Corner by corner, inch by inch, with one of the greatest tracks in the world. Do Ross and Sam use this episode to dissect their love for the pavement of Road America? Does a Wisconsin bear pope eat beer cheese in the Kettle Moraine woods?(The answer is yes, for the record. Yes to both.)Welcome to the Upper Midwest, cats and kittens. You will learn where the apexes are, if you don't already know. But that's the least interesting part. This show's format rotates weekly, because squirrel. We call this format “Walking the Track.”RELATED TRIVIA: We're missing Jeff for this one—he and the fine gang at AWA Racing just finished 10th at the 24 Hours of Le Mans! (France, for the record, is very much like Wisconsin—also much cheese and beer. No bear pope, though. The species is native to glaciated America.)This episode was produced by Mike Perlman.**Who We Are + Spicy Merch:www.ItsNotTheCar.com**Support It's Not the Car:Contribute on Patreon www.patreon.com/notthecar**Topic suggestions, feedback, questions? Barbra Streisand has been a huge presence in American entertainment—music, film, and stage—for more than sixty years. She was the youngest person ever to achieve the EGOT, winning Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony awards by the age of twenty-seven. At eighty-three years old, Streisand is releasing a new album, “The Secret of Life: Partners, Volume 2.” It's a collection of duets featuring Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, and Seal, along with younger artists including Hozier, Sam Smith, and Ariana Grande. Streisand sat down with David Remnick to talk about the record and the history behind it. Bob Dylan, for one, apparently had a crush on the singer from afar. “We were both nineteen years old in Greenwich Village, never met each other,” Streisand says. “I remember him sending me flowers and writing me a card in different color pencils, like a child's writing, you know. And ‘Would you sing with me?' And I thought, What would I sing with him?” Streisand talks with Remnick about her complicated childhood with her mother, who was jealous of her talent; her dislike of live performance; and the classy way to rebuff a come-on from Marlon Brando.

“They were all standing in front of our big Kenworth, the truck, this monster big American machine. They could have cared less about the Ferrari. They were like… the *truck* is awesome.”That right there is an actual quote from this episode, about actual French people meeting an actual Kenworth tractor-trailer.(Sacré bleu, good buddy!)This episode was supposed to be on another topic and led by Sam. Then Sam got sick and lost his voice (again), so Ross and Jeff kicked out the improv jams—stories from their past, from preparing for the 24 Hours of Le Mans.Conveniently: Jeff is in France right now, prepping to run a Corvette in the race this weekend! This show's format rotates weekly, because squirrel. We look back on an intriguing Shanghai E-Prix double-header in which Maximilian Guenther and Nick Cassidy took surprise wins as mixed conditions again visited Formula E.Sam Smith and Andrew van de Burgt ask whether, despite a relatively poor weekend by his own high-standards, Oliver Rowland now just has to play the percentage game to wrap up the title in Berlin with two rounds to spare next month.Additionally, Cassidy's first win for a year came when The Race broke news of his impending exit from Jaguar at the end of the season. This is explored deeply, as is his victory in wet conditions in China, something on which we gauge Jaguar boss James Barclay's reaction. The tactical masterclass of DS Penske is dug in to as it celebrated a first ever 1-2 in the all-electric world championship, and morale boosting performances from Jake Hughes and Dan Ticktum are also analysed. Just what happens behind the scenes at a big-league pro sports-car race?Answer: Everything! And in this extra-special, audiobook-style INTC, you get… a whole lot of it!Jeff Braun and Sam Smith are two of this show's three hosts. Jeff and AWA were running a car—and Sam was building a show around all of it.Warning: This ep's so big, we broke it into chapters. I was recently trying to remember the first time I met S.D. (Sam) Smith, the creator of the wildly popular Green Ember books. I think it was at a homeschool conference a decade ago, back when I was working at The Colson Center. I noticed that one of the booths in the exhibit hall was crowded with kids and their parents. It was Sam's booth, and the kids were going just crazy in their enthusiasm for Sam's “rabbits with swords,” the heroic and delightful characters who are the stars of the Green Ember books. Since then, Sam's Green Ember books – plus other series that we'll talk about today – have sold more than 1.5 million books. Sam's brother Josiah is a key partner in the cottage industry that the Smiths have created, and his son – also named Josiah – is now a co-writer of the Jack Zulu books. I'm also pleased to say that Sam has become a good friend, so this conversation might get a little free-wheeling. We talk about writing the Green Ember and Jack Zulu books, a kickstarter campaign that has already raised more than $200,000 for a video game based on one of the characters in the Green Ember series, and why he has chosen to stay in West Virginia when conventional wisdom says he might have an easier time of it if he moved to Nashville, New York, or one of the other so-called “cultural centers” in the country. I think you'll find Sam's perspective both encouraging and challenging. We had this conversation via zoom. That brings to a close my conversation with S.D. (Sam) Smith. You can find out more about Sam and his work at www.sdsmith.com. By the way, since Sam and I spoke, his kickstarter campaign has significantly exceeded its $200,000 goal. Congratulations to Sam and his team on this milestone. The producer for today's program is Jeff McIntosh. I'm your host Warren Smith. Until next time, may God bless you.

