How did you spend World Ocean Day? FutureSwell founders, Alex and Carissa, sit down to share with you all of our WOD adventures with the work we did with community organizations! FutureSwell first joined up with Parley for the Oceans alongside Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii and Ambassadors for Aloha help restore costal habitat and share it. Then we went to Ocean Fest at WaiKai to connect with surfers, beachgoers, and water people to help build pathways toward ocean conservation. Finally, Carissa and Kuleana Coral Restoration taught residents and visitors how to fragment and outplant corals that are heavily affected by the climate crisis. The United Nations Environmental Program recently estimated that "for every square mile of ocean" there are about "46,000 pieces of plastic."Many of us have seen the truly sobering videos and photos of the Pacific garbage patch, which is twice the size of Texas. To help us understand the thorny problem that is plastic pollution in our oceans, we're chatting with Mimi Ausland, a passionate activist and founder of Free the Ocean, an organization dedicated to getting plastics out of our oceans. Episode Show Notes:Learn more about Free the Ocean on their website and Instagram. The Free Rice project's click-to-give model was an inspiration for Mimi in starting Free the Oceans. Mimi works closely with Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii to remove plastic from the ocean. Need another reason to care about ocean health? The majority of our planets oxygen comes from marine plants! Mimi is a fan of compost tumblers We discussed this fascinating story of how Bay Area green waste becomes valuable compost for farms and wineries. Mimi's go-to karaoke song is "Love Story" by Taylor Swift.
Mimi Ausland is the founder of Free the Ocean, a website that gives anyone anywhere the opportunity to have a daily impact on the issue of plastic pollution. The way it works is by simply going to FreetheOcean.com and answering the daily trivia question. Just by doing that you fund the removal of 1 piece of plastic from the ocean and coastlines. Free the Ocean works with Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii, and together they have helped remove over 8.5 million pieces of plastic! They now have 30k+ unique daily visitors and people playing from over 160 countries. Mimi actually started her first passion project at age 12 with a very similar model to Free the Ocean but her mission at the time was to feed animals so she started a website called FreeKibble.com that went viral and was featured on Ellen, Oprah and the Today Show. She then went on to college where she thought she wanted to pursue psychology but instead was confronted with the harsh reality of what our oceans are facing and decided to change paths and create Free the Ocean with the goal of not only cleaning up our oceans but really to work towards a hopeful future. On today’s episode we talk about Mimi’s journey, she walks us through how she identified her need of creating and giving back, her first steps into creating Free the People, she gives us so many great insights into what is happening with our oceans and easy takeaways that we can all implement into our daily lives to reduce plastic consumption and why paying attention to what moves you is the best indicator in figuring out your Active Ingredient.
Join us as we discuss issues around plastic pollution and more holistic perspectives & solutions. Dedicated to cleaning up the shorelines of Hawaii while educating and inspiring others, Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii is doing their part in bettering our oceans. The grassroots organization, located on the island of Oahu, has made it their mission to bring awareness and action against marine debris. They have garnered the support of influential people such as Ellen Degeneres, Jason Momoa, and almost half a million volunteers who work tirelessly to clean our oceans. I was fortunate to sit down with executive director Rafael Bergstrom, who started his career as a pro baseball player. After an injury, Rafael decided he wanted to have a job that was more aligned with his environmental values and would eventually bring him to Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii. Today’s podcast is brought to you by Bento Homes here in Hawaii and we will be discussing some of the most controversial topics within keeping our oceans clean. Our guest today is Kahi Pacarro, the Executive Director and one of the founders of Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii. He is here to share more about what many don’t know but should know about our oceans. Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii is focused on awakening volunteers at their cleanups that the items being removed off of our coastlines are the same items many of us use in our everyday lives. They emphasize that if all we ever do is clean beaches, that’s all we will ever do. The true solution is in stopping the debris from ever being created in the first place. Creating an experience that shocks the volunteer into this recognition is a powerful and proven way towards the change most of us need to make. Checkout their website for more info: www.sustainablecoastlineshawaii.org .
