EPYSODE 87: Where Did The Sunshine Go by The Glass Cage. Guests: Norm Roth, Marcus Pollard and Jason Flower. Additional commentary by my twin brother Maurice. This week we explore Where Did the Sunshine Go, a long-lost psychedelic and garage rock recording by The Glass Cage. Originally recorded in 1968, the songs sat unheard for decades, surviving only on rare acetates until their recent rediscovery and reissue in 2026. Featuring raw fuzz guitar, cool vocal harmonies, and the vibrant energy of a band at the height of the late '60s psychedelic wave, Where Did the Sunshine Go is both a snapshot of its time and a thrilling listen for modern psych and garage enthusiasts. This epysode dives into the making of the recordings with one of the original band members and the unbelievable story of how archivists resurrected the tapes for modern ears. This is an incredible story from start to finish and at the heart of it all is some truly unbelievable music. I hope you dig Where Did The Sunshine Go? as much as I do. - Farmer John ===CONNECT & SUPPORT=== Transport yourself into the realm of grooviness by supporting us on Patreon for as little as $2/month using this link --> patreon.com/FarmerJohnMusic Follow Vinyl Relics on Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, X and BlueSky. This summer at the New York Botanical Garden, visitors are invited to bask in peace, love, and psychedelia of the hippie culture of the 1960s and 70s, symbolized so strongly by flowers. Flower Power opens to the public on May 23 and runs through October 18. Patrick Nowak, NYBG's Manager of Exhibition Operations, discusses what visitors can expect from the show, ranging from archival photos and paintings from the 1960s, and of course a variety of psychedelic flower displays. Welcome back! This week we continue from last week's extension with Colin Wilson's The Occult, and his interesting perspective on what these heightened states are, how they are achieved and maintained, as well as some notable characters associated with the topic. We also question why this area of research is so rife with charlatans and fakes? As always, make of this what you will, but Wilson really makes a great case for all of it. Welcome to your Plus+ Extension, and thank you for joining us on Plus+! This is a weird, wild realm we have here, riddled with strange happenings in the sky. High strangeness is intimately interwoven with everyday-ness. Today, we examine a smattering of seemingly unconnected events, accounts, and perspectives of some of the most bizarre encounters by some day-to-day dwelling, normal folks just living out their lives and then, suddenly…Whammmy, they are visited by the freaky, and it woos them into further investigation. Epysode 76: Roger The Engineer by The Yardbirds. Additional commentary by Uncle Herff. Step into the groundbreaking world of the album most commonly referred to as Roger the Engineer. Often overshadowed by the band's popular hits, this record is a masterclass in British blues-rock, garage energy, and early psychedelia. Featuring the electrifying guitar work of Jeff Beck, this album captures the creative explosion of mid-60s London. In a year that featured a long list of incredible albums, we explore why this one stands proudly among the best 1966 had to offer. Whether you're a long-time fan, a vinyl enthusiast, or discovering The Yardbirds for the first time, this epysode provides a rich, immersive journey into a pivotal 1966 release that continues to inspire musicians and collectors alike. EPYSODE 73: Shanti, by Shanti. Guest: Shanti guitarist Neil Seidel. Additional commentary by Uncle Herff. This week we explore Shanti, the self-titled 1971 album that stands as one of the great crossroads records of the West Coast counterculture. While other bands dipped their toes into Eastern music, Shanti went all-in. Guitarist Neil Seidel joins us with exclusive commentary, reflecting on the band's formation, its musical philosophy, and the creative environment that shaped the record. Together, we revisit an album that is equal parts jam-session, spiritual statement, and time capsule from an era where East and West merged. I hope you dig Shanti as much as I do. - Farmer John ===CONNECT & SUPPORT=== Transport yourself into the realm of grooviness by supporting us on Patreon for as little as $2/month using this link --> patreon.com/FarmerJohnMusic Use this link to follow us on Facebook --> https://www.facebook.com/farmerjohnmusic/ Use this link to follow us on Instagram --> https://www.instagram.com/vinylrelics/ Use this link to follow us on TikTok --> https://www.tiktok.com/@vinylrelicspodcast Use this link to follow us on BlueSky --> https://bsky.app/profile/farmerjohnmusic.bsky.social And find us on X @VinylRelicsPod Email me @ farmerjohnmusic@gmail.com ===LINKS=== Check out all of Neil's work (music and written) here: https://neilseidel.com Fransisco Lupica interview from 2017:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tvFDqZHbSMM The lone existing video of Shanti performing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hWR8NrdKVi8&list=RDhWR8NrdKVi8&start_radio=1 ===THE MUSIC=== Songs used in this Epysode, in order of appearance. The Strange Brew - artist stories behind the greatest music ever recorded
