Justin Mandon has been a guest on the podcast in the past, and we wanted to bring him back to discuss the reconstruction of the Alister MacKenzie-designed Pasatiempo Golf Club in Santa Cruz, California. This may be one of the best reconstructions we've seen in years, but it was not without its challenges. The work was broken into two parts: the front nine was completed first, and a year later, they worked on the back nine.Justin talks about selecting and testing the greens mix both at the mine and on-site when the mix arrived, along with the challenges he faced there. The front nine did suffer some salt damage that was very difficult to identify. It wasn't the total amount of salt in the water, but rather that the salt was the predominant element, overpowering all others and causing the young seedlings to wilt.He also discusses the EarthWorks amendment package he incorporated into the greens mix, which allowed him to grow the entire project using under three pounds of nitrogen. Restoring the architecture of a classically designed course is different from simply building a modern golf course; it's time-consuming and requires meticulous attention to detail to preserve the original MacKenzie layout. Killara Golf Club is celebrating 125 years in 2024! As one of the oldest golf clubs in Australia, Killara began its life in 1899 as Lindfield Golf Club and was also located on a different site than it is today. Only some details are known of the golf club's earliest history and I have set out to try and find some of those missing pieces during this podcast project. Working with Killara Golf Club on this project, some of what we have been able to discover includes the previously unknown first designers of the original Killara golf course, the beginning of the golf career of one of Australia's greatest ever amateur players, and never before heard details of Dr Alister MacKenzie's course report from 1926. Add to all of this, I along with you the audience, hear about the evolution of Killara's unique golf course through the various architects that have been involved, learn a bit about the early history of golf in Sydney, and get a broad understanding of just where Killara Golf Club sits within the golf landscape of Sydney. Brett Hochstein—a California-based golf architect who has shaped features for Tom Doak, Gil Hanse, Jay Blasi, and Jim Urbina, among others—joins Garrett Morrison to talk about his plans for two high-potential Sacramento municipal golf courses. 889: It's Masters Week which means Spring is here and golf is in the air. It also means we get to visit again with the grandson of legendary golfer Bobby Jones, Dr. Bob Jones IV. Bobby Jones, the most successful amateur golfer in history, in addition to being the most famous athlete in the world during the 1920s, was responsible for both the creation of Augusta National alongside course architect Alister MacKenzie, and the founding of The Masters Tournament in 1934. Neil Crafter is a golf course designer, historian and author who is based in Adelaide South Australia. Neil is a second generation golf course architect, following in the footsteps of his father Brian. Sean Tully of the Meadow Club in Fairfax, California, has made a name for himself as a fan and ultimately an expert on classic-era golf course architecture, particularly Alister MacKenzie designs. The Meadow Club, where Tully is director of grounds maintenance, is in fact the first course in North America designed by MacKenzie and one of several in Northern California. It's surely the cathedral of courses. That church of azaleas at Augusta National has the eyes of the world focused on it this week as The Masters once again gets our seasons under way. It was designed, of course, by Dr Alister MacKenzie, whose incredible body of work also includes those paradise must-play venues of Cypress Point, Pasatiempo and Royal Melbourne. We live in an era of renewed appreciation for the golf course architecture that came before us. For the past decade some of the greatest golf courses in the world have undergone restoration projects to bring back the original intentions of the their architects. On Episode 21 of TalkinGolf History we focus on one project - a course that was designed by the man many consider to be the greatest golf course architect of all-time; Dr. Alister MacKenzie and his gift to the average golfer, an everyman's course, his only public course that sits on the sea...Sharp Park. Bo Links joins the podcast to share the history of Sharp Park, how he and others saved it, and their efforts to restore it for future generations.

