Meet Kitty Norton In 2016 Kitty left her job as an NBC assistant editor in Los Angeles, CA, for her hometown of Portland, Oregon, to walk, stumble, crawl with her mother, Gloria, living with vascular dementia, to death's door. While doing so, she authored the caregiver blog Stumped Town Dementia, writing tales of dementia life, not dementia death, which resonated deeply with readers around the world. After her mother's death in 2021, Kitty created and directed Wine, Women, & Dementia to honor this journey with her mother, to spread awareness of the caregiver side of the equation in the swinging dementia lifestyle, and to celebrate family caregivers - to let them know they are not alone, and that they are worthy of being seen and respected alongside their dementia person on this difficult road to the end of life. Empowering Through Writing: Kitty talks about starting her caregiving blog as a creative outlet to process her experiences and connect with other caregivers, emphasizing the blog's growth into a supportive community. Exploring the Caregiver's Perspective: The conversation delves into the creation of her documentary, which aims to highlight the often-overlooked struggles and resilience of family caregivers dealing with dementia. Therapeutic Power of Creativity: Kitty reflects on the therapeutic benefits of writing and filmmaking, not just for personal catharsis but also for helping others navigate similar experiences. Humor and Coping: Throughout the interview, Kitty underscores the role of humor in coping with the daily challenges of dementia caregiving, bringing a light-hearted perspective to difficult situations. Influence of Community and Culture: She shares insights into how cultural shifts, including the proactive voices of millennials and baby boomers, are changing the narrative and support structures for dementia. To sit with Emilia is like sitting with the Queen...but somehow even queen sounds almost diminutive for her role. Makes her sound like she is sitting on a throne handing out directives. Nothing could be further from the truth. When you visit Napa, you cannot help but be struck by the magnanimous structures and opulent wineries. This is not the case when you drive to Silvio Nardi in Montalcino. Quite the opposite. A 17th century building with understated details houses this humble and elegant winery. Emilia is that too; humble and elegant. After the tour, she sat for lunch and took the time to explain in further detail the history and the vision of Silvio Nardi wines. Have a listen to this woman of Montalcino.

As two women in the wine industry, what better topic for us to tackle than “Women in Wine”?!  Special guests include Lindsey Koch and Benedicte Rhyne who share their passion for wine and how they embraced their natural female skills and talents to make their way in the traditionally male oriented world of wine.  Meet Lindsey:  Lindsey started her career in Fort Worth, TX as a medical staffing agency before launching her own staffing company, Embracing her interest in wine she studied to become a certified Sommelier, she took the big leap of faith to start her own wine bar, WineHaus from the ground up.  After  8 years, she sold the business to a previous customer as she made the move out to Sonoma County, California to further her career in wine. Living in California Wine Country, Lindsey is currently the Estate Director for Small Vines Wines in Sebastopol, managing everything from marketing and customer outreach, to curating bespoke tasting experiences at the winery. Additionally, Lindsey and her husband always dreamed about starting their own winery and made the dream a reality, starting Curves & Edges Wines during the 2020 vintage. She focuses her efforts at Curves & Edges on two varieties that have always brought her great joy, Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot. Meet Bénédicte: Bénédicte (Bennie) Rhyne is a native of Aix en Provence, France. She received her master in oenology (the study of wine) from the Université de Bourgogne (Dijon), had a successful experience at Chateau Pétrus, in Pomerol, Bordeaux, before global adventures to New Zealand and England landed her at Ravenswood Winery in Sonoma, California, as a member of the winemaking-team. Here she developed a”Meritage“program increasing the winery's production ten-fold between 1991-2001. Additionally she created a sophisticated wine laboratory with well -trained staff and quality control procedures. In 2002, Bénédicte and her family moved to Fredericksburg, TX and created a Wine Laboratory to compliment her Wine Country Consulting business.  Bénédicte served sixteen years as the winemaker of Mesa Vineyards, St. Genevieve Wine in Fort Stockton, Texas. She the spent 10 years as the winemaker of Kuhlman Cellars, a quickly growing winery whose door's opened in October of 2014 in Hye, Texas to produce fine quality and “Terroir” driven wines from Texas in the style of her native Provence.  Bennie is now focused full time on her wine consulting and launching her own wine label - stay tuned!Show Sponsors:> The Magnolia in Fort Worth> The Texas Wine ClubDon't forget to FOLLOW, LIKE, COMMENT, SHARE and let us know any topics you'd like us to cover!Cheers! A few weeks ago, Emily led a discussion on her Substack that got . . . well, a little attention. It was about alcohol—the expectations we have around it,  the “wine mommy” marketing, what we use it for (to celebrate, to cope) and how that might change (or not!) moving forward. There were so many thoughtful conversations in the comments, Emily thought, Why not ask my own Simplified women about this? She brought Liz and Laura in for their takes around some scientific research and their own personal experience. There aren't any big prescriptions or takeaways here—just some interesting observations.    ***A note as you listen today: please know this is a judgment-free zone. This topic has a lot of different angles. You may even have strong feelings about what we talk about. That's okay! Life is filled with things that aren't black and white. Navigating the World with Your Aging Loved One
The Road Trip that Connected the Dementia Caregiver Community with Kitty Norton, Filmmaker of "Wine, Women, & Dementia"

