In Episode 327 of History in Five Songs with Martin Popoff, Martin ponders the question of which record truly marked the end of prog's golden era, tracing the genre's rise from King Crimson and Genesis through Pink Floyd and Yes, and debating where the vitality of prog finally gave way to punk, new wave, and beyond. Some songs blaze up the charts and live forever on the radio, while others—just as powerful—get lost in the shadows. In this episode, George, John, and TR shine a spotlight on the deep cuts, hidden gems, and overlooked masterpieces that never quite got the recognition they deserved. Then John and TR recap this year's ProgPower fest in Atlanta.
Always a pleasure to have Steve Howe on the podcast. The Yes guitarist joins me this time to discuss a couple of reissues from his solo back catalogue; “Natural Timbre” and “Portraits of Bob Dylan”. The former being an all acoustic record, and the latter being, as you may have inferred, a Dylan covers album. It was a nice excuse to talk about Dylan, and solo albums in general. I, of course, also take the opportunity to catch up on the things in the Yes camp, including their forthcoming tour playing the classic album “Fragile” in full. Enjoy. This week, Frizz is sipping Great Glen's Yuzu Gin and Bob's got a glass of Ardnahoe's Inaugural Release Single Malt Scotch as we dive into Invisible Touch - the sleek, synth-driven album that launched Genesis into full-blown pop superstardom. We unpack how a band that started with prog epics and fox masks ended up dominating MTV, topping charts, and soundtracking an entire decade. From political puppets and breakup ballads to keytar solos and stadium-sized hooks, this is Genesis at their most confident, polished, and unexpectedly iconic.