Hosted from 30 May to 2 June 2019, the Brabazon Trophy took place at Alwoodley Golf Club in Leeds.    The Brabazon is the short name for the English Men's Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship. Notable winners over the years include Guy Wolstenholme, Michael Bonallack, Sandy Lyle, Ronan Rafferty, Charl Schwartzel. Alwoodley is a spectacular inland course designed by Dr Alister MacKenzie, who went on to design Augusta National, Cypress Point and Royal Melbourne. However, Alwoodley was the first course he designed and so is known as the Original MacKenzie.   Set on Wigton Moor, Alwoodley is a natural heathland course and as such has springy fairways, areas of heather and natural-looking bunkers.   Responsible for maintaining the course for the competition was acting course manager Matt Brighton. Matt took over the role in March following the retirement of long-term course manager and BIGGA life member Philip Taylor.    BIGGA's Membership Services Manager Sandra Raper stopped by Alwoodley to find out how the team was getting on and to deliver some pork pies to keep them going.    While there she sat down for a conversation with Matt and James Crampton, the director of championships at England Golf, to discover what it takes to host a major amateur event. Away from the cameras and glamour that characterises The Open or other professional events, the greenkeeping team at the clubs that host amateur competitions want to put on a show of equal quality. The awards are an opportunity to recognise the incredible achievements of BIGGA members. We're looking to find out about those teams who have hosted a major event, like the team at Alwoodley, or perhaps they've completed a major project such as the renovation or rebuild of their course on limited resources. Maybe they've done incredible work to further the reputation of the greenkeeping profession – which can be charity work or just a lifetime of dedication? TalkinGolf History co-host Connor Lewis moved up a media grade recently when he appeared on Golf Channel alongside respected architect Jim Urbina in a short feature about the lost great club of the 20th century, The Lido. Built by the legendary C.B Macdonald and Seth Raynor why input from Tom Simpson and Alister Mackenzie, The Lido was widely regarded the equal of Pine Valley when it opened in 1914 but by 1942 it was gone. The course and its amazing has intrigued golfers for decades and with interest reignited by the Golf Channel piece last week now seemed a good time to flesh the story out further. Jay Blasi - Jay is an up and coming golf course architect. He was a part of the Robert Trent Jones Jr. team that designed Chambers Bay. We'll look back on the 2015 US Open and get this thoughts on what the player's feedback was about that event. We'll also look at his current project, restoring Sharp Park in San Francisco, an Alister MacKenzie design. Peter Kessler - I'll get Peter's thoughts on the Open Championship and where Jordan Spieth's comeback over the last few holes ranks among turnarounds to win a major. Also, did Spieth seal his place in the World Golf Hall of Fame before he turned 24?  

Bo Links is the co-founder of the San Francisco Public Golf Alliance. Bo and his colleague Richard Harris founded the San Francisco Public Golf Alliance to protect public golf in San Francisco, and for the past 10 years, they have been leading the fight to keep Sharp Park Golf Course open, despite efforts from various environmental groups to close the seaside links. Sharp Park was designed in 1932 by Alister MacKenzie, and at one time was labeled "The poor man's Cypress Point." Bo has been playing Sharp Park since the 1960's and is one of the course's greatest historians. After a 10+ year long legal battle, Sharp Park was designated as a “Historic Resource Property” under the California Environmental Quality Act, and now the SFPGA's next mission is to restore as much of the original Alister MacKenzie design as possible. Bo and host Kyle Surlow discuss what the journey has been like up to this point, and what will happen to Sharp Park going forward. There is something that seems eternal about Augusta. It's hard to imagine this corner of the world without golf, yet it's only been 85 years since Bobby Jones and Alister MacKenzie first broke ground at Augusta National, turning a former indigo farm and plant nursery into a masterpiece of golf architecture. We wanted to learn more about the events leading up to that legendary partnership, so we visited the Augusta Museum of History where we had the pleasure of meeting Executive Director Nancy Glaser and local author and sports historian Stan Byrdy. Together they shared a number of amazing stories and told us about the series of events that led to Augusta's rise in the world of golf. 448: Pasatiempo Golf Course has an amazing history that includes being the course that Bobby Jones played just before deciding that Alister MacKenzie should be the architect of his property at Augusta, Georgia, which became home to The Masters. Our guest is Ken Woods, Head Professional at Pasatiempo in the Santa Cruz mountains, just north of the Monterey Peninsula in California.
