Microplastics are in most of the water we drink, but what does that mean for our health and wellbeing? In this episode of The Happier Life Project, host Gabby Sanderson sits down with Dr. Sherri “Sam” Mason, one of the world's leading researchers on plastic pollution, to uncover the truth about what's in our tap and bottled water. Together they explore how microplastics affect our bodies and minds, and the small but powerful steps we can take to protect ourselves and the planet. If you've been noticing conversations around microplastics and wondering what they mean for your health, or if you're simply trying to make more informed, empowered choices; this episode will give you a grounded, hopeful place to start. Dr. Mason's groundbreaking research not only revealed the widespread presence of microplastics in freshwater systems but also helped shape legislation like the Microbeads-Free Water Act. Her work has been featured across major outlets including the BBC, The Guardian, and The New York Times, sparking global awareness about the hidden costs of plastic pollution. In this episode, she explains how science is catching up to the scale of the problem, and why understanding it is the first step toward change. Beyond the science, this conversation is about empowerment. You'll hear how reconnecting and protecting the environment can ease stress, restore a sense of agency, and inspire resilience in the face of overwhelming headlines. Most importantly, you'll walk away with practical, realistic steps to reduce your exposure and consumption of microplastics; proving that small, consistent actions really do add up to a healthier body, a clearer mind, and a happier life. The study we've been waiting for is finally here! The head of infectious disease, Dr. Marcus Servos, at Henry Ford Health conducted a retrospective study of vaccinated children v. unvaccinated children to document their health outcomes. He promised that he would publish the results but then decided not to. Why not? The answer may have to do with the "inconvenient" results of the study. They did not confirm the expectations of the pro-vaccine Dr. Zervos. But Del Bigtree, the CEO of ICAN (Informed Consent Action Network)and host of The HighWire, decided to get the results out to the world through the film "An Inconvenient Study". As Executive Producer, Del focused on the very results that Dr. Zervos did not want revealed. There were statistically significant better health outcomes for the unvaccinated children over the vaccinated. In this conversation, Del tells us what led up to the study being conducted and why he decided to secretly record conversations with the doctor who did not want to publish it. The implications of the results are staggering and they invite scientists and the general public alike to reexamine their presuppositions about the efficacy of vaccines and to consider the real harm these may be causing our children. We're pulling back the curtain and sharing the real areas we're actively working on in our marriage right now. Not from a "we've got it all figured out" place—but from a posture of humility, honesty, and a desire to grow together. We walk through four rhythms we want to strengthen as we head into a new season: • Praying together daily (and why it matters more than we realize) • Actually finishing our weekly marriage meetings—mission statement, core values, and all • Being more intentional about serving in our local church • Slowing down and soaking up this sweet (and chaotic) season with our kids If you want a practical, Christ-centered conversation that feels like friends on the couch figuring out marriage together... this one's for you. A stadium's worth of men—every year. That's the scale of new IPV use suggested by Ten To Men, Australia's landmark longitudinal study of male health. We sit down with research fellow Karlee O'Donnell a Researcher with the Australian Institute of Family Studies to unpack what the data really says about how depression, suicidality, paternal warmth, and social support shape men's risk—and what actually works to prevent harm.Across a decade of surveys, one in three men self-reported using some form of intimate partner violence. Yet within those hard numbers are practical levers. Men who strongly felt they received warm, respectful affection from a father or father figure were nearly half as likely to perpetrate IPV later. That's not about father presence; it's about the quality of care boys see and absorb. We translate that insight into real-world steps: father-inclusive perinatal care, concrete coaching on warmth and de-escalation, and programs that treat caregiving as core to men's health. We also dig into mental health pathways without reducing IPV to mental illness. Men with moderate or severe depressive symptoms were significantly more likely to use IPV later, and men with suicidal thoughts, plans, or attempts carried elevated risk independent of depression. We explore how anger, externalizing behaviors, and coercive control intersect with distress, and why services must protect partners while caring for the suicidal person. Clinicians get a roadmap: use screenings as early-warning signals, educate on escalation, build coping skills, and connect men to support before behavior hardens into harm. Finally, we highlight the quiet power of social support, which lowered the odds of IPV onset, and we make the case for policy that rebuilds men's community ties and includes fathers from day one. Healthier men mean safer families and stronger communities. If you care about