Send us Fan MailOn the latest episode of The Hot Slice podcast, we chat with Armando DiMeo, owner of Houston-based Coastline Pizzeria. In addition to 12-inch Neapolitan pies, Coastline specializes in grilled pizza. DiMeo explains that he “wanted to create another style of pizza that would … be the opposite of a Neapolitan pizza.” He threw some dough on the grill, and the rest is history … almost. DiMeo tells The Hot Slice that it took him five years to perfect the pizza style, which uses high-gluten flour and a 24-hour ferment in oiled and seasoned sheet trays.Coastline also is innovating when it comes to its rotating seasonal menu. DiMeo shares that anyone at the pizzeria is encouraged to suggest new additions to the craft cocktail, pizza or small plate menu. Not only do staff members get credit on the menu for dreaming up the seasonal dishes, they also earn $1 for each time their item is sold.“It's just about making the team happy – and the customers really see that,” DiMeo tells The Hot Slice, adding that a Cacio e Pepe-inspired Neapolitan pizza was one of the staff suggestions that proved popular with guests. The profit-sharing program has another incentive: building friendly competition among employees.Listen in to this episode to learn more about grilled pizzas, employee-sourced seasonal menu items and more! Take a deep breath. Half the oxygen you just inhaled came from one place, the ocean. But right now, that invisible life support system is sending distress signals. Warmer waters. Emptying nets. Coastlines that no longer look familiar. This World Oceans Day, we explore what happens when the thing we've taken for granted begins to shift and how we can rise to meet that challenge. Alan Morrissey was joined by Dearbhaile O'Hare and Karen Kruger, organisers of the upcoming “Cancer Take A Hike” event taking place in Kilkee on the 13th of June. The group will set off from Diamond Rocks Café and follow the breathtaking Kilkee Cliff Walk, a gentle 12km out-and-back coastal route along one of the most dramatic stretches of the Atlantic coastline. Participants will pass landmarks such as Bishop's Island, St Kee's Well, and the ruins of Dunlicky Castle, with plenty of time to pause, take in the sea views, and enjoy good company along the way. After the hike, there's an optional recovery experience with a sauna, ice bath, or hot tub at An Botháinín Sauna for those who want to unwind and recharge. The event is free to take part in, with donations welcome in support of West Clare Cancer Support. It promises fresh air, connection, and a powerful message at its heart—quite literally, to tell cancer to take a hike. Photo (c) Cancer Take A Hike
Oreti Beach is one of Southland's most iconic stretches of coastline, 26 kilometres in length, the bay lies between the town of Riverton and the outflow of the Aparima River. It's a place made famous by motorcycling legend Burt Munro who used it as his personal speedway while training to set his land speed records. Records that still stand to this day But now there's a growing debate about its future, with locals calling for the beach to be closed at night because of dangerous driving, fires, vandalism and other antisocial behaviour. Local Joyce Kolk joins us to explain what's going on.
Coastal fishing communities around the world are struggling with declining fish stocks. That's because of climate change, environmental degradation and overfishing. But one tree – the humble mangrove – has a superpower that's supporting healthy fisheries in many parts of the world. The majority of fishes we eat worldwide are supported by mangroves: Their roots serve as a nursery for baby fish. So, today on the show, two reporters travel to Cambodia, where they discover why a local fishing solution now plays a crucial role in slowing global warming. Read more about Rebecca Hersher and Ryan Kellman's journey here (and check out their incredible photos). Interested in more climate science? Newfoundland was a treacherous launch site, characterized by ice-packed coastlines, boggy ground, and constant rain. Teams had to ship their aircraft in pieces and assemble them in makeshift aerodromes while waiting for favorable winds. Many contemporaries viewed the mission as suicidal. Harry Hawker and Matt Grieve, flying a small Sopwith, grew impatient and launched into a cloud bank in May, disappearing from sight. When they failed to arrive in Ireland after 30 hours, the world presumed them dead, sparking global grief. Shortly after Hawker's departure, Fred Raynham's attempt ended in a "heart-rending" crash during takeoff. This left the field open for Alcock and Brown, who arrived late with their massive Vickers Vimy bomber. This fabric-and-wood machine successfully carried the duo through relentless North Atlantic clouds until they landed in Ireland, simply declaring they were from "America." (3/4)1923

