Occupied Thoughts
Apartheid, Genocide, and the Growing Chasm in the Right's Support for Israel

Occupied Thoughts

In this episode of Occupied Thoughts, FMEP Fellow Ahmed Moor speaks with Daniel Levy, President of the U.S./Middle East Project (USMEP). They discuss Levy's argument that the way that Israel withdrew Israeli settlements from Gaza in 2005 set the stage for today's genocide; as Levy put it in a recent +972 Magazine piece, the current Israeli paradigm is "not just separating from the Palestinians, relegated to shrinking Bantustans, but annihilating and erasing them." Moor and Levy also discuss the impact of Israel's attacks in Qatar this week both in the near and longterm, the need for Netanyahu to formally deny Israeli involvement in the assassination of Charlie Kirk, and shifting political approaches to Israel/Palestine.  Daniel Levy is the President of the U.S./Middle East Project (USMEP), which emphasizes the Palestine-Israel issue alongside regional conflicts, trends and geopolitics. From 2012 to 2016, Levy was Director for the Middle East and North Africa at the European Council on Foreign Relations. Prior to that he was a senior Fellow and Director of the New America Foundation's Middle East Taskforce in Washington D.C. and a Senior Fellow at The Century Foundation in New York. Levy was a Senior Advisor in the Israeli Prime Minister's Office and to Justice Minister Yossi Beilin during the Government of Ehud Barak (1999-2001). He was a member of the official Israeli delegation to the Israel/Palestine peace talks at Taba under Barak and at Oslo B under Yitzhak Rabin (1994-95). Levy is a founder and Advisory Board member of Diaspora Alliance (combatting antisemitism and its conflation), a Council Member of the ECFR, and serves on the board of the European Middle East Project. He is a former Trustee of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund in New York and of the New Israel Fund, a co-founder of J Street, and a founding Editor of the Middle East Channel at foreignpolicy.com.  Ahmed Moor is a Palestinian-American writer born in Gaza and a 2025 Fellow at FMEP. He is an advisory board member of the US Campaign for Palestinian rights, co-editor of After Zionism (Saqi Books) and is currently writing a book about Palestine. He also currently serves on the board of the Independence Media Foundation. His work has been published in The Guardian, The London Review of Books, The Nation, and elsewhere. He earned a BA at the University of Pennsylvania and an MPP at Harvard University. Original music by Jalal Yaquoub.

The federal takeover of D.C. police is now in its third week, and we were joined on this week's show by guests with different perspectives on the federal law enforcement surge in the District.Maryland Governor Wes Moore joined the show to weigh in. He has called the federal police takeover “disrespectful” and unconstitutional. Additionally, the Governor discussed his recent public spat with President Trump, with the White House hinting at the possibility of sending National Guard troops to Baltimore and potentially clawing back federal funding for rebuilding the Key Bridge.D.C. Police Union Chairman Gregg Pemberton joined the show to explain why he welcomes the federal law enforcement surge in the District, which he says has helped the MPD bring down crime and improve morale among local police. Plus, Pemberton discussed why he believes the D.C. Council should go further and repeal a 2022 police reform act, which limited certain uses of police force and increased police transparency. Congress voted to block certain aspects of the bill. D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said this week she appreciates the additional federal resources, and she shared numbers showing violent crime, and specifically carjackings, have decreased significantly in the city since the surge began. However, several D.C. Councilmembers have come out strongly against the federal law enforcement surge. Ward 4 D.C. Councilmember Janeese Lewis George got behind the mic to weigh in on the federal takeover of local police and what she's heard from residents. Send us questions and comments for guests: kojo@wamu.orgFollow us on Instagram: instagram.com/wamu885Follow us on Bluesky: bsky.app/wamu.org

