Tired, aren't you? Would it make you feel better to know you're not alone?Just a year ago we talked to Sarah Moe, Founder and CEO of Sleep Health Specialists about sleep deprivation and the toll it is taking on all of us. At the time we discovered the weird dichotomy of having more time at home (remote work, lockdowns, furloughs) with a decreasing amount of sleep. Somehow we keep getting worse at one of the three pillars of good health (diet and exercise being the other two) even though we're wearing pajamas and sweatpants more than ever in human history.Tara Haelle describes the new normal as "depleted." Not necessarily exhausted or depressed, just tapped out of reserves as we deal with the uncertainty of the times. Pauline Boss, PhD. describes this as a result of dealing with "ambiguous loss", trying to cope with a problem that has no clear foreseeable solution. It's a loss, says Haelle, of our "surge capacity." Dr. Michael Maddaus refers to this as our "Resilience Bank Account" - and it appears we are significantly NSF in that regard. Now, after yet another year of uncertainty a lot of people feel pretty crappy. Luckily for all of us there are simple things we can do to stop that slide into the abyss.Put your ears on and listen to a fun-filled hour of conversation and education as we discuss ambiguous loss, surge capacity, morning wood and K-Complexes.#Sleep #Wellness #SurgeCapacity #AmbiguousLoss #Resilience

There are a few things in life we take for granted despite how critical it might be to our very existence. Breathing, for one, is something we do 20,000 times per day without even giving it a thought. Despite it being a subconscious function, it turns out we're almost all doing it wrong. But what about sleeping? Another aspect of our life that encompasses roughly 33% of our time on this mortal coil, and we are screwing it up at an alarming rate. Americans in particular are turrrrrible at sleeping. So much so that the Center for Disease Control has stated that America's sleeping habits are cause for a National Emergency. Meet Sarah Moe, the CEO of Sleep Health Specialists. Her life's vocation is the study of sleep and polysomnographic technology, and she's worried about you. Not only that, she's worried about your employees. Using a "fatigue calculator", you can easily see how American businesses are losing billions of dollars on an annual basis, all because we're robbing ourselves of one of our most important primal needs - a good night's sleep. Even now, with more remote workers and more "accessible" sleep opportunities, we've managed to get worse. So get your ears on listen to my interview with Sarah Moe, all around sleep badass.
We talk endlessly about diet and exercise. But what about sleep? There’s no class in school, and in the workplace, there’s often a stigma around admitting fatigue. That’s where Sarah Moe saw her opportunity. "I tell people: I work in sleep medicine. That's a real job." A Board Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) who spent 10 years working for sleep medicine clinics, Moe created her own consultancy called Sleep Health Specialists. She spends most of her time helping businesses learn how to make their culture more sleep friendly. Today, 20 percent of the population suffers from a sleep disorder. The average employee costs an employer $3,000 per year from being tired—that’s illness, absenteeism and lack of productivity. Moe talks about how she set up her practice, how the corporate community is responding, and the enemy of sleep that’s even worse than caffeine: blue light. And what to do about it. After our conversation with Moe, we go Back to the Classroom with the University of St. Thomas Opus College of Business. Mike Porter is faculty director of the health care innovation program. He says that a lot of times, entrepreneurs who are so passionate about their pursuit can be challenged to make good business decisions. He talks about what Moe is doing right and what’s in it for companies that promote sleep.
