This week, we received our annual audit visit from corporate! That's right, The Chairman not only graced us with his presence, but he demanded we deliver to you this episode: “Grave Mistake: BÖC Shoulda Been Huge!!!”. One could argue that selling 24M albums would negate “Shoulda Been Huge” treatment. However, when most folks can only name 3 songs by this band, and one of them is due to an SNL skit, we think they fit the bill.This episode is rooted in our Should Have Been category; however, there is a strong case to be made that they've been largely forgotten as innovators and architects of what we know as heavy metal. We think they should be remembered as titans of hard rock and metal! Hope ya dig!Songs this week include:Blue Öyster Cult - “Transmaniacon MC” from Blue Öyster Cult(1972)Blue Öyster Cult - “The Red & The Black” from Tyranny And Mutation (1973)Blue Öyster Cult - “Flaming Telepaths” from Secret Treaties (1974)Blue Öyster Cult - “Tenderloin” from Agents Of Fortune (1976)Blue Öyster Cult - “R.U. For this months episode we head back to 1971 for a batch of epicly long prog epics, peppered with the occasional bit of folk rock, powerpop, metal, jazz, and afrobeat. Our longest playlist yet, and lots of fun along the way! We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order.She also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine.Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year.Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - Badfinger, The Beach Boys, Black Sabbath, David Bowie, Can, Caravan, Neil Diamond, Nick Drake, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Flower Travelin' Band, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Focus, Hampton Grease Band, Jimi Hendrix, The Hollies, Billy Joel, King Crimson, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Nazz, Harry Nilsson, The Norman Haines Band, Osibisa, Pink FLoyd, The Rolling Stones, Pharoah Sanders, Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazlewood, Stephen Stills, Traffic, Van Der Graaf Generator & The WhoFind all songs in alphabetical order here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/36GaQbyuHTepSEAQkXubCN?si=24673026411f4e51Find our We Dig Music Pollwinners Party playlist (featuring all of the winning songs up until now) here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/45zfDHo8zm6VqrvoEQSt3z?si=Ivt0oMj6SmitimvumYfFrQIf you want to listen to megalength playlists of all the songs we've individually picked since we started doing best of the year episodes (which need updating but I plan on doing them over the next few months or so), you can listen to Colin's here – https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5x3Vy5Jry2IxG9JNOtabRT?si=HhcVKRCtRhWCK1KucyrDdgIan's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2H0hnxe6WX50QNQdlfRH5T?si=XmEjnRqISNqDwi30p1uLqAand Tracey's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2p3K0n8dKhjHb2nKBSYnKi?si=7a-cyDvSSuugdV1m5md9NwThe playlist of 20 songs from the other two hosts was scored as usual, our favourite song got 20 points, counting down incrementally to our least favourite which got 1 point. The scoring of our own list of 10 is now slightly more complicated in order to give a truer level of points to our own favourites. So rather than them only being able to score as many points as our 10th favourite in the other list, the points in our own list were distributed as follows -1st place - 20 points2nd place - 18 points3rd place – 16 points4th place – 14 points5th place – 12 points6th place – 9 points7th place – 7 points8th place – 5 points9th place – 3 points10th place -1 pointHosts - Ian Clarke, Colin Jackson-Brown & Tracey BGuest starring Helen Jackson-Brown.Playlist compiling/distributing – Helen Jackson-BrownRecorded/Edited/Mixed/Original Music by Colin Jackson-Brown for We Dig PodcastsThanks to Peter Latimer for help with the scoring system.Part of the We Dig Podcasts network along with Free With This Months Issue & Pick A Disc.Bluesky - https://bsky.app/profile/wedigmusic.bsky.socialInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/wedigmusicpcast/Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/wedigpusicpcast/Find our other episodes & podcasts at www.wedigpodcasts.com

Guitarist John McLaughlin's career has been long and winding. From his early solo records and work with Miles Davis, he possessed a unique approach to the guitar that encompassed jazz and rock vocabulary, played with a biting tone and stellar, virtuosic technique. He's never stopped developing, and we're covering our favorite highlights of McLaughlin's career: his acoustic (and later electric) take on Indian music with Shakti, his more traditional jazz projects, and much more.There are lots of listening highlights in this episode and we've covered as much as we can: Mahavishnu Orchestra's first two records are undisputable; Tony Williams Lifetime's Emergency may be the birth of fusion guitar; McLaughlin's mid-career studies in Indian music are inspiring; his take on Coltrane in an organ-jazz setting is monumental. But we could still cover a whole other episode's worth.Sponsored by PRS Guitars: http://prsguitars.comFollow Nick: https://www.instagram.com/nickmillevoiFollow Jason: https://www.instagram.com/jasonshadrickGet at us: 100guitarists@premierguitar.comCall/Text: 319-423-9734Podcast powered by Sweetwater. This is the WORLD PREMIERE of “THE RICH ONES