Full Text of ReadingsFourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Lectionary: 101The Saint of the day is Blessed Emmanuel Ruiz and CompanionsBlessed Emmanuel Ruiz and Companions’ Story Not much is known of the early life of Emmanuel Ruiz, but details of his heroic death in defense of the faith have come down to us. Born of humble parents in Santander, Spain, he became a Franciscan priest and served as a missionary in Damascus. This was at a time when anti-Christian riots shook Syria and thousands lost their lives in just a short time. Among these were Emmanuel, superior of the Franciscan convent, seven other friars, and three laymen. When a menacing crowd came looking for the men, they refused to renounce their faith and become Muslims. The men were subjected to horrible tortures before their martyrdom. Emmanuel, his brother Franciscans and the three Maronite laymen were beatified by Pope Pius XI in 1926. Reflection The Church in Syria has known persecution throughout its history. This week we dig into the results of our emotional intelligence tests! Moral to the Story: Not everyone thinks like you. Other Fun Topics Discussed: Get To Know Us: we talk about childhood songs. Tamu blows Mallory away with the disco version of "C is for Cookie" off of Sesame Street Disco Fever. Mallory remembers the racist version of "This Land is Your Land" from junior high school. We can't help but feel we broke our lovely EQ coach, Hannah. #WePodcastLikeThis with Dave Matthews' Dreaming Tree Wine with the hard to read poem. Mallory's amazingly high EQ scores would be even higher were it not for her life challenges last year, but things are on the up! Tamu's optimism score is 45, because this world is a piece of shit. Mallory realizes she has mental health privilege. Getting the results was nerve wrecking. Mallory's version of flexibility is not being a doormat. Tamu is optimistic for everyone except herself. Question of the Day: How do you become optimistic in a shitty world? You cannot have a perspective in reality & be optimistic, you are lying to yourself. Scores reflected the environments that Mallory & Tamu grew up in. Mallory talks about her mom's insane optimism that leeched into her psyche which is positive -- even if she doesn't see it that way. Mallory saved a jumper's life. MMMBop has lyrics! Note to Dave Matthews: We don't understand you! Mallory's family issues have gotten better but, when it comes to dating relationships, she has to work on trust.  

Stat: The penguin population in Punta Tombo, Argentina, has declined by 43 percent since 1987. Story: Not all of those birds are dying: Many are relocating to areas with more prey—a move aided by their ability to swim 170 kilometers a day—and 200,000 breeding pairs remain in Punta Tombo. But expert Dee Boersma, known as the Jane Goodall of penguins, says the decline may foretell worrying trends in the ecosystem. Host Dan LeDuc sits down with Boersma, and hears from a few of the penguins, to learn more.
