From college football dreams to pickleball excellence, Dorion Brown's journey to becoming head pro at Pickleball Kingdom in Plano, Texas is a masterclass in perseverance, emotional intelligence, and dedicated practice. The second part of our conversation with Dorion dives deep into what transformed a recreational player from Wilmington, North Carolina into a 4.8-rated competitor with professional aspirations. With nearly 56,000 teaching hours under his belt, Dorian shares the "neurological hacks" that have helped him elevate countless players from 3.0 to 4.5 ratings through focused training techniques. At the heart of Dorion's philosophy is a refreshingly humble approach: "Pride always comes before the fall," he reminds us. His emphasis on selflessness extends to his training methodologies, where he advocates for deliberate practice on hitting walls, using sweet spot finders, and understanding your optimal striking zone through concepts like the "one-foot force field." These aren't just technical tips—they're mindset shifts that transform how players approach the game.Particularly fascinating is Dorion's stance on the power versus placement debate. "Placement over power wins," he insists, encouraging players to "live for another shot" rather than forcing high-risk plays. His advocacy for rally scoring during practice creates accountability that traditional scoring lacks, preventing players from repeating the same mistakes without consequences. What truly distinguishes Dorion is how he's woven his faith and values into his coaching approach. The transition from "Team Dorian" to "Team Pickleball Kingdom with Dorion attached to it" reflects a maturity that extends beyond the court. His commitment to the facility's core values—"faith, family, and work"—creates an environment where pickleball becomes more than sport; it becomes community.Whether you're battling the yips with your serve, struggling to find consistency in your dinking game, or looking to take your skills to tournament level, Dorion's insights offer a roadmap to improvement through intentional practice and mindful play. Listen now and transform not just how you play, but how you approach the mental game of pickleball.Want to find out for yourself? Download the Aim7 app today. After four seasons and 60 episodes, Elvis is leaving the building. HR Hardball has been a passion project from the time my first blog post, "First Pitch," posted on July 15, 2012 - you're currently reading post #367, so that passion burned for quite a while. It would be eight years before transitioning to a podcast format, allowing me to have interesting conversations with interesting people throughout the "people" industry, whether that was an entrepreneur, an author, a consultant, or even my own wife it has been a fun ride. But frankly, I'm ready for a change. This season I brought Karen into the mix as co-host and that addition kept me engaged, but it wasn't long before another topic consistently found its way into every interview. Pickleball. As the sport continued to grow, our interest level grew in tandem. The final straw was our interview with the "Pissed & Pickled" ladies, Lori and Missy. These two crack-ups started a podcast about pickleball, we connected via Instagram, and it wouldn't be long before they were chatting with me and Karen about all things pickleball. We didn't know it at the time, but that episode would be the finale for HR Hardball. So we have made the decision to pull the plug on HR Hardball and switch to a new topic (guess?). The new podcast, "Blazing Paddles" will focus on the sport, the players, the influencers and those at the front and center of the zeitgeist of the 2020's.The show will launch this October, and we expect some may choose to opt out but we hope you'll stick around and share the moment with us. With all the nonsense we have been subjected to over the last three years, the one ray of sunshine for many people was this crazy game played with a paddle and a wiffle-ball. Let's talk!HR Hardball, the podcast was launched in October, 2020 to explore the connection between Human Behavior and Human Resources. We officially live in a day & age when "pickleball celebrity" is becoming a real thing. Who woulda thunk it? Three years ago you couldn't draw attention to a pickleball match if you set it on fire, but now???? Now in addition to the professional players and coaches, you have pickleball influencers - which now includes our new friends and current guests, Lori & Missy of the Pissed & Pickled podcast. They come to this place honestly after their friends suggested they take their brand of snark to a podcast, so these self-described "less than average" pickleball players did just that as "Pissed and Pickled" was born. If. you like pickleball and/or you like to laugh, give these ladies a follow on Instagram, subscribe to their podcast, subscribe to their YouTube channel and get notified when new P&P content drops.Put your ears on and have a listen!Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/pissed_and_pickled/YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/@pissedandpickledApple Podcasts - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/pissed-pickled/id1617301783HR Hardball, the podcast was launched in October, 2020 to explore the connection between Human Behavior and Human Resources. One of the nice things about having interesting people on your podcast is that you find products, concepts and/or key learnings of which you may have been unaware. But sometimes it works in reverse - you stumble upon a great product or service and decide "this is too good not to share." We have had previous episodes with entrepreneurs (Ootbox and Storyy for example!) we discovered as potential consumers prior to connecting for the sake of a good podcast episode. This episode with Hannah Mitrea of "Be Eminent" fits the second category. As a content creator I am constantly challenged with providing new and/or interesting content for the listeners, readers, and viewers of our little podcast. This is especially true when you're stretched to capacity managing a career alongside a passion project; whether it's a lack of time or a creative drought, the struggle is real my friends. So when Hannah reached out to me on LinkedIn and claimed to be able to "turn an hour of content into ONE MONTH of content," you could say I was more than a little intrigued. I'm here to confirm that the proof is in the output - I waded into a trial run with Hannah's team and sent the videocast of our interview with Tim Wright, our local pickleball Czar. Within a week I received 10 professionally produced and edited "mini-episodes" each focusing on a key talking point from the episode (listen here). I was blown away. Thanks to the Be Eminent team I had a reservoir of captivating and original content that could be released over the course of 2-3 weeks, all I had to do was plug and play into my social media calendar. And that's just part of what Hannah's team can do - get your ears on and have a listen as we talk about passion projects, start-up businesses, targeted marketing and giving back to the community. In today's episode we have a conversation with Janet Livingstone, founder and CEO of Culture is Key, a consultancy devoted to leadership development, executive coaching and team effectiveness. What makes her model different is the focus on hybrid, remote, geographically and culturally diverse teams trying to build culture in a virtual environment. As many of you have experienced the "black box" of teleconferencing, it can make a difficult process more challenging when you don't have the advantage of observing body language and other visual cues we take for granted.Janet is truly a world traveler and speaks five languages, something that always blows my mind. Lest you think she's another cookie-cutter consultant, she's also very focused on leading with humor, something she utilizes in her own podcasting background (check it out).Get your ears on and give us a listen as we discuss that tricky, fuzzy, amorphous thing called "culture."HR Hardball, the podcast was launched in October, 2020 to explore the connection between Human Behavior and Human Resources. Few people better represent the incredible zeitgeist that is Pickleball. Three years ago Tim was a friendly face we would occasionally run into on the (then empty) public tennis courts that had been re-lined to include pickleball dimensions. Now, he's a local pickleball czar and founder of the Southlake Paddle Club which claims over 700 members.Join us for a conversation about the origins of pickleball (a Washington State native, Tim is one of the few people I know who actually played pickleball in grade school), the revival of the sport during the pandemic years and the immediate future of a game that more than doubled in participants in the last three years and shows no signs of slowing. In fact, North Texas (Farmers Branch to be exact) just announced we will be hosting the 2023 USA Pickleball National Championship at Brookhaven Country Club. Let that sink in - Farmers Branch? (seriously, don't believe the articles mentioning "Dallas"; Flower Mound is to Dallas what Modesto is to San Francisco.) Yup, another California transplant, as the Carvana Professional Pickleball Association (PPA Tour) announced they are moving the championship from Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, California. We got Joe Rogan, we got Elon Musk, and now we got pickleball. So get your ears on let's talk all things pickleball. Just picklin' with Tim Wright.HR Hardball, the podcast was launched in October, 2020 to explore the connection between Human Behavior