For the 10th straight year, the Dallas City Council is considering lowering the property tax rate — even though many homeowners will still pay more due to rising home values and costs. However, the exact new rate is still under discussion, as city officials continue to review a proposed $5.2 billion budget and gather public input before a final vote in mid-September. In other news, While work has slowed from historic highs, Dallas-Fort Worth is second in the nation for new apartment construction in 2025 — adding more rental units than entire states like Georgia and Arizona. The Dallas metro is expected to welcome nearly 29,000 new apartments before the end of the year, trailing only New York City. DART delayed a vote on public transportation cuts aimed at saving $24 million a year. And, a months-long impasse over how to replace the unpopular mandatory Texas STAAR test for millions of public school students inched toward closure Wednesday – as Republican lawmakers drew closer to an agreement and the legislature's second special session approached its halfway mark. Dermatologist Dr. Erin Boh and patient advocate Brian Lehrschall discuss the challenge of managing weight, psoriasis, and psoriatic arthritis which share common inflammatory pathways and what can be done to improve all together.   Join moderator Jennifer Bomberger as she asks what is the connection between psoriatic disease and excess weight and what can be done to counter the effects of inflammatory cytokines for both with leading dermatologist Dr. Erin Boh and Brian Lehrschall who has lost over 100 pounds using diet, exercise and a GLP-1 receptor agonist. Hear Brian's story along with what is a GLP-1, how they work, and side effects.  The intent of this episode is to offer knowledge and an example of how a GLP-1 can be used successfully to improve the outcomes and management of psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. This episode is sponsored by Lilly. A Word of Warning This episode contains information about the body, like body size, weight management, healthy eating, and lifestyle changes. If you have a history of disordered eating or are struggling with body-related mental health challenges, you might wish to explore some of our other helpful tools. There are clinical terms used by our speakers about body size or body weight that you might find triggering. Key among them is the word ‘obesity.' While it is the scientifically correct name for a disease and a common clinical term, NPF acknowledges that this word is triggering and problematic, and it is used only for the clearest of accuracy. Timestamps: (0:23) Intro to Psoriasis Uncovered and guest welcome dermatologist Dr. Erin Boh and Brian Lehrschall, who has been living with psoriatic disease for over 30 years and has recently lost over 100 pounds.  (1:32) Health challenges Brian faced while trying to manage his weight, psoriasis, and psoriatic arthritis. (4:08)   Many factors contribute to psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, and comorbidities. (5:56) Discussing the sensitive subject of losing weight and changing lifestyle. (7:57) The inflammatory pathways and connection between excess weight and psoriatic disease. (14:50) Tips for managing multiple diseases like psoriatic disease, depression, and excess weight together.  Realize “it's not your fault”. (21:32) Are low calorie or anti-inflammatory diets effective with psoriasis? (25:21) The definition of a GLP-1 (receptor agonist), how they work, and benefits in resetting how the body functions. (30:02) Brian's experience and impact of using a GLP-1. (32:08) Current and future use of GLP-1 in the management of psoriatic disease, comorbidities, and excess weight. (34:49) Be an advocate for yourself to help do all the things that will make you feel better about living with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. Key Takeaways: ·       Obesity or excess weight is a disease driven by an overproduction of inflammatory cytokines. ·       Psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, and excess weight have shared pro-inflammatory disease pathways that should be considered together when identifying an effective treatment plan. ·       GLP-1 receptor agonists can be used along with dietary changes and exercise to induce weight loss that improves the body's reaction to medications used to treat psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. Guest Bios:   Erin Boh, M.D., Ph.D. is the Joseph Chastain Endowed Chair of Clinical Dermatology at Tulane University, School of Medicine where she is also a Professor and Chairman of Dermatology. Her clinical and research focus includes photobiology, chronic diseases such as psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, and skin cancers such as lymphoma. Dr. Boh is a past Medical Board member of the National Psoriasis Foundation and is currently a President's Council Member which represents an elite group of health care providers who are committed to the mission of the Foundation and finding a cure for psoriasis. Dr. Boh has published many articles including addressing today's topic about weight management and inflammation in psoriasis.  Brian Lehrschall has lived with psoriatic disease for three decades. He was first diagnosed with psoriasis about thirty years ago, at the age of 13 and with psoriatic arthritis at age 15. With the diagnosis came bullying which led to emotional eating. Per Brian “The more I ate, the worse the weight got.” Like most people who are overweight Brian tried to improve his health with diet and exercise. Along the way he learned about the connection between psoriasis and excess body weight. Eventually a physician recommended he try the weight loss medication GLP-1 (Glucagon-like peptide-1). Using this medication he has lost over 100 pounds and is still losing weight along with improving his overall health which includes his psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. Brian joined the National Psoriasis Foundation in 2000 as a volunteer and has become an advocate for improving access to care and sharing his story about living with psoriatic disease. Nick Spencer is a senior consultant and sustainability risk specialist in the Milliman Life and Financial Services practice based in London. He is a Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries and past Chair of its Sustainability Board and a past Council Member. He has written extensively on the integration of climate risks into actuarial work as well as on natural capital, biodiversity and broadly on aspects of the climate transition. Our sweeping discussion starts with risk, which, as an actuary, has been the backbone of Nick's career – analyzing it, measuring it, mitigating it. We look at the challenge of sustainability through a risk lens, and ask whether carbon should remain at the forefront of the discussion or whether it is more critical now to expand the list of priorities. Staying on the topic of risk we speak about standards, reporting and mitigation, and circle into adjacent areas such as the challenge of biodiversity loss, renewable agriculture and the hydrology cycle.  Naturally, some of these seem to be at times insurmountable challenges, and we assess the right mindset for staying in this industry long term.Nick suggested the following resources - see fiftyfaceshub for more details.   Sustainability Accelerator - Chatham House   https://donellameadows.org/systems-thinking-resources/   https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/final-report-the-economics-of-biodiversity-the-dasgupta-review  https://global-tipping-points.org/resources-gtp/Planetary Solvency – Finding Our Balance with Nature and  Planetary Solvency Dashboard ; Thank you to GCM Grosvenor and Resolute Investment Managers, Inc. for sponsoring Series 3 of 2025. GCM Grosvenor is a global alternative asset management firm with a longstanding commitment to supporting small, emerging, and diverse investment managers. Two City Council members missed a vote: a fight over renter representation ensued

