh, it's full of bunkers, there's nowhere to land my ball!' But obviously that's not the case, you have several landing areas and platforms to access. The Plank is designed to be a drivable par-4, depending on the wind, but the strategy will change if it's a crosswind versus wind at the players' backs. If less than a driver is chosen off the tee, a well-placed tee shot still leaves a short approach and great chance at birdie." https://media24.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads-2024/images/1/1ea879c1-a4a2-4e10-bea4-e5d8368a3c7a/zErM0GXO.png Pick Yer Plunder Set in Bounty Bay, this hole is the ultimate match play par 5. From the gold tee, players are faced with three options. The riskiest, and by far most rewarding choice, is going straight over the guardian bunker to a 27-yard-wide fairway, requiring a 300-yard carry. Choosing the right option, the fairway is just 37-yards-wide and requires a 285-yard carry. With a solid drive, players will be left with less than 250 yards remaining. The safest play is to the left, where the fairway is 70 yards wide. But the further left you miss it, the more blind and long your second shot will be. Agustín says: "A 590 yard par 5. The hole idea is you can take that middle section and you will be rewarded. You will only have a 200 yard shot to the GreenZone to get on in two. The alternative is to play the right arm or the left arm. You will have to play the second shot on a high cliff or a low cliff. This hole not only plays with your psyche on ways of playing it, but also where you land could create some blind shots and some other challenges that you probably were not expecting." https://media24.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads-2024/images/1/1ea879c1-a4a2-4e10-bea4-e5d8368a3c7a/_r20cPOY.png On The Rocks This stunning downhill par 3 hangs off the edge of a cliff in the North Sea of Scotland. The green sits on a 41-yard-wide island that replicates the exact same-sized turntable in TGL's GreenZone at SoFi Center. Players will be tempted to be aggressive, most will likely have a short iron in hand, but any slight misjudgment and a team may quickly find themselves On The Rocks. Agustín says: "This is one of the last designs that we created, it's a par 3 that sits right on the cliffs. What we did very special here, is we took the GreenZone and just erased everything, all the surroundings, and kept the turntable. We have five distinct tee boxes. The first two tees are right in the center and they are somwhere between 100 yards and 130 yards. On the sides, the tee boxes spread out to ask for a fade or for a draw. If you go towards the furthest one out, it'll ask for a draw and it's 180 yards out." https://media24.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads-2024/images/1/1ea879c1-a4a2-4e10-bea4-e5d8368a3c7a/Mtgou8fv.png Sidewinder A high trajectory right-to-left tee shot will reward teams with Position A on this reachable Par 5, while bunkers dot the approach to the green, which sits beyond a small ravine. While the design is similar to Serpent, the penalty areas have been minimized with the intention for Sidewinder to have a bit less bite. Agustín says: "You can take the conservative route on the right and if you hit over 290 to 310 yards you will get that speed slope onto position A. If you try to clear the left side and be more aggressive you will get rewarded even more. If you cannot get home in two then you will have to find a very good strategy to attack the GreenZone. You have to choose whether you want to lay your ball on the left or the right and that will be dictated by where the flag is played." https://media24.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads-2024/images/1/1ea879c1-a4a2-4e10-bea4-e5d8368a3c7a/7drFnnF4.png The Spear A close relative of Temple, teams will face a simple risk vs. reward choice when teeing off on The Spear. The design places a pinch point right around the PGA TOUR average carry and gives players a choice to either hit a long and straight tee shot past the pinch point, or lay up short and play to the green in three. Teams that hit the ball short of the pinch will have plenty of room to lay up as they progress towards the green. Players that are able to execute the risky drive and land safely are then rewarded with a green light to go for the floating GreenZone in two. Agustín says: "The Spear is a full par 5. Architecture at the end is about playing with form and we started to create this hole by playing with triangles and we came up with The Spear. It pinches away on the fairway at approximately 300 yards, give or take. That's where it's going to make players think, with a crosswind likely a key factor in play, too. The strategy is right there in your face. It's a heroic hole. Do you want to lay up to guarantee a three shot hole or do you want to try to clear it and take that risk as it opens up in a very generous way? You'll have a very good chance of getting home in two if you clear the pinch successfully." https://media24.