Tougher alcohol laws for Auckland, including banning sales in supermarkets and liquor stores after 9pm, could be in place by December. The council designed Local Alcohol Policy is aiming to reduce alcohol harm, and will come up for a council vote at the end of the month. The policy would also see a two-year ban on new bottle stores in the central city and 23 other areas, unless they meet a very high threshold. Sports Clubs and RSAs would also have stop selling alcohol after 1am, while bars and other on-licenses would have to stop at 4am in the CBD and 3am everywhere else. Lawyer and Secretary of Communities Against Alcohol Harm, Dr Grant Hewison told Francesca Rudkin they welcome these changes. He says Auckland, particularly the City Centre faces significant issues around alcohol related harm. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It's feared that already struggling local sports clubs will fold under the weight of new legislation. Incorporated community sport organisations have until the 1st of April 2026 to re-register under the new Incorporated Societies Act 2022, or face involuntary dissolution. Bridget Tunnicliffe reports that many clubs worry they will miss the deadline.
In this episode of "Marketing the Game," we dive into a pressing debate in women's sports: the impact of giving away free tickets. Explore the heartwarming pros, where free tickets can ignite a lifelong passion for the sport and create an electrifying atmosphere in the stadium. But we also navigate the financial reality, delving into concerns like revenue loss and the potential devaluation of the sport. Is there a middle ground that champions athletes, supports growth, and ensures financial sustainability without compromising perceived value? Tune in to explore the complexities and nuances of this important debate in women's sports. Join us as we weigh the options and discuss how to strike a balance that uplifts and empowers. Learn how we've assisted women's sports clubs in navigating this intricate landscape. To find out more, please contact Philip Nordfeldt for the DACH region, Alex Josimovic for APAC, and Palmer Foster for the UK to learn more and get your support.Transcript:Today we continue with our Marketing the Game series. we're exploring a topic that's been sparking debates across the nation – the pros and cons of women's sports clubs giving away free tickets. Let's start with the heartwarming pros that can make you believe in the power of generosity. First and foremost, free tickets can be a game-changer for women's sports clubs. They can fill stadiums with passionate fans, creating an electric atmosphere that players thrive on. Imagine the joy on a young girl's face when she gets her hands on a free ticket. It's not just about that single match; it's about igniting a lifelong passion for the sport. And with this increase in accessibility in women's sports comes greater exposure, and who doesn't like greater exposure. Increased fan attendance is not simply just a statistic; it's the beating heart of women's sports. These fans, new and old, become a part of something bigger, and that sense of belonging can be truly magical. And it is this magic that viewers behold in awe when watching the games on their TV screens or mobiles in the comfort of their homes. Never underestimate the power of a full stadium to transform a match from typical to phenomenal. But, as we delve into the cons, we must navigate the tricky waters of financial reality. One of the most pressing cons is revenue loss. Women's sports clubs, often struggling for financial support, can't afford to give away tickets without feeling the pinch both short term and long. Moreover, the issue of perceived value arises. When something is handed out for free, it may inadvertently imply that it has little worth. Can we afford to devalue the hard work and dedication of these athletes? While free tickets may attract larger crowds, they can lead to a lower perceived value of the sport. If something is free, does it mean it's not worth paying for? Furthermore, sponsorship impacts can be a real concern. Sponsors invest in sports for visibility, and if the stands are full of free ticket holders, the value of that visibility can dwindle. However, before we make our final call, let's reflect on the emotional aspect of this debate. Can we truly quantify the impact of inspiring the next generation of female athletes? When young eyes light up at the sight of their idols, it's a moment of pure inspiration. And what about fan engagement? The heart of any sport is its fans, and inviting more people into the fold can strengthen the bond between players and supporters. But here's the argument: rather than giving away tickets, why not find a balance? Women's sports deserve to...

How will the Communities Minister react?
