#877 | Ed and Wayne skip the usual NQAT awards ceremony and dive into the end-of-season mailbag instead. Bruno Fernandes was Player of the Year, obviously. THat's all. Answering questions from listeners, they discuss the club's financial struggle and speculate about the complexities of offloading unwanted players. Concerns over failed transfers, management inefficiencies, and the club's declining global brand are also highlighted. Questions also dive into historical failures in recruitment and ponder the worst players signed by Sir Alex Ferguson. Also, there's a strangely long discussion about who would win a wheelbarrow race among footballing brothers.
I love this game! To anyone who has an interest in sport and finds themselves regularly on social media, this catchphrase is likely to mean something to you, as is the person who coined it. Patrice Evra is one of the most decorated and stand out footballers of the last 20 years. Premier Leagues, Champions Leagues, his success on the pitch most famously with Manchester United is no secret. But as his media profile has shown, there is more to the man than football. There's a drive, focus, and application that runs deep, now being leveraged to build a career in business both in and out of the sport. The value of the athlete investor has never been more topical, and in this special show we explore it in a new way, as we welcome Tommy Fish, his business partner at emerging football tech start-up ‘PLAYER', for a unique insight to how a top athlete can help create a business. PLAYER is tackling one of the biggest challenges in football; the provision of access and opportunity for the sport's brightest young players. Based on Tommy's vision and Patrice's crazy stories, this chat is full of education and entertainment! On today's show we discuss: The Value of the Athlete Investor: Why are more athletes looking to develop their exposure to business opportunities away from the pitch? A deepdive into Pat and Tommy's business ‘PLAYER': The Linkedin for Footballers How can a business best leverage the experiences of someone like Patrice to develop their product and audience? Did players are Manchester United look to invest in businesses and how did Sir Alex Ferguson react to players having a focus away form football? The danger of players never been taught how to manage the vast amount of money they make during their careers. Opportunities to Disrupt Football: Social Media: how the creation of an online presence and personality has provided Patrice with a whole new method of engagement. “Football has changed”...how? What is different now from the days Patrice was playing and is it a good thing? While there is lots good about the football industry, there are many ways the game needs to improve. What is PLAYER doing to be a part of the tech movement disrupting sport? Why the age of social media has created a new kind of footballer. Is there an issue with the emergence of ‘player as brand' and taking influence and control away from management? Creating the Right Mentality: “If you are a lazy person you are in big trouble”. The mentality that makes for the best players also makes for the best business people! Why in the year Manchester United won the Champions League and Premier League, losing the FA Cup is his resounding memory. What does a winning mentality look like and how can you build one? How was the culture of win at all costs instilled at Manchester United and what happened when Ferguson eventually left? When David Moyes was sacked, did the players look at themselves to take responsibility? A huge thank you to our partners RUNNA. Ravel Morrison joins the podcast this week, and might just be the most surprising guest we have ever had on Undr The Cosh. Ravel lifts the lid on the lies, rumours, and misconceptions so many people have about him and why he never lived up to his potential. From a young age, Ravel had eyes on him as he came through the ranks at Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson, where he was widely regarded as the best talent in the academy. With a dressing room full of world-class professionals like Gary Neville, Rio Ferdinand, and Cristiano Ronaldo, it's hard to understand why so much of that talent went unfulfilled. Despite his raw ability, Sam Allardyce managed to get glimpses of his best including that unforgettable goal against Tottenham but after agent disputes, he was forced out the door and once again labelled a “bad egg.” After moving abroad, Ravel hit the lowest point in his career under Simone Inzaghi at Lazio before rediscovering his love for football playing in Mexico. And of course, in true Undr The Cosh fashion, we get the full story behind his obsession with tuna, the infamous incident involving Lee Clark's pond, and why Gary Neville once lost it and smashed his phone. Ravel opens up about the people who lied about him, his beef with Zaha and explains exactly where things went wrong and why a player with his level of talent never fulfilled his full potential. Dave Watson, Everton's most-recent trophy-winning captain, is Chris Beesley's latest guest on Goodison Park: My Home. The centre-half was the Blues' skipper when they defeated Sir Alex Ferguson's Manchester United side 1-0 in the 1995 FA Cup final and recalls an