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads-2024/images/1/1ea879c1-a4a2-4e10-bea4-e5d8368a3c7a/e7864_kR.png Temple is a hole design inspired by ancient civilizations and based on simplicity, the art form of two triangles facing each other to create a unique risk vs. reward with its hourglass shape. The choice off the tee is whether to carry the narrow intersection where the opposing triangles meet, or to lay up short and run the risk of a 240-yard or longer shot into the green. From the tee box, the fairway reaches its narrowest point at 285 yards before it widens again. The entire hole is surrounded by penalty areas and wind will be a factor within the virtual setting, complicating the decision for teams. Agustín says: "Temple is a par 4 playing over 500 yards that we found in the mountains of South America. This is a very special design because it plays with simplicity. With just two forms - two triangles pinched in the center - it can give us so much excitement and strategy, and we have placed the green in a position to reward the most aggressive shots off the tee." https://media24.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads-2024/images/1/1ea879c1-a4a2-4e10-bea4-e5d8368a3c7a/OQzAsQ_5.png Want to connect with Augie? What will a typical golf course look like in 2050? Will 7,200 yard long layouts with deep green fairways and rough be a thing of the past due to water shortages and heat waves? Will golf properties be "off the grid" energy self sufficient by incorporating on-site renewable energy sources such solar power to achieve their sustainability goals? To open Season 16, host Colin Weston and guest Petra Himmel explore the spectrum of sustainability issues surrounding the golf industry, from plastic use in golf balls to the environmental and social benefits of urban golf courses. https://media24.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads-2024/images/1/1ea879c1-a4a2-4e10-bea4-e5d8368a3c7a/S7bgqRSJ.jpg (https://www.youtube.com/@modgolfpodcast/videos) "You really have to believe in the future otherwise you could give up at once. We currently have all these erosion, flood, wildfires and heat wave stories that are impacting golf clubs. Climate change doesn't really care if we care or not. It's just there. We just have one chance to get it right, so we either react in time or we will struggle. There are so many experts predicting that you either start preparing for it or you just don't have a chance to survive economically as a golf club. If you are in the wrong region or if you aren't prepared, then you will not make it. The good thing is that we have possibilities and solutions."... 006 | Adapting to Change in Golf: Insights with David Delsandro and Jeff Corcoran

Leadership on the Links

From young golf enthusiasts to industry leaders overseeing iconic venues, Jeff Corcoran and Dave Delsandro share their journey of passion, growth, and adaptation in the golf industry. Discover their evolution from demanding superintendents to understanding leaders, the challenges of labor shortages, and their new roles as advisors, providing invaluable insights and expertise to the next generation of golf course superintendents  Corcoran has been a golf course superintendent for more than 20 years. He landed his first head superintendent job at The Weston Golf Club, outside of Boston, and he has been the director of agronomy at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, New York, since 2003. During his tenure at Oak Hill, he hosted two PGA Championships and two Senior PGA Championships. In 2019, Corcoran worked in conjunction with architect Andrew Green to renovate Oak Hill's East Course. Corcoran has been responsible for placing 10 assistant superintendents into superintendent roles. Delsandro's career in the turf industry has spanned 25 years, most recently as the superintendent at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania. His experiences include all types of conventional golf course construction projects, as well as large-scale site development, earth moving, utility relocation/installation, and building construction. He has worked with several leading golf architectural firms, including Fazio Design, Coore & Crenshaw, and Hanse Golf Design. Delsandro has successfully prepared for, hosted, and restored venues for four national championships, including two U.S. Opens. They partnered last year to form Agronomic Advisors, a consulting company focused on providing a diverse, comprehensive suite of solutions to the golf course industry. In this episode, Delsandro and Corcoran look back fondly on the golf course as their babysitter, share the lessons they learned as leaders at premier venues, and advise today's superintendents on leadership approaches in a changing industry. Your Club Selection Changes with Age, so Should Your Leadership Approach Most of us need to adjust our club selection as we age in order to hit the ball as far as we once did. The clubs we grabbed as teens, such as the self-described junkies Delsandro and Corcoran once were, won't