ALL STARS”, the new extended version of my recent single, “The Rich Ones”. The new version features me and my band, Project Grand Slam, along with 8 World Class musicians who previously have been guests on this podcast. Here's the back story.A few months ago I released a single, “The Rich Ones”, featuring Randy Brecker of Blood Sweat & Tears fame on flugelhorn. The single was very popular, and I decided to do something a bit daring and different. I've had many World Class musicians as guests on the podcast. So I asked several of them if they would record a new solo for the track and I would release a new, extended version of the tune. I'm pleased to say that everyone who I asked agreed.The new version, “The Rich Ones All Stars”, features the following musicians in this order.BILLY COBHAM of Mahavishnu Orchestra fame, recorded a new drum track for the tune. Billy is one of the most revered drummers of all time.I kept RANDY BRECKER'S flugelhorn solo from the original version of the tune because it's just so darn good.JOHN HELLIWELL was the saxophonist in Supertramp, one of the greatest bands of the rock era. John contributed a fantastic sax solo to the piece.PAT COIL is an acclaimed jazz pianist who has performed with Michael McDonald, Carmen McRae and many others. He added a sublime piano solo.PETER TIEHUIS is the heralded Dutch guitarist who performs with the Metropole Orkest. He contributed a wonderful guitar solo.ANTONIO FARAO is the extraordinary Italian jazz keyboard player who has performed with Joe Lovano and Jack DeJohnette among others. Antonio contributed a smokin' Fender Rhodes keyboard solo.ELLIOTT RANDALL is the incredible guitarist who gave the world the unforgettable solo on Steely Dan's “Reelin' In The Years”. Elliott gave me a classic guitar solo for the new track.And last, but certainly not least, is DAVID AMRAM, who is, simply put, a National Treasure at 96 years young. He was Leonard Bernstein's first composer in residence for the New York Philharmonic and also the composer for Shakespeare In The Park among many other accomplishments. David contributed a stunning Pennywhistle solo for the track.So there it is. 8 World Class musicians who have contributed their talent to this project.TO WATCH THE OFFICIAL VIDEO CLICK HERETO LISTEN AND STREAM THE TRACK AND FOR ALL LINKS CLICK HERE---------------------------------------------The Follow Your Dream Podcast:Top 1% of all podcasts with Listeners in 200 countries!For more information and other episodes of the podcast click here. Narada Michael Walden Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson Wow! I've seen hundreds of photos, loads of videos - I've never seen Narada Michael Walden in an orange bowler. When was the last time I wore orange? InSync! From the first moment to the last, what a glorious, grateful, exuberant lovefest. Narada is as passionate, fun, inviting, and accessible as his music. We talked about his first paper drumkit at 5, how he watched, listened, and learned from his heroes. How the soul sounds of Detroit shaped him, how it's all soul sounds. From his first band at 11 to the Mahavishnu Orchestra, which would change his life in all ways… adding prayer. mediation, service, and Narada to his name, gifted by his guru, Sri Chinmoy, thanks to John McLaughlin, and of course, the music, following in Billy Cobham's big footsteps, touring with Jeff Beck, then recording Wired with him, writing “material” for the album, the full circle back to Beck a decade ago and the story behind their masterpiece version of Little Wing. Ah me! How playing transitioned to producing, inspired by Quincy Jones to service other artists, and the superstar women he championed to great heights - Aretha with their Grammy Song of The Year, Freeway of Love, Whitney with their 6 number one hits including their Grammy Winning Album of the Year, Mariah, with musical knowledge to match her musical chops. We talked our friend, Allee Willis, Keith Moon, Ringo, Jaco, Carlos, Sting, Trudy, Stevie, Marvin, Cissy, his last tour with Journey, and how his devotion to his wife and children brought him home. This very morning Narada was up at 6 readying his kids for school and then driving them there. This interview was held early so that he'd be home when they got home. Quite a man. Respect. For a taste of what Narada himself is up to musically, check out his The More I Love My Life https://bfan.link/the-more-i-love-my-life with Sting, Carlos, and Stevie, I can't stop listening! It seems to so sum up this man of grace. And while you're at it, watch this - and tear yourself away, if you can! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9UQbf_VoQI Perfection! Jeff, Narada, and Rhonda, do Jimi proud. This is a man as comfortable with pop, soul, funk, rock, and blues as he is with fusion. Brilliant with them all. Loving and appreciating them all, and, as his audience, I'll gratefully follow him to any of them. I loved every second in Narada's most excellent company. Grateful girl! Employing controversial VAR technology, we re-examine various events on the rock and roll pitch and suggest a new perspective. Those key moments include … … the “bucolic frolic” at Knebworth 50 years ago as seen from 100 yards away just past the burger van and featuring Tim Buckley, Alex Harvey, the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Van Morrison, the Doobie Brothers and the Allman Brothers Band. And