In this episode of Inside Golf Podcast, Andy sits down with Andrew Harvie, managing partner at Golf Club Atlas to discuss his two recent trips to Florida and Texas. They dive into the Florida private golf bubble and many of the exciting new developments in the Sunshine state, including Apogee, High Grove, the Ranch, Sandglass, Cabot Citrus Farms, and many others. Andrew then discusses his recent trip to Texas, which includes Childress Hall and Luling, two exciting new clubs from Tom Doak, Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner, and Kyle Franz that are set to rival the Oohoopee Model. They identify which of these new developments will shine and receive critical acclaim, and the question that I continue to ponder, is any of this good for the game of golf—being that all of the best architecture is matriculating at ultra private destination clubs that 99.9% of the golfing public will ever get to experience. Thanks for listening and subscribing to Inside Golf Podcast with Andy Lack, cheers!

In this episode, Sam speaks to the founder and CEO of Cabot - Ben Cowan Dewar - about his early experiences with the game of golf and how he came to be one of the youngest developers in the business when we began work at Cabot Cape Breton at the age of 25. Since then, Cabot has become a powerhouse in the world of resort golf, with the portfolio of Cabot properties growing to Europe in Bordeaux, Scotland with Cabot Highlands which will see the addiiton of the new Tom Doak course (Old Petty) this summer, St Lucia with the latest Bill Coore & Ben Crenshaw designed course and Citrus Farms in Florida. Andy Johnson sits down with Bob Crosby, Chairman of the USGA's Museum Committee, for a wide-ranging conversation about the golf architecture trends of today. Bob shares his view on what he sees as a turning point in the industry, as the next generation of golf architects need to distinguish themselves from the minimalism trend developed by the likes of Tom Doak and Coore & Crenshaw. Andy and Bob discuss the uptick in new courses being built during the 2020s, as fresh faces in the golf architecture world now have an opportunity to build their own projects. They also discuss the place of traditional clubs in today's game and why many golfers may opt for a different type of playing experience.
Golf architect Tom Doak sits down with Andy Johnson for another mailbag-focused episode of "Yolk with Doak." Thanks to questions from Club TFE members, Tom discusses what motivates him to continue in his career, how he helps develop the careers of his associates, and learning to appreciate his own work. Andy and Tom go back and forth about what a Doak-designed major championship course would look like and why modern golf courses may not be the best hosts for majors. To end this episode, the two take a deep dive into Tom's experience building Stone Eagle in Palm Desert, California. Tom details the initial routing for the course, the struggles of building on rocky land, and how the elevation changes impact building a golf course.
Andy Johnson sits down with Tom Doak for the first of two October Yolk with Doak episodes. To start, Tom shares travel tips for golfers headed to Australia, New Zealand, and links courses throughout Ireland and the U.K. Andy and Tom then talk through Tom's first round at Sedge Valley and his experiences playing his own design for the first time. They then discuss the strategy around designing and playing short par fours, debating on whether longer hitters should resist temptations to reach the green in one. This leads into a conversation about the prevalence of analytics in golf, as younger golfers now have access to more data and information about their own games and swings than prior generations. This episode wraps with Tom talking through the pros and cons of working on private or resort courses and more accessible public courses, and how the feedback he'll receive is different based on how often golfers play a course.

Brett has just completed a master plan for a renovation of William Land Golf Course, a nine-holer in a city park, and he expects to finish his master plan for historical work at Haggin Oaks, an Alister MacKenzie design, later this year. Brett talks with Garrett about a variety of issues related to these projects, from California's water crisis to techniques for building great golf on flat land to MacKenzie's wild late-period greens. Brett and Garrett wrap up the episode with some chat about sneaky-good public courses on California's Central Coast.
