In Part 1 of this week's Next on the Tee, I'm joined by two of the most legendary PGA Professionals the game has ever known—quite possibly ranked 1 and 1A on that list. First up is PGA Professional Hall of Famer Bob Ford. Bob's accolades span across four Hall of Fames, the prestigious William D. Richardson Award from the Golf Writers Association of America, and the Bobby Jones Award—one of the highest honors in the game. He's served as Head Professional at both Oakmont and Seminole, and his coaching tree reaches wider than any in history. If you've watched the U.S. Open over the past decade, you've likely heard his voice—he's been the official Starter since 2017 and will continue as long as he wants the job. Bob shares his insights on this year's Masters, what to expect from the U.S. Open's return to Oakmont, and, as a proud Yinzer, throws in some thoughts on the Steelers. Then, I'm honored to welcome another giant in the game—Suzy Whaley. A Hall of Famer in her own right, Suzy was the first female President of the PGA of America, is a Golf Magazine Top 100 Instructor, and currently preparing to Captain the U.S. Junior Ryder Cup team. She was also recently on the bag for her niece, Phoebe Brinker, at the Augusta National Women's Amateur. Suzy reflects on that experience, discusses the potential for a Women's Masters Tournament, and we explore a few exciting job opportunities where her leadership would be a perfect fit. Don't miss this conversation with two all-time greats.
The fifth inductee of the Rocky Mountain section of the PGA's Hall of Fame reminisces on his time as a golfer.

Scotsman Iain Forrester has been a golf professional since 1983, moving to The Netherlands to become the Head Professional at Hoenshuis Golf & Country Club in Limburg. Iain believes that “……a PGA Professional needs to have a diverse skillset – a jack of all trades and a master of one or two. That's what I've tried to do with my career, to be as flexible as possible, learn as many skills as possible and then have a niche that separates you from others.” Iain's particular niche of choice focusses on maintaining and preserving the history of golf, in particular the way it was played in the past with wooden hickory clubs. Iain repairs and restores hickory equipment for fellow collectors while also suppling sets for hickory events throughout Europe. As if that's not enough he has also written extensively about hickory golf and golf history in general. Safe to say he's a great man to have on the pod to talk about on all things relating to hickory and Dutch golf. Iain's website can be found here (https://hickoryclubs.eu/) The Golfika article on the history of British Handicapping mentioned in the show can be found here (https://en.golfika.com/_files/ugd/72472f_cdab7f2449764a07881a5d9711ca6a67.pdf) - pages 6 - 11. Slowing everything down in Real Tennis is essential because of the small margin of error. And when you start making mistakes, the most important thing to do is to go against your instinct and wind down the game, not to allow to spiral down endlessly into even more mistakes. Jon Dawes is now Head Professional at Hatfield House Real Tennis Club, and as a younger player won the Under 18 British Open. In this episode of Martial Attitude Voice dedicated once more to the world of Real Tennis, he shares his career's insights behind the reality of training in a sport where everyone can be a worthy opponent, because of the handicap system and the peculiarities of each Real Tennis court which might provide the upper hand against you. If you are visually impaired or blind, or if you know someone who is, and would like to take part to the series of Martial Attitude Voice podcast interviews exploring touch, confidence and blindness or if you would like to join in the Martial Attitude Training workshops now running in London every Sunday, please do keep in touch via Instagram or according to your communication preferences, all available HERE. Played in less than 50 places in the entire World, Real Tennis is very different from Lawn Tennis not just because it is the original "true" thing born many centuries ago and played by figures like Henry VIII. Real Tennis is played in an asymmetrical court, which many unusual features could make someone think about squash to a certain extent, and with hand made balls which are pretty unpredictable in behaviour and not replicable on large scale. Josh Smith is Head Professional at the exclusive Holyport Real Tennis Club, in Berkshire, built in 1889 by renowned court builder Joseph Bickley. His expertise as a coach and international ranking player is at the core of this interview dwelling in the multifaceted characteristics of the sport, and it helps identify the sport psychology aspects which might more affect the players. In his opinion, to excel at Real Tennis there is a need for specific "sport intelligence" and for a "short-memory" attitude to never look back at the past points, but only focus in the present moment of the game. Easier said than done, in this interview, we try to understand more about what tennis is Real Tennis and what its players are made of. If you are visually impaired or blind, or if you know