Mitchell Silver, City Council Member for the City of Raleigh, North Carolina rejoined the podcast to talk about the transition from working as a staff member in local government to becoming an elected official. On Oct. 21, the Board of Commissioners gave the green light to a $17 million deal with Spratlin Construction to replace Fire Station 5 on East Cherokee Drive and Fire Station 29 on Cumming Highway. The current setups? Let’s just say they’re overdue for an upgrade. Station 5, built for volunteers back in the day, now crams six full-time firefighters into a shared bunk room. Over at Station 29, firefighters are working out of a temporary manufactured home. The new stations will have proper bunks, fitness areas, and space for equipment—finally. Construction kicks off summer 2026. STORY 2: Jordan Road to be closed Nov. 7-10 for railroad crossing work Heads up, drivers: Jordan Road will be closed at the railroad crossing near Highway 372 from Nov. 7-10, according to Cherokee County officials. The closure is just south of Nelson, so plan ahead. Detours? Yep, they’ve got you covered. Northbound traffic on Jordan Road should take Old Nelson Road, then Old Canton Road, Commerce Lane, and finally reconnect with Highway 372. Southbound? Stick to Highway 372, turn onto Commerce Lane, then Old Canton Road, and loop back via Old Nelson Road. It’s a bit of a maze, but temporary. Questions? STORY 3: Ball Ground investigating complaint about email from council member The city of Ball Ground is looking into a complaint about an email sent by Councilmember Annette Homiller to a city employee—an email that’s stirred up quite a bit of controversy. On Sept. 24, Homiller, whose husband Dan is running for mayor against fellow Councilmember Dennis Nelson, emailed the employee from her personal account. In it, she asked who he was supporting in the mayoral race and brought up a past real estate deal, even suggesting there might be financial motives behind his support for Nelson. “I can’t think of any other reason why you would support Dennis over Dan,” she wrote, adding a postscript: “Dan does not know that I sent this.” The employee has since filed a “hostile work environment” complaint, and the city is investigating. Homiller admitted to sending the email, calling it a “poorly written” mistake based on misinformation. “It was a bad idea from the start, and I deeply regret it,” she said, adding that she’s apologized to the mayor, her colleagues, and others involved. Her husband, Dan, defended her, saying, “She made a mistake—who hasn’t hit send on an email they wish they could take back?” Meanwhile, Nelson’s campaign confirmed the complaint in an Oct. 9 Facebook post, calling for a full investigation to protect city employees from political pressure. Break: COBB FALL FESTIVAL STORY 4: Woodstock council considers regulations for e-bikes  Woodstock might soon pump the brakes on e-bikes—or at least figure out where and how they can be ridden. At an Oct. 20 work session, Community Development Director Melissa Sigmund asked the City Council and Mayor Michael Caldwell to weigh in on regulating e-bikes, which combine pedaling with battery-powered motors. Complaints? Oh, there’ve been plenty. Here is what Mayor Michael Caldwell had to say about the e-bikes. MAYOR VO Sigmund explained the three e-bike tiers: Tiers 1 and 2 max out at 20 mph and are treated like regular bikes. Tier 3? They can hit 28 mph without pedaling, and that’s where things get tricky. Councilman David Potts said he’s seen modified e-bikes going even faster. Here is what Councilman David Potts had to say on this issue. COUNCILMAN VO Sigmund floated ideas: allowing kids under 12 to ride on sidewalks, banning Tier 3 e-bikes from trails, and requiring all bikes to yield to pedestrians. Education and signage would be key, she added. No decisions yet, but the council plans to revisit the issue soon. STORY 5: Cherokee County Football Power Rankings - Week 11  The Cherokee County football power rankings are in, and as Week 11 kicks off, there’s plenty to unpack. Sequoyah (7-1, 4-1)The Chiefs are rolling. Two straight wins since their only loss (to River Ridge), and now they face a winless Pope team. Let’s be real—another W feels inevitable. But the real showdown? The finale against Creekview, with the region title likely on the line. River Ridge (6-2, 3-2)The Knights have a huge test this week against Creekview. A win could shake up the playoff race, but QB Hunter Lockerman’s health is a question mark. Can Camden Cox carry the load? Creekview (4-4, 4-1)Don’t let the record fool you—this team’s dangerous. Mayrhofer, on behalf of the California Historical Association, Native Sons of the Golden West, Native Daughters of the Golden West, and The San Diegans. The flag is composed of three vertical bars, from left to right, red, white and gold. In the center white field is the official seal of the City and beneath it the date "1542," the year explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo first entered San Diego Bay and claimed the area for Spain. The use of the three vertical bars is reminiscent of the colors of the flag of Spain, which flew over Cabrillo's ship. Official City of San Diego Seal The official seal of the City of San Diego consists of a coat of arms within a circle. Above the arms are the names of the City and the state, and below the arms is the City’s official motto. official seal of the City of San Diego In 1913, the City Council authorized the City Clerk to invite design submissions for an official seal. The previous seal depicted an outdated cityscape. The winning design was the work of architect Carleton Monroe Winslow (1876-1946). Winslow would go onto design multiple buildings for the Panama-California Exposition in Balboa Park, and the Bishop's School in La Jolla. The new seal was adopted by Resolution 17024 on April 15, 1914. They discuss Levy's argument that the way that Israel withdrew Israeli settlements from Gaza in 2005 set the stage for today's genocide; as Levy put it in a recent +972 Magazine piece, the current Israeli paradigm is "not just separating from the Palestinians, relegated to shrinking Bantustans, but annihilating and erasing them." Moor and Levy also discuss the impact of Israel's attacks in Qatar this week both in the near and longterm, the need for Netanyahu to formally deny Israeli involvement in the assassination of Charlie Kirk, and shifting political approaches to Israel/Palestine.  