In 1968, a group of Luton apprentices started creating a rock opera. Chris Stokes and his band Genesis (not that Genesis) conceived a concept album with baroque piano arrangements and experimental passages, then packed it away and got on with their day jobs. For over 50 years, this album and other material spanning a decade, existed only on deteriorating tape and acetates. Chris recorded with various lineups from the mid-1960s including The Mantis Set, Genesis, and Sunday Painter, mostly at home on a Revox tape machine; self-financed, largely improvised, never properly released. Then Dimorphodons from Hand of Glory Records bought a battered Hohner keyboard on eBay for £10, heard a sample track, and discovered a treasure trove of lost British psychedelia. Chris and Dimorphodons share highlights from this incredible archive, with the bulk of these tracks heard in public for the first time. Here we are at the end of another year. I won't pretend it was wonderful....part of it was downright horrible to be honest. Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut, two things made me happy – the kindness of some people and wonderful music. Love That Album is all about the music. Welcome to episode 190 of Love That Album. As long time listeners will know, at the end of most years, I like to reach out to some of my music loving and musically articulate friends to chat about what music excited them that year. The emphasis is on music discovery – some of it may be have been released but some of it may be 50 years old. As long as it's new for my guests, that's all that matters. I now present for you the 2025 edition of this tradition. Joining me for this year's discussion are: - Shane Pacey. Shane is part of the LTA furniture at this stage. Discussing music with him is always a treat. He's the front man for both the Bondi Cigars and the Shane Pacey Trio. He's a great musician, sure, but he's a passionate advocate for music history and a great raconteur in that regard. Check out his music at either https://shanepaceytriomusic.bandcamp.com/ or https://bondicigars.com/ - Farmer John (aka John Couture). Farmer John is the host of the superb Vinyl Relics podcast dedicated to the history of (mostly) obscure bands from the late 60s / early 70s rock era. He discusses albums with musicians who didn't always get their day in the sun but should have. Psychedelia, hard rock, pop and folk are his passions. He's also a guitarist and songwriter for a great band called Newport Electric. Get Vinyl Relics wherever you get podcasts, and find his music at https://www.newportelectricmusic.com/ - Brian Nankervis. In Australia, Brian needs no introduction....but for the rest of you, Brian is most famous for being the co host (with Julia Zemiro of Rockwiz) – previously a TV program (which yours truly had 15 minutes of infamy on), now a live touring show. Brian is indeed a rock music brain. He also hosts a weekly show on the ABC in Melbourne with Jacinta Parsons, The Friday Revue. - Jeff Jenkins. Jeff is a music journalist and has been writing a weekly column called Howzat for many many years, as well as writing books about Molly Meldrum and Skyhooks. He also is a regular guest on RRR's The Australian Mood with Neil Rogers. JJ was also the very first guest to be a part of LTA 14 and a half years ago, back when most people didn't even know what a podcast was. You can read his articles at http://www.livinginthelandofoz.com/howzat.html I'm truly grateful for these marvellous musical folk for giving me their time and great conversations. In the off chance you were interested in what some of my favourite discoveries were this year, I have recorded solo segments I play in between my chats with my guests giving 3 albums that gave me pleasure this year – there were many more, but I didn't want this to be a 10 hour show. If you've listened to an episode this year or sent me a correspondence or posted in the Facebook group to have music discussions or recommended LTA or See Hear Podcast to your friends or have been a guest on the show, I offer my gratitude to you. If you've been enjoying the show, please consider giving us a favourable review on whatever podcast platform you listen on and let your friends know that our show exists. This week it's the Captain's Birthday! How does Robert want to celebrate his annual trip around the sun??? With a heavy dose of rocket-powered SPACE GRUNGE!!! Back in Ep. 283's Space Rock episode, we heard the term “Space Grunge” to describe a band called Astronomie. Robert loved it and said that's what he wants for his Birthday. Kevin scoured the galaxy to find other examples of this sonic assault, somewhere between space rock, stoner