The Southport inquiry - the first phase of which took place in Liverpool this week - heard statements from the families of four girls who survived despite being seriously injured during the attacks on 29 July last year. Debrief alert! INTC co-host Jeff Braun helped run a GT3 Corvette at the 24 Hours of Le Mans this year. To a top-ten finish! In his day job, Jeff is comp director for an IMSA team. We call this format “The Rookie and the Vet.”(For the record, we almost called this episode “Both Sides Now,” a'la Joni Mitchell. That got nixed quick, though, because Sam totally would have sung that song on air, guaranteed, like a dying cat, okay, and no one needs that sort of thing from him, ever.)RELATED TRIVIA: The thing is… I *have* seen La Sarthe from both sides now? From pits to stands, and still, somehow: It's mostly crêpes that I recall. Perhaps I don't know crêpes at all? Tears and fears and feeling proud! To say “I crêpe you,” right out loud! Dreams and schemes and podium crowds—sure, I've loved Le Mans that way. But also, there is in the vendor area occasionally a food truck that will sell you a fresh crêpe at six in the morning, and that sucker is tasty enough to rip your face off.(Mitchell is a good Le Mans vibe, incidentally. Después, Laura Fernández inaugura su versión veraniega de My little corner of the world, una sección pensada para el disfrute pausado y curioso. Escuchar audio
In this episode I had the privilege of interviewing the fashion designer and creative director Harris Reed... and I have to say I was blown away by his vision, his confidence, his charm and his down to earth warmth. Fighting for the beauty of fluidity, half-American, half-British Harris Reed designs to create conversation. Growing up with a strong sense of self, Harris was able to quickly understand the transformative power of clothing and its correlation with identity and liberation. While still studying at Central Saint Martins, he caught the attention of the likes of Harry Styles who he dressed in some iconic looks for his tour including his signature pussy bow blouses and flares. Alessandro Michele, the then creative director of Gucci, spotted him and recruited him to his design studio. His brand has gone from strength to strength showing Demi-Couture collections biannually in London and garnering VIP fans and clients including Beyoncé, Adele, and Sam Smith. The overall DNA of the Harris Reed brand and personal identity, is best described as Romanticism Gone Nonbinary. It puts the wearer and their fluidity - in whatever way it manifests, front and centre yet all while staying true to the brand's ethos that strives for a vision of gender fluidity and inclusivity. Personally, Harris dresses to invite the looks and stares, to blur the preconceived fault-lines people have about gender and sexuality. He is an incredibly striking and magnetic human being. In 2021 he was invited to dress Iman for the prestigious Met Gala... both he and Iman looked spectacular despite a little personal mishap on his way there...too funny and too personal to write about but listen in and you will hopefully laugh with us. In September 2022, aged just 26, he was appointed the youngest ever Creative Director of French fashion house Nina Ricci. He is absolutely flying...In October 2023 Harris married his husband Eitan Senerman in an intimate ceremony in London at Chelsea Old Town Hall and Claridge's... The second wedding celebration in Palermo, Sicily in June 2024, saw Harris in 4 different outfits ... looking ever more spectacular in each one...of course we delve into why he designed each look...and how he wanted to feel...His recently published, beautifully illustrated book Fluid, is well worth a read... Laguna Seca. Nineteen privately owned Mazdas. And one man, lapping all those cars for Road & Track, quietly losing his mind.Car magazines: It's a weird gig.In this episode, Sam relives one of the more unhinged story pitches of his career: A nonstop weekend wrangling 19 wildly different Miatas. Modded and stock. V-8 swaps and K-swaps. Turbo four-cylinders that made everything from hamster power to some 360 hp at the wheels. Plus one car that looked suspiciously like an Ariel Atom... but wasn't.What you get here: another story from Sam's unlikely life in automotive journalism. And a broad, deeply weird, and strangely joyful look at the everlasting appeal of the world's most beloved roadster. This show's format rotates weekly, because squirrel. We call this format “One Rare Day.”RELATED TRIVIA: The Miata was engineered as a love letter to classic British sports cars.

Barbra Streisand has been a huge presence in American entertainment—music, film, and stage—for more than sixty years. She was the youngest person ever to achieve the EGOT, winning Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony awards by the age of twenty-seven. At eighty-three years old, Streisand is releasing a new album, “The Secret of Life: Partners, Volume 2.” It's a collection of duets featuring Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, and Seal, along with younger artists including Hozier, Sam Smith, and Ariana Grande. Streisand sat down with David Remnick to talk about the record and the history behind it. Bob Dylan, for one, apparently had a crush on the singer from afar. “We were both nineteen years old in Greenwich Village, never met each other,” Streisand says. “I remember him sending me flowers and writing me a card in different color pencils, like a child's writing, you know. And ‘Would you sing with me?' And I thought, What would I sing with him?” Streisand talks with Remnick about her complicated childhood with her mother, who was jealous of her talent; her dislike of live performance; and the classy way to rebuff a come-on from Marlon Brando.

