En 1989, naissait au Québec le Superclub Vidéotron, un véritable empire de la location de films et de jeux vidéo qui allait mener à l'ouverture de plus de 150 succursales à travers la province. Dans cette même lancée, les boutiques Microplay voient le jour. Celles-ci appartiennent à Québécor Média, propriétaire du diffuseur Vidéotron et, par extension, des centres de location Superclub Vidéotron. Durant plus de vingt ans, Superclub Vidéotron et Microplay ont connu une forte croissance et ont occupé une place importante dans l'industrie du divertissement québécois.Cependant, l'arrivée des plateformes de diffusion en continu a rapidement bouleversé le marché. Ces services ont rendu les modèles de location physique obsolètes, provoquant une lente mais inévitable chute des Superclub Vidéotron… et, étonnamment, celle des boutiques Microplay. Pourtant, contrairement aux Superclubs, les Microplay ne faisaient aucune location de jeux vidéo : leur modèle reposait entièrement sur la vente au détail.
