rWotD Episode 2412: Spring Mountain District AVA Welcome to random Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of a random Wikipedia page every day.The random article for Monday, 11 December 2023 is Spring Mountain District AVA.The Spring Mountain District AVA is an American Viticultural Area located in the Napa Valley AVA in California. Spring Mountain District AVA was officially established as an American Viticulture Area in 1993. Encompassed within its bounds are about 8,600 acres (3,480 ha), of which about 1,000 acres (400 ha) are planted to vineyards. Given the small crop yields on hillsides, the region represents less than 2% of Napa Valley wine. Currently the region has just over 30 winegrowers. The appellation sits on steep terraces of the Mayacamas Mountains that separate Napa Valley from Sonoma Valley and the Santa Rosa Plain. It lies in a northwestern portion of the Napa Valley above and behind the town of Saint Helena. The boundaries of the appellation extend from the top of the ridgeline on the western edge, tracing the Sonoma/Napa County border. From the ridgeline the boundaries extend down to the 400 feet (122 m) contour line at the eastern base of the hillside. The southern boundary is Sulphur Creek and one of its tributaries, while the northern boundary is Ritchie Creek. Elevations range from 400 feet (122 m) to 2,600 feet (792 m). The region has a predominantly eastern exposure. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:37 UTC on Monday, 11 December 2023.For the full current version of the article, see Spring Mountain District AVA on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Kendra Standard.

In Episode 86 of the Mr. Wine Guy Podcast I had the privilege of sitting down with my wife Jennifer Gallagher as we shared our thoughts on the Correlation Wine Comapny, 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon out of the Spring Mountain District of Napa Valley, CA by Winemaker, Wesley Steffens. This segment was previously known as my "After Party Pick Of The Week" but after a conversation between Jennifer and I we decided to change the name to "Wine Night Stand, Where Anything Goes." I used to promote Wine Night Stand's when I originally came up with the concept for my Pick of the Week but the meaning behind the name is to love and appreciate wines in the company of family and friends with no strings attached, and no reservations. In Episode 81 of the Mr. Wine Guy Podcast I had the privilege of republishing my interview with David Tate, Winemaker for Barnett Vineyards and Vintner for Tate Wine out of Napa Valley, CA. This Episode was originally Episode 7 which aired July of 2018. David's been making wine for quite some time now, but his journey really began years ago when he flew to Australia with nothing but change in his pocket and took a position in the wine industry in the Barossa Valley. Since then, David's had the privilege of making wine in countries such as New Zealand and France, and currently makes wine in the Spring Mountain District of Napa Valley. David talks about the privilege he has to be the winemaker for Barnett Vineyards since 2007, and how honored he is to be a part of the legacy that Hal and Fiona Barnett have created. David talks about how he's known for making Merlot, considering he produces so much Cabernet Sauvigno,n and how he's bringing Merlot back so to speak, which I couldn't agree more! David also talks about his love for mountain fruit, in particular Mount Veeder, and in particular his personal brand, Tate Wine. One of the things I really enjoy about this episode is how David demonstrates such a willingness to do whatever it takes to make it in the wine industry. His resilience to be successful in all areas of his life including the wine industry really says a lot about him and the character David displays in all facets of his life. I know for a fact that the value you are going to get from this episode is going to be huge so get ready because you are in for a treat! Smith-Madrone is one of Napa Valley’s authentically artisanal wineries, founded in 1971 by Stuart Smith. Winemaking and grape-growing are handled entirely by the two brother-proprietors, Stuart and Charles Smith, iconoclasts known for their staunch adherence to dry farming on their mountain vineyard. Stu’s son Sam Smith is the winery’s Assistant Winemaker. All of Smith-Madrone’s wines come from the 38 acres of estate vineyards surrounding the winery, planted 48 years ago by Stuart and Charles. The vineyards extend across steep mountainsides, at elevations between 1,300 and 1,900 feet, on slopes angling up to 34% at the top of the Spring Mountain District appellation in the Napa Valley. Total production each year is less than 4,000 cases.

This week on The Farm Report, host Erin Fairbanks takes listeners along for a trip to Cain Vineyard & Winery in California. Cradled in a spectacular bowl overlooking the Napa Valley from the crest of the Spring Mountain District, Cain Vineyard & Winery is dedicated to the creation of three Cabernet blends, each drawn from its own unique vineyard sources, each with its own distinctive signature. The conversation with friend Kate Hardwick and winemaker Chris Howell covers topics from precipitation patterns, climate change, scientific research, all pertaining to the Napa Valley, to tracking how the Cain grapes grew last year and chatting about pruning techniques. After the break, Chris shares his personal thoughts on how wine should truly be enjoyed and its relationship with food. Tune in for a very special show! This program was brought to you by The International Culinary Center. “The beauty of wine is that the most interesting wines do reflect the place where the grape vines grow.” “Wines are meant to be drunk and, only in my world I’ll say, with food. Wines are not a cocktail.” “People take wine too seriously! Wine can remind of were the grapes gorw, the eatrt, the soil and ask us to think about our connection to the earth.” —Chris Howell on The Farm Report
