New Hampshire Unscripted talks with the performance arts movers and shakers
I love it whenever I get the chance to invite friends into the WKXL NH Unscripted studio! “Ye Merry Gentlemen”, written by G Matthew Gaskell and directed by Sam Smith, is up and running at the Players Ring in Portsmouth Nov. 14 – 30. Knowing absolutely nothing about it I thought it was time to get Mr. Gaskell back into the studio and dissect the production for me. From the promo material: “…This heartwarming new play is a joyful reminder that believing can bring a little magic into our lives… especially during the holidays. A decade after its first production, Ye Merry Gentlemen returns with some of the original script and original cast—now ten years older, and maybe a little wiser. Get ready to laugh, feel, and leave with your heart full.” I know and have worked with about half of the cast and so it was a treat to get to hear about how they've handled his work.

“I just want to see motorsport be as awesome as it can possibly be… can we make this more meaningful? So there's more to care about?”When J.R. Hildebrand says racing is broken, people listen. A few weeks ago, Hildebrand unveiled a discussion project called Blackbird 66. Maybe, he says, the future of motorsport lies in a hella-sexy 1000-horse Indy car with zero downforce. Twist my arm.Hildebrand: 2011 Indy 500 Rookie of the Year, drives a 1960 Cadillac named Rosie. He last hit INTC on Episode 72, when he talked about running a Winston Cup car in the Pikes Peak Hill Climb. Two things the man believes: One, racing thrives on obvious humanity. And two, aerodynamic downforce has ruined competition and should mostly get flushed. He's right about both, you know.(The official answer to the question in this episode's title: HELL YES WE DO.)***LINKS FROM THIS EP: Blackbird 66: https://www.blackbird66.com/JRH on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jrhildebrand/Dan Gurney's 1979 White Paper: https://legacy.allamericanracers.com/wp/formation-of-cart-dan-gurney/This show's format rotates weekly, because squirrel. Send us a textJoin Cheryl Lee - That Radio Chick on STILL ROCKIN' IT for news, reviews, music and interviews with some of our favourite Australian musiciansA seven-year-old writes a song to survive the schoolyard, and that melody becomes a map. We sit down with Jordan Anthony to trace the line from first piano lessons in Perth to The Voice at fourteen, to a last-minute airport call that sent him to Junior Eurovision, and finally to an American Idol audition that reshaped his future. It's a story about momentum, but more than that, it's about the mindset that lets momentum become mastery.Jordan opens up about how reality TV can be a catalyst if you define your why, how standing beside world-class vocalists forced a leap in technique, and how a bout of illness before an international final turned into a lesson in grit. We unpack the call from producer Paul Clarke, the backstage talk with his dad, and what it felt like to step onto a world stage with an original song, “We Will Rise.” Then we fast-forward to LA: producer calls at 1am, an audition in Katy Perry's hometown, collaborations with Ajii on “Cherry,” and the quiet daily work that turns attention into a career. At the heart of the conversation is “Hurt Me Sooner,” Jordan's new single shaped by his first breakup. He takes us inside the lyric—those intrusive thoughts after love ends, the reflex to label time as wasted, and the steadier truth that growth needs friction. You'll hear how influences like Adele, Sam Smith, Lewis Capaldi, and Ed Sheeran inform his tone without swallowing his identity, and why this track finally feels like him. Between sessions and shows, he stays grounded with soccer runs, FIFA, and family FaceTimes, and shares plans to reset at home before the next surge. If you're chasing a creative dream, this one brings practical insight and real heart: use pain as material, treat opportunities like training, and build a support system that keeps you human. Stream the full conversation, share it with a friend who needs a nudge, and leave a review to help more listeners find stories like this. What has Jordan Anthony been up to lately? Let's find out!Get out when you can, support local music and I'll see you down the front!!Visit: ThatRadioChick.com.au

How did Ross and a young Kimi Räikkönen end up sharing a fancy London apartment? After 20 years of testing fast cars for a living, which one still makes Sam misty? What really went wrong with Ross's IndyCar career?Answers to these questions—and more!—in this episode. Probably! Yes!Every so often, INTC does a listener Q+A show. We call that format “NO DUMB QUESTIONS.” This isn't that. This is Ross and Sam running a weird almost-gameshow and answering uncomfy questions from each other under pressure. ***IN THIS EP: Ross and Kimi — A brake line bursting open in 70-mph L.A. traffic — Ross's favorite street cars (and why) — How balance is the only thing that matters — a 289 Shelby Cobra — The time Ross watched a Concorde take off from the cockpit of a 747 on final approach — and more! This show's format rotates weekly, because squirrel. In this episode, Heather sits down with young adult career coach Sam Smith to talk about one of the most universal human experiences—uncertainty. Sam works with 20-somethings who feel paralyzed by big life decisions. Together, Heather and Sam explore why uncertainty is normal and necessary, how faith and trust in Heavenly Parents reframe our need for certainty, and why our divine identity matters more than our labels. Sam offers three concrete tools to move from fear to action and explains how building confidence in uncertainty translates into real-world courage for job interviews, big decisions, and everyday life. Jimmy Kite crashed four times—four!