Picture it: Your scrappy little pro race team has a rough 2024. The next year, out of nowhere, you win Daytona. Then the whole gang takes its first trip to Le Mans and lands a killer finish. The rest of Jeff Braun's 2025 IMSA season was, to quote Jeff, “not that.”This one's a doozy: First, we've got INTC co-host Jeff sharing what he learned in IMSA this year. (Jeff helps run a Corvette in the GTD class, remember.) Second, we've got Sam, who made way too much coffee on tape day. He's a little rapid-fire yappy here, but hey, we're all captives to fate, fly on free bird, fútbol/racing podshow is life, right?Trophies rarely teach you something. But a long, tough season in pro racing just might. This show's format rotates weekly, because squirrel. This fall brings Bay Area residents plenty of options for enjoying the arts from the Castro Theatre reopening with a Sam Smith residency after a two year closure to an exhibit of Witchcraft, Magic, and Occult Knowledge at Stanford. And of course, there are the perennial events like LitQuake, the region's premier literary festival, and celebrations of Oktoberfest, Día de los Muertos, and Halloween. KQED's Arts team joins us to provide recommendations. And, we'll hear from you, what's the fall event or activity you are most looking forward to? More than 150 corners. Twelve point nine miles. History out the wazoo, big fun, big challenge to drive quickly. The Nürburgring Nordschleife is basically the world's greatest race track.Wanna go? Of course you do! How convenient—Ross just got back from there! In this episode, he and Sam discuss that trip, why Ross takes a small group of clients and friends to the Ring every year, and why Sam has had many opportunities to visit the place for work and kept saying no.(Hint: It may be because Sam is a romantic doofus.)Fun fact: This episode was originally going to be about another topic entirely. Then Ross was like, “Oh man, I drove an Aston Martin DB6 in the Moselle Valley,” and Sam was like, “Flugplates Breidscheid Fridge?” And that sounded like more fun, so we called an audible and made a pivot. This show changes format weekly, because squirrel. This episode is about the battleground most of us never even realize we're fighting on: the content we consume. That's right. What you feed your soul matters. Movies, music, social media, every headline, every lyric, every “harmless” show, seeds your heart with life or death. And guess what? Garbage in, garbage out. You can't binge the world's poison and expect to bear holy fruit. The world says, “It's just entertainment.” Jesus says, “Above all else, guard your heart” (Proverbs 4:23). The stakes? Nothing less than your eternity. Will you keep feasting at Hollywood's table, or push back and hunger for the Bread of Life? This isn't a call for comfort—it's a call to spiritual arms. War is raging. What will you do?Buckle up. This one's raw, real, and 100% rooted in truth."Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will." –Romans 12:2Episode Highlights:05:24 - You can't marinate in the world's and then expect to live as a citizen of heaven, period. If your playlist glorifies promiscuity, violence, and greed don't be shocked if you start finding those things appealing. If your favorite shows make adultery, profanity or drunkenness seem normal, don't be shocked when you start seeing sin as no big deal. Romans chapter 12, verse 2 tells us plainly, do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. And yet, despite what I just read, most of us are discipled more by Hollywood than the Holy Spirit.09:31 - I'm going to challenge you to evaluate your media diet as seriously as you evaluate your physical diet. And I'm going to push you to make radical countercultural choices because your soul is on the line. Eternity is on the line. Friends, we can't flirt with the world and be faithful to Christ. It's either one or the other. It's light or darkness. It's truth or lies. And the battleground is what you allow into your heart and mind every single day.13:53 - Disney, Netflix, Spotify, TikTok. They're the new Sunday school teachers. They're catechizing your kids. They're teaching your family what to believe about love, sex, gender, success and happiness. Look at the Marvel and DC universes. Every blockbuster is laced with moral relativism, subtle jabs at biblical truth and celebrations of self over God. Heck, look at the Grammys if you still watch that crap. Performances like Sam Smith satanic themed act in 2023 weren't even hiding this agenda anymore. Look at TikTok influencers glorifying vanity, promiscuity and rebellion while racking up millions and millions of followers. If you think I'm exaggerating, ask yourself why does the average Christian family know more about Taylor Swift's tour schedule than they do about the missionary journeys of Paul? Why can your teenager quote every Marvel superhero but not a single verse from Proverbs? Because we are being discipled not by Christ, but by culture. Connect with Paul M. NeubergerWebsite