Co-author Patrick McKenna speaks to John Maytham on CapeTalk about 50 Years On: The Marina da Gama Story, revisiting the original 1970s vision to transform Zandvlei into South Africa’s first major marina residential development. He explores how the Anglo American-backed project was intended to include a yacht harbour, hotels and leisure infrastructure, why it was ultimately scaled back after the company withdrew in 1975, and what Marina da Gama might have looked like if the full plan had been realised along Cape Town’s False Bay coastline. Hello to you listening in Lopez Island, Washington! Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Wednesdays on Whidbey and your host, Diane Wyzga. Why is my Quarter Moon Story Arts logo a lighthouse? I was inspired! Admiralty Head Lighthouse here on Whidbey Island served as a critical navigational guide back in the day of sailing ships traveling from the Pacific Ocean through the treacherous Strait of San Juan de Fuca. Sixteen miles from Admiralty Inlet ship captains could see the white light in the darkness warning them to steer a hard right to starboard, avoid the cliffs, and continue safely south through Puget Sound and on to Seattle. How did the captain know he was seeing Admiralty Head Lighthouse? Each lighthouse - no matter where in the world - has its very own distinctive light pattern, or signature, like an address on a house. Lighthouses mark points of navigation, warn about dangerous coastlines, and guide ships into safe harbor. But harbors are not created equal. Different harbors for different boats. A lighthouse stationed at a harbor entrance doesn't run up and down the coast beckoning all boats to its harbor. It serves a particular sized boat. Lighthouses don't chase boats; why do you chase clients? Question: What is it only you have to offer? Who needs and wants it? Who is meant to be drawn to your harbor? How will you attract your particular client with your own distinctive beacon of light? And, how will they know you are signaling them? CTA: If you could use a hand with your lighthouse questions, email me at info@quartermoonstoryarts.net and we'll get working on the answers. You're always welcome: "Come for the stories - Stay for the magic!" Speaking of magic, I hope you'll subscribe, share a 5-star rating and nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, bring your friends and rellies, and join us! You will have wonderful company as we continue to walk our lives together. AND! Stephen Grootes speaks to Francois Rossouw, CEO Of the Southern African Agricultural Initiative and John Steenhuisen, Minister of Agriculture, about the growing legal battle in which farmers argue that strict state-controlled vaccine rules are delaying South Africa’s foot-and-mouth disease response, threatening livestock, livelihoods, and the wider agricultural economy. In other interviews, Timothy Walker, Senior researcher on maritime security at the ISS talks about the shifting dynamics in global shipping, as vessels increasingly reroute around the Cape of Good Hope amid ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. The diversion of traffic away from traditional routes like the Suez Canal is driving increased activity along Africa’s coastline, positioning the region as a growing bunkering hub, while also highlighting the opportunities and constraints shaping South Africa’s role in this evolving maritime trade landscape. First up on the podcast, freelance journalist Evan Howell traveled to Cape Blossom, Alaska, where the receding coastline has revealed an ancient trove of glacial ice that may have survived for 350,000 years—making it the oldest ice in the Northern Hemisphere. Now researchers just need to figure out how to date it. Next on the show, tracking wolves and ravens in Yellowstone National Park shows the birds don't follow the wolves in hope of a meal, but instead remember and revisit frequent wolf kill sites. Matthias-Claudio Loretto, assistant professor in the Research Institute of Wildlife Ecology at the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna, discusses how this might change the way we think about scavengers' strategies for finding their ephemeral food sources. Finally, Claire Bedbrook, the Helen Hay Whitney and Wu Tsai neuroscience postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University, discusses her work tracking African turquoise killifish over their life span. By capturing behaviors over the course of the fish's entire lives, her team was able to observe behaviors that could be used to predict whether a fish would live a short or long life. Ever wonder what it's like to fly slower than freeway traffic — on purpose? Chancy Arnold is a banner tow pilot flying a Super Cub up and down the San Diego beaches, and in this episode he breaks down everything about the job. From the dive-and-hook pickup technique to four-hour flights strapped into a tiny seat with no breaks, Chancy gives an honest look at one of aviation's most unique time-building gigs. We talk about what it's really like flying at 50 knots indicated (and 15 knots ground speed in a headwind), how he built connections on the FBO ramp that got him the job, the territory system between banner towing companies, and flying over Padres games, golf tournaments, and gender reveals. Chancy also shares why he skipped the CFI route, why IFR was actually his favorite phase of training, and how he's stacking hours toward the airlines. 