All we can say is that this show is about No Rain. Louie, Ryan & Al sets up tea for three as we talk about Blind Melon's immortal smash hit. "No Rain." Forgive us for the mispronunciation of the director's last name. It's pronounced, "BAYer" not "BUYer." That's Al's fault. We also started a Buy Me A Coffee page if you want to donate to our music video cause. Anything would be deeply appreciated! Thank you.
One April evening 60 years ago, John Lennon and George Harrison ingested something that they'd never experienced before, and didn't even know they were consuming. It would be the start of a wild night out on the town, and the beginning of the transformation of the sound of the Beatles; and, by extension, it would help create a new genre called "acid-rock." Randy Renaud revisits that crazy night on this week's edition of the Chronicles of Rock.
Today's psychedelic music might not be covered in peace signs and flower petals, but it does owe plenty to the sounds of the 60s. On today's show we explore 3 new-ish psychedelic albums that are sure to get you in the right headspace. Other Diggins What do you think of these records? What are psychedelic […]
After surveying all of the available new Christmas and holiday themed music that I could find, I came up with a tidy playlist of nine noteworthy songs to share here in an episode that departs from our usual artist interview format. Here, we play full songs in several sets, with some back stories on each artist and song. Ranging from the elegant, folky take on “Coventry Carol” by The Milk Carton Kids to country leaning Americana in “Layaway Momma” from Adam Chaffins, to previous Southern Songs and Stories guest The Get Right Band and other fellow western NC artists, this episode celebrates an array of styles and perspectives on the season. With list in hand, little Joey Kendrick sits happily on Santa's lap across from sister Leigh, who ponders the validity of the this oddly formal and forced tradition. Circa 1976. Included here is a special from Christmas past, from my days producing the radio show What It Is on public radio WNCW, with founding panelists Jeff Eason and Fred Mills. We celebrated Jeff's life and many contributions to music and journalism after his passing in 2018 on this podcast, in the episode “Remembering Jeff Eason”. Following the music portion of this episode, we take you back fifteen years, to a time when What It Is was just two years old. You will hear a younger version of me (with a cold) talking by phone with Jeff and Fred in two short episodes, detailing some of our favorite holiday music as well as the Christmas and holiday music we would love to do without. Songs heard in this episode: Dulci Ellenberger “Colorful Christmas”Ana Egge “Silver Bells Ring” John Doyle and Mick McAuley “Gleann na-Ean”The Get Right Band “Christmas As A Kid”The Pinkerton Raid, “Happy XMas (War Is Over)”, from Winter Songs By Other PeopleAdam Chaffins “Layaway Momma” JD Clayton “Your Favorite Christmas Song” The Milk Carton Kids “Coventry Carol”, from Christmas In A Minor KeyJenn Grant “Bells Are Ringing”Thanks for listening! We hope you can help spread awareness of what we are doing. It is as easy as telling a friend and following this podcast on your platform of choice, so easy! You can find us on Apple here, and Spotify here — hundreds more episodes and many hundreds more artists await you. From there it takes just a moment to give us a top rating, and where it is an option, a review! It makes a great difference because the more top reviews and ratings we get, the more visible we become to everyone on those platforms, which means that more people just like you connect with artists like The Get Right Band, Dulci Ellenberger, John Doyle, and literally hundreds more we have profiled that are at your fingertips. Speaking of Silas Durocher and The Get Right Band, their episode from 2023 stands the test of time, and you can find that by looking up “Psychedelia in the Carolinas Then and Now With The Get Right Band and Ken Friedman” on southernsongsandstories.com, as well as the search feature on your podcast platform of choice. This series is a part of the lineup of both public radio WNCW and Osiris Media, with all of the Osiris shows available here. You can also hear new episodes on Bluegrass Planet Radio here. Thanks also to Jaclyn Anthony for producing the radio adaptations of this series on WNCW, where we worked with Joshua Meng, who wrote and performed our theme songs — you can link to his music here. In 1966, Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce, and Ginger Baker left their previous projects to form Cream, rock's first supergroup and a defining force in Britain's ‘Electric Blues Rock' movement. Their debut album, ‘Fresh Cream', was the starting point for this power trio - revolutionising British Blues by elevating the electric guitar's role, blending Hard Rock, Psychedelia, and Jazz and setting a high standard for Blues-inspired musicians seeking their own unique sound. Jorma Kaukonen Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson Let your fingers do the running to the play button. Please! One of the greatest, funnest, most illuminating conversations I've had the privilege to share, Jorma Kaukonen, iconic legend, musical hero, rock god, (I mean, come on!) exceeded all expectations and