How I Lost 20 lbs. at Age 50 At 49, I felt something shift. My dad had passed. My kids were growing up and heading off to college. I was inching closer to 50, and I started to wonder: What if I gave myself the gift of health for this birthday milestone - not through pressure or hustle, but through care and consistency? In this episode, I'm not handing you a formula or a list of rules. Instead, I want to share what really happened - what I learned, what shifted, and what it looked like to change in small, 10% ways that actually felt doable. I'll share How I moved from "just interested" to truly committed Why small, consistent actions (like 10 minutes of movement) made the biggest difference What changed in my mindset, and why it mattered more than any meal plan How I lost 20 pounds and gained energy, confidence and peace The powerful role community, coaching, and support played along the way By the end, I hope you'll see what I now know for sure: You don't need a huge overhaul to change your health. You just need one doable step. One new thought. One shift in belief. If you're ready to feel stronger too, more energized, and more at peace in your body and mind, my 10% Healthier program was made for you. Today, I'm speaking with Dr. Bobby Dubois. Dr. Bobby is a Harvard-educated physician, Board-Certified in Internal Medicine with over 25 years of experience. He's an author, entrepreneur, wellness doctor, and Ironman Triathlete. Most recently, he led a health policy research organization in Washington, D.C. (National Pharmaceutical Council) as its Chief Science Officer and Executive Vice President. Prior to that, he served as the Chief Medical Officer of Cerner Life Sciences and co-founded Proto Care Sciences. He's the host of the Live Long and Well podcast and has made it his mission to help others cut through the noise and live longer with more energy as they age. The simple fact is, most retirees and pre-retirees want more time, energy, and independence to enjoy the life they've worked so hard to build. However, the reality is that longevity without good health won't achieve the lifestyle that most retirees envisioned during their working years. In part 1 of this 2-part conversation, we delve into the life-extending benefits of aerobic exercise, the scientific advantages of consistent sleep, and the surprising role of relationships in promoting increased longevity. Dr. Bobby outlines his six pillars of health and explains how to apply them in retirement. And here's the good news: it's never too late to start. In its simplest form, his advice is strikingly similar to what you'd hear from a financial advisor: It's much better to start saving and exercising young, but it's never too late to start. If you want to live not only longer, but better, this episode provides a clear path and roadmap to get there. GET A FREE COPY OF DR. BOBBY DUBOIS' E-BOOK, HOW TO LIVE LONG AND WELL Here's how: Step 1: Subscribe to the podcast and leave an honest rating & review on iTunes. The six pillars of health that drive longevity and overall wellness. Why it's never too late to start strength training and the surprising results from those who start later in life. The importance of a good sleep and tips to make it happen consistently. How sleep clears toxins from the brain and extends healthspan. How to diagnose the placebo effect to know when changing routines is working or not. Why social connection is just as important as diet and exercise. Show Notes: HowardBailey.com/520

The way docs are paid can make patients sicker...or can lead to healthier ones. The payment schemes most docs work under incentivize them to fix patients, while others motivate them to prevent illness—and geriatrician Dr. Jonathan "Nathan" Flacker is here to explain why. This episode rips the curtain off RVUs, fee-for-service traps, and the real reason your doc is rushing through your visit (hint: it's not personal, it's math). We dig into ChenMed's wild idea: what if clinics got paid to keep you out of the hospital? Turns out, when money flows toward health instead of procedures, everyone wins. Except maybe the $400M proton beam facility (for the record, we love proton beams, but you might not need them if you can avoid cancer altogether). Is concierge-style medicine only for the wealthy? What happens when you build “rich person care” for low-income seniors? And how many patients can a doc see well before it all breaks? If you're dreaming of a career where you actually help people instead of just clicking boxes—this one's a wake-up call. Also: Love calls, RVU debt, and why pajama time should be illegal.