incredible story about what happened to the famous silverware that night after the Wembley victory. Scouser Watson, who grew up on Boundary Street, close to the new Everton Stadium, started his professional career across Stanley Park with Liverpool – for whom his brother Alex later played – but never made a first team appearance before joining Norwich City in 1980. While with the Canaries, he made his England debut, winning his first of 12 caps for the Three Lions, in a 2-0 win over Brazil in the Maracana Stadium before lifting the League Cup the following year. He returned to his home city in 1986 when Howard Kendall snapped him up for Everton for a then club record £900,000 fee and was part of their last League Championship-winning side in his first season at Goodison Park. Now 63, Watson made 528 appearances for the Blues – the third highest in history behind Neville Southall (751) and Brian Labone (534) – and also had a stint as caretaker manager in 1997 following Joe Royle's exit before having a season in charge of Tranmere Rovers in 2001/02 to serve all three of Merseyside's professional football clubs. In this episode, we explore the explosive night of January 25, 1995, when Manchester United's enigmatic French star Eric Cantona delivered one of football's most shocking moments - a kung fu kick aimed at Crystal Palace supporter Matthew Simmons after being sent off at Selhurst Park. What began as a scrappy match with Palace players targeting Cantona with heavy challenges culminated in an incident that transcended sport, becoming a cultural flashpoint that still resonates nearly three decades later. Following his red card for retaliating against Richard Shaw, Cantona's decision to launch himself into the stands created instant hysteria in British media, with headlines declaring it "the night football died of shame." While moral outrage dominated the mainstream narrative, with extensive coverage across newspapers and television, reactions were notably divided. Many fellow players privately sympathized with Cantona, United fans stood firmly behind him, and even some journalists suggested Simmons' reported xenophobic abuse made the Frenchman's reaction understandable in context. The aftermath saw Cantona facing dual punishment - an FA ban until October 1, 1995, far harsher than comparable incidents that season, and a brief prison sentence that was quickly overturned on appeal. It was during this appeal that Cantona delivered his cryptic "when seagulls follow the trawler" press statement, adding another layer of mystique to his already larger-than-life persona. Behind the scenes, Sir Alex Ferguson, initially contemplating Cantona's departure, ultimately made a pivotal trip to Paris to convince his star to remain at Old Trafford. Ferguson's successful intervention preserved what would become one of football's most powerful redemption stories. Cantona's return to action in October 1995 sparked United's revival, culminating in the 1995-96 Double - an achievement that might never have happened had the Frenchman departed. Beyond the trophies, the incident cemented an unbreakable bond between Cantona and United supporters, who appreciated his willingness to defy convention and stand up against perceived injustice. Three decades later, the Selhurst Park incident remains the defining image of Cantona's career, despite his 82 goals and pivotal role in Manchester United's dominance of the early Premier League era. While many would cite league titles or spectacular goals as their proudest moments, Cantona himself views the kick differently, once remarking it was his "best moment" in football. This paradox encapsulates what made Cantona unique - his unflinching authenticity, philosophical outlook, and what Ferguson called his "defiant charisma" created a legacy that transcends mere statistics or silverware. In June 2004, Jose Mourinho made headlines around the world by claiming ‘I think I'm a special one' at his unveiling as Chelsea manager. MANCHESTER UNITED vs ARSENAL is the essential Premier League rivalry for fans of a certain age. These two clubs battled for titles season after season in the early 2000s in what some might call the league's greatest era. Then Arsène Wenger lost his magic touch, Sir Alex Ferguson won the war, and Arsenal fans had to listen to Patrice Evra come out after every encounter between the two and declare that it was "men against boys.” From there, it was a steady decline away from championship contention for the club from North London. When Ferguson left, United had their own downfall, and now they've sunk farther than the eighth-place finish Arsenal endured towards the beginning of manager Mikel Arteta's reign. The Red Devils are in terrible shape after a decade of self-sabotage, cycling through managers and executives and even — with the arrival of Sir Jim Ratcliffe — ownership structures. None of it's helped, and now this week's guest — Manchester United fan and host of Touchline Fracas, Morayo Bamidele — fears his team could be embarrassed at Old Trafford. If you're enjoying the show, please leave us a rating and review! It will help spread the good word. For kickoff times and storylines on all the matches worth your time this weekend, check TheFootballWeekend.com. Hosted on Acast.