The stars finally aligned recently in providing me with an opportunity to spend some time with Angela Moser - golf course architect, shaper and world traveller! There was no sign of either a dozer or a digger.... although I am absolutely sure that one of those is undoubtedly in her immediate future. In this episode we take a deep dive on Renaissance's only current Irish course, St Patricks Links @ The Rosapenna Golf Resort, where Angela, Tom Doak, Eric Iverson, Clyde Johnson, Brian Schneider, Brian Slawnik, Blake Conant, Don Placek & Co. have created what in all likelihood will probably be the last great links to be built in Ireland. We take a look Angela's back story in golf, which started by chance when her parents enrolled her in a three day golf summer camp for kids in her home town of Augsburg, Germany. The golf bug bit, ultimately leading her towards a degree in Landscape Architecture at the Munich Univeristy of Applied Sciences, followed by a year long Erasmus scholarship in Sheffield. This UK sojourn, afforded Angela both the encouragement and opportunity to immerse herself in disciphering the myriad puzzles that many of the great UK courses afford golfers. After graduation, Angela worked in Greenkeeping and Golf Course Design in Germany and Austria. An internship with Renaissance Golf Design would follow in 2011 and the rest as they say is history. We take a look at some of this history, while also looking at a few of the upcoming projects that are on the drawing board and one that our interview subject might be inclined to put there, should the opportunity every arise. Many thanks to Angela for graciously affording me the time to speak with her. We both very much hope you enjoy our chat. If you want to find out more about The Olde Glen Bar, Glen Village, Co. Angela Moser has just completed the #10 Course at Pinehurst for Tom Doak's Renaissance Golf Design - she joined me recently for golf at St Patricks Links (no surprise, she's a baller) and a number of conversations, one of which we recorded for your enjoyment. Our full conversation takes a look at Angela's career to date, which includes significant involvement at St Patricks @ Rosapenna, The Renaissance Club in Edinburgh, The Loop at Forest Dunes, Pinehurst #10 and much much more... Editing is still in the works, however, this piece is too good not to share immediately as a wee teaser for what's to come next week. Music supplied under license from Epidemic Sound Track - Neutron Skies by Roots & Recognition Special Guest: Angela Moser.
Rod Trump is a passionate golfer who was looking for a golf course to purchase. Rod discovered High Pointe in Northern Michigan, which was Tom Doak's first golf course design which had opened in 1989 as a daily fee facility and closed in 2009, a victim of the Great Recession. Rod, working with Tom, is reviving High Pointe as an elite national golf club. We talk with Rod about his journey in the game, his baseball exploits growing up in Baltimore, his early experience caddying at Caves Valley, his business career in tech and subsequently as an angel investor, and what led him to pursue ownership of a golf course.
Angela Moser sits down in person with Garrett to share the story of how Pinehurst's latest course, the Tom Doak-designed No. 10, was built. As lead associate on the project, Angela was in charge of getting the course ready for play in under a year. From the moment she found out she was getting the job to playing the first rounds on the course, she discusses the most difficult parts of the project, how the role of lead associate differs from shaper, and the holes she thinks will be the most talked about.

Wake up, wake up, wake up it's the first of the month! Andy is back with Brendan for this Monday and first of the month recording. He shares a couple of amusements from vacation, laments the Illini loss, and has some questions about Danny Hurley amidst what's still a Victory Monday for Brendan (big college hockey fan). Then they get to the Houston Open and an eventful weekend in which Ale Tosti went mainstream. They discuss the coverage of the Tosti One, Jaeger's breakthrough win and what happens to his AAAA status, and that last putt by Scottie Scheffler in an otherwise great week. There's also plenty of praise for Tom Doak's Memorial Park and pleas to let him design a full major championship test. After an EXCITING announcement about a new sponsor but returning product, they relay an all-time Tosti Tale following his big breakout weekend. Elsewhere in golf, they discuss Nelly Korda's dominant spring and how it will work for the LPGA and the rise of Japanese winners on the DPWT, including at DLF this weekend. They close with news on Bryson DeChambeau's video playing a rolled back ball and how it unintentionally makes a compelling argument for the rollback.
This is a whiparound rambling Wednesday episode that begins with a hat chat: how many is too many? Shane Bacon joins Brendan Porath to discuss this pressing question before getting to one of the great delights of the year: the European Tour's stop at DLF, the first true “so bad it's good” course in this podcast's history. There is some intel from the ground about a potential hardship that has a few caddies grumbling but might be further evidence that Gary Player is one of our great modern architects. Speaking of Gary, they discuss his tweet that the foam roll bunkers could be color coded and changed, one of many benefits according to Mr. Player. There's also a bit about how some are using whiskey in Delhi as a preventive health device. There's also intel from the ground at the Houston Open, where the Tour might be neutering some Tom Doak work with a big backboard. Cutthroat Corner returns and this time a fan favorite is in the crosshairs. They close with news of some TGL return dates and Phil Mickelson's caddie change.