—trying to qualify for the 1998 Indy 500. The story of how he finally made the show holds bad luck and trashed cars but also a hidden concussion, a giant fireball, an airborne gearbox, and a fat dose of can-do spirit. Plus: INTC co-host Jeff Braun! Jeff was Kite's chief engineer that year. So we brought Jimmy onto the show and asked him and Jeff to tell the whole tale.Kite was a 22-year-old sprint-car kid from Missouri who came up on dirt and had just been crowned 1997 USAC Silver Crown Rookie of the Year. We've driven nearly all of 'em. Almost every road model, plus some of the great race cars—a 934 and 935, RSRs, a Daytona-winning Sixties 2.0-liter. Not to mention the extended family, like a Le Mans-winning Rothmans 962, a few 959s, Jerry Seinfeld's 1964 “Butzi” car, the list goes on.Why do people love (and hate) the Porsche 911? Are the great ones worth the money? Can a reasonable person grow to love a good 911 if they don't much like the things to begin with?Cliché questions. W/C 13th October 2025I very rarely do this, but I have picked a song I don't know just because the title works for the episode.Anyway this is Gavin James, and I have to admit I actually quite like the song. It sounds very familiar, quite a bit Newton Faulkner-y. Anyway he's an Irish chap and has been on the go since 2015. He's opened for Sam Smith and Ed Sheeran and he has also produced an album called Winter Songs which I am definitely going to seek out (after all you know how I feel about winter albums).Stay safe.Tired - Gavin JamesTherapy For Me (or TFM as I now refer to it) is a bit of an audio curiosity. It started out as a mechanism for me to clear my head, with the hope that by saying stuff out loud it would act as a little bit of self-help. It's remains loose in style, fluid in terms of content and raw - it's a one take, press record and see what happens, affair. If you want to keep in touch with TFM and the other stuff I do then please follow me on Facebook, Insta, Twitter or Patreon. Thanks for getting this far.
IndyCar is a gnarly old series, and 2025 was one of the sport's gnarliest seasons. So we asked the one and only Marshall Pruett to break it all down—own the mic, spit Palou truth, don't hold back.(That's Pruett's secret—he never holds back.)Select Pruett bona fides: decades of paddock reporting for RACER, ESPN, and Road & Track. Hosts the Marshall Pruett Podcast, which you should totally check out. Also, he's on a first-name basis with Chip Ganassi's lawyer.Select IndyCar gnar, 2025: Scandals! Lawsuits! Chevrolet and Penske face-plants! Plus a mild-mannered Spaniard somehow nuking the entire field from orbit to land his fourth consecutive title in a way no one thought possible.Plus, Pruett calls Sam names and orders Jeff a sandwich in this one. Picture it: Your scrappy little pro race team has a rough 2024. The next year, out of nowhere, you win Daytona. Then the whole gang takes its first trip to Le Mans and lands a killer finish. The rest of Jeff Braun's 2025 IMSA season was, to quote Jeff, “not that.”This one's a doozy: First, we've got INTC co-host Jeff sharing what he learned in IMSA this year. (Jeff helps run a Corvette in the GTD class, remember.) Second, we've got Sam, who made way too much coffee on tape day. He's a little rapid-fire yappy here, but hey, we're all captives to fate, fly on free bird, fútbol/racing podshow is life, right?Trophies rarely teach you something. Irish singer-songwriter Gavin James returns with his highly anticipated fourth studio album, Goldrush, was released on 19th September. The 13-track record is structured in two distinct halves, divided by an interlude: one brimming with upbeat, high-energy anthems, and the other showcasing a more intimate and vulnerable side. Speaking about the new project, Gavin says: “This album has been two years in the making, and it's the first time I've fully thrown myself into the production side of things — which was an amazing learning curve. The opening track, Goldrush, felt like the start of something new I'd been searching for. The record has all the bells and whistles I love as a producer, but also the raw, imperfect moments that make it feel truly human.” Since bursting onto the scene in 2015 with his debut album Bitter Pill — featuring hits such as The Book of Love and Nervous — Gavin James has established himself as one of Ireland's most successful musical exports. His 2018 album Only Ticket Home produced the multi-platinum single Always, which went diamond in Brazil, while his collaboration with Alan Walker on Tired has surpassed 270 million Spotify streams. His 2022 release The Sweetest Part further cemented his reputation as a world-class artist. Across his career, Gavin James has amassed over 2.5 billion global streams, toured with Sam Smith, Ed Sheeran, and Niall Horan, and headlined sold-out shows worldwide.