A race engineer, a driver coach, and a journalist walk into a bar on Memorial Day.“Ow,” says the journalist. (Figures. A typically multi-threaded and all-action Formula E weekend played out in Tokyo with a first ever double-header on the streets of the Japanese capital.Stoffel Vandoorne's ending of his own personal fallow three seasons is analysed, as is Oliver Rowland's seemingly unassailable rise to become Formula E world champion this year after winning his fourth race of the season.Excellent performances by a rare zen weekend for Dan Ticktum and boy winder Taylor Barnard are also covered, while Porsche's Director of Factory Motorsport for Formula E, Florian Modlinger, joins hosts Andrew van de Burgt and Sam Smith to talk over the finer points of TAG Heuer Porsches Tokyo weekend. With added controversy coming via Jake Dennis' black flag, a rash red flag for Maximilian Guenther's DS Penske and a shunt-ageddon weekend for Mitch Evans and Jaguar, there is no shortage of talking points again in The Race Formula E podcast.Get 75% off your first month when you join The Race Members' Club on Patreon today - we even have an F1-only tier! Not always. But often. It's one of the many mysteries of motorsport. Here now, a dive into some of those mysteries! Starring a champion race engineer—Jeff!—and a recovering motorsport journalist—Sam!Some racing mysteries are fun. Some are frustrating. The Cards are a complete team right now and are in every game. Miles Mikolas deserves credit for what he's done this season. Do crowds affect player's mindsets. Arenado enjoying himself.(36:13-43:20) Sam Smith just puts it all in perspective. Jackson would rather the Cardinals play the Tigers than the Yankees in the World Series. Fáilte ar ais chuig eagrán nua de Ar An Lá Seo ar an 19ú lá de mí Bealtaine, liomsa Lauren Ní Loingsigh. I 1978 tháinig George Colley amach ag rá go raibh an stát chun stop a chaitheamh airgead agus go mbeadh am deacair ag gach duine I gceann tamall. I 1989 tháinig an nuacht amach gur chaill níos mó ná 100 míle duine a bpost sna 80dí. I 1989 don chéad uair bhí feirmeoir ón chontae mar sholáthraithe bainne den bhliain. I 2000 bhí gardaí sa chontae ag obair níos mó ar fheachtas sábháilteacht ar bhóithre de bharr go bhfuair níos mó daoine bás ar na bóthair sa chontae sa chéad trí mhí I gcomparáid le 12 mí I 1998. Sin All-4-One le I Swear – an t-amhrán is mó ar an lá seo I 1994. Ag lean ar aghaidh le nuacht cheoil ar an lá seo I 1979 chuaigh ABBA chuig uimhir a haon sa Bhreatain lena albam Voulez-Vous, d'fhan siad ann ar feadh ceithre sheachtain agus bhí sé a cheathrú albam a shroich uimhir a haon. I 1990 chuaigh Madonna chuig uimhir a haon I Meiriceá lena amhrán Vogue. D'fhan sí ann ar feadh trí sheachtain. An plean don amhrán sin ná chun a bheith ar thaobh B ach bhí sé a 8ú huimhir a haon I Meiriceá agus a 7ú sa Bhreatain. Which sectors do they gravitate toward and why do they often have challenges securing funding? Joining Declan to debate all of this are Sarah Austin, Founder & Managing Director of the Lloyds British Business Excellence Awards, and Sam Smith, Co-Founder of Super Scalers.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Landing a job as a pro race driver takes talent, hard work, and a truckload of money.Or sometimes just money. And some people do it for giggles, as a hobby. (You know, like knitting! Just with more Senna inspo quotes.)This show changes formats weekly, because squirrel. We call this ep's format “MY LIFE WITH.” It's where an INTC host tells the story of how they came to understand a complex racing topic over their working life. In this case, that means Jeff, his career as a champion race engineer, and the unique species that is the amateur—a.k.a. “semi-pro” or “pay”—driver in professional motorsport!RELATED TRIVIA: Jeff is currently knee-deep in prep for this weekend's IMSA race at Laguna. Ross is on One Lap of America, hucking around the country in a Civic Type R. And in the most exciting news of all, Sam just got back from the grocery, where he discovered a jam-filled French cookie that tastes almost exactly like a raspberry Pop-Tart.(If you no longer go for gnarly French jam cookie, you are no longer… etc.)This episode was produced by Mike Perlman.**Who We Are + Spicy Merch:www.ItsNotTheCar.com**Support It's Not the Car:Contribute on Patreon www.patreon.com/notthecar**Topic suggestions, feedback, questions? Green Ember friends, you are going to love this one! I had the absolute joy of sitting down with S. D. (Sam) Smith and Zach Franzen to chat about an epic new adventure in the Green Ember universe: Helmer in the Dragon Tomb! For years, readers (including my son Isaac) have been asking for Helmer's origin story — and now it's finally here. Not only will we get a brand-new full-length novel, but Green Ember fans can also also enjoy an action-adventure video game that brings the story to life in a whole new way! And get this: the game is designed to be family-friendly with no ads, no micro-transactions, and no creepy internet people. Just pure storytelling, adventure, and delight for our kids.In this conversation, Sam and Zach share the hospitable heart behind the project, the challenges of creating something this big, and some behind the scenes nuggets true fans of #rabbitswithswords won't want to miss. You'll hear about the creative process, the vision for the story and game, and what makes Helmer in the Dragon Tomb such a special addition to the Green Ember world we already love.Plus, there are over a dozen questions from actual kids ranging from banjos to shading techniques to mysteries and deep dives! We tried to make it rapid fire...but we had a lot to say.