then some. From early days in Pakistan with one pop 45 to Ricky Nelson, and Buddy Holly, 15-year-old returning expat Jorma, took up guitar and soon was in his first band, The Triumphs, with bandmate, Jack Casady, still his bandmate and best friend today, 65+ years later. Beyond amazing. And the fact that they were rehearsing moments before Jorma and I went Live blows my mind. A testament to their ongoing greatness. We talked about Antioch, and not exactly being encouraged to return. Janis, and The Typewriter Tape, San Francisco, Monterey, Hendrix, Jerry, Marty, Paul, Grace, and Jorma's nickname that became the Jefferson Airplane - his invite to Jack Casady. Psychedelia, Surrealistic Pillow, the making of––in my top 5, and it was made in less than two weeks! Woodstock - getting in and getting out and Grace Slick's unforgettable - “Good Morning, People.” What was unforgettable for Jorma. Goosebumps for me. Hot Tuna, how and why it started and continues to flourish. Jorma and Jack! The recent end of Hot Tuna Electric - the why - simple - not totally undoable. The Book, Been So Long - chock full of golden nuggets like those shared here. Years of teaching and concerts culminating in The Fur Peace Ranch, now sold, but will be picking up in Jorma and Vanessa's new locale. To keep up with the indefatigable Mr. Kaukonen https://jormakaukonen.com The cherry on top of this chat that seemed to fly by in an instant was Jorma indulging this rabid Airplane/Surrealistic Pillow fan, playing his Embryonic Journey, with a fab Jack sidebar (see the Live comments) and then a gorgeous, Take Your Time, for his daughter. This is one for the books. I'll cherish it always. Because Jorma's so important to me it was important that I do right by him. So grateful it was so much fun. I'm gonna be smiling for a long time to come. In this episode I take a trip through the time stream to connect with the man himself...Jerry Garcia. This episode features two rare interviews that encapsulate the birth of not only the Grateful Dead, but also the 60's counter culture movement, and it's gargantuan impact on the western world. Jerry shares some incredible stories about his beginnings, the acid tests, his genesis as a musician, and so much more. He continues as he elaborates on various topics like psychedelia and spirituality. Closing the episode is the final recorded interview with Jerry, and some of the closing thoughts as he graduated into the next world.. A historical episode.. Tune In, Turn On, Drop In!Jerry Garcia Bio:Jerome John Garcia (August 1, 1942 – August 9, 1995) was an American musician who was the principal songwriter, lead guitarist, and a vocalist with the rock band Grateful Dead, which he co-founded and which came to prominence during the counterculture of the 1960s.Although he disavowed the role, Garcia was viewed by many as the leader of the band. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 as a member of the Grateful Dead. As one of its founders, Garcia performed with the Grateful Dead for the band's entire 30-year career (1965–1995). Garcia also founded and participated in a variety of side projects, including the Saunders–Garcia Band (with longtime friend Merl Saunders), the Jerry Garcia Band, Old & In the Way, the Garcia/Grisman and Garcia/Kahn acoustic duos, Legion of Mary, and New Riders of the Purple Sage (which he co-founded with John Dawson and David Nelson). He also released several solo albums, and contributed to a number of albums by other artists over the years as a session musician. He was well known for his distinctive guitar playing, and was ranked 13th in Rolling Stone's "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" cover story in 2003. In the 2015 version of the list he was ranked at #46.. In 2023, Garcia was ranked 34th by Rolling Stone. Garcia was renowned for his musical and technical ability, particularly his ability to play a variety of instruments and sustain long improvisations. Garcia believed that improvisation took stress away from his playing and allowed him to make spur of the moment decisions that he would not have made intentionally. In a 1993 interview with Rolling Stone, Garcia noted that "my own preferences are for improvisation, for making it up as I go along. The idea of picking, of eliminating possibilities by deciding, that's difficult for me". Originating from the days of the "Acid Tests", these improvisations were a form of exploration rather than playing a song already written.. Later in life, Garcia struggled with diabetes. In 1986, he went into a diabetic coma that nearly cost him his life. Although his overall health improved somewhat after the incident, he continued to struggle with obesity, smoking, and long-standing heroin and cocaine addictions. He was staying in a California drug rehabilitation facility when he died of a heart attack in August 1995, at age 53.. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

