Juli Inkster is one of the greatest golfers of all time, a World Golf Hall of Famer, and will be awarded the 2024 Francis Ouimet Award for Lifelong Contributions to Golf at the Ouimet Fund's Annual Banquet on March 21, 2024. With a professional career spanning three decades, Inkster's career is highlighted by an incredible seven major championship wins, and she is ranked sixth all-time in career LPGA Tour wins. She has more wins in Solheim Cup matches than any other American, and is the only female golfer in history to win two majors in a decade for three consecutive decades by winning three in the 1980s, two in the 1990s, and two in the 2000s.Inkster grew up in Santa Cruz, CA, the youngest of three children and extremely competitive with her older brothers. While she played nearly every other sport growing up, Inkster picked up golf in her late teens, after having taken a job at Pasatiempo Golf Club. After choosing to attend San Jose State University on a golf scholarship, she launched into a prolific stretch of amateur golf, including being named a three time All-American, winning three straight U.S. Women's Amateur titles, and becoming the #1 ranked women's amateur golfer in the world. In recent years, Inkster has taken on a new chapter as a golf commentator, serving in both the booth analyst and interviewer roles for Golf Channel, Fox Sports, and NBC. Mid-Am Crisis: A Golf Discussion

It's a challenge to condense the career of Davis Love III into a few short lines. The World Golf Hall of Fame member has been a force in the game for over thirty years. As an accident player in the 90's he was a staple on major championship leaderboards. He won the 1997 PGA Championship in fairytale fashion and added two Players Championship titles to go with it. His 21 total wins on the PGA Tour puts him in rare company especially with his latest coming at age 51. Love is a two time Ryder Cup captain and currently serves as the US President's Cup captain for the 2022 matches slated for his home state of North Carolina. His career in golf has been incredibly impressive and even with all of those resume highlights, he's not done yet. Today, much of Love's time is spent working on his golf design business. Alongside his brother Mark, Love has built a design company that is founded on the principles of golf's golden age. Pulling inspiration from the likes of Seth Raynor, C.B. McDonald, Donald Ross, and Allister MacKenzie, Love Golf Design has a long list of projects to their credit and no two courses seem to be alike. In today's competitive golf architecture market, Love Golf Design is garnering lots of attention for their thought provoking renovation work. Their latest effort in Richmond, Virginia is a renovation and reimagination of the municipally owned Belmont Golf Course. Love joins me on Mid-Am Crisis to discuss that effort and much more.  During our discussion, Love and I dive into Phil Mickelson's recent win at the PGA Championship, his thoughts on the 2021 Ryder Cup matches(he's currently an assistant Captain for the team), and took a deep dive into his design career and the newly debuted Belmont Golf Course. We also took a detour into one of his great passions - cooking BBQ.  Love was kind to give me quite a bit of time for our discussion and it was a real treat to talk some golf with him. His insights into Phil winning over 50, the U.S. chances at Whistling Straights, and what his favorite BBQ stops around the south are were all fun to hear. I particularly enjoyed his perspective on golf design and why projects like Belmont are likely to become par for the course in the future as there are less opportunities to build new courses. I'm excited to share this interview and thanks to the good folks at Belmont for helping make it happen. About the Belmont Golf Course project... Belmont was originally designed by A. W. Tillinghast and hosted the 1949 PGA Championship which was won by Sam Snead. In the decades to come the course fell on hard times and conditions suffered. Some land was lost to infrastructure projects and the character of some holes changed forever. Faced with many challenges, the local government came close to shuttering the course before deciding to partner with the region's First Tee program and Love Golf Design to give the property new life. Thanks to those efforts, Belmont now has a fully restored collection of 12 Tillinghast holes, a sprawling practice facility, large putting course and even a six hole short course inspired by the best works of Tillinghast. The course re-opened in May 2021 and positive reviews are already flowing in.  To learn more about Belmont Golf Course and the vision for it's future, please visit https://www.playbelmontrva.org/ To learn more about Love Golf Design be sure to check out https://davislovegolfdesign.com/ Thanks as always for listening to Mid-Am Crisis. 777: When it comes to golf improvement, all too often we discuss and dissect various parts of our swings, our bodies, our mental state, our equipment, etc. Our guest today is Dr Ryan Caserta who has studied eye movement patterns as a way to improve all aspects of golf. For the past two decades, Ryan has analyzed key aspects of expert performance and how to maintain those levels. Working with amateur and professional golfers at every level has provided him insights on eye movement patterns rarely seen or understood. His perceptual-cognitive training has helped professional golfers win Majors, finish #1 on the money list, and helped a Golf Smarter listener and former guest (episode #495 Juan Gutierrez) to win the World Golf Hall of Fame Putting Championship. This week on Golf Smarter Mulligans episode 93, we hear part 2 of our conversation with one of the world’s expert on golf swing tempo, John Novasel. Previously this was an exclusive Members Only episode and these insights have never been heard publicly before. While many golf instructors pound into each student the importance of position, grip, and alignment, they don't talk much about tempo. The importance of tempo is a secret that every great player understands. Ernie Els' beautiful and effortless swing succeeds because of his consistent and calculated tempo. The importance of tempo is a secret that great players understand, and is discussed at length with John, inventor of the Tour Tempo Micro Player, app, and book.