and Human Resources. Meet Jim Stroud, HR Influencer, podcaster, author, "Searchologist," techie, comic...this guy is one lute away from being a full blown Renaissance Man. In this episode of HR Hardball, we hear Jim's "origin story" (SPOLER Alert, there's a woman involved) into the crazy world of HR and his array of creative innovations over this 20+ year career. Starting as an "Internet Researcher" in 1997 for MCI, Jim found an avenue for his aspiring cinematic dreams within the world of sourcing, recruiting, blogging and podcasting. His latest re-boot of the "The Recruiting Life" is a testament to Jim's creative capabilities. Sometimes an episode names itself. Meet Carol Bowser, J.D., owner and founder of Conflict Management Strategies. Carol, after practicing Employment Law for several years, decided that lawsuits don't often create the level of resolution and satisfaction for the participants. Not only do the employer and employee often become adversarial, the legal representation for both parties are often equally at odds. Working relationships are damaged, sometime irreparably, and the process becomes less about creating a solution and more about zero-sum wins and losses. In this episode we discuss what truly defines active listening and where we oftentimes fail in the process, eventually falling into (here it is) "the sucking vortex of pissed-off." Like I said, some episodes just name themselves. One feature of a great interview is when you find immediate tactics you can put into play and Carol comes through shining in that area. Conflict is almost always a result of poor communication, unaddressed issues, and in a workplace - the disconnect between supervisor and direct report in defining and prioritizing expectations. What are YOU listening for? What are your rules? What are your guidelines? What is bad juju? Put your ears on and actively listen to this episode of HR Hardball.*You can even sign up for a "Conflict Tip of The Day" to continually reinforce this new superpower you are cultivating. Okay Hardballers, this pushed me to the ends of my editorial bandwidth, but with the help of our eldest son Jack, I think we have put together a fun end-of-year recap episode for your enjoyment. Fresh off the news that our little pod made the top 50% of all podcasts via Buzzsprout, we wanted to offer our current listeners a quick trip down memory lane. And for you future listeners, this should give you the overall vibe of the show. Two newsworthy items this year for HR Hardball: I added a new co-host and we identified a new flagship sponsor. Full transparency, I'm sleeping with the co-host, but that seems acceptable after 23 years of marriage. The move developed organically as Karen joined me for a few episodes and the chemistry makes for a better show. You'll notice the new trend in our interviews - everyone just loves Karen and her "great questions." I'm becoming 2nd banana on my own show! Our new sponsor, dink.pro, founded just last year, is the first dedicated pickleball apparel company born and bred in the great state of Texas - btw, if you're not on the pickleball train yet, what in the hell are you waiting for?#bestof #recap #2022Have a suggestion for a guest or topic? How many times do you get a notification on LinkedIn only to find yet another solicitation from a consultant? Annoying at times, it's fair to wonder "does this ever work?" Yep, sometimes it does. My apologies...it's because of these lapses in judgment that we're all forever doomed to this practice. But on this day, Deven Gillen of Storyy offered a glimpse at a product that can not only build your personal brand, it can also help your internal engagement and external credibility. Get all that?So I decide "what the heck" and set up a call. A week later I'm a client. A week after that I'm looking at the first of what will be five videos, professionally edited and produced, then shared on social media channels. The equivalent of an internal digital marketing department, something very few start-ups or small businesses can afford. It's probably no surprise to anyone that video is the new medium standard for influencers. Static images just don't cut it. But the video has to be authentic, consistent and meaningful - that's where Connor (co-founder), Deven, and a global team of creators help you tell your story...uh, "storyy". It can be a bad practice to judge a book by it's cover. No, I'm not talking about the actual book "Blooming; Finding Gifts in The Shit Of Life" , I'm talking about the book's dynamic author Carrington (Carrie) Smith Tabue. Professional, polished and photogenic (and a lawyer to boot!), you might think Carrie grew up in a life of privilege. That would be a huge mistake. In her book, Carrie dispels that theory in the opening paragraph of Chapter 1. The abuse and trauma discussed in this chapter