Youth sports clubs, like other organizations, need money to operate daily. There are many expenses associated with running a club. Likewise, there are plenty of ways for clubs to raise money. Youth sports was a 22-billion-dollar industry in 2020 (even with the pandemic) and is a huge contributor to the economy, both locally and globally. The location of the clubs will definitely determine the different options and how economical it will be for them to create the revenue they are looking for. Money is required to make a club run for various reasons: the money is divided up into a few different areas and is essential to run the club. Most clubs, if they are running properly, do make a profit even if they are called non-profit. Nonprofit organizations cannot distribute its profits to any private individual but they do make a profit! Here are some ways to drive multiple revenue streams year-round: Annual or Monthly Fee (can include insurance, marketing & equipment that is not uniforms) Uniforms Sport photography: parents are always going to pay to have their children's pictures Food: either cooked/baked by a parent or local restaurants Wedding assistant or any other celebration Ornament sale with your team colors: customizable ornaments are amazing and sell very well! Help Squad: List available youth services such as child care, cleaning, dog walking, or other things. Set time blocks and pair up kids with appropriate tasks. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/nadjmat/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/nadjmat/support

If there is one thing that can bring Aussie’s together like nothing else, it’s sports. Cricket, rugby, football, tennis... we love it all, however, the COVID-19 crisis has seen some of our favourite sporting stars left sitting on the sidelines. In fact, a national survey conducted in May and June this year by the Australian Sports Foundation (ASF) found that close to 1 in every 4 local sporting clubs are at risk of closure due to financial strain. The ASF is now running a 15-minute survey until the 18th of December, giving Aussie athletes the chance to tell their story and helping to provide invaluable insights into the toll this pandemic has had on athlete’s health, finances, career and families. Chris Bond, ‘Murder Ball’ Paralympic Gold Medalist and Sports Parntership Manager for the Australian Sports Foundation joins John and Paul to discuss how this survey could be a real game changer for aspiring sports stars. For episode 37 we're learning about the exponential benefits and current progress of the #PHITAct, and why it is so vital to fitness industry growth, with the Vice-Chair of IHRSA and the Owner of Newtown Athletic Club, Jim Worthington. After the recent report published by PHIT America In 2017 - "The Inactivity Pandemic," it should not come as a surprise that Nike, The Cooper Institute, The American Heart Institute, Shape America, & Pop Warner Football are all joining forces to pass the #PHITAct through both the Senate and Congress. As you'll hear on today's show with Jim, this legislation has the potential to massively uplevel our industry reach and help put prevention in our healthcare system. Earlier in 2017, you heard from Bryan O'Rourke in F+T episode #020, about how even with as much as we're doing collectively in the fitness industry to help fight the obesity epidemic, the reality is that the current healthcare model is broken. What we have now isn’t healthcare, it's sick care, and the passage of the #PHITAct will bring legislative power to help change that by getting more people active and healthy than ever before. With this turning of the tide, the #PHITAct will also help Americans save 20-30% on yearly expenses related to physical activity. As an industry professional, we need your help today to make this bill pass. Be sure to tap on your show artwork and click the link: "Ask Congress To Pass #PHITAct." What simple yet effective actions can thousands of fitness leaders in our space take to create more revenue and serve large numbers of brand new members? The answer to that question and much more takeaways for club owners, operators, and fitness professionals in this episode with Jim Worthington. About Jim Worthington Jim Worthington is the owner of the Newtown Athletic Club (NAC) a 250,000 square foot lifestyle club on 22 acres established in 1978 in Newtown, PA. He is also a real-estate developer and a supporter of start-up entrepreneurs. After earning a Bachelor’s degree in 1978 from West Chester University and working as a racquetball pro and club manager, Jim took on an ownership role at the NAC in 1981, building the club to its