Navigating the World with Your Aging Loved One

"One thing is for sure: no one plans on being a dementia caregiver when they grow up," said Kitty Norton, a filmmaker and director of "Wine, Women, and Dementia". Her first feature film, a documentary reveals the profound burden that family caregivers shoulder as they care for their loved ones with dementia. This burden includes isolation, financial strain, and physical and emotional exhaustion that affect both the caregiver and the care recipient.   Kitty Norton, a former family caregiver to her mom, decided to embark on a cross-country RV journey to visit five other caregivers who she had formed a close bond with through their shared experiences. Despite having only interacted online, their in-person meeting allowed them to share deeply personal and humorous stories about their lives as caregivers. Through their stories, the documentary "Wine, Women, and Dementia" provides a raw and honest portrayal of the realities of caring for someone with dementia, including both the challenges and moments of beauty. Ultimately, the film celebrates the themes of perseverance, devotion, and the importance of finding joy in the difficult journey of caring for a loved one with dementia.   In an interview, Kitty and I talk about her inspiration behind the film, what motivated her to create a space for caregivers to feel acknowledged, how we can come together through our common experiences and emotions as caregivers, and how storytelling helps caregivers feel connected to each other and build a sense of community. We also discuss the challenges and barriers that caregivers can face when they seek support, how caregivers can be encouraged to live out loud and share their stories and experiences with others, and how it benefits our caregiver community. We look at how the film industry can better represent the experiences of caregivers, and all the details about filming, including what it was like meeting everybody for the first time and where the journey took them.   This film is a true representation of what an estimated 16 million unpaid dementia family caregivers go through. Kitty says it has been a "road trip connecting a disconnected community because until there's a cure, there's community". Thank you, Kitty, for making this film, for your honesty, your humor and for persevering to see this vision come to life!   Learn more at https://www.winewomenanddementia.com/   *This episode is brought to you by Gigi Betty co. Lisa is an amazing woman who has created a unique business that combines wine, women friends, and wellbeing through networking and community. Learn more about her story! In France, there is a beautiful city near the Spanish border named Pau, where the amazing woman whom I interviewed decided to spell out entrepreneur in a way that would help women find friendship, laughter, empowerment, and inspiration. Canadian expat mom Lisa has enjoyed connecting with different people throughout the four continents she has lived and knew that there was a space she could create for entrepreneurial-minded women to connect, so she started her own business, Wine Women and Wellbeing. Wine Women and Wellbeing is a unique business that combines Lisa's love of good wine, good women friends, and wellbeing through networking and community. Through her hard work and dedication Lisa's business has been a huge success in her homeland of Canada and now her new home of France! Listen to my interview with episode 44 guest, Lisa, on living in various countries with her husband and children, creating a business abroad, how she and her family have made a home abroad, and what home means to her. Canadian expat mom Lisa, a Canadian expat mom, has found it to be such a lovely experience relocating with her husband, and kids from Canada to Indonesia, Democratic Republic of Congo, and currently France, and detailed her experiences living abroad on her blog https://www.canadianexpatmom.com/ (Canadian expat mom). Being a Canadian expat mom has its challenges, but it can also be an incredibly rewarding experience. On the one hand, you have to deal with the feeling of being homesick, missing the place you are originally from, being away from extended family and friends. No matter how great your life is in your new country, there will always be a part of you that longs for the familiar comforts of Canada. But on the other hand, https://arewehomeyetpodcast.com/moving-to-a-new-country-the-first-things/ (living abroad) gives you a unique opportunity to raise your children in a different culture. They'll learn about new customs and traditions, and they'll have a chance to develop skills that they wouldn't have otherwise had. Plus, you'll get to create precious memories with your kids that will last a lifetime. Ultimately, being a Canadian expat mom is both challenging and rewarding. Wine Women and Wellbeing Lisa certainly knows how to spell entrepreneur, and that's with her business Wine Women and Wellbeing. Wine, women, and wellbeing – it's a winning combination! Wine has been shown to have countless health benefits, including reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke, boosting cognitive function, and even prolonging life. And what could be better for your wellbeing than spending time with good friends? Women have always been powerful social connectors, forming bonds that last a lifetime. So when you combine the health benefits of wine with the social benefits of spending time with women friends, you're on the path to optimum wellbeing. So pop open a bottle of your favorite red or white, gather your girlfriends, and toast to your good health! Lisa describes herself as an extrovert and she enjoys making friends wherever she goes, so it came easily and naturally for how to end up building a business abroad, one involved in making friends. Lisa has put in sweat equity, building her business over 3 years, and has seen the tremendous difference that it's made in the lives of the members. Woman can network and are part of a community As indicated on the Wine Women and Wellbeing website: Most recently, Lisa brought together thousands of women across three provinces for the Manifest Tour featuring Kaitlyn Bristowe, Dr. Jody Carrington, Jess Tetu, and The Sister Brand. WWWB's inaugural WILD Conference held in Calgary featured keynote speaker Elizabeth Gilbert, and was curated toward bringing together entrepreneurial-minded...
