Every other breath you take comes from the ocean … How much thought do you give to the products you use to clean your home? We recently took a metaphorical deep dive with Amanda Horn into her love of the ocean as part of World Ocean Day and Ocean Week (in Canada), and how important the ocean and water is to our lives. Following our chat with Amanda, we then we explored toxic free circularity with Paul Arellano Foulkes. In this episode, we continue the theme of caring for our oceans, speaking with Adam Parker over at OceanSaver, a brand on an incredible mission to “save Ocean life from the plastic pollution and harmful chemicals in 28 billion plastic cleaning products created every year.” OceanSaver make plastic-free, plant based cleaning products, and as customers, we can vouch for how good they are! Adam talks about the big picture, how the ocean itself is drowning from overfishing, plastic pollution and harmful chemicals. We discuss the need for solutions and products which do less / no harm and the need and role for us (Marketers), especially those working in the FMCG space, to think about the responsibilities we have and the stories we tell. Adam shares his experience, the approach they take at OceanSaver and the journey they are on to keep making ecofriendly cleaning products accessible, affordable and a no brainer choice for consumers. They also donate 1% of profit for ocean conversation! We love how innovative, creative and vibrant OceanSaver is, so be sure to tune in and, get them on your shopping list, you won't be disappointed. Kind to wallet and the ocean - and very effective. Is there anything more refreshing than being in the ocean? The theme this year is 'awaken new depths'. How perfect. Let's dive in
On June 8th each year we come together as a global community to celebrate World Ocean Day, a date set aside to recognize our relationship with the ocean. Public awareness of ocean issues in the United States barely advances year on year, despite consistent efforts by conservation, ocean, and other environmental organizations like World Ocean Observatory whose mission it is to inform and educate. What is World Ocean Day meant to do? Do we have the will to coalesce around a single issue, to be informed and changed into a voice for change?Learn more at https://worldoceanobservatory.org/world-ocean-radioWorld Ocean Radio offers five-minute weekly insights that dive into ocean science, advocacy and education, hosted by Peter Neill, Director of the W2O, author, and lifelong ocean advocate. The City issued emergency water restriction measures remain in effect following the “Feeder Main” break on Wednesday in the NW. We get an update on the work being done to fix the troubling issue from Mayor Jyoti Gondek. How concerned are you about the health of our oceans? We ‘dive' into the topic as we observe “World Ocean Day” this week with Kurtis Hayne, Director of the “Marine Stewardship Council Program”. Kurtis shares with us the work being done by his organization and defines an interesting new phenomenon known as “Eco Anxiety”. Finally, Calgary has some beautiful green spaces and parks to enjoy and with the weather finally cooperating, it's the perfect time to get outdoors! We catch up with Lucy Poley, Alberta Parks Ambassador, for some recommendations worth visiting, including some little-known “hidden gems”.