make the cut after we make the turn in the game of life. Neither will the same approach to managing a department in a golf club nor leading a large capital project. Know when and how to adapt. “When you're younger, and you're trying to prove yourself at this particular level, as a superintendent, your bandwidth for people that fall outside of those realms that you that you live in is pretty narrow,” Corcoran said. “I remember telling guys, ‘You don't want to work till 7 o'clock tonight on Friday? You're not dedicated enough. You've only worked 21 days in a row and you want a day off? You're not dedicated enough.' “That sounds awful now.” Recognize that it takes all kinds of individuals to build a team and have a culture of success. Labor Market Management The labor market in the industry has changed significantly in recent years, and that's not just a problem for superintendents at local community golf venues. Leaders at the premier clubs face the same challenges, particularly when weighed against the facts that member expectations are not changing, nor are members willing to pay more for a stagnant experience. Talk about shifting winds. “The light-bulb moment for me was… I can either expect the labor market to change to meet the needs of one corporation or the upper echelon of one industry, or duh, realistically, we have to change to meet the labor market,” Delsandro said. Get as many outside perspectives, including those from outside the golf industry, as possible, and see what makes sense to apply as you manage a team at your course. Enjoy this episode of Leadership on the Links with David Delsandro and Jeff Corcoran! Soundbytes 17:15-17:46 “In this industry, as a professional, it started to become very apparent to me that everybody defined success differently. And from a leadership standpoint, the one good thing about working at a premium club in our business, or towards the upper echelon of any industry, is that typically, if you do it right, you're going to find transferable skills. Whether that's communication, professionalism, work ethic, or management skills.” —David Delsandro 34:42-35:25 “You see this whole dynamic of wages rising and operational pressure. Then you're talking about dues increases at a membership level and inflationary wage increases far exceeding operational increases. You know what I mean? There's this whole dynamic that starts crashing down. And at some point, it's going to break, right? So you do need to be creative. But on a macro level, it's gonna get to the point where there's a threshold. And there's some vast changes within industry that I think that are upcoming in the next five to eight years.” —Jeff Corcoran Quotes “The golf course was like my babysitter for the most part. My parents had to work. They just dropped me off, went to work, and they'd pick me up when it got dark out.” —Jeff Corcoran “I started working at the local public golf course when I was 15 just to get free golf. I thought I was going to work in the pro shop. I showed up on my first day with pressed khakis and a Sears, three-button Polo shirt, but at 9 a.m. I had some 60-year-old guy holding my ankles hanging over an irrigation ditch, covered in mud.” —David Delsandro “The labor market is such that there aren't as many individuals that are as motivated as there [used to be], if I'm being very open and honest about that.” —Jeff Corcoran “You soon learn that you don't know everything, and you need some help. You need people to see some stuff outside of the box and bring in consultants or industry professionals.” —Jeff Corcoran “There comes a point — and we've all been there, whether it's your first intendent's job or a new superintendent job at a different venue — that there's the realization that happens when you're like, ‘OK, I'm the guy now. Every decision that I make has consequences.' And it's more that you're not trying to succeed, you're just trying not to fail.” —David Delsandro “We've found that helping a new superintendent or a superintendent at a new venue has been some of the most rewarding work that we've done, because we're able to serve the person who we used to be; to help them succeed by avoiding mistakes that we made.” —David Delsandro Links Mentioned in This Episode: Tyler Bloom Consulting: https://tylerbloomconsulting.com/ Agronomic Advisors: https://agro-advisors.com/ Connect with David on LinkedIn:  https://www.linkedin.com/in/david-delsandro-5071692a6/ Connect with Jeff on LinkedIn:  https://www.linkedin.com/in/jeff-corcoran-5681092a6/ Follow Agronomic Advisors on X: https://x.com/agro_advisors23

