Give Nutrition Advice Without Making Patients Feel Punished Have you ever asked, “Do you have any other questions?” at the end of a visit and immediately regretted it?Same.Because of course they have more questions. Important questions. Questions that probably should have been asked 15 minutes ago, except now you're already behind, the next patient is waiting, and you're trying to be compassionate without completely derailing the visit. In this episode, I'm talking with Maya Feller, MS, RD, CDN, registered dietitian, author of Eating From Our Roots, and founder of Maya Feller Nutrition, about the art of inviting patients into treatment instead of simply telling them what to do.We talk about cultural humility, implicit bias, why foods like rice, tortillas, noodles, plantains, and traditional starches get unfairly blamed for chronic disease, and how clinicians can help patients improve blood sugar, blood pressure, and lipids without stripping away the foods that feel like home. Maya also shares a brilliant framework for setting the agenda with patients, asking permission, and keeping the visit patient-centered without losing control of the clock. In this episode, you'll learn: Why “healthy” food is often viewed through an Anglo-American lens, and how that can unintentionally shame patients' cultural foods  How to be curious before corrective when talking about nutrition, weight, chronic disease, and food traditions  How to use the plate method more flexibly What to say when patients want to improve blood sugar, blood pressure, cholesterol, or inflammation without giving up familiar foods  Why frozen meals, canned foods, jarred foods, dried beans, frozen vegetables, and center-aisle foods absolutely belong in realistic nutrition counseling  How to help patients reduce added sugar without making it feel like punishment  Maya's strategy for “sugar interactions” and helping patients create a beginning, middle, and end around sweets  How to start the visit by asking what is on the patient's mind, while still addressing your clinical priorities Resources Mentioned:Episode 146: When Culture is Erased from GuidelinesConnect with MayaAny Questions? They tore them down, shipped them off, and hoped you'd forget they ever existed — but Kim St. Onge isn't letting that happen. On this Kim on a Whim, Kim takes you from the Christopher Columbus statue that vanished from Tower Grove Park to Confederate monuments quietly returning to Baltimore — and asks the question the left refuses to answer: if you erase history, does that mean it never happened? Marc and Kim break down the radical push to melt down statues, rewrite school curriculum with the 1619 Project, and rename everything that offends even a single person. Plus — the man who made Juneteenth a national holiday couldn't even explain what it was, and the Marc Cox Morning Show has the receipts. History doesn't disappear just because you tear down the statue — and this segment proves exactly why the left wants you to think it does. Jan Ullrich, a rider from the same era who later admitted he doped too, still officially holds his 1997 Tour win.So why did one man get erased from cycling history while the other kept the biggest victory of his life?In this episode, we dig into the strange legal and sporting gap between guilt, evidence, and punishment. From Operation Puerto and Ullrich's 2006 downfall to USADA's case against Armstrong, this is the story of how two doped riders from the same poisoned era were judged in completely different ways. It's not a story about innocence. "The Storm That Erased a City: Galveston, 1900"A Kol Simcha Productions Podcast: On the morning of September 8, 1900, the 38,000 residents of Galveston, Texas woke up to enormous, thrilling waves — and went to the beach to watch them. By nightfall, at least 8,000 of them were dead. The 1900 Galveston Hurricane remains the deadliest natural disaster in the history of the United States — more than five times deadlier than Hurricane Katrina. This is the full story: the arrogance that left a city defenseless, the physics of storm surge that swallowed an island whole, the eyewitness accounts of survival and loss, and the breathtaking engineering comeback that followed. In this episode, we cover:Why Galveston in 1900 was one of the most important cities in America — the "New York of the South" and the "Wall Street of the Southwest"How the island's maximum elevation of just 8.7 feet above sea level made it catastrophically vulnerableIsaac Cline, the Weather Bureau chief who called the idea of a damaging Galveston hurricane "a crazy idea" — nine years before one arrivedHow Cuban forecasters saw the storm coming and warned U.S. meteorologists — and how those warnings were suppressed by the bureau's director, Willis MooreA minute-by-minute account of September 8, 1900, including the 4-foot surge in 4 seconds at 7:30 p.m., documented by Isaac Cline in his