Something interesting happened – or rather, didn’t happen – last week at a Seattle City Council committee meeting. There was supposed to be a vote on member appointments to the Seattle Renters’ Commission. That commission has seats for 15 members but currently only has five. The vote didn’t happen. That’s because Council President Sara Nelson and Councilmember Rob Saka failed to attend, leaving the committee shy of its three-member quorum. That sparked a lot of outrage, including from Councilmember Alexis Mercedes Rinck, who had this to say: “This isn’t a committee meeting any more. This is just a community meeting. It is council members’ chartered responsibility to be at these meetings. This is literally our job, so I find it deeply frustrating that people took time to leave their jobs in the middle of the day, yet not every member of the committee could show up to do theirs.” Many people have criticized the council members’ absence – and some are asking whether political motivations were involved. Soundside sat down with Seattle Times reporter David Kroman, and Seattle Renters' Commission Interim Co-Chair Kate Rubin to discuss. Her passion for serving the public began early in life, sparked while attending local public schools and actively participating in student governments. In particular, her experience in a high-school teen court program made an indelible impression — and led to a lifelong interest in public affairs and government. Not long after, she landed an internship with the City of Port St. Lucie's Community Relations Department, where she attained invaluable skills and knowledge into local government. She has stayed involved in the City of Port St. Lucie ever since those early experiences. This involvement has given her inestimable insight into local government operations and helped her develop an appreciation for the work of the City Council. Her eagerness to be in the know and make positive changes influenced her to volunteer in various political causes and campaigns while pursuing higher education at Indian River State College. Continuously engaged in the community, Caraballo also is an active member of the St. Lucie County Transportation Planning Organization and the Treasure Coast Regional League of Cities. She was the former Director of the PSL Historical Society and has served on the Keep PSL Beautiful committee. Caraballo is also the immediate past president of the Treasure Coast Regional League of Cities. In 2021, she became Vice Mayor and in 2022, she was sworn in as President of the Florida League of Cities, which promotes cities and local self-governance throughout the State. Since becoming President, Caraballo has focused on her initiative of #CommonGrounds, which urges local and state leaders to put people over politics, access over agendas and success over shouting, while strengthening our communities over the common grounds that unite us. She has been married to her husband, Ben, for 22 years. They have two children, Antonio and Anaiah. As a family, the Caraballo's enjoy the staples of PSL — spending their free time visiting local attractions such as the Botanical Gardens, the St. Lucie River, events at the Civic Center and watching the Mets play ball.   About Your Host, Jim Hunt: Welcome to the “Building Amazing Cities and Towns Podcast” … The podcast for Mayors, Council Members, Managers, Staff and anyone who is interested in building an Amazing City.   Your host is Jim Hunt, the author of “Bottom Line Green, How American Cities are Saving the Planet and Money Too” and his latest book, “The Amazing City - 7 Steps to Creating an Amazing City”   Jim is also the former President of the National League of Cities, 27 year Mayor, Council Member and 2006 Municipal Leader of the Year by American City and County Magazine.   Today, Jim speaks to 1000's of local government officials each year in the US and abroad.   Jim also consults with businesses that are bringing technology and innovation to local government.   Amazing City Resources:   Buy Jim's Popular Books: ·       The Entrepreneurial City: Building Smarter Governments through Entrepreneurial Thinking:   https://www.amazingcities.org/copy-of-the-amazing-city   ·       The Amazing City: 7 Steps to Creating an Amazing City:   https://www.amazingcities.org/product-page/the-amazing-city-7-steps-to-creating-an-amazing-city   ·       Bottom Line Green: How America's Cities and Saving the Planet (And Money Too)  https://www.amazingcities.org/product-page/bottom-line-green-how-america-s-cities-are-saving-the-planet-and-money-too   FREE White Paper: ·       “10 Steps to Revitalize Your Downtown”  www.AmazingCities.org/10-Steps   Hire Jim to Speak at Your Next Event: ·       Tell us about your event and see if dates are available at www.AmazingCities.org/Speaking   Hire Jim to Consult with Your City or Town: ·       Discover more details at https://www.amazingcities.org/consulting   Discuss Your Business Opportunity/Product to Help Amazing Cities: ·       Complete the form at https://www.amazingcities.org/business-development   A Special Thanks to Bearing Advisors for the support of this podcast:  www.BearingAdvisors.Net
