At a conference in Mexico, one scientist's outburst sparks a global quest to find a ‘golden spike' - the boundary marking the shift into a new geological period dominated by humans, not volcanoes or asteroids. From plastics and concrete to nuclear fallout, the data they uncover reveals a planet profoundly altered. But can they convince their colleagues and the world of the extent of this transformation? Meanwhile, in a small Italian city nestled in the Apennine mountains, a series of low-level tremors raise the question: Is this just a passing phase, or a warning of something much more devastating?

In January 1869, leaders of the Union Pacific and Central Pacific met in Washington, D.C. to discuss the final stretch of construction. For years, the two railroads had been advancing toward each other without a defined location for their tracks to meet. But now, their grading crews were working within sight of each other in Utah. In the frantic race to the finish, it became increasingly difficult to hide the fact that the tracks destined to unite the nation were built on a foundation of corruption.Order your copy of the new American History Tellers book, The Hidden History of the White House, for behind-the-scenes stories of some of the most dramatic events in American history—set right inside the house where it happened.Be the first to know about Wondery's newest podcasts, curated recommendations, and more! In this episode of “The Journey of My Mother's Son” podcast, Sandy and I talk about our trip across the country to Pennsylvania to see our family. I completed my book signing in Cheyenne, Wyoming and we started our trip across the country to Pennsylvania! We had a couple of stops along the way, though.  Our first stop was an unplanned stop at the Archway in Kearney, Nebraska. The Archway is a unique museum that literally extends over Interstate 80 to pay homage to all those who have traveled across its path throughout history. Since ancient times, the route along the Platte River in Nebraska, once called the Great Platte River Road, has served as a migratory pathway across the continent. From the era of the Oregon Trail to the present day, the Archway brings the history of the Great Platte River Road to life. Central to the Archway experience is its historical exhibit, which honors the American spirit of exploration. Utilizing life-sized figures and personal audio guides, the Archway recounts the tale of America's development. Visitors can walk alongside pioneers on the Oregon Trail, observe a Pony Express Station horse exchange, listen to Mark Twain's story of a cross-country stagecoach journey, witness the driving of the “Golden Spike” connecting the nation's railways, and learn about life on the Lincoln Highway at a traveler's campground. Located at Exit 275 on I-80, a key coast-to-coast travel route today, the Archway commemorates the journeys of all adventurers who have traveled the river's route – from those who contributed to our nation's development in the past to those who are shaping our future today. It was an awesome experience, and we're glad that we did it. After The Archway, we made our way to visit our friends, Jason and Sara Brelsfoard in Maroa, Illinois.  We met Jason and Sara back in February when we stayed at the Galveston Island KOA.  We immediately connected and became friends.  We spent two nights with them, and even got to ride in a combine. After our visit with Jason and Sara, we were off to my final book signing and to visit with more friends that we had met in Galveston, Jeff and Jackie Powell, in Centerville, Ohio. We had told our family that we'd be getting back into Pennsylvania on October 8th, but we knew all along that September 26th would be our arrival date.  We spent our first two days back popping in on our family and surprising them.  It was quite fun, but also a little exhausting.

The HBS hosts look for the cause of the Golden Spike. The term “Anthropocene” was coined in the 1980's, although it wasn't until 2000 that Paul Crutzen and Eugene Stoermer suggested that we are living in a new geological epoch marked by the impact of humans on the Earth and its inhabitants. Geological epochs are determined by profound and measurable changes in the rock layers and changes in the fossil record. For example, the end of the last ice age marks the beginning of the Holocene, in which we find an explosion of a new and different fossils and profound changes in the composition of rock layers. There is no question that since that time, humans have expanded their presence and increased their populations. During that time, we have hunted various species of animals to extinction, turned millions of acres of forests, wetlands, and plains into farmland. The burning of fossil fuels has altered our climate in drastic and perhaps irreversible ways. Many scientists and scholars have argued this is why we are in a new geologic epoch. There are, however, reasons to push against this label. Many scholars have pointed out that it is not all of humanity that has had this profound impact, but mostly the well off (mostly white) countries of the global north. Others have argued that the changes are due to capitalism and not human existence as such and have proposed we call it the “capitalocene.” This week, we're rolling up our sleeves to dig into the sediment of the Anthropocene.Full episode notes available at this link:https://hotelbarpodcast.com/podcast/episode-133-whose-anthropocene-------------------If you enjoy Hotel Bar Sessions podcast, please be sure to subscribe and submit a rating/review! As a young boy growing up in New Jersey, a year-end holiday treat was setting up our model railroad. It gave me and my two brothers hours of fun and an opportunity to learn a little about the steam age of railroads. Our first railroad featured Lionel O gauge locomotives and cars.  Later we moved into HO gauge trains, and many years later I had an N gauge layout. That boyhood love of model railroads drove me to visit Golden Spike National Historical Park in northern Utah not far from the Great Salt Lake. That's where, on May 10th, 1869, the Transcontinental Railroad was completed when the Jupiter and No. 119 steam locomotives of the Central Pacific and Union Pacific railroads met head-on. To learn more about those two locomotives, I headed north to Promontory Summit and caught up with Ranger Cole Chisam, who is the engineer who drives the two locomotives at the park. I'll be back in a minute with Cole.