More than 150 corners. Twelve point nine miles. History out the wazoo, big fun, big challenge to drive quickly. The Nürburgring Nordschleife is basically the world's greatest race track.Wanna go? Of course you do! How convenient—Ross just got back from there! In this episode, he and Sam discuss that trip, why Ross takes a small group of clients and friends to the Ring every year, and why Sam has had many opportunities to visit the place for work and kept saying no.(Hint: It may be because Sam is a romantic doofus.)Fun fact: This episode was originally going to be about another topic entirely. Then Ross was like, “Oh man, I drove an Aston Martin DB6 in the Moselle Valley,” and Sam was like, “Flugplates Breidscheid Fridge?” And that sounded like more fun, so we called an audible and made a pivot. This show changes format weekly, because squirrel. This episode is about the battleground most of us never even realize we're fighting on: the content we consume. That's right. What you feed your soul matters. Movies, music, social media, every headline, every lyric, every “harmless” show, seeds your heart with life or death. And guess what? Garbage in, garbage out. You can't binge the world's poison and expect to bear holy fruit. The world says, “It's just entertainment.” Jesus says, “Above all else, guard your heart” (Proverbs 4:23). The stakes? Nothing less than your eternity. Will you keep feasting at Hollywood's table, or push back and hunger for the Bread of Life? This isn't a call for comfort—it's a call to spiritual arms. War is raging. What will you do?Buckle up. This one's raw, real, and 100% rooted in truth."Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will." –Romans 12:2Episode Highlights:05:24 - You can't marinate in the world's and then expect to live as a citizen of heaven, period. If your playlist glorifies promiscuity, violence, and greed don't be shocked if you start finding those things appealing. If your favorite shows make adultery, profanity or drunkenness seem normal, don't be shocked when you start seeing sin as no big deal. Romans chapter 12, verse 2 tells us plainly, do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. And yet, despite what I just read, most of us are discipled more by Hollywood than the Holy Spirit.09:31 - I'm going to challenge you to evaluate your media diet as seriously as you evaluate your physical diet. And I'm going to push you to make radical countercultural choices because your soul is on the line. Eternity is on the line. Friends, we can't flirt with the world and be faithful to Christ. It's either one or the other. It's light or darkness. It's truth or lies. And the battleground is what you allow into your heart and mind every single day.13:53 - Disney, Netflix, Spotify, TikTok. They're the new Sunday school teachers. They're catechizing your kids. They're teaching your family what to believe about love, sex, gender, success and happiness. Look at the Marvel and DC universes. Every blockbuster is laced with moral relativism, subtle jabs at biblical truth and celebrations of self over God. Heck, look at the Grammys if you still watch that crap. Performances like Sam Smith satanic themed act in 2023 weren't even hiding this agenda anymore. Look at TikTok influencers glorifying vanity, promiscuity and rebellion while racking up millions and millions of followers. If you think I'm exaggerating, ask yourself why does the average Christian family know more about Taylor Swift's tour schedule than they do about the missionary journeys of Paul? Why can your teenager quote every Marvel superhero but not a single verse from Proverbs? Because we are being discipled not by Christ, but by culture. Connect with Paul M. NeubergerWebsite