Andy Johnson, the founder of Fried Egg Golf and Shotgun Start podcasts, discusses his journey in the golf industry and the leaps of faith he has made in following his passion fo the game and the impact that has made in the golf media landscape. In this conversation, Jim and Andy chat about how Fried Egg Golf has made golf course architecture accessible for a wider audience. The conversation touches on recent trends in golf course architecture, the potential for a Tom Doak-designed championship course and the memorable round Andy had last year at Augusta National after the Masters. In Angle of Attack, Andrew and Jim continue their series designed to help junior golfers (and really any golfer) bring down their scoring average over time. In this episode, they focus on the short-range putting and chipping skills that are often the difference a golfer shooting 78 and 76. Hatgate. The Talk Birdie To Me WhatsApp group has been going crazy this week. Mark is grumpy about the lack of a Tara Iti hat, Nick is unapologetic that he should not be regarded as a hat courier for people. How does it all end? We find out on the pod. The elephant, or hat, in the room needs to be discussed before we get to any golf chat. After that convo, we get to the golf. Mark has had a sneak peak at the new Commonwealth course, we've put some pics on socials, he loves it and can't wait to play it. Nick suggests we do a pod from Commonwealth, so we're on. Mark discusses how he loves the way that Tom Doak designs golf courses. Nick is a massive fan of the history at golf clubs, of the history lesson when you walk through the clubhouses - the names, the pictures. There was the big meeting in the Bahamas last week with all the big wigs from the PIF and the PGA. Mark has some inside info from his US source on how the meeting went, what was discussed, the vibe in the room. And Nick and Mark discuss what it could mean and how things may end up.Nick has finally caught up on the new series of Full Swing, and we discuss some of the stories. Both Nick and Mark have some thoughts on Keegan Bradley after watching the series.A fun Top 5 today, Nick counts down his Top 5 weirdest hats on Tour Pros over the years. A bit of controversy with one left out that Mark felt should be in the list. Pod listener Steve calls in from the beautiful Rich Rivers Golf Club with a story about watching the great Peter Lonard playing there recently. Which takes us to feedback, lots of it, including a ripping caddy question which we'll follow up next week - and we run through your votes and comments on the GOAT, and put Nick and Mark on the spot to name their GOAT. Interestingly, they each name a different player.Lots of fantastic performances over the last week, and Nick runs through them all in the PING global results, and we wrap the show with a masterclass from Mark Allen inspired by Pro Keith Mitchell on the importance of holding your head still, or close to, right into your follow-through.And this Thursday we'll have a bonus pod with the legendary Peter Chooky Fowler where we'll pick his brains on his short game. Can't wait! We're here each week with the great support of PING, see your local golf shop or professional for a PING club fitting. Just like they have with Nick O'Hern, PING will help you play your best. And the Golf Clearance Outlet, great prices on the best gear. In this second part of our course diaries from Old Barnwell we catch up with the lead designers on the project, Brian Schneider and Blake Conant. These two disciples of Tom Doak share their experiences on acquiring the right piece of land in Aike, South Caroline, routing the course, construction, shaping and what inspired them to push this design to the extreme. Old Barnwell pushes the envelope of golf course design with extreme strategy, bold shaping and enormous contours which serve only to match the profile of the land the course sits in. 1st up from our travels in America is a course diaries episode with the man behind The Tree Farm - Zac Blair. How Zac finds time to develop a course and club with Kye Goalby & Tom Doak around a busy schedule playing on thePGA Tour is a mystery, but what he and the gang have built on the outskirts of Aiken, South Carolina is incredible.Great episode on the construction process, what he has learnt throughout the process and of course.. the secret to playing ‘the Thai spinner'. Mark Hissey has had quite an interesting journey, from growing up in an impoverished area of Wales to attending Harvard on scholarship and working in finance for 15 years, to then pivoting to golf by leading the charge to build and open Sebonack Golf Club (where he had a front row seat watching Jack Nicklaus and Tom Doak work together to design Sebonack) and most recently serving as Senior VP for Development for Discovery Land Company. We talk to Mark about all of that, as well as some of his other golf architecture experiences.
