This week's show features stories from France 24, NHK Japan, and Radio Havana Cuba. http://youthspeaksout.net/swr260612.mp3 (29:00) From FRANCE- First, June 8th was World Ocean Day which was celebrated at the UN with the release of the third in a series of world ocean assessments- it pointed out the need to change course, to cease disrupting fragile ecosystems, and a warning that the Arctic could become ice free in the 2030s. Then three press reviews. First press on the 100 days of the US Israeli war on Iran. Press analysis on the Chinese Presidents visit to North Korea and an attempt to balance Russian influence. Press on the race riots in Belfast following the knife murder of a white irishman by a Sudanese immigrant- many black homes have been torched- Elon Musks anti-immigration agenda is discussed along with rapid rise in the hands of a few multi-billionaires. From JAPAN- The Japanese nuclear regulator released radiation levels across the Fukushima prefecture after 15 years- 30% of the area is still considered unsafe, though this will drop to 20% 15 years from now. The Japanese Defense Ministry is transported a missile launcher to their eastern most island in the Pacific, 2000 km SE from the main island. The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute released their annual report on Monday, pointing out the nuclear armed countries have 12,000 nuclear weapons and a number of countries are expanding their stockpiles. Russian officials have criticized Britain, France, and Germany for their military support of Ukraine. 3 Indian crew members on a tanker in Hormuz were killed when the US military- the Indian Foreign Ministry condemned the attack. Pete Hegseth gave a speech at Guantanamo Prison, continuing the threats to Cuba. From CUBA- A ship arrived in Cuba with 1700 tons of food and other supplies from Mexico and Belize. Cuba mentioned the US propaganda radio station, Radio Marti, aimed at the Cuban island for 41 years. A Congressional research report said that the US military has lost 42 aircraft, worth $2.6 billion, during the first 40 days of the war on Iran. US activist Medea Benjamin claims that the US government is losing its mind with its war on Cuba. Merch - https://nonmembersshop.com/We kick off the episode by celebrating World Ocean Day and establishing a new strict deep-sea mandate: scientists need to completely stop discovering new, terrifying ocean creatures because humanity has officially hit its maximum capacity for unknowns. Erin details her highly specific ocean rules, explaining that she will only step foot in clear water during low tide because anything resembling high-tide seaweed, jellyfish, or a slimy freshwater pond is an absolute scare. Still recovering from our wild Las Vegas weekend and battling a massive wave of Sunday Scaries, Erin recaps a local backyard pig roast shindig she attended.Shifting over to fitness, Erin gives an exciting week seven update on her "Pull-Up Revolution" program. Because traveling threw off her routine, she had to smash multiple workouts back-to-back, leaving her body completely wrecked but yielding massive progress. This progress prompts her to recount an hour-long argument on a Vegas casino floor with triathlete coach Noel Mulkey, who claimed she could do a pull-up right now using "mind over matter".Mike then details a birthday trip to "Activate," a high tech indoor playground that feels like stepping straight into a Mr. Beast or Squid Game challenge. He spent an hour and a half jumping over glowing spy lasers, memorizing patterns on flashing floor tiles, and aggressively chucking balls at asteroids on a screen to clear a team scoreboard. Erin explains that her favorite part of the day is nesting in her couch corner to play Fortnite duos with Dan. We debate the game's massive age demographic and its chaotic mechanics, from dropping out of a flying bus to taking "magical trinkets" off defeated players. In major sports news, we analyze the Enhanced Games dropping a massive announcement: a whopping $10 million bounty for any athlete who can officially break Usain Bolt's legendary 2008 100-meter world record of 9.58 seconds. This leads into a massive wave of track and pop culture news, starting with the International Olympic Committee president going viral for a tone-deaf statement against paying Olympic athletes prize money. We look forward to the tech billionaire funded Athlos women's only track event in New York City this October, and celebrate Flavor Flav securing approval from Las Vegas commissioners to host "She Weekend", a massive, free public block party on the Vegas strip this July to support women's sports. We then dive into the courtroom drama where the Chicago Cubs are suing the owners of the iconic "Wrigley Rooftops" bleachers across the street, attempting to stop them from selling private vantage point tickets after their historical 17% revenue sharing agreement expired in 2024. While the Cubs claim lost revenue, the rooftop owners claim property rights, prompting us to mock the stadium's dry, $20 chicken tenders. We wrap up the episode with a heartwarming "No Bad, No Sad" story about a neighborhood Pet Walk Tour in Fairmont, Philly, where community members gather to spot cats in windows and hand out golden retriever high fives to build community.

It's World Ocean Day today, so what better opportunity to dive into the wonders of the marine world? As we all have heard before, the ocean makes up 70% of the Earth's surface and plays a key role in regulating the planet's climate. So in a world where climate change is wreaking havoc on the marine environment, what can we do to protect it? We speak to Shannon McIntyre Rake, Hope Spots Programme Manager with Mission Blue, about the network of 170 Hope Spots (and counting!) that they're building and how we can all do our part. Ocean conservation often focuses on threats: climate change, overfishing, plastic pollution, deep-sea mining, and political failure. But on World Ocean Day, this episode takes a step back to ask a deeper question: why do we protect the ocean in the first place? I reflect on the emotional, cultural, and personal connections people have with the ocean, from living near the coast to watching whales, exploring tide pools, diving, kayaking, listening to waves, or simply standing beside water and feeling calmer. The episode argues that ocean protection cannot only be about resources, regulations, or crises. It also has to be about love, respect, community, and remembering that the ocean takes care of us. This episode is a reminder that people protect what they love. If we want stronger ocean conservation, we need to rebuild our relationship with the ocean, not just use it. Wengki Ariando: Sea Nomads and the Future of Our Ocean