and those that follow don't jibe with the pleasant face you see on the inside cover. It is literally a book you can't put down and another reminder that who we are now likely doesn't reveal the struggles we have incurred in our respective lives. Join us in this special HR Hardball episode with Carrie Smith, founder and President of Carrington Legal Search. Yep, there's that "P word" again...I don't think any of us believe we have seen the complete fallout from two years of social isolation, lockdowns and mandates. Oh, and a novel coronavirus. The numbers aren't encouraging, friends. It's estimated that while 1 in every 4 people struggle with a diagnosable mental illness - only half of those seek help. Whether it's part of the illness, the stigma of asking for help or a lack of resources is inconsequential. The fact is millions of American workers are suffering in silence. Human Resources seems to be particularly vulnerable, as it's estimated that 98% of HR professionals have experienced burnout in the last 6-12 months.Meet Amelia Wilcox, Founder and CEO of Nivati, a company that provides employee stress management tools that arm businesses with tools to address wellbeing, morale, and engagement with employees. Her story is an amazing example of addressing a gap in employee needs, but of a leader who is nimble and unafraid - Amelia's venture previously went from $6M in revenues to ZERO within ten days of the COVID pandemic.Amelia and can assist you in an audit of your company's offering(s) for employees needing the resources that can help them address the mental stress from which they are suffering. Just as important is the ability to discuss these issues with employees, identify the signals, and remove the stigma carried by the term "mental illness."So get your ears on and listen to this episode of HR Hardball.awilcox@nivati.comNivati.comIG - /Nivati_coFB - NivatiCoLI - NivatiHR Hardball, the podcast was launched in October, 2020 to explore the connection between Human Behavior and Human Resources. People will ask me occasionally, who is the audience for "HR Hardball, " is it just for HR professionals? You might be surprised to know that less than ⅓ of HRH subscribers define their role as an HR function. The rest are a mix of entrepreneurs, coaches, recent graduates, and (probably) people like me who are interested in interesting people regardless of their role.Which brings us to Allison Zofan, co-founder of a truly innovative company, OOTBox (www.getootbox.com).Allison has a hell of a story. Like many people in the corporate world, Allison was comfy & cozy in her role with Gartner. A dozen years working with corporate real estate and consulting, she was sittin' in the fabled cat-bird's seat. Her clients included a few heavy hitters including Google, Amazon and Nationwide. The "golden handcuffs" seemed to have her situated nicely. But when approached by a close friend and neighbor about an entrepreneurial idea, not only did she get on board - she quit her cozy comfy gig at Gartner - and this was in October 2019. You may remember that was about the time we started hearing just the beginnings of "COVID 19". That's putting your money where your mouth is, amirite? You know what's tough to do - to leave a good job voluntarily!Good fortune would befall them as well (as it does for the bold) when the product they developed, "OOTBox", became a pandemic sensation because of the applicability. This led to an appearance on Shark Tank where they actually got a deal offer from one of the "Sharks!" This is the American dream based on innovation and determination, we should all be taking notes. So put your ears on and give us a listen; get out of the box and into the OOTBox.www.getootbox.comAllison Zofan - LinkedInOotbox - LinkedIn
Listening to podcasts can be entertaining, educational, informational or entertaining ~ sometimes they are all of the above. Meet Amy Lynn Durham, the creative force behind "Create Magic at Work," a comprehensive assessment, workbook and coaching principle with the goal of supporting leaders to nurture healthy workplaces. For this episode, you may want to keep a pen and pad handy, because Amy is dishing out wisdom bombs throughout the hour conversation. We discuss concepts that are tactical and ethereal, emotional and spiritual, all from the perspective of a certified executive coach trained in EQ (Emotional Intelligence), SQ (Spiritual Intelligence) & a veteran of the grind of telecom sales in her early career.Topics include: Disengagement "Detox", the 21 skills that make up the framework of Spiritual Intelligence, the "Sunday Scaries," the universal rules of communication, the "Hero's Journey," and the distinction between impact and admiration. And for good measure, have a safe word.So sharpen your pencil, be present, get your ears on & give us a listen.