preventing violence, ending loneliness, and improving men's mental health, this conversation points to integrated solutions you can act on today. If this resonated, follow the show, share with a friend, and leave a review to help others find it. What if one small daily shift could improve your mood, health, and motivation? Amy Hudson and Dr. James Fisher break down the science and practice of gratitude. In today's episode, they unpack how gratitude reshapes your outlook on life, boosts exercise habits, and even improves your health. Tune in to hear practical ways to build a daily gratitude practice, the real value of personal trainers, and how positivity ripples through families and communities. Amy explains that with Thanksgiving and the holidays coming up, it's the perfect moment to look at how gratitude shapes our overall well-being. Amy shares Harvard-backed research showing that gratitude is strongly linked to greater happiness. People who practice it consistently feel more positive, enjoy life more deeply, cope better with adversity, and build stronger relationships. Amy highlights a study where participants wrote weekly reflections on specific topics. One group listed things they were grateful for, another focused on daily annoyances, and a third simply logged neutral events. Amy explains that after just 10 weeks, the gratitude group not only felt more optimistic, but they also exercised more and visited the doctor less. Dr. Fisher highlights that focusing on what's good in our lives naturally builds a more positive outlook. And that emotional shift changes how we move through the world, physically and mentally. Amy and Dr. Fisher share that people with a more positive outlook often engage more in exercise and strength training. Dr. Fisher points out that this is a two-way street: exercise boosts positivity, and positivity increases your likelihood of working out. It's a reinforcing loop that improves the mind and body at the same time. Amy explains that a gratitude practice can be as simple as 5 minutes a day, five days a week, for six weeks. Research shows this habit supports mental wellness and creates lasting perspective shifts. Dr. Fisher shares that when we practice gratitude, we tend to spread it. Our positive emotions rub off on the people around us, and that ripple effect can change cultures and relationships. Amy highlights how grateful she is for the exercise coaches who show up every day to guide clients through life-changing workouts. She recognizes that their impact reaches far beyond reps and sets. Amy and Dr. Fisher emphasize that personal trainers bring the kind of knowledge, communication skills, and real-world relationship-building that no lab can replicate. Dr. Fisher explains that exercise coaches combine science, like physiology and biomechanics, with soft skills that help clients feel seen and supported. That blend is what gets real results session after session. Dr. Fisher highlights that personal trainers are, in many ways, healthcare professionals delivering preventative and rehabilitative support. Yet society often undervalues them, which is why he's so passionate about celebrating them. Dr. Fisher and Amy cover how the benefits of strength training ripple outward: healthier and fitter people influence their families, coworkers, and communities. Episode Intro:One of the two runners up for the Wilkes Center Climate Launch Prize this past year is De Novo Foodlabs, a startup with operations in North Carolina and Cape Town, South Africa, which is focused on using precision fermentation to synthesize a new kind of lactoferrin. I had to read up on this myself, but Lactoferrin, is a nutrient found exclusively in milk from mammals. It's in human breast milk, but commonly it's harvest from cow's milk and sold as an ingredient for infant formula, nutritional supplements, and health drinks. Lactoferrin is not only very important for infant health, but increasingly it's seen as a valuable nutritional additive for adults. BUT, and here's where the environmental/climate impacts come in – producing lactoferrin requires A LOT of cow milk currently. And raising cows for their milk, comes with a heavy toll on land and water resources, not to mention methane emissions from cattle. Enter, the potential for precision fermentation – which is basically laboratory grown lactoferrin – and companies like De Novo Foodlabs, which is hoping to capitalize on this growing demand for this health product, and help to save the climate while they're at it. Jean Louwrens, is one of the co-founders of De Novo Foodlabs, and he recently made some time to chat with me about their work, and the opportunities he sees for precision fermentation as a climate-friendly solution. Interview Summary:Jean Louwrens of De Novo Foodlabs discusses how his company uses precision fermentation and bioinformatic AI to produce NanoFerrin™, a sustainable, affordable alternative to bovine lactoferrin. Lactoferrin, vital for infant immunity, iron absorption, and overall health, is currently scarce and costly due to reliance on cow's milk. De Novo aims to expand supply, reduce costs, and enable broader use in infant formula, supplements, and functional foods. He highlights market growth, competition, regulatory challenges, and the environmental benefits of reducing reliance on dairy farming, while also developing synergistic brain and gut health ingredients for longevity nutrition.Episode webpage:wilkescenter.utah.edu/podcast/32-lab-generated-lactoferrin-better-for-planet/