metal, grunge, and alternative metal! Come blast off and have a blast with us!What is it that we do here at InObscuria? We exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. EPYSODE 53: "If Only For A Moment" by Blossom Toes. Guest: Blossom Toes guitarist Jim Cregan. Additional commentary by Uncle Herff. This week we dive deep into "If Only For a Moment " (1969), the cult-favorite psychedelic rock masterpiece from Blossom Toes. Joining us is guitarist Jim Cregan, who shares rare, behind-the-scenes stories about the making of the album, the band's evolution from baroque pop to heavier rock, and how the record fits into the late-60s psychedelic movement. Whether you're a long-time fan or discovering Blossom Toes for the first time, this conversation brings new life to one of the era's most overlooked albums. I hope you dig "If Only For A Moment" as much as I do. - Farmer John ===CONNECT & SUPPORT=== Transport yourself into the realm of grooviness by supporting us on Patreon using this link --> patreon.com/FarmerJohnMusic Use this link to follow us on Facebook --> https://www.facebook.com/farmerjohnmusic/ Use this link to follow us on Instagram --> https://www.instagram.com/vinylrelics/ Use this link to follow us on TikTok --> https://www.tiktok.com/@vinylrelicspodcast Use this link to follow us on BlueSky --> https://bsky.app/profile/farmerjohnmusic.bsky.social And find us on X here --> @VinylRelicsPod Email me here --> farmerjohnmusic@gmail.com ===THE MUSIC=== Songs used in this Epysode, in order of appearance. Lonnie Pena and I talk Anthologies 1-3, the previous video releases, and fun with Disney+. We follow with thoughts on the last twenty years of "Revolver" and "Sgt. Pepper". Rolling Stone Magazine has had Pepper on a bit of a downward trajectory (it was "the greatest album of all time in 2003"), while Revolver has maintained a higher standing. Why? Was it the standardization of the catalogue? CDs? Streaming? Psychedelia? All this and more... #madeonzencastr.

Tosh Tudor is one of the most watchable surfers on the planet right now. He is the bubbly, happy-go-lucky frothing progeny of the great Joel Tudor, and has carved out his own niche as one of the most stylish tube riders on the planet. His combination of old and new school board design, and surfing style, has been a revelation. In this episode, we riff on California's psychedelic-infused counterculture surf origins, board design, tube technique, the influence of his parents, and much more. Some people are just born to be in front of a mic, blessed with such charisma, cultural intellect, and communication prowess. That immediately makes listeners hang on their every word. That's the kind of guy who is joining us for the 200th episode of The Rap Music Plug Podcast, none other than Richmond Virginia's own, $ilkMoney. $ilk's commanding mic presence, impossibly malleable flow, and artistic vision has made him one of rap's rising stars from the moment he burst on to the scene as a member of Divine Council. Now firmly in the spotlight as a solo artist, he's given such dense rewarding work, album after album, and has outdone himself with his latest opus, WHO WATERS THE WILTED GIVING TREE. In this episode, we discuss recent comments he's made about Tyler, the Creator and André 3000 that have caught some attention, his free-form psychedelic approach to rap, and the inspiration behind his electric and deeply thoughtful new album. Also, I'd be remiss not to share a quick thought about this milestone of 200 episodes. Because as much as I've run this thing as a one-man show… I did not get here alone. I wouldn't be here without the patrons whose kind support and engagement in the RMPP community have powered me through many nights burning the midnight oil brainstorming or editing an episode. I wouldn't be here without all the artists who trusted me to discuss their work and points of view. And I wouldn't be here without everyone who's ever listened to even one episode of this show. I've had the opportunity to have real conversations with people who I feel make some of the greatest art I've ever heard. It's been an unexpected journey so far, and a legitimate dream come true. This is my baby, and I'm blessed to share their 200th day of existence with $ilkMoney, who made for one of the most entertaining episodes ever on the RMPP. I hope you enjoy. Thank you so much. The Plug (0:41). The Interview (3:09). $ilkMoney's non-music interests (4:22). The inspiration behind $ilk's unique song / album titles (9:37). $ilkMoney on his recent comments towards Tyler, The Creator and André 3000 (16:17). How rap gave $ilkMoney gave him a sense of purpose (25:22). Maintaining creative freedom and authenticity in the music industry (29:35). $ilk's desire to be ‘as free-form as possible' in rap (34:35). Psychedelia in $ilk's art (38:30). $ilkMoney's viscerally elastic flow and songwriting (44:54). How the idea of ‘the giving tree' inspired $ilkMoney on his new album (53:31).