1 - Are that many people really watching football? Your calls. 110 - Camden County Commissioner Director Lou Cappelli Jr. joins us today as Camden's crime rate has dropped significantly over the last few years. What has contributed to that decrease? Why is Camden going to deploy drones now to combat crime? Why install so many cameras? With most of the same people committing the same crimes over and over again, how important is it to keep those criminals locked away? Is there an affordability issue that the commissioners are drilling down on in Camden? How much is it to hook up utilities in Camden? 120 - Teasing our next guest. 130 - Fox News legal analyst and commentator Gregg Jarrett joins us from sunny Florida today. Do you get to save a parking space you dig out of the snow? Why are things getting so bad in Minnesota? Is it the lack of law enforcement, or more the rhetoric that leftist protestors like Don Lemon are spouting about church goers and ICE agents? Why is Minnesota AG Keith Ellison not helping by going on Deon Lemon's show and not condemning the behavior of the protestors in the Church? 150 - Can Trump change the messaging on affordability? Will Trump supporters ever vote for someone other than him?

On January 11th, Shawn and Garrick provided some exciting news about a potential church building that Coastline can call home. They shared a ton of information at a town hall meeting after church. We know that many weren't able to attend, so they decided to jump on the podcast to share what was shared at the meeting: why this building seems promising, what obstacles are on the horizon, how you can pray with us, and more! This process is long and uncertain, but we want to be transparent, so if you have any questions or thoughts after this episode, please reach out to Shawn or Garrick!
Parenting Anxious Teens | Parenting Teens, Managing Teen Anxiety, Parenting Strategies
Hi Parents! Today's episode is one that many parents of teens have been waiting for, especially if the thought of your child getting behind the wheel brings up anxiety, fear, or a constant urge to intervene. Learning to drive isn't just about passing a test. For teens, it's a major developmental milestone tied to independence, confidence, and responsibility. And for parents, it can feel like one of the most nerve-wracking phases of raising an anxious teen. My guest today is Nigel Tunnacliffe, Co-Founder and CEO of Coastline Academy, the largest driving school in the country and one of the fastest-growing education companies in America. Nigel founded Coastline with a powerful mission: to eradicate car crashes by teaching safe, confident drivers for life. His team has trained over 250,000 teen drivers across multiple states and works closely with parents navigating this exact stage of life. In this conversation, we talk about why parents play such a critical role in their teen's driving education, how parental anxiety can unintentionally impact teen confidence, and what actually helps anxious teens develop healthy habits, calm decision-making, and trust behind the wheel. If you're parenting a teen who's nervous about driving or you're the anxious one, this episode will help you feel more grounded, informed, and confident in how you support them through this milestone.

My guest is Anupa Asokan, executive director of Fish On, an organization working to ensure that coastal communities and the ecosystems they rely on can thrive for generations to come. Fish On is all about empowering the people who know the water best: the anglers, families, and coastal residents whose lives are tied to healthy oceans. Through community-driven advocacy, science-based policy, and a commitment to fairness and access, they're helping shape the future of our fisheries from the ground up.In this conversation, Anupa breaks down what Fish On is and why its mission matters, especially at a time when coastal ecosystems face pressures from climate change, pollution, habitat loss, and outdated management practices. We'll explore their three core priorities: common-sense fishery management, clean water, and equitable access. She also talks about how upstream watershed issues can ripple all the way to our coastlines, and the challenges that diverse and historically marginalized fishing communities face when trying to participate in conservation policy. We talk about the balance between short-term needs and long-term sustainability, what she wishes decision-makers understood right now, and a standout project where Fish On helped change policy by lifting up the voices of fishermen themselves.Contact and connect: https://www.fishon.us/