For a number of years now, our smartphones have played a central role in many aspects of our lives, from work to personal relationships to entertainment. There's a close and sometimes addictive connection. Just think of doomscrolling for example, which is a phenomenon we've discussed in the past on Do You Really Know. It's a form of behaviour which sees us compulsively scrolling through depressing content on social media platforms like Instagram or TikTok. It can easily end up draining us, leaving us feeling unfulfilled and possibly leading to anxiety or exhaustion. How can I recognise if I'm addicted to my smartphone? What about at other times of the day? What's the best way to get started? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! On today's episode, we sit down with Sarah Kearney, Executive Director of Blue Zones Project Scottsdale, and Todd LaPorte, CEO of HonorHealth, to explore how Scottsdale is taking bold steps toward becoming a longer-living, more connected, and more vibrant community. Website: bluezonesprojectscottsdale.com Instagram: bzpscottsdale BACK STORY With more than 35 years of diverse healthcare experience, Todd LaPorte leads an integrated health system with nine acute-care hospitals, numerous outpatient facilities, a research institute, and various community services impacting social determinants of health and military preparedness. HonorHealth is one of Arizona's largest employers, with a presence throughout much of the growing Phoenix metropolitan area. Since joining HonorHealth in 2001, Todd has held executive roles in which he focused on financial and strategic leadership. He has shaped a system with many access points to provide convenient, high quality care for patients, and with an ability to coordinate care efficiently and effectively. HonorHealth governs with its medical staff one of the country's highest performing ACOs in the country. For most of his twenty years at HonorHealth, Todd served as the CFO. In April 2017, he became the 10th CEO in more than 150 years of its legacy firm history. Before joining HonorHealth, Todd held senior management roles for an international CPA firm that served Arizona healthcare clients, as well as clients in high-tech manufacturing and consumer services. He was also the CFO of a privately held healthcare company that served more than a half million Arizonans. Todd is the current board chair for the Health System Alliance of Arizona, an association of the five largest healthcare systems throughout the State. He is a member of Greater Phoenix Leadership (a CEO advocacy group) and is a board member of Experience Scottsdale (a visitor's bureau). He speaks frequently to Arizona State University MBA classes and community service organizations throughout the Valley of the Sun. Todd was named CFO of the Year by the Arizona chapter of the Financial Executives International in 2012 and was recognized by Becker's Hospital Review as one of the "125 Hospital and Health System CFOs to Know" in 2013. Todd has served as board chair for a chapter of Big Brothers/Big Sisters, the nationally acclaimed Scottsdale Aquatic Club and the Paradise Valley School District's supporting Foundation for Public Education. He holds a bachelor's degree in business from the University of Arizona and an MBA from Arizona State University. His four daughters all swam competitively at four different D-1 schools, so his college sweatshirt collection is quite confusing. Sarah Kearney leads Blue Zones Project Scottsdale as the Executive Director. Her leadership experience is diverse and rooted in community well-being, service, and forward-thinking optimism. She most recently worked for Experience Scottsdale, whose mission is to enhance the Scottsdale community through tourism. In Sarah's 16+ year tenure at the organization, she held several leadership roles and specialized in worldwide leisure sales, partner development strategy, membership and community engagement, program development, and more. Driven by her passion for the Scottsdale community, Sarah has served, led, and guided several local organizations, leaving a cross-sector imprint. She has served as the Board President for Scottsdale Leadership, the Board President for Community Celebrating Diversity, a Board Member for Scottsdale Sister Cities, the Officer of Membership for Millennials in Travel, and the Vice President of Community Outreach at GiGi's Playhouse Phoenix/Scottsdale. Sarah holds an MBA from the University of Phoenix and a B.A. in Communication from Arizona State University. In her spare time, she enjoys traveling, reading, sports and spending time in the Scottsdale sunshine. She is a proud wife and hockey, dance, and dog mom to her two children and golden retriever. Most people need a new toothbrush every three to four months, although there are exceptions when the brush needs to be replaced earlier Toothbrush contamination occurs naturally from biofilm, moisture, and bathroom aerosols, but you can minimize it by rinsing thoroughly after use, storing upright and uncovered, and keeping your brush several feet from the toilet An electric toothbrush head follows the same three-month replacement cycle; replace it sooner if indicator bristles fade, the head feels rough, or cleaning efficiency drops For safe sanitizing, consider soaking the head in 3% hydrogen peroxide for 10 to 15 minutes before air-drying. Avoid boiling, dishwashers, or alcohol-based soaks, which deform bristles and reduce cleaning ability Here's a simple rule to follow: When the bristles splay or smell musty, or if you've been sick, it's time for a new toothbrush