TODAY on the show we started off with some sports talk and also talked about what we were gonna be getting up to over the weekend. We did some leftover LaTOT ratings. Lastly we had an awesome talk with Actor and Musician Corey Feldmen! MONDAY on the show we announce our Sports Picks winner! He's a musician too.400:00:15,000 --> 00:00:17,000Let's say actors. - Right there.500:00:17,000 --> 00:00:19,000It's a good song, Cory.600:00:19,000 --> 00:00:21,000Hey guys, thank you very much. Appreciate it.700:00:21,000 --> 00:00:22,000I hope you're enjoying it.800:00:22,000 --> 00:00:24,000So you like a Beatles freak?900:00:24,000 --> 00:00:27,000Well, I don't know about a freak, but I'm definitely a Beatles fan.1000:00:27,000 --> 00:00:30,000Yeah.1100:00:30,000 --> 00:00:33,000I mean, I haven't hung out outside any of their apartments or anything like that.1200:00:33,000 --> 00:00:36,000I haven't gotten that far, but yes.1300:00:36,000 --> 00:00:37,000I've grown up on the Beatles.1400:00:37,000 --> 00:00:41,000I certainly was influenced heavily as you can tell by the Beatles.1500:00:41,000 --> 00:00:43,000So that was my childhood.1600:00:43,000 --> 00:00:47,000And then as I became a teenager, I went through my pop phase,1700:00:47,000 --> 00:00:51,000you know, listening to Michael Jackson and Madonna, and Cindy Lopper and all the stuff that was on in the 80s.1800:00:51,000 --> 00:00:56,000And then I got back to Psychedelia, you know, with the Beatles and Pink Floyd and all the other people.1900:00:56,000 --> 00:01:00,000And Pink Floyd and all that kind of stuff when I hit, you know, my teens.2000:01:00,000 --> 00:01:02,000And that was kind of my re-inspiration.2100:01:02,000 --> 00:01:05,000And from that point, I took a deep dive and I got very into them.2200:01:05,000 --> 00:01:16,000So in celebrating my 50th year in entertainment, I thought, what better way to do it than with a song that kind of, you know, encapsulates what my experience was.2300:01:16,000 --> 00:01:22,000And also talks about the characters that I've been throughout the years, but also the characters that we all play in each other's lives.2400:01:22,000 --> 00:01:27,000And we're coming in and out of each other's lives. We play various roles. We play different parts for each other.2500:01:27,000 --> 00:01:30,000And different people play parts for us, you know.2600:01:30,000 --> 00:01:33,000So it's all part of the ongoing fabric of life.2700:01:33,000 --> 00:01:36,000Lex plays the part of the dick on our show.2800:01:36,000 --> 00:01:38,000Well, I'm sorry to you, Lex.2900:01:38,000 --> 00:01:43,000No, don't be, it's the most fun role I've ever had.