In the 100 or so episodes we've recorded here at Hardball Central, we have a handful of repeat guests - one of them is my inspiring friend Julie Winkle-Giulioni, the evangelist of employee development. Some people talk it, some people aspire to it, and then there are people like Julie who live it.Take a listen as me and the redhead converse with Jules about bad bosses, Millennials, mentorship programs, the dimensions of career development and the importance of providing your employees the opportunity for continued development, professionally and personally. Whether you call it the "Great Resignation" the "Great Reshuffle" or the "Great Pain in the Ass", the hiring market is on its head. As so much attention is paid to the candidate market, we sometimes fall into the trap of focusing more on potential employees than we do the ones we already employ. Retention is the most important dynamic of Talent Acquisition. As I shared with Julie, "You can't cool off the room if all the windows are open."Listen to the expert and let Julie show you the light on this episode of HR Hardball.Julie Winkle websiteJulie Winkle LinkedInPromotions are So Yesterday
In the world of Human Resources, there's no shortage of available content if you're studying the importance of the candidate experience, the onboarding process, and employee engagement. Find the right people, assimilate them quickly and effectively, and constantly seek opportunities to improve or enhance the employee experience. Add to that the "Great Reshuffle" phenomenon, and you have a hiring & retention focus like few times ever before.But...when was the last time you had a strategy session to discuss potential retirees? For that matter, who even discusses "retirement" anymore? Is that still a thing? The days of the gold watch and the pension are now part of nostalgia; formal succession planning is still a critical process, but "Most people spend more time planning a wedding than they do planning retirement." At most companies, the first mention of retirement is when the employee alerts you to the fact and the process of finding a replacement begins in earnest. Donuts in the breakroom, a nice write-up in the newsletter and Bob's Your Uncle. And that's a shame. Did you know there is a 40% increase in depression in the first year of retirement [Institute of Economic Affairs, 2017]? Or that 61% of those in retirement state they mostly/always feel alone [Journal of the American Geriatric Society, 2019]? Suicide rates double, healthcare costs increase and most importantly - "Purpose" is often lost.Meet John Briggs, one of the Managing Partners at Authentica. John and his team have developed a unique program specifically designed to purposefully prepare the retiree for their next phase of life. The program, "Covered Bridge" focuses on an intentional pause (see, there's your title) to prepare the future retiree for life beyond their profession.Get your ears on and give it a listen, won't you? #Hardballer #RideOrDie
What makes a successful entrepreneur? Can you teach this skill set or is it innate in some people that to work for anyone else is a life unexplored. But what happens when the entrepreneurial unicorn has to expand his or her endeavors to include additional people? Can you truly explain the experience to a prospective hire, and if so can you accurately determine if said prospect possesses the qualities needed for your unique role?Heenle Turner is Vice President of Content and Curation for The All In Company, a consulting firm that counsels entrepreneurs on how to recruit, hire, and retain 5-star employees. Join us in a discussion about the importance of the right hire, especially for an entrepreneur trying to grow his or her business. Larger companies can absorb a few mediocre hires, but as an entrepreneur you need to hit home runs with personnel decisions or live to regret it (no promises if your business will make it, however.)How do you become an employer of choice? How do you attract the very best candidates? Are people looking at career options in a different way now than they might have in the past? With the current hiring crisis (see The Great Resignation? Hardly. for a few thoughts on that term) candidates are in possession of leverage they never had previously - how can you take advantage of that while your competitors are struggling?Get your ears on and have a listen, Episode 5 of Season 3....starting now.

Life is good, time to punch the clock and continue with the script.Unless you're Molly McGrath, that is. Molly, at the tender age of 26 decided to take a one-year flyer and explore the potential for a different life in Denver, CO, a place she had never previously been. You know who makes decisions like that? Future entrepreneurs, that's who. With no college degree, no industry experience, no history in the Denver area (but with plenty of chutzpah that comes with being young and unencumbered) Molly found her footing, found her mentor, then found her calling.Listen into a conversation about possibility, the value of mentorship and coaching, and a feel for how you can have that same entrepreneurial mindset guide you in a corporate environment. Tired, aren't you? Would it make you feel better to know you're not alone?Just a year ago we talked to Sarah Moe, Founder and CEO of Sleep Health Specialists about sleep deprivation and the toll it is taking on all of us. At the time we discovered the weird dichotomy of having more time at home (remote work, lockdowns, furloughs) with a decreasing amount of sleep. Somehow we keep getting worse at one of the three pillars of good health (diet and exercise being the other two) even though we're wearing pajamas and sweatpants more than ever in human history.Tara Haelle describes the new normal as "depleted." Not necessarily exhausted or depressed, just tapped out of reserves as we deal with the uncertainty of the times. Pauline Boss, PhD. describes this as a result of dealing with "ambiguous loss", trying to cope with a problem that has no clear foreseeable solution. It's a loss, says Haelle, of our "surge capacity." Dr. Michael Maddaus refers to this as our "Resilience Bank Account" - and it appears we are significantly NSF in that regard. Now, after yet another year of uncertainty a lot of people feel pretty crappy. Luckily for all of us there are simple things we can do to stop that slide into the abyss.Put your ears on and listen to a fun-filled hour of conversation and education as we discuss ambiguous loss, surge capacity, morning wood and K-Complexes.#Sleep #Wellness #SurgeCapacity #AmbiguousLoss #Resilience
