THE LAST SUMMER OF NATHAN LEE is a compelling narrative that delves into the life of Nathan Lee played by Harrison Xu (Bloodhounds/Netflix), a Chinese American teenager on the cusp of adulthood. Just days before his 18th birthday, Nathan is confronted with the harsh reality of a brain cancer diagnosis. Faced with a limited amount of time, he makes a life-altering decision to live each day with an unmatched zeal for life while also refusing to die a virgin. Nathan and Dash decide to document as much of his remaining life as possible. Without reservation, Nathan experiments sexually and falls in love with Lorelei played by Natasha Tina Liu (Here and Now/HBO), another high school friend. As Nathan realizes he cannot reciprocate Dash's true love, he decides to marry Dash, a Dreamer Immigrant, and gifts him an American citizenship. Quentin Lee - “Growing up in the 80s, I loved teen movies from that era which unfortunately not only have no Asian Pacific Islander characters but sometimes even have racist stereotypes like Long Duk Dong from Sixteen Candles, traumatizing API teens of my generation,” said Director Quentin Lee. “Even to this day, the dearth of API teen movies has inspired me to create Last Summer of Nathan Lee that not only reflect but is made for today's generation of BIPOC teens in North America. I hope it can be a Pretty in Pink that my own son, now only 7, will grow up to watch as a teenager in the future.” Quentin Lee is the winner of the 2020 Roddenberry Foundation Impact Awards for TV creators, a member of the Producers Guild of America, Canadian Media Producers Association and Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (Directors and Producers Peer Group), Quentin Lee is a multimedia creator and has directed and produced over ten feature films and three TV series. His first feature Shopping For Fangs (co-directed with Justin Lin) premiered at Toronto International Film Festival and became a cult classic as part of the Asian American New Wave Class of 1997. As a creator, he is currently developing Rez Comedy, the first Canadian Indigenous stand-up comedy TV series. Want to watch: YouTube Meisterkhan Pod (Please Subscribe)

It is the sequel to Scary Movie 3 and the fourth installment in the Scary Movie film series, as well as the first film in the franchise to be released under The Weinstein Company banner since the purchase of Dimension Films from Disney. It was directed by David Zucker, written by Jim Abrahams, Craig Mazin, and Pat Proft, and produced by Robert K. Weiss and Craig Mazin. The film marks the final franchise appearances of the main stars, Anna Faris and Regina Hall (who portray Cindy and Brenda, respectively), and concludes the original story arc. This was initially intended to be the final film in the Scary Movie film series, until Scary Movie 5 was released by The Weinstein Company on April 12, 2013, in a different storyline, with Simon Rex, Charlie Sheen, and Molly Shannon in different roles. A long time ago, in a galaxy, far, far away... Well, actually, just a few weeks ago, right here on the good old internet, our esteemed colleague, The New Yorker's Richard Brody, tweeted out two simple words: TÁR WARS. He was referring, of course, to the swirl of controversy around TÁR, one of this year's most talked-about films. The movie, directed by Todd Fields and featuring a central performance from Cate Blanchett, tracks the gradual downfall of one Lydia Tár, the egomaniacal and possibly predatory conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic. Though a likely lock for many end-of-year lists, TÁR has been fairly divisive among critics. So for today's podcast, Film Comment editors Devika Girish and Clinton Krute took inspiration from Mr. Brody's tweet and invited two well-matched gladiators—the valiant Jessica Kiang on the pro-side and the courageous Nathan Lee on the con—to debate the relative merits and demerits of TÁR. Two critics enter, one critic leaves… May the best critic win!

This week sees another episode of our Movie Gifts podcast. It's like Secret Santa but for movies—each participant picks a title for another that the recipient hasn't seen. It's a fun way to share enthusiasms and gain new insights on old favorites. For this round, Film Comment co-deputy editors Devika Girish and Clinton Krute invited FC contributor Nathan Lee and former FC editor Gavin Smith, two longtime friends, who were eager to assign each other movies. For Gavin, Nathan selected Paul W. S. Anderson's action-packed 2008 remake Death Race. For Nathan, Gavin chose Larry Cohen's 1976 apocalyptic sci-fi stunner God Told Me To. Devika and Clint were a little less considerate to each other: Clint gifted Devika the toxic 1979 football drama North Dallas Forty, while Devika gifted Clint her childhood favorite, Baby's Day Out, a madcap live-action cartoon about a sadistic baby running wild in the streets. Movie Gifts, or Movie Torture? Listen to find out. MUBI is offering a 30-day free trial for all Film Comment listeners. Nathan Lee (on Kubo and Lee - 'What We Do' single release) Interview by Paul Whiley on Radio One 91fm Dunedin
On January 17, 2008, 21-year-old Denise Amber Lee, was abducted from her home in North Port, Florida while she was cutting her two-year old's hair on her porch. Five 911 calls were made, including one from Denise, after her abduction. However, due to inaccurate logging of the 911 calls, police did not catch Denise's abductor, Michael King, in time to save her. After Denise's murder, Denise's husband, Nathan Lee, successfully sued the police department. He subsequently led for a 911 call reform on the police's policies and procedures. Nathan was able to implement changes to the state of Florida's 911 policies. He then created the Denise Amber Lee Foundation to improve 911 procedures throughout the United States.