After designing golf courses for 25 years, Jim Nagle knows what club executives should look for when they search for an architect to plan their course renovation.  Nagle grew up wanting to be the next Bob Vila, but when the golf bug bit him, he traded home improvement for course improvement. Nagle combined his natural design talent, a landscape architecture degree from West Virginia University, and his newfound passion for the game into a life's work. He benefited from influential internships and summer jobs while in college, learning from architects like Pete Dye, Perry Dye, and Don Placek. He went on to spend most of his professional career as a golf course architect with Ron Forse and Forse Golf Design, Inc., specializing in the restoration and renovation of classic and modern golf courses. Nagle started his own business, Nagle Design Works, on March 1, 2024. His course redesign projects include Lancaster Country Club in central Pennsylvania, site of the recently completed U.S. Women's Open. In this episode, Nagle shares his story and lessons learned from a lifetime of work in the golf course industry. How to Evaluate Architects for Your Golf Course Project Golf courses, resorts, and related businesses benefited from the surge in engagement and golf activity from COVID-19, helping to offset some of the financial challenges posed by the pandemic, and also breathing new life into many facilities with capital improvements. Often members don't know exactly what the course needs, nor do they know who to hire. Nagel offered his top two traits an architect or designer should demonstrate before you sign him or her to a contract. Listening skills rank at the top. The applicant has to understand what the hot-button issues are and what the timeline is, and then help you develop a written plan of action.  Recall is not far behind. Nagel puts stock in being able “to walk a golf course, sit down four hours later, and rattle off all the distinct features of that course.” People, Not Pars Nagle was never very good at playing golf, but he's had a passion for the game and its people since he was a teenager.  As a designer or architect, you must be able to develop relationships with club leaders and members alike. It's rare to simply be handed the keys to a course overhaul, so engaging with the club community early in a project sets you up for success, like a nice drive down the middle of the fairway. Enjoy this episode of Leadership on the Links with Jim Nagle! Quotes “When I was a kid, I wanted to be the next Bob Vila.” “When we take that step into the unknown, in the back of your mind, it's like, is this going to work? Is this going to work? And I saw pretty quickly that I think it's going to work.” “Our industry is evolving, where now we're starting to see those courses built in the ‘50s, ‘60s, and ‘70s starting to get facelifts, but also starting to get some significant rebuilds.” “If there's anything our industry is, it's relationship-based. And it is so small that it will take you within a minute to find some sort of connection with the person you're sitting next to, talking to.” “They talk a lot about the community and what this U.S. Women's Open means to that community. To be a part of that, although a very small part of that, there's this community-wide success and enjoyment for this event.” Links Mentioned in This Episode: Tyler Bloom Consulting: https://tylerbloomconsulting.com/ Nagle Design Works: https://www.nagledesignworks.com/ Connect with Jim on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jim-nagle-asgca-31031414/ U.S. Women's Open at Lancaster Country Club (Photo Tour): https://www.uswomensopen.com/2024/galleries/course-tour-of-lancaster-country-club.html

The stars finally aligned recently in providing me with an opportunity to spend some time with Angela Moser - golf course architect, shaper and world traveller! There was no sign of either a dozer or a digger.... although I am absolutely sure that one of those is undoubtedly in her immediate future. In this episode we take a deep dive on Renaissance's only current Irish course, St Patricks Links @ The Rosapenna Golf Resort, where Angela, Tom Doak, Eric Iverson, Clyde Johnson, Brian Schneider, Brian Slawnik, Blake Conant, Don Placek & Co. have created what in all likelihood will probably be the last great links to be built in Ireland. We take a look Angela's back story in golf, which started by chance when her parents enrolled her in a three day golf summer camp for kids in her home town of Augsburg, Germany. The golf bug bit, ultimately leading her towards a degree in Landscape Architecture at the Munich Univeristy of Applied Sciences, followed by a year long Erasmus scholarship in Sheffield. This UK sojourn, afforded Angela both the encouragement and opportunity to immerse herself in disciphering the myriad puzzles that many of the great UK courses afford golfers. After graduation, Angela worked in Greenkeeping and Golf Course Design in Germany and Austria. An internship with Renaissance Golf Design would follow in 2011 and the rest as they say is history. We take a look at some of this history, while also looking at a few of the upcoming projects that are on the drawing board and one that our interview subject might be inclined to put there, should the opportunity every arise. Many thanks to Angela for graciously affording me the time to speak with her. We both very much hope you enjoy our chat. If you want to find out more about The Olde Glen Bar, Glen Village, Co.
