Here are some key steps for building a moat into a startup: Network effects -- grow the network within your customer base to strengthen the business. Design the product and the marketing to connect others to the customer base. Platforms -- design a platform into the solution offered. A platform brings reduced cost and greater capabilities versus one-off products. Integrate with partners -- use APIs and other technical connections to create a seamless solution for customers. Integrations add value and are difficult to compete against. Bundle products -- package several services into a single product. Through bundling, one creates a better solution that appeals to a broader audience. Long-term sales contracts -- signing long-term contracts provides a moat. Customers who want to switch will find it costly, and competitors will get tired of waiting for the customer to come back to the table. Proprietary data -- data that is unique to the business adds value. Unique data can be mined for additional products and services. Brand -- build a brand that provides a unique promise to the customer. Brands take time to build but can provide an additional moat for the company. The American consumer is being misread. Surveys say people are panicking, but their behavior tells a completely different story. From historic lows in consumer confidence to AI-generated buyers to an entire generation betting on prediction markets, the picture is not one of collapse. It is one of reinvention. So get your mind in a different place, and hey ho, let's go.   Record Low Consumer Sentiment Is a Category Creation Engine The University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index dropped to 44.8 in May, the lowest reading ever recorded, following what was already a record low in April. Yet unemployment is near zero, GDP is growing, and the stock market keeps hitting new highs. The numbers do not add up because the survey is measuring something different than economic health. It is measuring the death of an old life script. The linear path of college, marriage, house, promotion, and retirement no longer delivers the meaning it once promised. People are not curling up in a ball. They are buying fewer cars, skipping packaged foods, and trading stuff for experiences. When an old script breaks, people are forced to find meaning on their own terms, and that search is historically the most powerful category creation engine the economy has ever seen.   The Synthetic Customer Will Scale Mediocrity If You Let It Research shows that AI-generated synthetic customers can replicate roughly 90 percent of real conjoint study outcomes, including which features drive choice and early price sensitivity. Companies like Target and US Bank are already testing products on synthetic audiences before launch. The technology is genuinely exciting and could transform how businesses plan, build, and compete. The danger is that most companies will point their synthetic customer tools at the fat part of the bell curve, optimizing for the average buyer and calling it an insight. Eddie Yoon has spent decades proving that the super consumer, roughly 8 to 10 percent of any customer base, can drive up to 90 percent of gross margins. Synthetic customers are only as powerful as the data they are trained on. Train them on average, and you simulate mediocrity at scale. The unlock is running synthetic studies on super consumers first, then non-consumers, and finding where those two extremes could meet. That intersection is where new categories are born. Proprietary data sets and purpose-built AI applications will separate the companies that discover the next wave from the ones that simply made the status quo slightly cheaper to produce.   Gen Z Is Not Irrational, They Are Responding to Real Data Roughly 32 percent of Gen Z investors have played prediction markets, a similar share are in crypto, and about 69 percent of Polymarket accounts have lost money since 2022. On the surface this looks like recklessness. In context, it makes complete sense. This generation grew up through 9/11, the 2008 financial crisis, and Covid, all before they could legally drink. Every institution that promised safety failed at least once during their formative years. The Nasdaq 100 returned roughly 21 percent annually over the last decade. The S&P returned 13 to 14 percent. Sitting still in an index fund would have made them wealthy. But when certainty has detonated repeatedly, patience does not feel safe, it feels naive. The speculation is not stupidity. It is a rational response to a world where the old guarantees proved hollow. The prescription from Eddie Yoon is to hold all three investment buckets at once: a boring cash safety net covering 3 to 18 months of expenses, smart index-based investments with consistent long-term returns, and a smaller speculative position built on genuine expertise and category-level knowledge. Speculation itself is not the enemy. Speculating without a superpower, without real edge, is where the damage gets done. AI may be the hottest topic in healthcare, but most organizations still aren't ready to use it at scale.  In this episode, host Sandy Vance chats with the CEO of Hart, Dominique Gross. Dominique shares how building a semantic data layer is helping organizations unlock their data, scale innovation safely, and move from pilot projects to real enterprise impact. In this episode, they talk about: Many healthcare organizations are eager to adopt AI, but they struggle to scale beyond pilot programs due to foundational data challenges. The most immediate barrier to innovation is simply gaining access to all relevant data across fragmented and legacy systems. Data quality is just as critical as access, as organizations must normalize and clean their data before it can be used effectively. Legacy electronic health records often contain valuable historical data, even if organizations are hesitant to use it due to inconsistencies. Patients ultimately benefit when their full medical history is accessible, rather than only recent encounters. HART has developed a semantic data layer that acts as a “translation system” across different EHRs, enabling consistent data use. This approach allows organizations to aggregate, migrate, and stream data more efficiently across dozens of systems. One health system successfully scaled from connecting a small number of affiliates to centralizing more than 60 data sources over time. The same organization was able to complete a major EHR migration in under 12 weeks by extracting, normalizing, and preparing data for a new system. Proprietary data models within EHR systems create significant barriers to interoperability and data portability. Despite increasing regulation and improved standards, accessing complete and meaningful data remains a challenge across vendors. Market consolidation is likely to continue, as organizations seek fewer vendors that can handle multiple data needs. Clinical research remains an underutilized opportunity, with many organizations still relying on manual processes to identify eligible patients. Improving data accessibility could dramatically accelerate patient recruitment and engagement in clinical trials. Simple improvements in data completeness and standardization can have immediate impacts on reimbursement, efficiency, and patient care. This is called data currency, which the industry players use for data exchange. Extensive use of the data by many companies creates a de facto standard. Proprietary data. This data comes from a unique source that no other company has access to. Exclusive access to data In this case, the company has developed an exclusive arrangement for the use of data. Proprietary data exhaust This is the use of data from another source for a different purpose. For example, Whole Foods captures consumer product good sales data and then sells access to CPG companies that want to know how much is sold in each category. We discuss the Chamberlen family and their forceps, which were kept secret for generations and brought into birth rooms concealed in ornate boxes to protect their design. What did it mean for a potentially life-saving instrument to be privately controlled? And how did the protection of medical knowledge influence the shift of birth from midwives and community care into the hands of surgical practitioners? We also explore how obstetrics transitioned from guild-style secrecy to standardized and regulated medical practice. As forceps became more widely available, childbirth changed clinically and culturally. HT2321 - Proprietary RAW vs DNG I'm not a fan of proprietary file formats. It seems to me that they have a way of putting our content at risk. I'm not comfortable with that. Instead, I use the open source DNG format for my working images in my Lightroom catalog. I do keep, however, all the original RAW camera files on backup hard drives just in case a future generation DNG converter adds features that I might find useful.