Already a Top 100 course in the nation, The Tree Farm was a vision of a PGA Tour Player back when it was a deep, dark and dense tree farm owned by a timber company. Looking to fully open its doors in September 2024, The Tree Farm is hoping to become not only a destination, but is also hoping to change how we might envision a golfing experience. The dream of PGA Tour player Zac Blair, The Tree Farm, a private club in Batesburg-Leesville, South Carolina, is just twenty-five minutes away from the revered Augusta National. Although Blair may have had some of the same desires as Bobby Jones had when he designed Augusta, Blair does not envision a major championship at The Tree Farm - he just wants the members to have fun and enjoy their game of golf. Simple. Just like the club's logo. Zac's dream started back in his native Utah, but when he was down in South Carolina with friends, he saw the property and started digging in - not earth - but his heels. He and renowned club manager, Eric Dietz, have set up a club to fully open in September, 2024. And, they have both gotten their hands dirty in creating a project that is cutting edge for the golf and club industries. Tom Doak, famed for his minimalist style, was perhaps the perfect choice to route the holes on the property that Blair wants to keep as the focus. Doak already had six courses in the Top 100 and studied under Pete Dye, while perhaps his biggest influencer was Alistair McKenzie. McKenzie of course studied under Bobby Jones. Blair then brought in his good friend Kye Goalby to finish the design - Kye had worked with Doak previously on several projects and was the best choice for finishing the ultimate design, says Blair. With 70 founding members, raising $35 million to help jump-start the project, Dietz and Blair know all 320 members. The two men are already well on their way to filling the 370 memberships at what will surely become one of golf's most desirable destinations. Blair has interviewed each and every member while Dietz welcomes them to the club, a club that is not steeped in tradition like past clubs he has managed, but is warm and welcoming to all levels of golfer. The Tree Farm revolves just around golf - there's no other real amenity. The clubhouse - the architect is a personal friend of Blair - is being designed and outfitted with the surroundings and natural, local environment in mind. The lodging is being built around an idea - Blair and Dietz call it "a lunch to lunch experience" - 24 hours, 2 rounds, 2 lunches, and 1 dinner to be enjoyed before departure. This idea of a course as a destination drawing members from miles away for a day or two, or even more, is a growing trend in the industry. With Streamsong outside of Tampa perhaps as the first of this kind, developers and financiers are finding large tracts of interesting land and building courses as destinations for day-trippers through to those looking for weekend getaways and week-long stays. Golf in Scotland, say at a Machrihanish or even further out like a Machrie, may have long before been destinations - and Blair and Dietz are using that model created long ago here in South Carolina, about as far from the Isle of Islay as one can get. "The course should be the star," says Blair. It's the course as to why people will want to come and visit. Golf course construction guru Mik Wells joins us this week to talk about his career in golf course construction, how that work has evolved in recent years as well as the influence he draws from the great golden age architects of yesteryear. Mik is such a fun person, we stayed wiht him up at the lodges in Cabot Highlands earlier this year and when we learnt he was over at Hinkley Golf Club doing some work to their bunkers during the off-season we couldn't resist going over for a bit of dinner and podcast! The work of Mik and the shapers are sometimes the most underrrated, the ability tio spoil any great concept or design, or equally bring to life something fairly mundane into some extraordinary. His latest project is building the new course at Cabot Highlands with architect Tom Doak and Clye Johnson, quite the task!In November & December we have teamed up with Spornia.uk, the no.1 golf net as rated by MyGolfSpy and Golf Digest. For the second of our two Thanksgiving-week Yolk with Doak installments, Andy and golf course architect Tom Doak tackle some more listener questions. Among other topics, they discuss Doak's recent Sedge Valley and Pinehurst No. 10 projects, designing short par 4s and shot courses that challenge elite players, difficult vs. "fun" courses, a wild idea for an Olympic course, and the pros and cons of blind shots.
Tom Doak is back for the first of two new episodes. In this first one, Tom addresses a variety of listener questions. He talks about the revival of his original High Pointe design outside of Traverse City, Michigan, and how it has been a unique project for Renaissance Golf Design. Andy and Tom then discuss the takeaways Tom has from Lido after a few days on site in October.
Bruce Hepner, former Vice President of Tom Doak's Renaissance Golf Design, was at the forefront of many current trends in golf architecture, from the Golden Age restoration movement to the revival of the design-build method. So we figured he would have an interesting perspective on the evolution of modern golf course design. Bruce and Garrett start by chatting about Bruce's passion for music and his recent renovation of Percy Warner Golf Course, a municipal nine in Nashville. They then discuss Bruce's epoch-spanning career, touching on his work in the early 1990s with Ron Forse, his experiences on Doak projects like Pacific Dunes and Ballyneal, and his thoughts on how the golf course restoration game has changed in recent years.