This week's Mixtape Rewind takes us back to our new music mix from October 2022Taylor Swift dominated charts by claiming all top ten Billboard spots with her "Midnights" album – we explore "Mastermind," highlighting how her songwriting prowess continues to evolve while maintaining that distinctive Taylor sound. The musical whiplash continues as we bounce between genres. Flatland Cavalry's folksy "Mountain Song" transports listeners to peaceful natural landscapes, while Sam Smith and Kim Petras deliver the imposing, menacing "Unholy" that marks a dramatic departure from Smith's typical style. Rock veterans make strong showings with Smashing Pumpkins returning to their hard-edged roots on "Beguiled" and Red Hot Chili Peppers honoring guitar legend Eddie Van Halen with their extended six-minute tribute "Eddie."Our exploration reveals fascinating discoveries – from The 1975's "I'm In Love With You" (prompting us to admit we've overlooked their 20-year catalog) to emerging artist Jake Swamp and the Pine's nostalgic "Empty Stomachs and Bloodshot Eyes." It's another “No Dumb Questions!” You email to ask, we sit down to answer. There are no dumb questions in racing … but there might be some dumb answers. In this episode, we take questions from only one listener.Spoiler: That listener is Sam!This was supposed to be a fun little exercise where Sam asked Ross and Jeff random racing questions. Then Sam got a “rager” (his word) case of Covid and was barely able to talk. So he asked Ross and Jeff to read his questions aloud and spent most of the ep quiet.(Except for when he squeaked the squeaker of a little toy bear he borrowed from his daughter. As a sign of approval, or something? Because a Smith man cannot ever shut up, apparently, even when physically incapable of speech.)This show's format rotates weekly, because squirrel. For this episode, we're borrowing the "No Dumb Questions" framework from Ross's old “Speed Secrets” podcast.RELATED TRIVIA: This show was taped a few weeks ago—today, Sam is once again healthy. The bear, however, suffered permanent emotional damage and will never recover. This episode was produced by Mike Perlman.**Who We Are + Spicy Merch:www.ItsNotTheCar.com**Support It's Not the Car:Contribute on Patreon www.patreon.com/notthecar**Topic suggestions, feedback, questions? Race tracks. The road. Fast cars. Slow ones. What do they have in common? Simple: If you're willing to use your noggin-brain, you can figure them out. Maybe. How do you get used to a new car at speed? At one point, Ross and Sam went to the legendary Autobooks-Aerobooks bookstore in Burbank, where they randomly bumped into an INTC listener named Matt. Matt was there to buy one of Ross's “Speed Secrets” books! Hi, Matt! Later, Sam ate a bag of Haribo Star-Mix gummies that had melted from sitting on the dash of Ross's rental car. Mike Hadreas, better known as Perfume Genius, has been making music since 2010, when he released his debut album, “Learning.” Since then, he's become known for writing vulnerable songs that still feel incredibly powerful and danceable. While the cliché is that artists make their best work when they're struggling — or even under the influence of drugs or alcohol — that was not the case at all for Perfume Genius. He joins Tom Power to chat about his new album, “Glory,” which he says feels like a “culmination” of everything he's learned in the years since he got sober and started making music. If you enjoy this conversation, check out Tom's 2023 interview with singer-songwriter Sam Smith on their album, “Gloria.”