own firsthand reportHow floating debris became battering rams, destroying city blocks in a chain reactionThe engineering marvel that followed: a 17-foot seawall and raising an entire city on hand-turned jackscrewsWhy Galveston lost its crown to Houston — and never got it backWhat this storm teaches us about storm surge, dismissed warnings, and hurricane preparedness todayTimestamps0:00 — Cold Open: September 8, 19001:30 — Welcome to Weather With Enthusiasm3:00 — Galveston: The New York of the South6:00 — The Storm Builds: Science & Arrogance9:30 — September 8 — Hour by Hour14:00 — The Aftermath17:00 — What Science Learned19:30 — Outro & What's NextKey Facts From This EpisodeThe 1900 Galveston Hurricane made landfall on September 8, 1900 as a Category 4 stormStorm surge: approximately 15.7 feet — on an island with a maximum elevation of 8.7 feetEstimated wind speeds: 120–140 mph (the anemometer blew off at 6:15 p.m. after recording 100 mph)Death toll: a minimum of 6,000; most estimates cite 8,000–10,000; some reach 12,000Isaac Cline's 1891 Galveston Daily News article called a damaging hurricane "a crazy idea"The 4-foot-in-4-seconds surge at 7:30 p.m. is documented in Cline's own Monthly Weather Review reportThe Galveston Seawall: 17 feet high, 3.3 miles long at completion on July 29, 1904More than 2,000 structures were raised on hand-turned jackscrews; the island grade was elevated up to 17 feetThe seawall proved itself in the 1909 and 1915 hurricanes — the 1915 storm killed 8 people, versus thousands in 1900Sources & Further ReadingIsaac M. Today's Headlines: Trump got a three-hour physical at Walter Reed and posted that everything checked out "PERFECTLY." and is also building a UFC cage on the White House lawn for a $60 million birthday fight with VIP packages at $1.5 million each — because that's what the people's house needs. On a completely different note, Pope Leo dropped his first encyclical, a 42,000-word document warning the world's 1.4 billion Catholics about AI concentrating power in the hands of a tiny elite, with Anthropic cofounder Christopher Olah participating in the Vatican's formal presentation — and the Pope also issued the first-ever papal apology for the Vatican's role in legitimizing the trans-Atlantic slave trade, framing it as a warning about what AI could recreate. Back to the war nobody can define, the military carried out "self-defense strikes" against Iranian missile sites while Trump posted that negotiations are "proceeding nicely" and a spokesperson insisted they were "using restraint during the ongoing ceasefire" — ok. Meanwhile, New Jersey Senator Andy Kim got pepper sprayed at a protest outside the Delaney Hall ICE detention center after state officials were barred from inspecting conditions that led detainees to organize a hunger strike. Speaking of the administration burying bad news, the DOJ filed motions on the Friday before Memorial Day to dismiss the most serious January 6th seditious conspiracy cases, then one hour later scrubbed all records of January 6th prosecutions from their social media archives, calling them "partisan propaganda." On the redistricting wars, federal judges blocked Alabama's racially gerrymandered map citing "undisputed evidence of intentional racial discrimination," South Carolina's Republicans declined to redraw their maps only because early voting had already started, and Ken Paxton — too corrupt even for most Republicans — won the Texas Senate Republican primary with Trump's endorsement, setting up a general election against Democrat James Talarico. The episode kicks off with the Question of the Week: “Do you like that games do cosmetic-only purchases, or would you prefer game-changing content?” The hosts quickly find common ground, passionately agreeing that games should never allow players to buy a competitive advantage. From battle passes to microtransactions, the discussion dives into the modern gaming landscape and why cosmetic-only monetization feels far more fair to players who value skill and balance over pay-to-win mechanics. With the traditional roll of the dice, the episode launches into a barrage of Bad Dad Jokes, courtesy of Joe's middle child, Bob. The jokes come fast, the groans come faster, and the entire segment perfectly captures the wholesome chaos that defines Wise_N_Nerdy humor. Next comes the heartfelt “How Do I…?” segment, where the hosts discuss an important topic for parents everywhere: not letting pride get in the way of being a good parent. Through honest conversation and personal insight, Charles, Joe, and Todd explore how humility, communication, and admitting mistakes can strengthen relationships with your kids and help families grow together. The dice then guide the show into the thoughtful “Parliament of Papas” segment, featuring a question from community member MithrilBiata about fostering independence for a cousin with AuDHD. The hosts approach