current status as a Top 100 Club in America for the past 20 years. Mr. Worthington is now the sole owner of the club which is considered the third largest privately owned individual health club in the nation. As a 40-year industry veteran and a member of IHRSA (International Health Racquetball and Sports Association) since its inception, Jim has contributed to countless industry publications, attended every IHRSA conference and now serves on the IHRSA Board of Directors as the Vice Chair. He has pioneered many club concepts such as bundling membership fees, membership integration initiatives and all-inclusive programming. His club has received numerous local and national honors as a reflection of his maverick leadership and vision. Be sure to tap on the show artwork today right from your phone, and click here: "Ask Congress To Pass #PHITAct." IHRSA can only do so much. When it comes to relationships with your Local Senators, State Senators, and Local Congressmen, it's really the obligation of the people in the industry, the club owners, and the operators, to reach out and make this a priority for their representatives. Jim believes this is the biggest opportunity we've ever seen for the fitness industry to grow its participants and change more people's lives. The #PHITAct is far bigger than just our space, it's a way to bring fitness down to the levels of the less fortunate and to those who can't afford a health club membership. It allows for lower-economic citizens to have access to more of the same things that everyone else does. The reality is that not everyone has the ability to attend a fitness facility, and the #PHTAct will make a huge difference for the health of so many who need it most. Power Quotes From Jim "IHRSA can only do so much. When it comes to relationships with your Local Senators or your State Senators and Local Congressmen, it's really the obligation of the people in the industry, the club owners and the operators, to reach out and make this a priority to get them on board with the PHIT Act. Frankly, that's where my frustration lies. I feel like this could be the biggest opportunity for our fitness industry to grow the amount of participants and change people's lives." - Jim Worthington on the Fitness + Technology Podcast "I urge everyone to get out there and make that call to push the PHIT Act over the goal line. If we don't do it this year, I don't know if we're ever going to because we've been talking about this for 10 years." - Jim Worthington on the Fitness + Technology Podcast Resources Mentioned From Jim Ask Congress To Pass #PHITAct Jim Worthington IHRSA Jim Worthington LinkedIn IHRSA facebook IHRSA Twitter IHRSA YouTube IHRSA #PHITAct Toolkit S.482 - PHIT Act of 2017 PHIT America: 2017 Inactivity Pandemic Report FTP Episode #020 Bryan O'Rourke: How Will The #PHITAct Change Our Industry FTP Episode #030 JR Burgess: Medical Fitness For IHRSA & Health Clubs The Opportunity Of An ERA Is Here With Passage of #PASSPHIT Jim's Favorite Book: "Age Wave: How The Most Important Trend Of Our Time Will Change Your Future" FTP Episode #015 Dave Wright: MYZONE & The Current State of Wearables Newtown Athletic Club The 2017 FIT-C Tech Trends Report Rick Caro IHRSA Bryan O'Rourke IHRSA Norm Cates IHRSA John McCarthy IHRSA Helen Durkin IHRSA IHRSA Leadership Fitness Industry Leadership Council - ILC Thanks To Our Outstanding Sponsors Bryan O’Rourke and his family of companies including Vedere Ventures, Integerus Advisors, and many more. In this episode, how do we go about changing the culture within sporting clubs - opening them up to the rich diversity within our communities? How do we deal with sexism, the ableism, the racism, the homophobia and transphobia that puts off so many of us? And what about all the emphasis on the 'economics' and 'market share' - as reasons for change. Isn't there a 'social justice' case for change? Well our guest has plenty of insights into these areas - having studied sporting clubs up close as a researcher and participant. Ryan Storr is a PhD researcher and co-founder of Proud2Play, an Aussie organisation designed for anyone who ever thought there was no place for them in sporting environments. Every week, hundreds of millions of people around the world surrender their emotions; leave them - for a while - in the hands of strangers. They might face dejection or, with luck, jubilation. The US National Basketball association say that less than 1% of fans globally will ever watch a game live. While the Premier League is played in England and Wales, almost half of the fans (470 million of them) live in Asia and Oceania. Mike Williams explains why sports fans do it.