We start tonight's pod with an NLU tradition, a Max Homa cameo after another win for The Pro. Max hops on for a quick recap of his win in South Africa at the Nedbank and we offer some thoughts on the fall season thus far and enjoy some laughs thanks to some... interesting... comments from Mr. Player (21:45). Then it's on to Bermuda where Camilo Villegas wins on the PGA Tour for the first time since 2014 (24:00). We give Camilo some well-deserved praise battling back from the pro golf abyss amidst heartbreaking personal tragedy, offer our thoughts on the setup, and enjoy a nice rant from TC on some of the last few entrants into this week's field. After a couple of final notes from the Butterfield we dive into the latest news and rumors from the PGA Tour's future investment (44:00), some follow ups to our midweek TGL pod, and a recap of this week's LPGA event in Tampa (57:20) and TC and DJ's trip to see the new Pinehurst no. 10 golf course, designed by Tom Doak (1:00:45), a Tiger sighting as Charlie's caddie and more. Garrett joins Andy, aka "Sheddie Hackett," in the Fried Egg Golf Shedquarters for the first multi-person pod recorded entirely within the four uninsulated walls of Andy's backyard shed. They celebrate this momentous occasion by picking a "Dream 18" for Sand Valley in Nekoosa, Wisconsin. They select their favorite holes at each number (1 through 18) from the resort's five existing courses: Coore & Crenshaw's Sand Valley, David McLay Kidd's Mammoth Dunes, Coore & Crenshaw's Sandbox, Tom Doak and Brian Schneider's re-creation of C.B. Macdonald's Lido, and Tom Doak's Sedge Valley. Andy also gets in a few digs at large flagsticks.
In less than 10 years in the profession, Blake Conant has risen from crew member to shaper to the co-designer of Old Barnwell, a stunning new course near Aiken, S.C. Conant has primarily shaped greens and bunkers for Tom Doak at projects like Houston's Memorial Park, Bel Air, The National's Gunnamatta Course in Australia and… Read More Read More The post Episode 86: Blake Conant appeared first on Feed The Ball.

Don Placek began working for Tom Doak's Renaissance Golf Design in 1997 after being in Perry Dye's Denver office for several years. It was a significant jump, going from the types of technical builds Dye was coordinating in the western U.S. and Asia to Doak's more intuitive, organic way of designing and constructing courses. Placek… Read More Read More The post Episode 84: Don Placek appeared first on Feed The Ball.
While not our favorite course on property (Grant's takes are potentially offensive) we do admire the thoughtfulness of the design and the diabolical bunkering of Tom Doak.
On Wednesday, the USGA and R&A announced a Model Local Rule (MLR) that, if adopted, would reduce the flight of the golf ball in high-level tournaments. This is a historic move that deserves the mega-pod treatment. To kick things off, Andy and Garrett discuss the basics of the MLR and why the governing bodies have gone this route in tackling the distance issue (4:03). Then Andy brings on a series of guests: golf architect Tom Doak to explore the impact that the MLR might have on golf course design (30:04), former PGA Tour pro Roberto Castro to talk about the change from a player's perspective (48:34), and analytics whiz Joseph LaMagna to explore the effects that rollback could have on course management and strategy at the elite competitive level (1:09:23).
Lately Garrett has been wondering how recent technological advances, especially in the field of artificial intelligence, may change golf architecture in the coming decades. So he called up Peter Flory (@nle_golf), whose digital modeling was a key component of the Lido project in Wisconsin. Peter tells Garrett how he researched the history of the C.B. Macdonald-designed Lido Golf Club and which technological methods he used to help architect Tom Doak re-create the course in Wisconsin. Peter and Garrett then discuss the various effects that advances in digital and AI rendering may have on golf course design as a business and an artform.
After a two-year layoff to recover from shoulder surgery, Zac Blair is back on the PGA Tour this season. He's also back on the podcast, chatting with Andy about his return to professional golf. They also discuss the final stages of his Tree Farm project in South Carolina and the different contributions that he, Tom Doak, and Kye Goalby brought to the design and construction process. Finally, they turn their attention to the future, touching on potential golf developments Zac wants to be involved in and a golf trip that he'd like to take.
We're back with another edition of the Yolk with Doak, our series with golf architect Tom Doak. Andy and Tom devote a portion of this episode to discussing Ballyneal Golf and Hunt Club, Tom's acclaimed 2006 design in the Chop Hills of Colorado. They talk about Ballyneal's conception, how the owners influenced the final product, comparisons to Coore & Crenshaw's Sand Hills, and the holes that required the most earthmoving. In the second part of the episode, Tom fields listener questions about Old Macdonald at Bandon Dunes, whether par 3s can be strategic, holes with two greens, and the notion of playing a hole down another hole's fairway. Tom joins Andy to talk about the factors that will make No. 10 unique, including its elevation changes and the fast timeline for the project (his crew has already broken ground). They also discuss Pinehurst more generally, touching on the strengths of Donald Ross's No. 2 course and the importance of Coore & Crenshaw's 2010 restoration of it.