the discussion with empathy and care, sharing perspectives on encouragement, patience, and creating supportive environments that empower neurodivergent individuals while still respecting their unique challenges and strengths. From there, the episode shifts into the fan-favorite “Daddy, Tell Me A Story” segment, where Todd Sarner shares incredible memories from his time working as a roadie for Metallica. From behind-the-scenes chaos to unforgettable concert experiences, Todd's stories offer a rare glimpse into life on the road with one of the biggest bands in music history. Finally, the episode wraps up with the always entertaining “What Are You Nerding Out About?” segment. Joe shares his excitement about setting up a Raspberry Pi project to host a bot he created for the Digital Media Track Discord server. The bot, hilariously named Quasar—short for Questionably Useful Automated Scheduling Assistant Robot—perfectly embodies the nerdy creativity at the heart of the show. Meanwhile, Todd talks about using manga as a tool to improve his Japanese language skills, specifically mentioning Erased. In a perfect moment of synchronicity, Charles reveals that he had just finished watching the Erased adaptation that same week. Charles also shares exciting updates about how things are finally coming together between his six-month contract work and his Sunday morning gig, bringing the episode to a hopeful and uplifting conclusion. This episode is a perfect blend of gaming culture, fatherhood, fandom, humor, and heartfelt conversation. Whether you're here for the nerdy discussions, the parenting insights, or Todd's incredible stories from the music world, there's something for everyone. Yogurt Shop Murders: Four Lives Erased in One Night

Hidden Killers With Tony Brueski | True Crime News & Commentary

December 6, 1991. Four teenage girls walk into a yogurt shop in Austin, Texas. By midnight, all four are dead, and the building is on fire. What investigators find in the wreckage is almost nothing — a crime scene deliberately torched to erase every trace of the killer. Almost every trace.Amy Ayers was 13. Jennifer Harbison and Eliza Thomas were 17. Sarah Harbison was 15. They were employees and friends gathered at the shop on an ordinary Friday night. The crime committed against them was methodical, violent, and calculated in a way that experienced investigators recognized immediately — this was not the work of impulsive teenagers. This was a predator who knew what he was doing. In Part 1 of this five-part series, we reconstruct the night that redefined Austin. Who these four girls were. What the fire tried to erase. What it failed to destroy. And the families — including a mother who lost both daughters in the same act of violence — who would spend the next three decades waiting for answers the system couldn't provide. The yogurt shop murders aren't just a cold case. They're the story of how one crime fractured an entire city — and how the search for justice destroyed innocent lives before it ever found the truth.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Alright folks, welcome to The Kevin Jackson Show, where we don't just connect dots… we tell you who drew the map, then who tried to redistrict you out of it.Because Leftists want us ERASED. From history.I heard that while we are looking to negotiate with Iran, they attacked one of our ships and Trump responded with a “love tap”. I use that term when I was fighting competitively…But I smell a rat here. Every time negotiations get close, something suddenly happens. A ship gets hit. A militia wakes up feeling spicy. Somebody fires a missile like they're trying to impress girls at a regional warlord mixer.Part of it may be the chaos inside Iran right now. Power struggles, factions, instability. Or maybe this is just how Iran negotiates: “Before we discuss peace terms, we'd first like to set something on fire.”And I actually appreciate Trump's measured response. Because Democrats desperately want him to overreact. They want mushroom clouds so they can run on, “See?! He's insane!”But instead Trump treats Iran like a drunk cousin at a barbecue. “You calm down or I'm gonna have to thump you in front of everybody.”A couple strategic swats. A little reminder. Nothing theatrical. And that drives the Left CRAZY because restraint ruins their screenplay.Every time Trump appears on camera looking calm and competent, Democrats react like vampires hearing a church bell. Because they remember Biden.Good grief. Biden shuffled around like a Roomba searching for a docking station. The man would start a sentence in Ohio and finish it emotionally in Brussels. And I'll get deeper into Iran later because this situation still needs to play out. Geopolitics is like crockpot cooking. Featuring an extraordinary quintet of Herbie Hancock, Freddie Hubbard, Ron Carter, and Elvin Jones, the album blends haunting lyricism with daring