Ever wonder how a small-town auto recycling business thrives in today's complex market? Sherri Smith takes us behind the scenes at Smith Auto Inc in Pawnee City, Nebraska, revealing how a field of leftover parts cars evolved into a multi-faceted operation with 26 employees serving a town of fewer than 800 people. What began as a collision repair center in the late 1980s naturally progressed to rebuilding vehicles, which generated parts cars that accumulated until Bob Smith suggested they "start a salvage yard" in 1996. From that humble beginning, they've expanded to include full-service recycling, self-service operations, and scrap metal processing—all while maintaining the family values that form their company's foundation. The secret to their success? Creating a workplace culture where team members feel like family. Their weekly Friday lunches (the only time they close for an hour) bring everyone together for home-cooked meals and conversation. Company outings include employees' families, strengthening bonds beyond work hours. This approach has yielded impressive workforce stability in an industry often challenged by turnover.Technology adoption plays a crucial role in their ongoing evolution. From yard management systems to VIN decoders, texting platforms, and e-commerce solutions, Smith Auto Inc embraces tools that enhance customer service while adapting to changing consumer preferences. As Sherri notes, "People are in different time zones with different work schedules, so they're not always available to talk when we're at work."Looking forward, Sherri acknowledges significant challenges facing the industry—particularly the increasing complexity of vehicle technology that limits part interchangeability and requires specialized reprogramming. Yet their commitment to "constant and never-ending improvement" positions them well for whatever comes next.Whether you're in the recycling business or simply appreciate stories of entrepreneurial grit and adaptation, this conversation offers valuable insights about building a resilient enterprise through community, continuous learning, and unwavering commitment to quality. This episode Mike is still in the City of Brotherly Love, making the trip across town to Fat Jack's Comic Crypt. The staff could not accommodate a full interview, but one of the staff, Lucas, had time to make a quick recommendation of a couple books for Mike to read. So, that made this a perfect opportunity for a Pitstop episode! Unfortunately, Fat Jack's closed last year due to landlord issues, and the owner, Mike Ferrero passed away in December of 2024. The ICv2 website reported his death and stated, “Founded in 1976, Fat Jack's was an integral part of the Philadelphia scene” This episode is dedicated to Mike Ferrero and his nationally renowned comic shop. On a decidedly more positive note, Mike is joined into this deep dive of Junkyard Joe by one of the best comic podcasters out there, Adam Murdough! Adam has been one of the voices on the classic Comic Geek Speak podcast for many years. For those that have missed those Muddle the Murd segments, guess what? You get one in this episode! Here's to Mike Ferrero and Fat Jack's Comics Crypt. Thanks to Lucas for taking the time to make a recommendation, and a big thanks to Adam Murdough for joining the journey with Junkyard Joe!

This week's featured story comes from the Junkyard Tales collection. It's called "Fredland the Moose." It is summer, and the Junkyard is hot — too hot to stay home. On the steamiest summer mornings, the Junkyard animals take a "holiday" visit to the nearby lake with its hills of blueberry bushes. One such morning, something unfortunate happens: Ben Thompson gets lost in the woods. It takes the kindness of a friendly and rather large forest animal to help the town cat find his way back to his friends. James thought his first date with Missy went well—even after a rocky start at a craft beer tasting she couldn’t drink from. He improvised with ice cream and a walk… but didn’t mention that walk would be through a literal junkyard. Now she’s ghosting him, and he doesn’t know why. Turns out, Missy was genuinely scared for her life, thanks to binge-watching too much true crime. Was it a quirky childhood memory for James… or a red flag in rusted metal? In this unforgettable First Date Follow Up, we find out if Missy is willing to give James another shot—or if she’ll stay far away from industrial zones forever. There's a twist ending too: he made her jewelry from scrap metal. Is that creepy or romantic? You decide.

Click here to tell us about your favorite car, car story or automotive trivia !In this auto-adventure-packed episode of To All The Cars I've Loved Before, hosts Christian and Doug welcome SpeedyCop (Jeff Bloch)—YouTube/TikTok sensation, retired cop, and master of turning junkyard cast-offs into rolling masterpieces. From his very first car, a 1967 Chevelle station wagon “family heirloom,” to his world-famous upside-down Camaro and amphibious helicopter race car, SpeedyCop shares the craftsmanship skills and creative spark behind each build.Whether you're into car restoration, classic cars, or simply love a good car story, you'll be inspired by how an overactive imagination and a love for vintage lifestyle vehicles can transform rusting hulks into beloved cars that melt faces at every show. What happens when creativity, mechanical genius, and a self-described "extreme case of ADHD" combine? You get Speedy Cop, the automotive artist turning junkyard scraps into viral sensations that literally stop traffic and "melt faces" across the globe. In this captivating episode, we dive deep with Jeff Bloch, better known as SpeedyCop, who reveals the origins of his extraordinary talent for transforming discarded vehicles into jaw-dropping masterpieces. Jeff shares how his creative journey began with a family heirloom—a 1967 Chevelle station wagon with holes so large "you could literally reach inside the vehicle from outside and wave your hand around." From these humble beginnings fixing his grandmother's car with chicken wire and Bondo, Jeff developed a philosophy of "repurpose, recycle, and reuse" that would define his career. The conversation takes us through Jeff's greatest hits: the world-famous upside-down Camaro that's still running 11 years after being built in three weeks in his driveway; the "Spirit of Lemons" street-legal airplane car made from an abandoned 1956 Cessna 310 that runs 12-second quarter miles; and the sideways Volkswagen camper that generated over 156 million views online. With each story, Jeff reveals the thinking process behind these seemingly impossible creations, giving listeners unprecedented insight into where creative ideas truly originate.Perhaps most fascinating is Jeff's revelation that his extraordinary creativity comes without chemical enhancement—"I've never done drugs in my entire life"—but rather from what he calls a "God-given overactive imagination" coupled with his ADHD. Now retired after 27 years in law enforcement, Jeff's creative output is accelerating at his 20-acre mountaintop property in Tennessee, where he has "several lifetimes worth of projects" waiting to be built. In this auto-adventure-packed episode of To All The Cars I've Loved Before, hosts Christian and Doug welcome SpeedyCop (Jeff Bloch)—YouTube/TikTok sensation, retired cop, and master of turning junkyard cast-offs into rolling masterpieces.