Talking Indonesia

Play Episode Listen Later May 21, 2026 46:01

Every year on the 8th of June, World Ocean Day calls us to reflect on the vital role our seas and waterways play in sustaining life on Earth. Yet for most of us, the ocean remains something we observe from a distance, and more recently, a source of anxiety as sea levels rise, waters warm, and marine ecosystems collapse under the pressures of the Anthropocene. For Indonesia, a nation that defines itself as a maritime and archipelagic country, this distancing carries a particular irony. Despite the political rhetoric of "returning to the sea" that depicts the ocean as the future of our civilisation especially during Jokowi's administration, Indonesia's relationship with its waters has been largely shaped by an impulse to conquer, control, and extract. It is within this tension that the stories of Indonesia's Sea Nomad peoples become both urgent and instructive. Communities such as the Orang Suku Laut and the Sama-Bajau have maintained deep cultural, social, and economic ties to the ocean across generations. For them, the sea is home, identity, and livelihood, not something to be managed or tamed. Yet these communities are increasingly marginalised, their connection to the sea is systematically eroded for economic development, conservation, and paternalistic policies enacted in the name of their own welfare. In this episode, Dr Clara Siagian speaks with Dr. Wengki Ariando, a scholar-activist from the Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies (KITLV). He is also a part of Sea Nomads Contact Group, a collective of researchers and community representatives with a mission to translate research into advocacy and activisms for the political recognition of Sea Nomads in Southeast Asia. Drawing from more than a decade working with and learning from Sea Nomad communities in Indonesia, Wengki unpacks who Orang Suku Laut and Sama-Bajau are, the nature of their relationship with the sea and the very real threats they face today. Crucially, Wengki also introduces the concept of fluid or rhizomatic territory and Aquapelagos to challenge the dominant, land-based notion of territory as something fixed and bounded, and views the ocean and the land as separate entities. For Sea Nomads, whose lives and identities are organised around movement in water, and between water and land, such conventional territorial frameworks render them invisible and rightless. A rhizomatic understanding of territory, by contrast, opens space for recognising the legitimacy of Sea Nomads' claims to their waters, and with it, the political recognition they are long overdue. In 2026, the Talking Indonesia podcast is co-hosted by Dr Jacqui Baker from Murdoch University, Dr Clara Siagian from the University of College London, Dr Elisabeth Kramer from the University of New South Wales, Dr Jemma Purdey from the Australia-Indonesia Centre, and Tito Ambyo from RMIT.

The need to reconnect to water and rebrand the ‘Big Blue'… World Ocean Day falls on June 8th and for those who haven't heard of this event, it's about “catalyzing collective action for a healthy ocean and a stable climate”. The ocean's role is one of the most important there is, and, water security is a real concern. But, to make such events successful in reaching global goals and targets around our oceans and water, we have to take notice, understand the challenges we face and importantly, be prepared to take action. We met with Amanda Horn, a brand marketer who fell in love with water and found a deep connection, which as she shares in this episode, changed so many areas of her life personally and, professionally when she turned her passion into a circular business looking to solve problems in the beauty industry, with water at the heart. Amanda is a strong advocate for protecting water, raising awareness of the challenges and opportunities and as she says, ‘rebranding big blue'. Water conservation – Ocean conservation – plastic solutions -  waste - water consumption – they are all connected and we have to take responsibility for them, and more importantly understand the challenges and how our behaviors and choices either speed up progress, or slow it down. When Amanda began her journey to build a responsible brand, she didn't realise how epic it would be at every single stage. She shares her learnings from the resources needed, commercial understanding, packaging needs, materials sourcing, collaboration and co-creation and what happens at the end of life of her product to make it truly circular. Join us on this episode as we talk to Amanda about: The power of connecting with water and the parallels between humans and the ocean. The importance of ocean literacy in meeting the global goal of protecting 30% of the world's ocean by 2030. The need to protect water at all costs through increasing our knowledge and conversations around what it is the most important resource we have. The “10 Challenges of the Decade”. How Marketers can make connections through story and emotion as Amanda puts it – “Rebranding the big blue”. Evolving her passion into a circular business – and how understanding every stage of the product lifecycle is critical to not only the product but the story. And here's a rallying call to action for you, our listener to get involved: World Ocean Day  https://worldoceanday.org/about/ in the lead up to World Ocean Day, explore and see what you can do. Amanda also shares her tips!  World Ocean Week  https://oceanweekcan.ca/ if you're in Canada, then you have Ocean Week, which is a public celebration of the ocean from coast to coast. Wherever you are, even if you are nowhere near a body of water, it is connected to your life, so commit to understanding a bit more, raising your awareness and taking steps to be part of the solution. It recently announced that it had raised $100 million for its first fund. Coincidently, today (June 8) is also World Oceans Day, globally recognized by the UN as a day to foster public interest in the protection of the ocean and the sustainable management of its resources.Today's conversation is about the ocean, its critical role in regulating our climate, how humans have been damaging this balance, and what we can do about it.