On this week's show we continue our discussion of Rick Beato's argument that music is too easy to make. We read your emails and take a look at the week's news. Is Music Getting Worse? - A listener followup I just listened to your podcast episode “Is Music Getting Worse,” related to Rick Beato's YouTube video, which I also watched a few days ago. He raised some intriguing points, both about changes over the years with sampling, autotune, and quantization, as well as how AI will undoubtedly impact the industry as well. It's a fascinating and complex topic, and I wanted to share some thoughts. First off, my daughter is a professional opera singer, so I am very sensitive to the fact that I would not want artists who are deep in their craft to be supplanted by technology. Losing the human aspect altogether would be a tragedy for us all, whether as creators or as consumers of music. Selfishly, for my daughter and for all artists, I want humans to be respected and compensated for the obvious heart and soul that they put into their craft. With respect to AI, one major and well-founded concern is that relying too heavily on AI could lead to a homogenization of music, where unique, human-driven creativity could become overshadowed by algorithms, resulting in music that degrades to the mean and lacks soul. Which I would argue has happened well before AI has come on the scene. Having said that, AI also has the potential to enhance music production by automating tedious tasks and providing new tools for musicians, which could free up artists to focus more on the creative aspects of their work. One aspect that often gets overlooked in these discussions is that music production isn't just about the creative performers—the singers and musicians. It involves a vast array of professionals, including audio and sound engineers, mastering engineers, and various other technical experts who all play a crucial role in shaping the final product. The Beatles used these talented engineers at Abbey Road to come up with iconic sounds that would never have been achievable by the members of the Beatles alone. So, one must ask, where is the line? As AI improves and enables the creation of individual tracks, or stems (currently most AI song generators provide fully formed sound waves), it could open up new avenues to innovate and bring different types of music together by mixing and arranging music in virtually unlimited ways. While the focus tends to be on how AI might impact the creative people who write, sing, and play songs, it's also worth considering how it could empower the broader community of producers. This technology might unlock new channels of creativity and collaboration that we haven't even imagined yet. In addition, for the creators, the use of AI song/sound generators as “sketch pads” for fleshing out songs, similar to how demo tapes were used prior to final recording, is a fascinating thought exercise. It could serve as a tool to experiment and develop ideas before committing to a final version. Or to bring an idea to a group of real musicians to refine and play live. I'm a child of the 70s and 80s. I love Cheap Trick and the Scorps! I also love British new wave, Alt and Psychedelia. To “prove” a point, I used a service called UDIO. It is one of the services that you mentioned are being sued at the moment. I prompted the AI to give me song snippets in the style of British pop, Alt Rock, Psychedelia, etc. I took a bunch of these song snippets and stitched them together in a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation), very much the same way that music producers currently “create” full-blown songs. I have attached the MP3 for your listening “pleasure” (take with a big grain of salt!). I share this with you as a simple example of what could be. It is not a great song by any means; it's derivative, it's corny, and it will never make the charts, but that's not the point. If it was streaming at a bar in the background, I wouldn't think it was horrible; in fact, it might be great background music for that setting. And this is version 1 of this new technology. What will it be like in the next 5-10 years? I've been listening to you guys for at least that long. Think about how the audio and video industries have changed so dramatically during that time, whether with the 400-pound TVs you guys referenced or in the quality of streaming vs physical media we have seen over that time. You guys questioned whether AI would be successful in music. I only have to look at throngs of people going to EDM concerts where there is no band, just a DJ playing “stream of consciousness” with audio loops to know that this technology will definitely have a place. The questions are, where, to what extent and how will the money flow?? Eager to hear your thoughts. Great show, and I appreciate your perspectives on all things home audio, video, and automation. Dan talks with James Everhart, a man who's been part of a lot of Philadelphia music over the years, about his long tenure amidst bands like Low Cut Connie, Scantron, and his current project, 10-member supergroup Cosmic Guilt. James talks about hitting the road with Low Cut Connie right out of college, and how he had to pull back from the touring life for his own mental health and stability. Dan and James talk about the careful balance that it takes to have a band with 10 members, British psych folk, James' designs for Philly brewery Human Robot, letting each member put their mark on a song, a close eye on visual aesthetics, and the inspiration for their newest album being a mansion made out of junk in Vineland, NJ. Cosmic Guilt's newest album, 'Palace Of Depression', is out May 31st on their Bandcamp and wherever you get digital music.