Daniel Levy is the President of the U.S./Middle East Project (USMEP), which emphasizes the Palestine-Israel issue alongside regional conflicts, trends and geopolitics. From 2012 to 2016, Levy was Director for the Middle East and North Africa at the European Council on Foreign Relations. Prior to that he was a senior Fellow and Director of the New America Foundation's Middle East Taskforce in Washington D.C. and a Senior Fellow at The Century Foundation in New York. Levy was a Senior Advisor in the Israeli Prime Minister's Office and to Justice Minister Yossi Beilin during the Government of Ehud Barak (1999-2001). He was a member of the official Israeli delegation to the Israel/Palestine peace talks at Taba under Barak and at Oslo B under Yitzhak Rabin (1994-95). Levy is a founder and Advisory Board member of Diaspora Alliance (combatting antisemitism and its conflation), a Council Member of the ECFR, and serves on the board of the European Middle East Project. He is a former Trustee of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund in New York and of the New Israel Fund, a co-founder of J Street, and a founding Editor of the Middle East Channel at foreignpolicy.com.  Ahmed Moor is a Palestinian-American writer born in Gaza and a 2025 Fellow at FMEP. He is an advisory board member of the US Campaign for Palestinian rights, co-editor of After Zionism (Saqi Books) and is currently writing a book about Palestine. The federal takeover of D.C. police is now in its third week, and we were joined on this week's show by guests with different perspectives on the federal law enforcement surge in the District.Maryland Governor Wes Moore joined the show to weigh in. He has called the federal police takeover “disrespectful” and unconstitutional. Additionally, the Governor discussed his recent public spat with President Trump, with the White House hinting at the possibility of sending National Guard troops to Baltimore and potentially clawing back federal funding for rebuilding the Key Bridge.D.C. Police Union Chairman Gregg Pemberton joined the show to explain why he welcomes the federal law enforcement surge in the District, which he says has helped the MPD bring down crime and improve morale among local police. Plus, Pemberton discussed why he believes the D.C. Council should go further and repeal a 2022 police reform act, which limited certain uses of police force and increased police transparency. Congress voted to block certain aspects of the bill. D.C. For the 10th straight year, the Dallas City Council is considering lowering the property tax rate — even though many homeowners will still pay more due to rising home values and costs. However, the exact new rate is still under discussion, as city officials continue to review a proposed $5.2 billion budget and gather public input before a final vote in mid-September. Using this medication he has lost over 100 pounds and is still losing weight along with improving his overall health which includes his psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. Jimmy was elected to Valdez city council in 2020 and re-elected in 2023. He unsuccessfully ran for mayor in 2024, but he remains an active member on the council and is a founding member of their housing committee. Although Jimmy and I discuss the absolute destruction that cuts in federal funding will have on KCHU, much of the first part of today's episode will be about Jimmy's late grandfathers: John Devens Sr. who gained national fame in 1989 as mayor of Valdez during the Exxon Valdez oil spill and Jim Robison who was the president of the Alaska AFL/CIO and served as the Alaska Labor Commissioner from 1982 to 1987. We conclude our conversation with a discussion of housing policy.This interview was recorded while I was in Valdez on a walk with Jimmy, so you will hear occasional background noise including a very angry raven.

A Clare representative for small and medium businesses claims Irish society has failed to deal with the issue of juvenile repeat offenders when it comes to retail crime. The Irish Small and Medium Enteprise Assocation's new Business Crime Survey showes while just 36% of businesses have been affected by crime in the past 12 months, the most common forms are anti-social behaviour, vandalism, burglary and phising attacks. A whole 78% of respondents believe the judicial system fails to deter repeat offenders while 85% want more Gardaí and 76% are seeking tougher sentencing. The City of St. Paul has a new council member. Molly Coleman will represent Ward 4, which includes all or parts of five neighborhoods in the northwest part of the city. Coleman is filling the vacancy created by former St. Paul City Council president Mitra Jalali's resignation in January. She is the co-founder of an advocacy group, a graduate of Harvard Law School and the latest in her family to secure an elected position. Nick Spencer is a senior consultant and sustainability risk specialist in the Milliman Life and Financial Services practice based in London. Something interesting happened – or rather, didn’t happen – last week at a Seattle City Council committee meeting. There was supposed to be a vote on member appointments to the Seattle Renters’ Commission. That commission has seats for 15 members but currently only has five. The vote didn’t happen. That’s because Council President Sara Nelson and Councilmember Rob Saka failed to attend, leaving the committee shy of its three-member quorum. That sparked a lot of outrage, including from Councilmember Alexis Mercedes Rinck, who had this to say: “This isn’t a committee meeting any more. This is just a community meeting. It is council members’ chartered responsibility to be at these meetings. This is literally our job, so I find it deeply frustrating that people took time to leave their jobs in the middle of the day, yet not every member of the committee could show up to do theirs.” Many people have criticized the council members’ absence – and some are asking whether political motivations were involved.