By now we've all seen the Supreme Court decision blocking the proposed OSHA ETS Vaccine/Testing mandate. Something HR professionals have been keenly watching for the last several months finally comes to pass. The outcome was (and should have been) predictable ~ the attempt of the Biden administration to use a workplace safety organization to regulate healthcare for roughly 80 million U.S. employees was doomed from the outset. And yet it still had three votes of approval from the Supreme Court, removing any doubts of the political aspect of this particular maneuver.Let's give Biden the benefit of the doubt and presume he (or whoever is really making these decisions) was truly concerned about the health and safety of the American public. For someone like a jaded HR professional, there are a few contrary indicators that might make you doubt that sincere thought:There is no such mandate for members of Congress. There is no such mandate for the thousands of people illegally entering the country. There was no exception made for those with natural immunity. These are vaccines in name only – they do not stop you from getting or transmitting the virus. The cost and administrative burden forced upon employers was an afterthought.oh, and one last thing…it's unconstitutional. Yeah, that silly document that founded our government seems to be selectively applied depending upon who's in charge, but this was a more egregious example than most. Try for a minute to imagine Donald Trump enabling a federal agency (of unelected bureaucrats) to mandate anything. The point? This is not a federal decision folks, it just isn't.But Supreme Court be damned, Biden is still pleading for companies to comply with this plan ~ it's a little derivative now, isn't it?Join me and my red-headed co-host as we discuss the OSHA mandate, the CMS mandate, healthcare in America and we pick the scabs of several festering sores.Gross, right?#OSHA #CMS #vaccine #thejab #WorkAround #SupremeCourt #mandate #Biden
Do I dare say it? "Fake News"? It's a term forever tied to our 45th President but it's not a novel concept. There has been a growing distrust of the media that you can trace back to 1972 when you had military leaders actively accusing the venerable Walter Cronkite of biased journalism that undermined the American conflict in Vietnam. Let's be honest, it goes back even further - one of the more iconic photos of the 20th century is Harry Truman holding up the headlines of the Daily Chicago Tribune which proclaimed "DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN".As long as humans are....human (?) we will have biases that leak into our every being - imagine being a talking head with a vested interest in one side of the story and being tasked with proclaiming the inherent goodness of the other side. Yes it's different for professional journalists, but therein lies a big part of the problem. "Journalists" are a dying breed. Join me and media watchdog Matt Moseley as we discuss the very real problem of a corrupt media.
There are "stories" and then there are STORIES. My friend Daniel Mangena has a one-of-a-kind story to share with HR Hardball. Dan has seen multiple highs, and the very lowest of the lows. This is a guy who at one point was studying on how to better execute a successful suicide (that comes around minute twenty.) Now? Well, now Dan helps others realize the abundances in life of which they are worthy. Changing the inputs, changing our self-dialogue, creating habits and patterns that bring about a healthy and positive lifestyle. For many, the tragedy of this pandemic is the damage to their ability to think rationally. With a constant onslaught of negative messaging and fear-mongering from a corrupt media industry, many have succumbed and surrendered. When fear is framing your life, you lose perspective, compassion, trust, and ultimately a sound mind. We don't subscribe to that mindset at HR Hardball, and neither does Daniel Mangena - get your ears on and listen to some real conversation about mandates, vaccines, media messaging and an overly authoritarian government (not just in the US, check out Austria, Australia, France, Germany, Italy and Canada). Entrepreneur, long-jumper, dad, husband, mentor and mentee. Get your ears on and listen to my interview with Darrian Mikell, CEO and co-founder of Qualifi.Anyone with an entrepreneurial background can relate to the hard work, commitment and risk involved with striking out on your own. Add to the mix three kids and a wife in nursing school and it's fair to think Darrian may have taken on more than is wise to manage, but some people thrive in the chaos while still looking pretty calm on the exterior. With the increased pressure on those in Talent Acquisition to find a limited supply of talent in a market that is actively rewarding the unemployed to remain that way, you need every advantage you can get. Qualifi takes an organizational concept like Calendly and places the onus on the candidate to complete the interview process virtually without the back & forth scheduling gamut recruiters are constantly faced with. Let's do this Hardballers.