harmonic exploration. First, he breaks down the Charlotte Hornets' controversial overtime win over the Miami Heat and why LaMelo Ball's takedown of Bam Adebayo should have led to an ejection, not a postgame review. Ric explains why the NBA's obsession with protocol over fairness continues to fail players, teams and fans in the biggest moments. Then he turns to what he sees as an even more troubling trend: the growing effort to downgrade Kobe Bryant's greatness through lazy comparisons, out-of-context stats and revisionist hot takes. Ric dismantles the idea that Dwyane Wade was on Kobe's level, explains why numbers alone cannot define greatness, and revisits Kobe's unforgettable Game 7 performance against the Celtics to show why box scores can never capture will, command and championship impact. This is a sharp, unfiltered episode on NBA officiating, LaMelo Ball, Bam Adebayo, Kobe Bryant, Dwyane Wade, NBA media narratives, instant replay, playoff basketball, Lakers-Celtics history and why the modern obsession with stats is distorting how greatness is remembered.Time Stamps: 0:00 Intro 1:58 Hornets-Heat controversy and why LaMelo Ball should have been ejected 4:06 The NBA's fatal flaw: protocol over fairness 7:49 Why Ric says LaMelo's explanation made it worse 12:40 Why the league's review comes too late 13:21 Why the posthumous downgrading of Kobe Bryant has gone too far 14:27 Ric reacts to the Dwyane Wade vs. Kobe Bryant comparison 16:49 The stat that exposes the gap between Kobe and Wade 18:03 Why today's NBA discourse is being warped by box scores and clips 20:33 Kobe's Game 7 vs. Boston and the greatness stats can't measure 24:36 OutroHashtags: #OnTheBall #RicBucher #NBA #LaMeloBall #BamAdebayo #CharlotteHornets #MiamiHeat #KobeBryant #DwyaneWade #Lakers #Celtics #NBAPlayoffs #NBARules #InstantReplay #BasketballPodcastSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/bucher-and-friends. IBLP's Teachings Erased the Concept of a Victim

In most systems, when someone is harmed, the question is what the perpetrator did. Inside the Institute in Basic Life Principles, the question was always what the victim did to cause it.IBLP's central teaching — the "umbrella of authority" — told families that staying under hierarchical authority meant spiritual protection. If harm came to you, it was because you stepped outside the structure, or because someone above you had secret sin that created a "leak." The person who actually caused the harm was never the primary focus. The victim's obedience was. That doctrine extended everywhere. Marriage teachings told wives their bodies weren't their own and warned against resisting their husbands. Purity culture defined women's value by their modesty and sexual history. Courtship placed fathers in total control of their daughters' romantic lives. And the organization's own literature on sexual assault eliminated the concept of a blameless victim entirely — always redirecting the focus to the harmed person's spiritual positioning. The practical effect was a system where reporting abuse felt like confessing a sin. Where women in abusive marriages couldn't leave because divorce was framed as spiritual failure. Where children learned that their suffering was evidence of their own disobedience. This is Part 2 of a five-part investigation into the inner workings of IBLP. Not the celebrity families. The operating system. The belief structure that evangelical scholars have called legalistic, extra-biblical, and designed to silence the people most likely to be harmed. And the question at the center: when a doctrine tells victims they caused their own abuse, is that a failure of the system — or is it the system working exactly as intended?Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? In Nefertiti's Crown, she blends meticulous research with vivid storytelling to reconstruct the volatile Amarna period, revealing Nefertiti not as a passive icon, but as a formidable political force at the center of a dangerous and possibly suppressed chapter of history. Happy Women's History Month! This week we're discussing the wonderful women of STEAM (yes, we include the arts here) that have had their work stolen, co-opted, or overlooked by men and the dominant culture. Thank you to all the women in academia, research, creative fields, business, politics, etc. who persist, push back, and put men in check - I absolutely cannot wait to read your stories and studies, I know they'll be *chefs kiss.* I know I mispronounced a lot in this episode, as always feel free to shoot me a DM or comment with correct pronunciation, I really do appreciate the help. Also yes, I meant to say “retrograde menstruation” not “reverse menstruation” - the world simply escaped me. Make sure to like and subscribe on Youtube, rate me 5 stars on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, any place you're listening to this podcast. Y'all are the best.