This week, Traci connects with Renaud Delaquis, Head of Product Marketing at Coastline Academy, the nation's largest driving school scaling across 500+ cities.Spoiler alert: What if your biggest hiring problem was actually a revenue problem in disguise? When Renaud noticed a tiny dip in quality metrics—just 1%—he could've ignored it. Instead, he discovered something most marketing leaders never see: the direct correlation between who you hire and what your customers experience. That realization led him to partner with recruiting and completely rethink how Coastline attracts, screens, and retains driving instructors. What We Cover:– The moment a marketing leader realized recruiting was his problem too– Why a 1% quality drop led to an entirely new hiring system– How to find people who don't know they want the job– The personality trait that actually predicts success (and it's not what you think)– Turning your best employees into organic brand ambassadors– Making the business case to leadership with numbers that stick– Why happy employees are literally your greatest productKey Quote:"The best product that you have are happy employees. When you invest in your best product, your employees, all of your other products will totally start to rise to the occasion." – Renaud DelaquisConnect with Renaud Delaquis:Website: https://www.instagram.com/coastlineacademy Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/coastlineacademyFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/coastlineacademyYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPruykTxAWpwh8i1GK-U1kATikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@coastline.academyRenaud on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/renaud-delaquis/Connect with Traci here:https://linktr.ee/HRTraciDisclaimer: Thoughts, opinions, and statements made on this podcast are not a reflection of the thoughts, opinions, and statements of the Company by whom Traci Chernoff is actively employed. Please note that this episode may contain paid endorsements and advertisements for products or services. On this episode of the HappyCast, we go in-depth with local Houstonian Katy Barber who just tackled the Padre Island National Seashore (PINS) FKT. Located in Texas, and definitely NOT Galveston, this is the 4th longest beach in the WORLD and one of the most isolated places in the country, all tucked away on the largest unprotected barrier island in the world. This is a 65+ mile FKT that traverses the entire length of the beach, and no woman has ever attempted this feat before, and only two men have completed it. We do a deep dive with Katy and her coach and fellow guest, Chad Lasater (who will one day have his own episode as he is a treasure trove of accomplishments). We talk about the logistics, the difficulty of running on a beach, and the dynamics with crewing and dealing with the remote nature of the race. Further yet, this was double the distance Katy has previously ran, so we talk about establishing distance PR's in the process. We also share a few crew stories, as both Chad and Andrew were present for the FKT. Katy's crew also consisted of Kevin Christensen, Regina Massingill, Jaimie (kind of like Cher or Bono), Laura Lundell, and John Kilburn. Join us as we tackle one of the more primitive, remote, and unconventional recaps yet - 65+ miles on nothing but sand! And congratulations on setting the FKT, Katy! It was one hell of a (sandy) adventure. Be sure to subscribe to the podcast wherever you listen, and we always appreciate you leaving a good rate and review. Vet Antivenom Saves Child After Hospital Stock Depleted; Venomous Sea Snake Causes Wildlife Sanctuary Evacuation Jeremy Zakis The segment covers two significant snake-related incidents. A venomous sea snake, rescued from the coastline by a Good Samaritan, was dropped off at the Coffs Wildlife Sanctuary. Because sea snakes panic and become aggressive and unpredictable on land, the sanctuary had to be evacuated for two hours while specialized snake catchers were called in. Separately, an 11-year-old girl bitten by a tiger snake in South Australia was rushed to Port Augusta Hospital, which had run out of antivenom. A quick-thinking doctor secured a vial of antivenom from a local veterinarian, confirming that the antivenom used for animals is effective for treating humans in emergencies, saving the girl's life.

EU FAILURE: 1/4: Nomad Century: How Climate Migration Will Reshape Our World by Gaia Vince (Author) https://www.amazon.com/Nomad-Century-Climate-Migration-Reshape/dp/1250821614 Drought-hit regions bleeding those for whom a rural life has become untenable. Coastlines diminishing year on year. Wildfires and hurricanes leaving widening swaths of destruction. The culprit, most of us accept, is climate change, but not enough of us are confronting one of its biggest, and most present, consequences: a total reshaping of the earth's human geography. As Gaia Vince points out early in Nomad Century, global migration has doubled in the past decade, on track to see literal billions displaced in the coming decades. What exactly is happening, Vince asks? And how will this new great migration reshape us all? In this deeply-reported clarion call, Vince draws on a career of environmental reporting and over two years of travel to the front lines of climate migration across the globe, to tell us how the changes already in play will transform our food, our cities, our politics, and much more. Her findings are answers we all need, now more than ever.