When you recognize anxiety, you can navigate it and transform your life from emotional chaos to joy, peace, and purpose. In today's complex world, understanding our mental health is crucial. Feeling anxious or overwhelmed is common, but managing these emotions leads to a happier, healthier, and kinder life. The first step in this transformative journey is to recognize anxiety. Recognize Anxiety for Mental Wellness To truly address anxiety, we must first recognize it. When we bring awareness to our feelings, we can identify triggers and decide how to respond. Often, we operate in a reactive state, which can result in unkind actions towards ourselves and others. Recognizing anxiety helps shift from automatic reactions to thoughtful actions. The Importance of Allowing Feelings Recognizing anxiety is only part of the solution. Allowing yourself to experience these feelings without judgment is crucial. By simply acknowledging anxiety, you reduce its power. Accept it as a temporary state rather than a definition of who you are. Investigate the Roots of Anxiety Once you've recognized and allowed the anxiety, delve into understanding its origins. Ask yourself when these feelings arise and in what situations they are most intense. This investigation is central to therapy and helps uncover the links between past experiences and current emotions. Nourish and Empower Yourself After identifying the source of your anxiety, it's time to nurture yourself. Simple actions, such as breathing exercises, doodling, or engaging in creative activities, can significantly reduce anxiety. These practices foster a calmer state of mind and promote more kind interactions. There are many ways to regulate and reset your nervous system to reduce anxiety. Send us a textDr. Cynthia Clark opens up about the hidden epidemic affecting healthcare environments nationwide: workplace incivility. Drawing from decades of research and practical experience, she paints a compelling picture of how seemingly minor behaviors like eye-rolling or walking away mid-conversation can create serious patient safety risks when they occur in clinical settings. What makes this conversation particularly illuminating is Dr. Clark's nuanced understanding of workplace dynamics. She introduces listeners to her "continuum of workplace aggression" framework, which helps identify problematic behaviors ranging from subtle nonverbal cues to outright bullying and gaslighting. Her explanation of how victims often blame themselves rather than recognizing manipulative behaviors provides a wake-up call for anyone who's experienced that unsettling feeling of questioning their own reality after an interaction with a difficult colleague. The heart of this episode focuses on cognitive rehearsal—a simulation-based technique that transforms how healthcare professionals respond to incivility. Through a practical five-step process, Dr. Clark demonstrates how professionals can prepare for and address difficult conversations rather than avoiding them. Her PAIL framework (Preview, Advocacy, Inquiry, Listen) offers a structured approach that anyone can implement immediately. The example scenario featuring "Iris," a domineering colleague who derails meetings, provides a masterclass in how to approach uncomfortable but necessary conversations.Whether you're a nursing educator, a healthcare professional, or anyone who's experienced workplace tension, this episode delivers practical strategies for creating more respectful environments. Dr. Clark's insistence on calling communication competencies "power skills" rather than "soft skills" underscores their critical importance in healthcare settings where lives literally depend on effective collaboration. This is Part 3 of a three part conversation with Dr. Susan Schneider. Dr.Schneider is the author of “The Science of Consequences”. For the past eight years Dr, Schneider has made climate change her primary focus. Dr. Schneider is on the faculty at Western Michigan University and serves on its Climate Change Working Group. She also serves on the Tools of Change Landmark Peer Review Panel for Climate Change, and on the board of the nonprofit Green Driving America. Now if you are wondering why a podcast about all things equine is talking about climate change, here's the connection. Horses are grazing animals. That means that collectively horse people own, manage, make decisions about a huge amount of land. What we are learning is healthy pastures help to contribute to healthy horses. Healthy pastures also contribute to biodiversity. Healthy pastures come from healthy soils. Improved soil quality absorbs more water which helps to reduce flooding. Healthy soils also sequesters carbon. So horse people can help in the climate change crisis through the way we manage our land. It's one of those win-win-win situations. Healthier pastures are good for our horses which is good for us and it's also good for the planet. I wanted to explore three major topics with Dr. Schneider. The first is where are we now in terms of climate change? Why should we care? The second is what can we do to make a difference. And the third area is how can we talk to others without shutting them down and driving them away? There are lessons to be learned here not just about how do we talk about climate change, but how do we talk about positive reinforcement training when we're surrounded by command-based trainers. In the previous episode we looked at alternatives that don't force people to make the kind of life style choices that mean going without. For example, we don't have to give up driving. We can drive an electric vehicle instead of a fossil fuel car. Choosing the alternative to a gas powered engine means we still get to drive. In this episode we consider actions which horse people in particular are in a great position to take as we consider changes to the decisions we make about the way we manage our pastures. Even if you board and the only land you manage is the lawn around your house, you can take actions that collectively make a difference.