The need to reconnect to water and rebrand the ‘Big Blue'… World Ocean Day falls on June 8th and for those who haven't heard of this event, it's about “catalyzing collective action for a healthy ocean and a stable climate”. The ocean's role is one of the most important there is, and, water security is a real concern. But, to make such events successful in reaching global goals and targets around our oceans and water, we have to take notice, understand the challenges we face and importantly, be prepared to take action. We met with Amanda Horn, a brand marketer who fell in love with water and found a deep connection, which as she shares in this episode, changed so many areas of her life personally and, professionally when she turned her passion into a circular business looking to solve problems in the beauty industry, with water at the heart. Amanda is a strong advocate for protecting water, raising awareness of the challenges and opportunities and as she says, ‘rebranding big blue'. Water conservation – Ocean conservation – plastic solutions - waste - water consumption – they are all connected and we have to take responsibility for them, and more importantly understand the challenges and how our behaviors and choices either speed up progress, or slow it down. When Amanda began her journey to build a responsible brand, she didn't realise how epic it would be at every single stage. She shares her learnings from the resources needed, commercial understanding, packaging needs, materials sourcing, collaboration and co-creation and what happens at the end of life of her product to make it truly circular. Join us on this episode as we talk to Amanda about: The power of connecting with water and the parallels between humans and the ocean. The importance of ocean literacy in meeting the global goal of protecting 30% of the world's ocean by 2030. The need to protect water at all costs through increasing our knowledge and conversations around what it is the most important resource we have. The “10 Challenges of the Decade”. How Marketers can make connections through story and emotion as Amanda puts it – “Rebranding the big blue”. Evolving her passion into a circular business – and how understanding every stage of the product lifecycle is critical to not only the product but the story. And here's a rallying call to action for you, our listener to get involved: World Ocean Day https://worldoceanday.org/about/ in the lead up to World Ocean Day, explore and see what you can do. Amanda also shares her tips! World Ocean Week https://oceanweekcan.ca/ if you're in Canada, then you have Ocean Week, which is a public celebration of the ocean from coast to coast. Wherever you are, even if you are nowhere near a body of water, it is connected to your life, so commit to understanding a bit more, raising your awareness and taking steps to be part of the solution. In the wake of World Ocean Day on June 8, this episode examines worsening global conflict around fisheries, and what we can do to address it. Put simply, huge swaths of the world rely on fishing, either for subsistence or income. And when fish become more scarce due to overfishing, climate disruption, or other factors, it creates an opportunity for conflict. Today's guest is Sarah Glaser, who leads the Oceans Futures initiative at WWF. The initiative aims to use the best science and predictive technology to provide an early warning system for future marine conflicts, as well as a set of tools to prevent those conflicts. In this conversation Sarah explains some of the basics about illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing (3:15), shares how climate change has become an accelerant for high-seas conflict (7:57), and discusses how the Oceans Futures initiative is working to address these issues (12:37).

Dr. Julie Pullen is founding partner and chief scientist at Propeller, an early-stage venture fund focused on the intersection of the oceans and climate change. It recently announced that it had raised $100 million for its first fund. Coincidently, today (June 8) is also World Oceans Day, globally recognized by the UN as a day to foster public interest in the protection of the ocean and the sustainable management of its resources.Today's conversation is about the ocean, its critical role in regulating our climate, how humans have been damaging this balance, and what we can do about it. Julie's work is at the intersection of humanity and the oceans, and her expertise spans climate, weather, and hydro science, with a particular focus on high-resolution coastal urban prediction for flooding, heat waves, and other perils.Prior to her role at Propeller, Julie was most recently the climate strategist at Jupiter Intelligence, a startup delivering hyper-local projections of climate impact and business risk. And she's an adjunct research scientist at Columbia's Climate School. She was previously an associate professor in civil, environmental, and ocean engineering at Stevens Institute of Technology, where she organized field studies globally to improve our understanding and prediction of the Earth's system. And we could go on further about her amazing credentials at the Naval Research Laboratory and more, but let's jump into learning from her about our oceans. In this episode, we cover: [2:39] World Ocean Day activities and awareness[4:22] An overview of Propeller and Julie's work[6:16] The reason behind the firm's ocean focus and its scope[8:00] Propeller's ocean investment categories