a stark naked Jesus. … when did the Age of Spectacle begin? … how Two-Way Family Favourites helped start Live Aid. … Waters v Gilmour, a feud way beyond candour and honesty. … the moment Van Morrison first became ‘Captain Letdown'. … memories of Wembley Stadium on July 13 1985 – Status Quo, U2, the non-appearance of Cat Stevens, the planned link with Ian Botham at Trent Bridge and swapping Tony Hancock lines with a man on Concorde. ... the three stages of rock and roll. … life before mobile phones. … The Revenant and Zone Of Interest, films that feel like the past without trying to make the past look cool. … “the older I get, the older I wanna get”. … Joni Mitchell and why we love an old curmudgeon. … and birthday guest Andrew Stocks wonders why some bands can't bury the hatchet.Find out more about how to help us to keep the conversation going: https://www.patreon.com/wordinyourear Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. This episode is the WORLD PREMIERE of “Lou's Blues”, my new single. As I've mentioned several times on the podcast, I came of age musically during the British Invasion era of the 1960s, and then I segued into the Jazz Fusion era of the 1970s. That era was dominated by incredible bands like Weather Report, Return To Forever and the Mahavishnu Orchestra. My band, Sagov, was a part of that scene.What I loved about jazz fusion era was how it combined the power of rock with the sophistication and improvisation of jazz. “Lou's Blues” is inspired by that era. I call it a tone poem. It's a musical journey. I wrote it in the recording studio and we did it in one take.Mark Egan, acclaimed bassist with the Pat Metheny Group, Elements and Gil Evans, calls the track “Fantastic! Great playing and production!” Peter Erskine, Superstar drummer with Weather Report, says “Digging It!”The track features my band, Project Grand Slam, consisting of Tristan Clark on guitar, Baden Goyo on keyboards, Joel E. Mateo on drums, Guillermo Barron on percussion, and me on bass. The producer is Tony Carey, singer-songwriter and keyboard genius.“Lou's Blues” is available for streaming on all the streaming platforms. My guest in this episode is Lynn Asher ( www.lynnasher.com ) who was introduced to Music Talks by a recent guest Paul Webb (Ep 92). Lynn is a native of Portland Maine but she had a childhood dream to move to California. It took some time to fulfil her dream but this year Lynn celebrates 30 years living in California and her musical career spans a similar timescale. Despite being a ‘late bloomer' Lynn has performed and recorded with many big names in the music business including:· Big Brother & The Holding Company· Jerry Harrison - Talking Heads, · Bob Weir- Grateful Dead · Narada Michael Walden - Producer - Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Barbra Streisand. Drummer for Mahavishnu Orchestra, Jeff Beck, Aretha Franklin, & Journey. Lynn writes her own original material, one of which is the song choice for the 2000's and was also the assistant to Tracy Chapman for a time. As you will hear at the start of the episode there was also a live appearance with a big musical hero of mine ……In 2009, Lynn became a vocal coach and it has become a real passion, particularly working with young singers, one of which provides her song choice for the 2020's (www.annaharrell.net )Lynn's story is a great musical journey but there is also a personal journey and adversity to be dealt with. In Lynn's case this was dealing with Breast Cancer on three occasions, and I hope you find her insight into how she thought and dealt with that as inspirational as I did. Lynn's song choices are. 60's - Hey Jude - The Beatles70's - You Should Be Dancing - Bee Gees80's - You Can Sleep While I Drive - Melissa Etheridge90's - Why - Annie Lennox00's - Now That You're Gone - Lynn Asher10's - Freedom - (From ‘Django Unchained') 20's - Night Light - Anna HarrellIf you would like to be on the show then please contact me at musictalkspod@outlook.com Please follow and like Music Talks on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/musictalkspod . Narada Michael Walden has won "Producer Of The Year" at the Grammy Awards. Before he produced monster records for Aretha Franklin, George Michael, Whitney Houston, and others, he was a prolific drummer from Michigan with a dream. In Part 1 of his Questlove Supreme interview, Narada recalls his upbringing and influences. He details his experiences, ranging from seeing Stevie Wonder as a child and years hanging out with P-Funk's Eddie Hazel. Narada also describes his time as a member of the Mahavishnu Orchestra and working with some of the most revered Jazz legends while as a disciple of Sri Chinmoy. This is a rare audience with one of Questlove's greatest inspirations.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This episode's title is a wee bit misleading. The boys don't meet Mr. Mahavishnu (John McLaughlin, of course) but rather Matt Phillips, long-time listener to the podcast who just happened to write a very good book on the famous fusion guitarist called "John McLaughlin - From Miles and Mahavishnu to the 4th Dimension." The book covers the whole of McLaughlin's recorded career - not just his best known years with the Mahavishnu Orchestra - and our conversation is also wide-ranging. And, no, Mike hasn't turned into a robot. He just sounds like one because recording zoom is trickier than it seems.