Fabien de Menou (Perilymph) Perilymph's “Progressions Imaginaires” - https://open.spotify.com/album/ "PERILYMPH started as a one-man project led by Fabien de Menou, a french multi-instrumentalist living in Berlin, who was interested in producing music in the vein of Kraut Rock tinged Psychedelia. Hicksville, Long Island natives The Lemon Twigs have built a reputation for grand pop songs that harken back to the psychedelia and prog rock of the 1960s and 70s. The lead singles for their forthcoming album, A Dream Is All We Know, promise more of their masterful pastiche. Brothers and bandmates Brian and Michael D'Addario join us live in studio five to perform.
Dan goes in deep with Scott Radway about his early musical tastes (all Beatles), going to music school despite his parents advice to the contrary (they had both attended music school), composition, touring with bands, and becoming both an accomplished producer and songwriter on his own (he's currently a member of lo priestess with wife Gina LC of Dear Forbidden). Song cycles, Rush, Beck, the many flavours of psychdelia, begging, becoming a new father, and more. 'Poppies' is the new LP from Scott, it's out March 22nd wherever you get digital music, and available to preorder on vinyl at his Bandcamp. Also, Dan offers up a few words about The Grape Room, a long standing independent music venue in Manayunk, which just announced its closing this last weekend.

Matty Day is an artist that can't be pigeonholed into any genre. The proof of this is his new album, Meta Dada, which one could say is a reflection of his career to date. This album zig zags from genre to genre and subgenre to subgenre, sometimes in the course of a single song. One thing this album is not is boring. Meta Dada is full of outstanding performances by Matty and the twenty some odd musicians he has playing on it. Underlying the entire project is some very smart humor to keep you on your toes. And if you didn't think Meta Dada was enough, we also talk about Wayne Newton."In Our Coldest Time," "Ode to Jove," "Sunburn," "Lady Circadia," and "Untrue & Not Enough" written and performed by Matty Day℗ 2023 Matty Day. Psychedelic compounds have been used for thousands of years in spiritual and healing rituals. Today, the experiences induced by the compounds produce an opportunity for modern healers to guide patients into releasing trauma and building a new mindset. But how qualified are the current shamans and guides to lead trauma therapy sessions with non-regulated psychedelic drugs? And are the drugs essential to healing trauma, or can healing be achieved solely through enlightenment? To gather information from someone who in the name of scientific research, has first-hand knowledge of multiple psychedelics, Positive Psychology Podcast Host Lisa Cypers Kamen speaks with clinical neuropsychologist and author Andy MitchellAfter meeting a stranger who recommended a mind trip, Andy set out on a journey of using psychedelics for scientific research. The details of his forty trips in sixty days became the foundation of his book, Ten Trips: The New Reality of Psychedelics. Andy shares the elements of his most powerful trip and some of the mind-blowing experiences psychedelics have gifted him during his journey.. Myconid madness! Things get a little hot and nasty in this spore-dense space, as Jim disappears into a role.
There have been women practicing psychedelic healing in anonymity for decades. What can they teach our modern culture about developing safe, effective, and respectful relationships with these powerful substances?
