How can my partner and I get better sleep together?

If your partner is constantly snoring, hogging the blanket, or tossing and turning every five minutes, and you're finding it increasingly challenging to share a bed, know that you're not alone. A 2017 study revealed that while 50% of those surveyed claim to sleep as a couple, 41% prefer solo slumber, and 54% feel sleep-deprived. There are some tricks to make co-sleeping more manageable. First off, it's crucial to pick the right bed. Mattresses now come in a much wider range of sizes than before. The bigger the bed, the more comfortable you'll both be. A 2012 study by the Bedding Association found that couples switching to 160 by 200 cm beds experienced a 15% increase in sleep time. For partners who move a lot during the night, twin beds could be a solution - two single beds pushed together allow for personal space while sharing a room. That will significantly help preserve your sleep if your partner tends to have restless sleep. And what if my other half is a blanket thief? Now, what if your partner has nightmares or shouts in their sleep? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! For several decades, people's reported sleep quality has declined. This, despite the fact that specially optimized sheets, mattresses, and sleep trackers have emerged during that time, and despite the fact that the amount of time people are sleeping hasn't decreased for over fifty years. In other words, people aren't sleeping less than they used to, but are less happy about their sleep than ever before. My guest would say that to improve our experience of sleep, we'd be better off looking past the reams of modern advice out there and back in time — way, way back in time.Today on the show, Dr. Merijn van de Laar, a recovering insomniac, sleep therapist, and the author of How toSleep Like a Caveman: Ancient Wisdom for a Better Night's Rest, will tell us how learning about our prehistoric ancestors' sleep can help us relax about our own. He explains that the behaviors we think of as sleep problems are actually normal, natural, and even adaptive. We talk about why hunter-gatherers actually sleep less than we think we need to, how their natural wake periods during the night might explain our own sleep patterns, the methods they use to get better sleep, and why our modern efforts to optimize sleep could be making it worse. Merijn shares when it's okay to use a smartphone before bed, the myth that you have to get eight hours of sleep a night, how to intentionally use sleep deprivation to improve your sleep, and more.Resources Related to the PodcastAoM Article: 22 Ways to Get a Better Night's SleepAoM Article: What Every Man Should Know About SleepAoM Article: What to Do When You Can't SleepAoM Article: The Importance of Building Your Daily Sleep PressureAoM Podcast #661: Get Better Sleep by Stressing About It LessAoM Podcast #736: Could Sleeping in Separate Beds Improve Your Relationship?Study: Hadza sleep biology — Evidence for flexible sleep-wake patterns in hunter-gatherersConnect With Merijn van de LaarMerijn's website

Improve Your Environment to Get Rid of Sleep Interrupters  -       To have a good sleep, you need to eliminate or manage the amount of light in your room.  -       Your circadian clock will be disrupted if you're not managing light properly. Start dimming the lights in your house or create some ambient lighting so you can see where you're going. -       You can use red light bulbs that help as well. Some people will put on some blue light bulbs and turn those on. -        Use blue light-blocking glasses. Pick one of these and try to manage darkness again about 90 minutes before your target bedtime. -       You need to check the temperature. It is advisable to sleep in a chilly place to have a good sleep. -       Boost your serotonin and get better sleep. Anything you can do to increase your serotonin will improve your sleep.  [21:58] Lack of Sleep? You Should Enhance Your Sleeping Schedule!  -       To optimize your sleeping schedule, you need to wire genetically to wake up with light.  -       Light is better than just being jarred awake with some form of alarm in raising the temperature. -       You can use melatonin which is good for falling asleep. It's good for triggering the hormonal cascade we want for deep sleep. -       You can power through that target bedtime, get that cortisol response, and your sleep is compromised. That's a good time to use melatonin to help shut your brain down and calm yourself out. -       Dream optimizer is awesome for people that wake up in the middle of the night and want to go back to bed. A couple of sprays will get you another round of sleep.  [31:30] Does Melatonin Really Help You Sleep? Let's See!  -   Melatonin also helps regulate your body temperature, blood pressure, blood glucose, body weight, and levels of some hormones. -   Your melatonin levels start to rise when it's dark outside, signaling your body that it's time to sleep. They then decrease in the morning to promote wakefulness when it's light outside. -   Melatonin also binds to receptors in your body to help you relax. Melatonin's exact mechanisms are unclear. Research suggests that these processes may help you fall asleep. -   Melatonin is an effective supplement that may help you fall asleep, especially if you have insomnia or jet lag. It may offer other health benefits as well. [39:45] GABA: A Molecule of Chills and A Really Powerful Neurotransmitter -   Insomniacs are about 30% deficient in GABA and there's a genetic component to insomnia.  -       Supplementing with GABA can be powerful. Every form of GABA on the market is tested, and probiotics will produce neurotransmitters. -       When you take GABA, it signals through your gut to your brain that it's there, it's present, because it will not cross the blood-brain barrier. [46:58] Want to Try an Effortless Way to Track Your Sleep? Try Sleep Sensing! -       There is a pattern where your body will try to emphasize deep sleep or REM sleep; now both are happening all the time. - Only when a brain electrode is worn can you obtain reliable sleep tracking data. Pushing your brain that hard allows it to recover faster. The breakthrough Matt uses practically every night is consistently effective, and he has no problems. -       The other cool thing about the breakthrough is that you can play around with the dose. Some people get better results with one scoop, about four grams, and the full dose is two scoops.  AND MUCH MORE!