He played with the Mahavishnu Orchestra. He co-wrote and produced "Freeway of Love" for Aretha Franklin and "How Will I Know" for Whitney Houston. And he tells a great story. Even if you're unfamiliar with Narada, you know his work, and you'll love listening to him.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Hello Hello! Billy Amendola in my “Bubble” with today's guest, who is not only one of the most respected musicians/producers on the planet, but he's also been a mentor, an inspiration, and a dear friend to me for decades. He appeared on the scene in NYC from Michigan as a drummer and teacher. A few of his students include Omar Hakim, the late Tony Thompson, and many others who launched successful careers. At 21, he joined the Mahavishnu Orchestra on the recommendation of their previous drummer (who was at the top of his game with the title “greatest drummer”), the one and only Billy Cobham. Now a band-member, he goes from the road into the studio to work on the next Mahavishnu album with John McLaughlin, Jan Hammer, and legendary Beatles producer George Martin. A few years later, he took the world by storm on the dance floor by releasing his solo album; singing, writing, producing, and playing, and he became a star in his own right. If that wasn't enough, a few years later, he became one of the world's Top Ten producers of all time, crafting number-one hits for Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, George Michael, Mariah Carey, Cindy Blackman, the list goes on and on. With Multiple hit records, Grammy after Grammy, as a band leader, solo artist, producer, singer/songwriter, spiritual leader, and drummer, touring with Jeff Beck, Journey, and his band, there's nothing the man can't do. We catch up to discuss his latest album “Euphoria” and more. Please welcome Narada Michael Walden back to Drum Channel. Enjoy!

My guest this week again is legendary engineer/producer Ken Scott, who was one of the five engineers for The Beatles, producer/engineer for four of the most revered David Bowie albums, and engineered or produced seminal albums for Elton John, Supertramp, Duran Duran, America, Missing Persons and many more. Ken was also instrumental in giving the sound of progressive jazz a harder edge with his work with Jeff Beck, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Stanley Clarke, and Billy Cobham. As I said during the Part 1 last week, I was lucky enough to work with Ken on his memoir Abbey Road to Ziggy Stardust, we even did a project in the studio together, so I didn't want to cover old ground again during the interview. In Part 2 of the 2 part interview, we spoke about the acts he turned down that went on to become huge, the influence George Martin had on him, working with Bowie, watching Elton write "Rocket Man," how today is like the pre-Beatles era, and much more. I spoke with Ken via Zoom from his home studio in the UK. On the intro I'll take a look at TikTok limited major label music in Australia, and Guitar Center in financial trouble again.
My guest this week is legendary engineer/producer Ken Scott, who has a list of accomplishments and credits that are almost too long to list. After getting his start at Abbey Road Studios as a teenager, Ken went on to become one of the five engineers for The Beatles, as well as for solo projects for John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. Ken was the producer/engineer for four of the most revered David Bowie albums, along with hit albums for Elton John, Supertramp, Duran Duran, America, Missing Persons and many more. He was also instrumental in giving the sound of progressive jazz a harder edge with his work with Jeff Beck, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Stanley Clarke, and Billy Cobham. I was lucky enough to work with Ken on his memoir Abbey Road to Ziggy Stardust that outlined his illustrious career. We even did a project in the studio together so I got to know him pretty well. A lot of the typical questions that Ken would get we already covered in the book, so I tried to go in a slightly different direction during the interview. In Part 1 of the 2 part interview, we spoke about him going back to Abbey Road Studio 2 to record again, his views on immersive audio, finding Bowie outtakes, working in the box, his favorite plugins, his feeling about Autotune, and much more. I spoke with Ken via Zoom from his home studio in the UK. On the intro I'll take a look at how Bandcamp has become a major music platform, and how Universal Audio disconnected its plugins from its hardware. var podscribeEmbedVars = { epId: 84986682, backgroundColor: 'white', font: undefined, fontColor: undefined, speakerFontColor: undefined, height: '600px', showEditButton: false, showSpeakers: true, showTimestamps: true };