Do you recognize the name, Owsley Stanley? If you're not a devoted Dead Head, probably not. But he's the guy who met the Dead when they had just formed, supplied them with LSD, and helped them form their psychedelic, jam band sound. He also supplied LSD to hundreds of thousands, if not millions of others hippies. It was his LSD that would truly fuel the counterculture movement of the late 1960s. The Summer of Love wouldn't have been nearly as magical as it was without Owsley's mind-expanding psychedelics. He was one-of-a-kind, and I hope you enjoy learning about his life as much as I did. Welcome back, folks! This week I'm doing an episode that I feel like I probably should've done a long time ago -- but everything comes in due time, and here it finally is! Two and a half hours hashing out outers-space through the lens of philosophy, alchemy, and metaphysics. Diving into topics like the symbolism of outer-space from ancient to modern day; the possibilities and pros/cons of colonizing other planets; whether or not human survival for any deep length of time in space is possible; the history of Operation Paperclip and Warner Von Braun and the extremely dark legacy this paints on our space pursuits as a human culture; Jack Parsons and the history of NASA through Jet Propulsion Labs, including all his weird sex magick, his hang-outs with L. Ron Hubbard, and the absolute brilliance of his self-taught rocketry! And if that wasn't enough, I even take the time to dissect the Moon Landing a bit, discussing why people think that Stanley Kubrick faked the footage and what some of the key details of the hoax theory are. It's one wild fuckin ride this week, I hope you dig it!RELATED MATERIALDIVE MANUAL AUDIOBOOKHUNT MANUALBHA LINKTREE w books, shorts, and much moreBHA episode: UFO, Psychedelia & Disinfo GamesBHA episode: UFOs and Carl JungSHOW NOTESNazis in SpaceJung on Flying SaucersJordan Bimm on SpaceStanley Kubrick & the Moon Landing TheoryJack Parsons, Sex Magick & NASAJack Parsons & L. All we can say is that this show is about No Rain. Louie, Ryan & Al sets up tea for three as we talk about Blind Melon's immortal smash hit. "No Rain." Forgive us for the mispronunciation of the director's last name. It's pronounced, "BAYer" not "BUYer." After surveying all of the available new Christmas and holiday themed music that I could find, I came up with a tidy playlist of nine noteworthy songs to share here in an episode that departs from our usual artist interview format. Here, we play full songs in several sets, with some back stories on each artist and song. Ranging from the elegant, folky take on “Coventry Carol” by The Milk Carton Kids to country leaning Americana in “Layaway Momma” from Adam Chaffins, to previous Southern Songs and Stories guest The Get Right Band and other fellow western NC artists, this episode celebrates an array of styles and perspectives on the season. With list in hand, little Joey Kendrick sits happily on Santa's lap across from sister Leigh, who ponders the validity of the this oddly formal and forced tradition. Circa 1976. Included here is a special from Christmas past, from my days producing the radio show What It Is on public radio WNCW, with founding panelists Jeff Eason and Fred Mills. We celebrated Jeff's life and many contributions to music and journalism after his passing in 2018 on this podcast, in the episode “Remembering Jeff Eason”. Following the music portion of this episode, we take you back fifteen years, to a time when What It Is was just two years old. You will hear a younger version of me (with a cold) talking by phone with Jeff and Fred in two short episodes, detailing some of our favorite holiday music as well as the Christmas and holiday music we would love to do without. Songs heard in this episode: Dulci Ellenberger “Colorful Christmas”Ana Egge “Silver Bells Ring” John Doyle and Mick McAuley “Gleann na-Ean”The Get Right Band “Christmas As A Kid”The Pinkerton Raid, “Happy XMas (War Is Over)”, from Winter Songs By Other PeopleAdam Chaffins “Layaway Momma” JD Clayton “Your Favorite Christmas Song” The Milk Carton Kids “Coventry Carol”, from Christmas In A Minor KeyJenn Grant “Bells Are Ringing”Thanks for listening! We hope you can help spread awareness of what we are doing. It is as easy as telling a friend and following this podcast on your platform of choice, so easy! You can find us on Apple here, and Spotify here — hundreds more episodes and many hundreds more artists await you. From there it takes just a moment to give us a top rating, and where it is an option, a review! It makes a great difference because the more top reviews and ratings we get, the more visible we become to everyone on those platforms, which means that more people just like you connect with artists like The Get Right Band, Dulci Ellenberger, John Doyle, and literally hundreds more we have profiled that are at your fingertips. Speaking of Silas Durocher and The Get Right Band, their episode from 2023 stands the test of time, and you can find that by looking up “Psychedelia in the Carolinas Then and Now With The Get Right Band and Ken Friedman” on southernsongsandstories.com, as well as the search feature on your podcast platform of choice. This series is a part of the