someone who is, and would like to take part to the series of Martial Attitude Voice podcast interviews exploring touch, confidence and blindness or if you would like to join in the Martial Attitude Training workshops now running in London every Sunday, please do keep in touch, via Instagram or according to your communication preferences, all available HERE. Originally Uploaded April 26th, reloaded May 2nd. For Media Business Episode 71: Tony Conley has a three-part conversation welcoming back Bill Mory who after spending 13 years as the Head Professional and Director of Golf at Walnut Hills Country Club in East Lansing, MI his wife Karen and he purchased Meridian Sun Golf Club in Haslett, MI (formerly Pine Lake Golf Course) in February 2000. For this Spring 2024 conversation the pair cover several topics including: -Golf business in Michigan -LIV & PGA -The 2024 Professional Golf season -Media coverage of golf -Augusta National and its playing season -Advise for beginning golfers over 50. Bill grew up at a course much like Meridian Sun and taught himself to play with tips from my father and an old time golf pro by the name of Joe Nadolny. Shagging golf balls and playing as many as 54 holes in a day at High Cliff Golf Course, He learned that golf is about getting the ball into the hole in the fewest number of strokes. It wasn't about having the perfect swing, but rather about having fun and hitting as many good shots as I could muster. During 27 years as a PGA Professional, I have taught both male and female golfers at every skill level from beginner to professional and every age from 2 to 96. My teaching and coaching philosophy and methods are simple and have been developed through years of study and experience in coaching my various students as well as from playing competitively throughout my life in high school, college and professional events such as the United States Senior Open, the PGA Tour's Buick Open and the Ben Hogan Tour (currently the Web.com tour). I enjoy sharing my knowledge of the game and hope that it will not only help you to improve your game, but also enjoy it to the fullest. Golf is a game that is played and enjoyed for some many reasons including the beauty of the course landscape, recreation and socializing with friends and family, exercise, travel, competition with self and others and the challenge of hitting that perfect shot or improving on your best score. Yes, it has it's frustrating moments, but we should be thankul for those for without them, we could not enjoy the victories regardless of how big or small. Many of my youth students have gone on to successful high school, college and professional careers, but what I find most rewarding is to see my students playing more golf and enjoying it at a higher level with their family and friends. My passion for junior golf and coaching kids is demostrated in our terrific youth golf program at Meridian Sun Golf Club and in having served as both the Girls and Boys Golf Coach at Haslett High School for nine years. The game of golf has been a wonderful blessing my life and if the information I share can encourage you and others to play more golf and have more fun experiencing the many wonderful aspects of this game, I am humbled. » Visit MBN website: www.michiganbusinessnetwork.com/ » Watch MBN's YouTube: www.youtube.com/@MichiganbusinessnetworkMBN » Like MBN: www.facebook.com/mibiznetwork » Follow MBN: twitter.com/MIBizNetwork/ » MBN Instagram: www.instagram.com/mibiznetwork/

Isabella Graf moved to the United States from her native Germany early in life. She may be a shining example not only of proverbial "American Dream," but also of the experience and education available in the private club industry, where she is fast becoming one of its leaders. Chosen to be a regional leader for the United States Professional Tennis Association and Head Professional at The Landings in Fort Myers, Florida, Graf is looking to become a mentor in her own right after learning from so many. As a graduate of the Professional Tennis Management (PTM) program at Methodist University, and with three internships under her belt, one for each summer through her collegiate years, Graf believed, she was well prepared for the industry. That was until she realized that member relations, not teaching, is at the heart of our industry. Those internships at the clubs, she says, were crucial to her development just as much as her work in the classroom and understanding stringing techniques. Standards and character are what Isabella looks for when hiring. She realized early in her career that these were the two traits required of a leader in the hospitality business, and through her own self-reflection and discipline, raised the bar for herself, personally. And now, she looks to these traits when raising the bar for a racquets program and while hiring to fill positions to bring that program to a "best-in-class" status. Graf is going places and understands the industry far better than many of her more senior colleagues. Listen in as she explains how she looks to be a mentor in her own way, not just to other female teaching professionals, but to all in the business of member relations.