“They were all standing in front of our big Kenworth, the truck, this monster big American machine. They could have cared less about the Ferrari. They were like… the *truck* is awesome.”That right there is an actual quote from this episode, about actual French people meeting an actual Kenworth tractor-trailer.(Sacré bleu, good buddy!)This episode was supposed to be on another topic and led by Sam. Then Sam got sick and lost his voice (again), so Ross and Jeff kicked out the improv jams—stories from their past, from preparing for the 24 Hours of Le Mans.Conveniently: Jeff is in France right now, prepping to run a Corvette in the race this weekend! This show's format rotates weekly, because squirrel. We look back on an intriguing Shanghai E-Prix double-header in which Maximilian Guenther and Nick Cassidy took surprise wins as mixed conditions again visited Formula E.Sam Smith and Andrew van de Burgt ask whether, despite a relatively poor weekend by his own high-standards, Oliver Rowland now just has to play the percentage game to wrap up the title in Berlin with two rounds to spare next month.Additionally, Cassidy's first win for a year came when The Race broke news of his impending exit from Jaguar at the end of the season. This is explored deeply, as is his victory in wet conditions in China, something on which we gauge Jaguar boss James Barclay's reaction. The tactical masterclass of DS Penske is dug in to as it celebrated a first ever 1-2 in the all-electric world championship, and morale boosting performances from Jake Hughes and Dan Ticktum are also analysed. I was recently trying to remember the first time I met S.D. (Sam) Smith, the creator of the wildly popular Green Ember books. I think it was at a homeschool conference a decade ago, back when I was working at The Colson Center. I noticed that one of the booths in the exhibit hall was crowded with kids and their parents. It was Sam's booth, and the kids were going just crazy in their enthusiasm for Sam's “rabbits with swords,” the heroic and delightful characters who are the stars of the Green Ember books. Since then, Sam's Green Ember books – plus other series that we'll talk about today – have sold more than 1.5 million books. Sam's brother Josiah is a key partner in the cottage industry that the Smiths have created, and his son – also named Josiah – is now a co-writer of the Jack Zulu books. I'm also pleased to say that Sam has become a good friend, so this conversation might get a little free-wheeling. We talk about writing the Green Ember and Jack Zulu books, a kickstarter campaign that has already raised more than $200,000 for a video game based on one of the characters in the Green Ember series, and why he has chosen to stay in West Virginia when conventional wisdom says he might have an easier time of it if he moved to Nashville, New York, or one of the other so-called “cultural centers” in the country. I think you'll find Sam's perspective both encouraging and challenging. We had this conversation via zoom. That brings to a close my conversation with S.D. (Sam) Smith. You can find out more about Sam and his work at www.sdsmith.com. By the way, since Sam and I spoke, his kickstarter campaign has significantly exceeded its $200,000 goal. Congratulations to Sam and his team on this milestone. The producer for today's program is Jeff McIntosh. I'm your host Warren Smith. Until next time, may God bless you.

A race engineer, a driver coach, and a journalist walk into a bar on Memorial Day.“Ow,” says the journalist. (Figures. The other two were smart enough to use the door.)Is this an episode where we break down and analyze this year's Indy 500 and Monaco Grand Prix? Indeed! Did we do this exact same thing last year? Indeed! This show's format rotates weekly, because squirrel. We call this format “Ripped From the Headlines.”CLARIFICATION: Shortly after this ep was taped, IndyCar announced tech-violation penalties for this year's 500. Not always. But often. It's one of the many mysteries of motorsport. Here now, a dive into some of those mysteries! Starring a champion race engineer—Jeff!—and a recovering motorsport journalist—Sam!Some racing mysteries are fun. Some are frustrating. Regardless, if they're in this episode, we don't have answers for them, and we probably never will. This show's format rotates weekly, because squirrel. We call this format “IT'S NOT THE UNSOLVED MYSTERIES.” RELATED TRIVIA: Sam wrote these words late one Monday night while deep in the fog of A Real Gnarly Migraine. In this episode we look at the topic of female entrepreneurs: why do women make great entrepreneurs, what differentiates them from male founders and what specific support do they typically need? Which sectors do they gravitate toward and why do they often have challenges securing funding? Joining Declan to debate all of this are Sarah Austin, Founder & Managing Director of the Lloyds British Business Excellence Awards, and Sam Smith, Co-Founder of Super Scalers.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