In the third episode of this six-part Working Scientist podcast series about career planning, Sam Smith, a behavioral oncologist at the University of Leeds, UK, reflects on his plan as an early career researcher to relocate to the United States and become a professor. Did thing work out as planned?Instead of chasing job titles at defined points in his career to help him achieve his goal, Smith says he focused on winning specific grants that enabled him to do “cool science and solve problems” along the way. But becoming a parent and needing to earn a higher salary led to a rethink. Milicia Radisic, a cell and tissue engineer at the University of Toronto, Canada, left Serbia during the Yugoslav War in the 1990s, motivated in part by problems accessing scientific journals to develop her career expertise.Radisic tells Gould that she now encourages her students to work on both high and low risk projects simultaneously. Having this kind of contingency plan protects them if, say, a high-impact paper in Science or Nature doesn't work out. She also recommends that junior colleagues allocate plenty of time to regularly think about their career path and the direction it is taking. Hosted on Acast. Little ditty... 'bout a race and a Speedway! Two Indy names, growin' up in the heartland. Race gonna make the front page of the Indy Star? Speedway gonna something something… uh... museum... race... car!Yeah, sure, that makes sense! Don't tell me if it doesn't?The story of the first Indy 500 holds a lot of things—death, sand, smoke, around a million blown tires—but it does not hold John Mellencamp lyrics. Still, I hear Mellencamp in my head every time I meet Indiana, so that's what I'm puttin' here.(If you squint, that first paragraph almost fits the rhythm of "Jack and Diane." With apologies to the ol' Cougar himself.)This show's format rotates weekly, because squirrel. This episode is our monthly deep dive into an epic moment from racing history. Remember the time you almost died because your hotted-up old Camarobird got all loose and stabby up at Dead Man's Cul de Sac? Or maybe it was Turn 45 at Laguna Merrica. Either way, there you were, boppin' along like a lap-wreckered Versteppy, when you nearly bought the farm.“She handled like trash that day,” you told the cops/the race steward/that fry cook at Burger Queen. “No idea why.” And the gathered crowd sighed—who hasn't been there?Few automotive terms are as misunderstood as “handling.” What does it mean? Can “good” or “bad” handling be measured, or show up in data? How do non-engineery types talk about this stuff at places like the Indy 500 or Le Mans? Jeff and Sam have answers. In this episode I had the privilege of interviewing the fashion designer and creative director Harris Reed... and I have to say I was blown away by his vision, his confidence, his charm and his down to earth warmth.Fighting for the beauty of fluidity, half-American, half-British Harris Reed designs to create conversation. Growing up with a strong sense of self, Harris was able to quickly understand the transformative power of clothing and its correlation with identity and liberation. While still studying at Central Saint Martins, he caught the attention of the likes of Harry Styles who he dressed in some iconic looks for his tour including his signature pussy bow blouses and flares. Alessandro Michele, the then creative director of Gucci, spotted him and recruited him to his design studio. His brand has gone from strength to strength showing Demi-Couture collections biannually in London and garnering VIP fans and clients including Beyoncé, Adele, and Sam Smith. The overall DNA of the Harris Reed brand and personal identity, is best described as Romanticism Gone Nonbinary. It puts the wearer and their fluidity - in whatever way it manifests, front and centre yet all while staying true to the brand's ethos that strives for a vision of gender fluidity and inclusivity. Personally, Harris dresses to invite the looks and stares, to blur the preconceived fault-lines people have about gender and sexuality. He is an incredibly striking and magnetic human being. In 2021 he was invited to dress Iman for the prestigious Met Gala... both he and Iman looked spectacular despite a little personal mishap on his way there...too funny and too personal to write about but listen in and you will hopefully laugh with us.In September 2022, aged just 26, he was appointed the youngest ever Creative Director of French fashion house Nina Ricci. He is absolutely flying... In October 2023 Harris married his husband Eitan Senerman in an intimate ceremony in London at Chelsea Old Town Hall and Claridge's... The second wedding celebration in Palermo, Sicily in June 2024, saw Harris in 4 different outfits ... looking ever more spectacular in each one...of course we delve into why he designed each look...and how he wanted to feel... His recently published, beautifully illustrated book Fluid, is well worth a read...---A message from our season sponsor: Join the millions of people hitting their weight loss goals with Simple. This episode originally aired in April of 2024.***Once, in the 1990s, an Italian carmaker hadn't gone sports-car racing in 20 years. Maybe they were too busy figuring out new ways to make a 348 catch fire or something. Then some influential folks made a few expressive hand gestures and the Italians agreed to do it—but just this once, and then you gotta vaffanculo, alright?Hold onto your butts: Today, we tell the story of the Ferrari 333 SP, the last purpose-built Ferrari prototype before the Le Mans Hypercar they're running now.Ross raced one of these flying pasta-saucers in IMSA. Jeff engineered them in the same series. The car's 11,000-rpm V-12 came from a Formula 1 car. It's a good story. This show's format rotates weekly, because squirrel. Guts, hot-rodders, and the legendary Carroll Shelby—it's a good one!