Bobby Nichols recounts his early PGA Tour wins, several of which Bruce Devlin later won including the site of their first victories, the St. Petersburg O pen. Bobby takes us back to his 1964 PGA Championship at Columbus CC where he played the final round with Ben Hogan and secured a wire-to-wire win, setting a scoring record that was to stand for thirty years. He gratefully remembers his relationship with Firestone CC as their Head Professional and remembers winning the 1964 Carling World Open at Oakland Hills over Arnold Palmer, again playing with Ben Hogan who was quoted as saying "you ought to pay me to play with you!" Bruce enjoys reminding Bobby of the drubbing Bruce and Bob Charles put on Bobby and Tony Lema in the 1964 CBS Golf Classic but Bobby turns the tables reminding Bruce of his win the following year at the Houston Classic by 1 over Bruce and Chi Chi Rodriguez. While onsite at Kapaula for the Sentry Tournament of Champions, Kris Strauss captures an interview with Michael Castillo. As the Head Professional of the Plantation Course at Kapalua and former President of the Aloha Section PGA, Castillo comes from a rich heritage of golf in Hawaii. His father is long-time club pro Ron Castillo, who has played the Sony Open 10 times. His five children all became golf professionals. His daughter, Lori, won the US Junior Girls in 1979 and US Women's Amateur Public Links in 1980 and is in the Hawaii Golf Hall of Fame along with her father. Michael Castillo may be 60 years old and a five-year cancer survivor, but he birdied 18 and putted well in 25 mph winds to take the section championship earlier this fall on the Island of Kauai. Now, as the oldest player at the Sony Open in a field that includes three-time major champion Jordan Spieth, Team Troon members Gary Woodland and Matt Kuchar, Castillo is pleased and honored to have a chance to play and take in this PGA TOUR experience…with his “ohana” along for the ride.

Getting Better Now from the Golf Business Network with Dean Kandle, PGA
One thing we could probably all agree on is that traditionally the golf industry is pretty resistant to change. Look at the way we staff our golf operations with a Head Professional and X number of Assistants. That's been the model for as long as anybody can remember. Add to that the scope of the job for everyone on the staff from teaching some, running events, doing some merchandising, etc. It's been the same for a long time. As we know we're either in or approaching a crisis in the golf business. We need more Golf Professionals and while there are differing views on how we're going to find them, no one has their finger on the definitive answer. With that said, with challenges like these come innovation and now is the time to start thinking differently about how we structure the jobs at our facilities. At the forefront of this are two players in particular. The first, Club Corp, isn't really known for innovating in the employment department within our industry. The second, Retail Tribe, is dedicated to helping clubs and Golf Professionals grow their business. The marriage between the two has created a new role for the modern Golf Professional that is revolutionizing how we view the impact a Golf Professional can make on the bottom line. In a nutshell, as you will hear, Club Corp took traditional teaching professionals and Assistant Professionals and started incentivizing them to engage with members, develop programming, and generate excitement around the golf program. In turn, the Professional receives a cut of membership dues, program revenue, membership retention dollars, and spend on other items at the Club. Because they found that the more engaged a golfer is, the more the use the facility and the more they spend. And who better to engage golfers than a PGA Professional. It's something that when you say it out loud, you respond with “of course”. But only now has someone stepped up and rewarded the Professional for the true impact they're making. This model has been so successful, that Club Corp is rolling it out at every one of their facilities. That's right, all of them. Take the time to listen to this entire presentation that GBN hosted at the PGA Show this year. This model has the potential to revolutionize how Golf Professionals work and could save the industry in a time of crisis. Yes, it's that powerful. Here's GBN's presentation with Ian James, the CEO of Retail Tribe, Mark Gore, the Sr. Vice President of Golf Operations at Club Corp, and Matt Anzalone, the Regional Vice President of Player Development at Club Corp.
