No stranger to the DJ circuit, Indianapolis-based DJ/Producer Nicolas Rage (Ben Thomas) has been bringing the party to Indy and beyond for over 10 years. Priding himself on his ability to throw down any genre, he has found his place on stage with the likes of Big Sean, Wiz Khalifa, Grandtheft and more. Learning under Slater Hogan early and often, he developed a knack for a stylistic take on open-format sets. Having played legendary venues like the Indy Motor Speedway, The Egyptian Room at Old National Centre, Victory Field and more, Nicolas Rage continues to separate himself as a producer, having released six of his own remixes in the past year all while juggling a tech job at Salesforce! I've created this monthly series to share some sets I've done around the world with other Dj's or other club appearances. This is a set I did at Tini back in 2018 with Slater Hogan, before I made my first visit to the Philippines. Tini is a open format bar located in the Mass Ave. district of Indianapolis, Indiana. Slater Hogan is the co-owner of The Patron Saint and president of KIDpresents. He has played a huge role in the success of Transcension, a new monthly event that I host at the Saint, with the first episode from Olongapo City debuting later this month. This week's guest is Slater Hogan. Slater is a DJ and Indy legend who has over 100 releases on different music labels and has spun all over the globe. He started his promotion and production company, KID Presents, with longtime fellow DJ and business partner, John Larner in 2002. KID Presents has brought Indy incredible artists such as Skrillex, Snoop Dogg, G-Eazy, Steve Aoki, and Bassnectar to name a few. He fell in love with the house sound as a teenager living in Montreal back in the early '90s when he would stay up late on Friday nights and record a dance mix show on Montreal radio. He was hooked from then on. He then proceeded to start mixing with one tape deck and a cassette player and never looked back. When he moved to Vancouver in the late '90's, he started buying records almost daily and spent most of his free time at his favourite record stores at the time, Bassix and Mekanix records. Over the next few years, Darius held various residencies and ran 2 club nights in Vancouver, playing alongside such talent as Lawnchair Generals and Johnny Fiasco, as well as playing at numerous after hours and raves. Today, Darius is happily married with a young son, but his love for house music hasn't died. He is still busy putting out mixes and in 2015 is doing some exclusive guest mixes for International house collectives such as House Salad Music in Mexico, Little Routine in France, Reason2Funk and Uglyhouse in England. His sets have been described as "organic" and his love for jazz is prevalent in all of his mixes. Also in 2015, Darius has launched a monthly podcast entitled "Soul Room Sessions" with the support from House Salad Music, Reason2Funk, and Little Routine crews. The goal of this project is to promote the jazzy/soulful side of house music and features exclusive guest mixes by some of the biggest DJ's in the world! Quite a few tracks had me moving in my seat as I twiddled on the keyboard...so much so that I just had to get up and move.