In the third episode of this six-part Working Scientist podcast series about career planning, Sam Smith, a behavioral oncologist at the University of Leeds, UK, reflects on his plan as an early career researcher to relocate to the United States and become a professor. Did thing work out as planned?Instead of chasing job titles at defined points in his career to help him achieve his goal, Smith says he focused on winning specific grants that enabled him to do “cool science and solve problems” along the way. But becoming a parent and needing to earn a higher salary led to a rethink. Milicia Radisic, a cell and tissue engineer at the University of Toronto, Canada, left Serbia during the Yugoslav War in the 1990s, motivated in part by problems accessing scientific journals to develop her career expertise.Radisic tells Gould that she now encourages her students to work on both high and low risk projects simultaneously. Having this kind of contingency plan protects them if, say, a high-impact paper in Science or Nature doesn't work out. She also recommends that junior colleagues allocate plenty of time to regularly think about their career path and the direction it is taking. Hosted on Acast. Little ditty... 'bout a race and a Speedway! Two Indy names, growin' up in the heartland. Race gonna make the front page of the Indy Star? Speedway gonna something something… uh... museum... race... car!Yeah, sure, that makes sense! Don't tell me if it doesn't?The story of the first Indy 500 holds a lot of things—death, sand, smoke, around a million blown tires—but it does not hold John Mellencamp lyrics. Still, I hear Mellencamp in my head every time I meet Indiana, so that's what I'm puttin' here.(If you squint, that first paragraph almost fits the rhythm of "Jack and Diane." With apologies to the ol' Cougar himself.)This show's format rotates weekly, because squirrel. This episode is our monthly deep dive into an epic moment from racing history. Remember the time you almost died because your hotted-up old Camarobird got all loose and stabby up at Dead Man's Cul de Sac? Or maybe it was Turn 45 at Laguna Merrica. Either way, there you were, boppin' along like a lap-wreckered Versteppy, when you nearly bought the farm.“She handled like trash that day,” you told the cops/the race steward/that fry cook at Burger Queen. “No idea why.” And the gathered crowd sighed—who hasn't been there?Few automotive terms are as misunderstood as “handling.” What does it mean? Can “good” or “bad” handling be measured, or show up in data? How do non-engineery types talk about this stuff at places like the Indy 500 or Le Mans? Jeff and Sam have answers. The INTC gang is on a short break, so we're dishing up an encore presentation of some of our favorite stories! This episode originally aired in April of 2024.***Once, in the 1990s, an Italian carmaker hadn't gone sports-car racing in 20 years. Maybe they were too busy figuring out new ways to make a 348 catch fire or something. Then some influential folks made a few expressive hand gestures and the Italians agreed to do it—but just this once, and then you gotta vaffanculo, alright?Hold onto your butts: Today, we tell the story of the Ferrari 333 SP, the last purpose-built Ferrari prototype before the Le Mans Hypercar they're running now.Ross raced one of these flying pasta-saucers in IMSA. Racing is hard work. Does the perfect driver exist? No. But here now, how the great drivers *try* to be perfect. In the form of an audiobook-style excerpt from INTC co-host Ross Bentley's best-selling “Ultimate Speed Secrets” book!(Bonus: Stories from Bentley's coaching past!)This show's format rotates weekly, because squirrel. We call this format “INTC BOOK CLUB.” Is this a real book club? No. Think of it as a strange but unexpectedly entertaining audiobook that you bought by accident at a random truck stop long before podcasts existed, except there are no week-old hot dogs under a radioactive heat lamp, the CB radios are definitely not on sale, and you can't take a number to reserve a shower that smells like pickled gym shorts.(Note: We are not suggesting you need a shower. Travel hygiene is a personal choice, and you smell great anyway! Whatever your soap-adjacent habits, we support you!)This episode was produced by Mike Perlman and Sam Smith.**Support It's Not the Car:Contribute on Patreon www.patreon.com/notthecar**Who We Are + Spicy Merch:www.ItsNotTheCar.com**Topic suggestions, feedback, questions?