Send us a textOrganic food often sounds like a smarter, healthier choice—but is it really worth the extra cost? In this episode, we dig into the scientific evidence behind organic foods, pesticide risks, and whether you're buying better health or just paying for a better-sounding label. We begin by breaking down the steep price differences between organic and conventional food. According to the USDA, Americans spend roughly $1 trillion annually on food at home, averaging over $3,100 per person. Organic options can increase grocery bills by 50% or more, as LendingTree reports in this price comparison analysis. My own market trip found Fuji apples nearly double in price, and wild-caught salmon more than twice as expensive. But do organics deliver better health outcomes? Most organic foods contain lower pesticide residues, which 85% of Americans cite as a concern. Yet research shows these lower levels don't clearly translate to better health. Rodent studies show harm at extremely high pesticide doses, far above what's found in conventional produce. Human risk data mostly comes from farm workers, not everyday consumers.A 2023 meta-analysis of 50 studies found that organic diets reduced blood pesticide levels and increased plant-derived phenolics, but showed inconsistent results for antioxidants. Cancer data is also mixed. One observational study found no clear differences across 15 cancer types. Another study of 68,000 participants linked organic food with perhaps a 0.6% lower risk of cancer incidence (JAMA Internal Medicine). However, organic eaters also are more likely health oriented (perhaps exercise more, sleep better), so lifestyle may explain the difference—not the food alone.I ran the numbers: avoiding one case of cancer might require 150 people to eat organic, costing about $300,000 in additional food expenses to avoid 1 cancer. And since organic prices may lead families to buy less produce overall, there's a tradeoff. We know from a meta-analysis that increasing fruit and vegetable intake (organic or not) is linked to a 13% reduction in mortality and a 35% drop in cancer risk. That's a far more impactful move.If you're looking for a middle ground, consider using the Environmental Working Group's Dirty Dozen and Clean 15 lists. While not a neutral source, their rankings can help prioritize which foods might be worth buying organic. Washing produce also helps reduce, but not eliminate, pesticide residues.Takeaways:Organic foods have lower pesticide levels but no clear, consistent health advantage. The biggest health gain comes from eating more fruits and vegetables—regardless of whether they're organic. If organic costs limit your produce intake, stick with conventional and focus on volume, variety, and other wellness investments like better sleep or exercise. As always, I'd love to hear what you think. Does this shift how you shop? Let me know—and share this episode with someone navigating the same choice.

The most commonly held narrative states that we're all ultimately responsible for our own health and wellbeing. While there's undoubtedly truth in this idea, the bigger picture shows that the societies we live in and the policies shaped by our governments also play a huge role in our quality of life and longevity. In this episode, we're joined by Devi Sridhar, professor of global public health based at the University of Edinburgh, about her latest book, How Not to Die (Too Soon) – The Lies We've Been Sold and the Policies That Can Save Us. Why don't more big payors in healthcare embrace plant-based eating?
This is Part 2 of a three part conversation with Dr. Susan Schneider. Dr.Schneider is the author of “The Science of Consequences”. For the past eight years Susan has made climate change her primary focus. Her work on climate change and sustainability includes outreach, community projects, organizing, academic and nonacademic publications, and extensive public speaking. As Senior Scientist for the sustainability nonprofit Root Solutions, Dr Schneider helped design projects and coauthored two chapters in its 2022 guidebook, Making Shift Happen: Designing for Successful Environmental Behavior Change. Recent outreach includes a podcast for the Union of Concerned Scientists. Schneider's award-winning book for the public, The Science of Consequences, covers basic learning principles, their role in nature-nurture relations, and their broad range of applications, including sustainability.