including, carbon, organics, and industrials[10:04] Major challenges and concerns with oceans today[13:00] Implications of warming ocean waters[15:43] Transition points in ocean health that could lead to cascading effects[19:09] The role of venture capital in supporting ocean-based solutions[20:53] A brief overview of marine biogeochemistry[22:52] Solutions aimed at ocean carbon sequestration[25:36] Challenges with measurement and verification[28:43] The role of data simulation[34:13] Fisheries and food security solutions[35:40] Alternative proteins on the market[38:44] Julie's time at Jupiter Intelligence[41:32] Emissions reductions as a wedge to drive necessary change for our oceans[43:30] Ocean-specific pledges like 30x30[44:39] The importance of benthic environments and vital ecosystems[45:59] What Julie's excited for in the ocean industrials space[47:53] How people can get informed and involved in ocean preservationGet connected:Dr. Julie Pullen LinkedIn / TwitterCody SimmsMCJ Podcast / Collective*You can also reach us via email at info@mcjcollective.com, where we encourage you to share your feedback on episodes and suggestions for future topics or guests.Episode recorded on June 1, 2023
Climate Champions plant first 10,000 trees! Plus, it's a Thursday twofer: World Ocean Day & World Oceans Day! And, "The Great Derangement”, by Amitav Ghosh
6th June is World Ocean Day. The United Nations has marked World Oceans Day as it takes the first global step towards a legally binding treaty to regulate plastic. - 6月8日は、世界海洋デー。国連は今年からプラスチックの規制を、法的拘束力のある条約とするために対話を始めました
Trvl Channel hosts Ashlan and Philippe Cousteau join a special World Oceans Day conversation with Mitch Ratcliffe and Newday Impact Investing CEO Doug Heske about the rapidly declining krill population in the Southern Antarctic Ocean. These tiny crustaceans that are the keystone of a critical carbon cycle are threatened with extinction from overharvesting to make heart- and brain-healthy Omega-3 oils and for use as filler in animal feed. Just as humans once hunted whales almost to extinction, krill are being harvested extensively in the Antarctic Southern Ocean, so much so that the species is at risk. Demand for products made from krill has reduced populations by as much as 80% since the 1970s, and they could face losses of another 40% because of the impacts of climate change. Philippe and Ashlan explain how krill power the largest carbon sink on the planet -- it sequesters more CO2 than the Amazon, and share a warning for consumers: avoid krill-based products to avoid contributing to the collapse of the Antarctic food chain and ask for algae-based alternatives. EarthEcho International, the youth ocean education nonprofit Philippe founded, and Newday Impact are collaborating to launch a krill-protection-focused exchange-traded fund that will support public awareness and the development of sustainable alternatives. They encourage young people to join the movement for ocean health at https://joingensea.org/.Krill are tiny, shrimp-like crustaceans that serve as a primary food source for many marine animals, including fish, whales, seals, and penguins in the Antarctic Southern Ocean. Just as humans once hunted whales almost to extinction, krill are being harvested extensively in the Antarctic Southern Ocean, so much so that the species is at risk. Demand for products made from krill has reduced populations by as much as 80% since the 1970s, and they could face a loss of another 40% because of the impacts of climate change. The solution Ashlan and Philippe suggest is a remarkable example of a broad solution that addresses many climate-related problems. As we've heard on previous shows, algae oil is an ingredient in nutritious foods, sustainable fuels, and compostable plastics or fabrics. The introduction of land-based algae farming can support millions of prosperous farmers, especially in the global south, where climate change already makes land too arid for traditional agriculture.Discover more about krill fishing and EarthEcho International at https://www.earthecho.org/ and the Newday Impact Investing Ocean Health ETF (NYSE: AHOY) at https://newdayimpact.com/ocean-health/

Coming out of the rigidity of government, Linzi Hawkin asked herself: How can we find creative and innovative ways to talk about ocean that will engage people and make a greater impact? Her answer came in multiple forms and settings, from running music festivals to developing creative school curricula. As an educator and communicator, she has traveled the world to find new ways to spark conversations about sustainability and conservation. As we approach World Ocean Day on June 8, Linzi is staying busy bringing more blue into the lives of students as a co-founder of @ProtectBlue which works to connect students with the ocean through stories and action, even if they live hundreds of miles from the coast. For example, Protect Blue is shifting the narrative around plastic pollution from focusing only on the conversations from the harmful effects of plastic pollution, for example, to broaden the imagination for designing imagining plastic-free the futures and, while also working on tangible projects right now. Linzi talks with Kate Wing, our Better Worlds Ocean podcast host, about building narratives not about what is wrong with the world, but around what a regenerative future can look like, especially in the ocean. Linzi shares her excitement around the power of surf culture, restoration projects, and innovative new products.