lineup of both public radio WNCW and Osiris Media, with all of the Osiris shows available here. You can also hear new episodes on Bluegrass Planet Radio here. Thanks also to Jaclyn Anthony for producing the radio adaptations of this series on WNCW, where we worked with Joshua Meng, who wrote and performed our theme songs — you can link to his music here. On this week's show we continue our discussion of Rick Beato's argument that music is too easy to make. We read your emails and take a look at the week's news. Is Music Getting Worse? - A listener followup I just listened to your podcast episode “Is Music Getting Worse,” related to Rick Beato's YouTube video, which I also watched a few days ago. He raised some intriguing points, both about changes over the years with sampling, autotune, and quantization, as well as how AI will undoubtedly impact the industry as well. It's a fascinating and complex topic, and I wanted to share some thoughts. First off, my daughter is a professional opera singer, so I am very sensitive to the fact that I would not want artists who are deep in their craft to be supplanted by technology. Losing the human aspect altogether would be a tragedy for us all, whether as creators or as consumers of music. Selfishly, for my daughter and for all artists, I want humans to be respected and compensated for the obvious heart and soul that they put into their craft. With respect to AI, one major and well-founded concern is that relying too heavily on AI could lead to a homogenization of music, where unique, human-driven creativity could become overshadowed by algorithms, resulting in music that degrades to the mean and lacks soul. Which I would argue has happened well before AI has come on the scene. Having said that, AI also has the potential to enhance music production by automating tedious tasks and providing new tools for musicians, which could free up artists to focus more on the creative aspects of their work. One aspect that often gets overlooked in these discussions is that music production isn't just about the creative performers—the singers and musicians. It involves a vast array of professionals, including audio and sound engineers, mastering engineers, and various other technical experts who all play a crucial role in shaping the final product. The Beatles used these talented engineers at Abbey Road to come up with iconic sounds that would never have been achievable by the members of the Beatles alone. So, one must ask, where is the line? As AI improves and enables the creation of individual tracks, or stems (currently most AI song generators provide fully formed sound waves), it could open up new avenues to innovate and bring different types of music together by mixing and arranging music in virtually unlimited ways. While the focus tends to be on how AI might impact the creative people who write, sing, and play songs, it's also worth considering how it could empower the broader community of producers. This technology might unlock new channels of creativity and collaboration that we haven't even imagined yet. In addition, for the creators, the use of AI song/sound generators as “sketch pads” for fleshing out songs, similar to how demo tapes were used prior to final recording, is a fascinating thought exercise. It could serve as a tool to experiment and develop ideas before committing to a final version. Or to bring an idea to a group of real musicians to refine and play live. I'm a child of the 70s and 80s. I love Cheap Trick and the Scorps! I also love British new wave, Alt and Psychedelia. To “prove” a point, I used a service called UDIO. It is one of the services that you mentioned are being sued at the moment. I prompted the AI to give me song snippets in the style of British pop, Alt Rock, Psychedelia, etc. I took a bunch of these song snippets and stitched them together in a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation), very much the same way that music producers currently “create” full-blown songs. I have attached the MP3 for your listening “pleasure” (take with a big grain of salt!). I share this with you as a simple example of what could be. It is not a great song by any means; it's derivative, it's corny, and it will never make the charts, but that's not the point. If it was streaming at a bar in the background, I wouldn't think it was horrible; in fact, it might be great background music for that setting. And this is version 1 of this new technology. What will it be like in the next 5-10 years? I've been listening to you guys for at least that long. Think about how the audio and video industries have changed so dramatically during that time, whether with the 400-pound TVs you guys referenced or in the quality of streaming vs physical media we have seen over that time. You guys questioned whether AI would be successful in music. I only have to look at throngs of people going to EDM concerts where there is no band, just a DJ playing “stream of consciousness” with audio loops to know that this technology will definitely have a place. The questions are, where, to what extent and how will the money flow?? Eager to hear your thoughts. Great show, and I appreciate your perspectives on all things home audio, video, and automation.