***In the summer of 1965, a V-8-powered love song from California dethroned Ferrari, shut up the haters, and won America its first FIA manufacturer's road-racing championship. Naturally, almost no one here noticed. The Californian car was a gutsy experiment from a 28-year-old ex-GM designer named Pete Brock. Racing is hard work. Does the perfect driver exist? No. But here now, how the great drivers *try* to be perfect. It's another “No Dumb Questions!” You email to ask, we sit down to answer. There are no dumb questions in racing … but there might be some dumb answers.Topics this week: What are the three most important things a beginning track-day driver should focus on? Producer's note: Our man Alex is still recovering from our recent gathering in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, and will be back to regularly scheduled programming next week. In the meantime, we've bookended the vintage races at Road America with local legends Peter Cunningham and, today, a revisitation of our entertaining 2024 interview with Shelby impresario and all-around rascal Colin Comer.Randy and Alex sit down with Shelby expert, restorer, journalist, author, and frequent BaT seller Colin Comer. “Why did I rob banks? Because I enjoyed it. I loved it. I was more alive when I was inside a bank, robbing it, than at any other time in my life.”That's Willie Sutton, the famous 1930s bank robber. Over a 40-year career in the field of unlawful arts, he personally stole a fortune, at gunpoint, from dozens of financial institutions. He never killed anyone, and he spent more than half his life in prison. Why share these facts now? No reason! This show would never condone illegal acts, and we are TOTALLY NOT SUGGESTING you rob a bank in order to fund another pastime that can, by huge coincidence, also make you feel deeply, wildly, madly alive.(Sponsorship is *so* sexy, though. Let's Take a Moment to FocusFocus matters. But even more important than simply focusing… is focusing on the right thing—or rather, the right One. In a world full of distractions, keeping our eyes on Jesus is essential to walking faithfully with Him. When we focus on Christ, we rise above the crashing waves of life. But when we lose sight of Him, we begin to sink.Join Chris and special guest Sam Smith as they reflect on the power of focus—and what it really means to fix our eyes on Jesus.

The Southport inquiry - the first phase of which took place in Liverpool this week - heard statements from the families of four girls who survived despite being seriously injured during the attacks on 29 July last year. The public inquiry heard testimony from one of the girls' mothers, who said her daughter 'fought like hell' to save herself and others. Anita Rani speaks to Judith Moritz, BBC Special Correspondent, about some of the eyewitness accounts. An exhibition celebrating the life and work of renowned Australian artist Emily Kam Kngwarray opens today at the Tate Modern in London. Respectfully known as ‘the old lady' by her community, Emily didn't start painting on canvas until her 70s. She went on to produce over 2,000 paintings and achieve huge critical acclaim before her death in 1996. Anita talks to art curator Kelli Cole about Emily's often monumental paintings, which were inspired by her life as a senior Anmatyerr woman from the Sandover region of the Northern Territory of Australia.Chief Inspector Helen Tebbit of Cambridgeshire Police joins Anita to talk about her role as senior investigating officer in a rape investigation which resulted in a sexual predator, Craig France, being jailed for more than 10 years - as featured this week in the Channel 4 TV series, 24 Hours in Police Custody.Camaron Marvel Ochs, known professionally as Cam, is an American country music singer songwriter. Debrief alert! INTC co-host Jeff Braun helped run a GT3 Corvette at the 24 Hours of Le Mans this year. To a top-ten finish! In his day job, Jeff is comp director for an IMSA team. From pits to stands, and still, somehow: It's mostly crêpes that I recall. Perhaps I don't know crêpes at all? Tears and fears and feeling proud! To say “I crêpe you,” right out loud! Dreams and schemes and podium crowds—sure, I've loved Le Mans that way. But also, there is in the vendor area occasionally a food truck that will sell you a fresh crêpe at six in the morning, and that sucker is tasty enough to rip your face off.(Mitchell is a good Le Mans vibe, incidentally. Barbra Streisand has been a huge presence in American entertainment—music, film, and stage—for more than sixty years. She was the youngest person ever to achieve the EGOT, winning Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony awards by the age of twenty-seven. At eighty-three years old, Streisand is releasing a new album, “The Secret of Life: Partners, Volume 2.” It's a collection of duets featuring Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, and Seal, along with younger artists including Hozier, Sam Smith, and Ariana Grande. Streisand sat down with David Remnick to talk about the record and the history behind it. Bob Dylan, for one, apparently had a crush on the singer from afar. “We were both nineteen years old in Greenwich Village, never met each other,” Streisand says. “I remember him sending me flowers and writing me a card in different color pencils, like a child's writing, you know. And ‘Would you sing with me?' And I thought, What would I sing with him?” Streisand talks with Remnick about her complicated childhood with her mother, who was jealous of her talent; her dislike of live performance; and the classy way to rebuff a come-on from Marlon Brando.