2020. A true generational occurrence. Companies were locked down. Employees were sent home. Businesses and jobs were now being defined as "essential" or "non-essential." Government over-reach continued lockdowns and restrictions even today, killing thousands of small businesses and greatly damaging thousands more. What I'm saying is this - while this may have very well been on the employers pre-2020, asking companies to pivot and adjust constantly at the whim of a heavy-hand in DC is an almost impossible task. Agree to disagree? Ok, but give this a listen and let me know if your perspective changes a skosh. Plus the bonus of hearing the sultry tones of the Redhead, worth the listen just for that.#TheGreatResignation #Unemployment #COVID #LetsGoBrandon
It doesn't happen all at once. Instead, one day you wake up and realize that you have accumulated quite a few additional commitments in your professional life. It seems contrary to the narrative of an over-whelmed and sometimes burned out workforce, but there are many people (me included) who aren't thriving if they aren't juggling chainsaws.Meet Jen Hope, a Business and Executive Leadership Coach who leans on more than 20 years of executive experience, business acumen, and empathy to create a safe coaching environment where leaders can grow and thrive. Is that too much to ask? Could we all just agree that humanity is worth saving and that each of us has the power to make a positive impact by starting with the ourselves? Need a little inspiration? Hit it Michael....Meet Debbie and Kate, two long-time collaborators in the pursuit of positive change and first-time authors. On this episode we talk high level about some of the key behaviors needed in our personal development if we want to effect a change. Their book, "Humanity Works Better; 5 Practices to Lead with Awareness, Choice and the Courage to Change" drops on October 26th, 2021 offers the very practical (dare I say "simple?") decisions we can make every day to make a difference in our own lives and in the lives of those around us in the workplace. Their company, Humanity Works (picking up a trend here?) helps leaders avoid toxic work cultures and burnout from employees. If this was already an issue in 2019, think about how magnified those issues are in today's pandemic life. Employees everywhere are voting with their feet as the "Great Resignation" has seen 11.5 Million workers resign in just the last three months (April, May, June 2021). They think that efficiency and productivity need to rank below creating an environment where "good humans" want to work ~ and more importantly, stay. You know a couple years back I wrote an article called "The Lookdown Generation" to describe the experience we had with my then 16-year old son. Well, it turns out I wasn't the only one who noticed this phenomena. In episode 19 (Season 2), I speak with Julienne Ryan, author of the non-economically titled "Learned it in Queens Communications Playbook: Winning Against Digital Distraction: " about the importance of communication in an authentic fashion. "Be real, get results."Now, more than ever, each conversation is like adding to your foundation of trust, brick by conversational brick. Allowing your people to be authentic gives them the freedom to talk openly with you - using active listening, you can identify what "lights up" your employees. No need to write about it, get your ears on and listen to me and Julienne Ryan on HR Hardball.Miss a few episodes? What a great idea...spend a couple of years speaking to leaders around the country and ask them to recall those seminal moments in their respective career which eventually turned into a career-changer.Meet my friend and leadership whisperer Andrea Butcher. On her podcast Being at [Work], Andrea does just that. Going into year three, Andrea has 100 episodes that are a combination of interviews and "Daily Doses" of leadership principles using real stories from real people as they describe the moment(s) in their past which proved to be pivotal. As the President and grand poobah of the HRD Advisory Group, Andrea has been collecting and sharing these principles since 2017 and today she's going to share some of the secrets she's uncovered. In this episode of HR Hardball, we discuss the trends and common themes that weave through these stories. We talk about the term "pivotal moment" - what does that mean? What makes it "pivotal?" Do you realize you're in a pivotal moment in real-time or only in retrospect? Is your moment self-initiated or were you thrust into a situation where action was demanded and it was your response that became your "moment." Must there be risk involved? This special episode was put together at the 11th hour when the OSHA announcement was delivered. Former Vice President Joe Biden announces his intent to utilize OSHA to inspect and enforce a vaccine mandate to all employers over 100 employees. The other option is a weekly negative COVID test. We're discussing the mechanics and feasibility of such an enormous endeavor and do our best to separate the policy from the politics. For instance:What about remote employees? What about the reporting responsibility? What happens when COVID cases still occur in the workplace? Will the "test option" be removed? How does OSHA choose to audit? What is an "ETS" anyway?