As anyone who's watched the new HBO documentary Tiger can tell you, when you catch the golf bug as a kid, it can stick with you for a lifetime. Amy Alcott fell for golf when she was a little girl growing up in Los Angeles in the 1960s. Her mother gave her garden over to her daughter's passion, and the front yard became a putting and chipping green. Soup cans were hammered into the ground to make the holes. It paid off. Amy became a member of the LPGA Tour in 1975, and won five major championships and 29 LPGA tour events in all. She's in the World Golf Hall of Fame. What kind of kid -- especially a girl in pre-title IV era --has the self confidence to pursue a dream like that? And what kind of mother would glory in her daughter's delight, as Lea Alcott so clearly did in hers?Katie and Amy chat about Lea's own childhood, the idea of giving to your daughter what you didn't have access to, and the evocative powers of a good glass of Scotch whiskey.Artwork by Paula Mangin (@PaulaBallah)Music composed and performed by Andrea PerryProducer: Alice HudsonMother Word Cloud: Please contribute the one word that best describes your mother to the Mother Word Cloud.

Welcome back to another edition of the Edel Podcast.  Today, we have the pleasure of sitting down with my longtime friend, Mike Adams.  To this day, Mike continues to mentor both students and teachers.  He’s a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame and has worked with the majority of the Top 100 Teachers.I ask Mike what biomechanics means to him.  He says it’s “It’s the study of human movement and how people move in time and space.”Mike got started in the biomechanics sphere when his wife retained a ski injury.  The doctor that performed her surgery, Dr. Steadman, worked alongside Dr. Chuck Dillman who was the biomechanist for the U.S. Olympic Ski Team.  “Dr. Dillman and I became friends and started working on projects together.”  Through a lot of time and toil, the pair came up with different body types and how they relate to the motion of swinging a golf club.As time wore on, the pair, with the help of Dr. Ned Armstrong, developed a “testing system to find out what students could and could not do.”  This revolutionary process screens players for six things: wingspan vs. height, middle knuckle to elbow, elbow to shoulder socket, right hand grip, external shoulder rotation, and lower body pivoting.  The screens “give teachers a blueprint to move forward with their students.”When Mike describes the Ultimate Golf Lesson, he recounts the first one he did last year with Terry Rowles.  The event also featured some of the leading authorities in biomechanics and how their research and findings relate to golf.  He used force plates, video, launch monitors, and three-dimensional technology.  The premise was that “it’s better to test than guess.”Mike and I both maintain that it’s vitally important for the teachers of today to take these measurements and properly apply them to their students.  Where teachers get into trouble is trying to fit all their students to a single methodology.  That’s why these scientifically backed screenings are so valuable. In order for teachers to continue to improve their craft, and in turn get results for their students, they have to be continually learning instead of repackaging information that already exists.Mike and his partner Terry Rowles are about to release a new book.  It’s based on the two Ultimate Golf Lessons.  Their goal is to write the “the most extensive golf instruction book ever written, backed by science.”  If you want to become a better instructor, this book is a must read.Terry and Mike are also hosting a webinar that starts in February.  In the webinar, the industry’s best biomechanists and instructors are going to explore all the quantitative information they’ve realized.  It’s not meant just for instructors, however.  The information is accessible for players of all levels that have a desire to improve their game.I ask Mike what he wants his legacy to be.  His response is that “I contributed to helping people get better.”  Pretty simple and modest for one of the game’s greatest teachers. This podcast is chalked full of game-changing information so be sure to set aside a few minutes and give it a listen. As always, thanks for taking the time to sit down with us at the workbench on the Edel Podcast.  We’ll see you next time.