Geologists edge closer to defining the Anthropocene

For human beings, Earth is a supremely human place. A world of concrete, steel, glass, plastic, cars, paved streets and highways, and lots of other human beings, generating mountains of waste. Here and there, pockets of nature for human beings.Dutch chemist Paul Crützen coined a term for Earth's human age — the Anthropocene. Crützen proposed that it be declared a new epoch in Earth history, terminating the one geologists say we've been in for the past 12,000 years, the Holocene. This summer, a scientific panel will shift Crützen's proposal up a notch. The Anthropocene Working Group (AWG) was set up in 2009 by a commission of the International Union of Geological Sciences. Its task — defining the Anthropocene, geologically.Crützen's idea was that the Anthropocene began with the 18th-century Industrial Revolution. In 2019, a decade of research under its belt, the AWG decided it actually began around 1950, at the start of what American environmental historian John McNeill dubbed the Great Acceleration, in the wake of World War II; a period marked by massive fossil-fuel burning, resource extraction, pollution, global trade and population growth, and the parallel rise of atmospheric carbon dioxide, surface temperature, biosphere degradation and so on.The AWG's next task was to identify one spot on Earth where the telltale signs of human activity are best observed in mid-20th-century sediments. The technical term for this is a mouthful — a Global Stratotype Section and Point. The more popular one: a “Golden Spike.”To be precise, that Golden Spike would be the thin sequence of layers in a core pulled from the bottom sediments of a lake, bay or estuary, or from a peat bog, ice sheet, coral reef or stalagmite, somewhere on Earth, containing the chemical and material signatures of human activity dating to the mid-20th century. Key among these — spheroidal carbonaceous particles (fly ash) from coal burning, microplastics, heavy metals, isotopes of carbon and nitrogen associated with fossil fuel burning, and radioactive Plutonium-239 from atmospheric nuclear weapons testing that peaked in the 1950s.After years of investigation, the AWG came up with a list of 12 candidate Golden Spikes — in Japan, China, Canada, the US, Denmark, Italy, Poland, Australia and the Antarctic. Each candidate site assembled a scientific team to study their cores in the minutest detail.Francine McCarthy, lead scientist for Crawford Lake, in southern Ontario, is proud of her sedimentary cores.“We do have the best site,” McCarthy said. “I have to accept some kind of maternal pride.”McCarthy has reason to be proud. Crawford Lake has been recording human activities for thousands of years. That's because it's very deep, and its bottom sediments are permanently isolated. Those sediments consist of many layers, laid down year after year, all precisely dated. They record the history of coal burning, the rise of atmospheric carbon dioxide and atmospheric nuclear weapons tests, all peaking around 1950.So do sediments from the Baltic Sea, Japan's Beppu Bay, Sihailongwan crater lake in China and the Śnieżka peat bog at the heart of Poland's polluted “Black Triangle.” San Francisco Bay estuary cores are rich in invasive species, mercury and SCPs. Coral samples from the Gulf of Mexico and Cairns, Australia, are also competitive. The competition is tense. To be chosen as the Anthropocene's Golden Spike, a candidate site must receive 60% of votes from the AWG's 23 voting members. Multiple rounds of voting have taken place over the past year.As the AWG prepares to announce its choice, prominent geologists disagree that the Holocene Epoch ended, and the Anthropocene began, a mere 70 years ago.“In geological terms, that's today. It's just yesterday morning,” said Phil Gibbard, a geologist at Cambridge University. ”We have no clue about, seen from thousands of years in the future, whether this would be more than a blip.”Only time will tell if the Anthropocene is a blip, said Simon Turner, AWG's secretary. Turner, standing in a hallway at University College London, around the corner from the geology department, reflects on the popularity of the Anthropocene idea in nonscientific circles.“The thing with the Anthropocene, people get it,” Turner said. “They get the idea of, like, human activity on the planet. The Holocene … I can probably pull someone over here now and say, 'have you heard of the Holocene?' And they will not have heard of it … and geology is just down the corner, so you would hope someone has.”The Anthropocene Working Group will announce its winning Golden Spike sometime this summer, or in the early fall, in Berlin. Its proposal will then pass up the geo-bureaucratic hierarchy — first to the Subcommission on Quaternary Stratigraphy, then the International Commission on Stratigraphy and finally, the International Union of Geological Sciences. However, approval of that Golden Spike — either as the base of a new epoch, the Anthropocene, or just the latest stage of the Holocene (in which case, it would be named after its Golden Spike; the Crawfordian, for instance) — could take years.

“Honeymoon Suite” Hailing from Leeds, Katie Harkin was the co-founder of the band Sky Larkin—an outfit she put together with her childhood pal Nestor Matthews while they were attending university. They signed to the London indie Wichita Recordings, which was home to The Cribs, Bloc Party, Best Coast and My Morning Jacket and put out three great albums, including the 2009 classic The Golden Spike. That band lasted almost ten years and while they were at it, Harkin started to get recruited for other projects, like touring with Wild Beasts in 2011 for their Smother record. Post Sky Larkin she became a touring member of Sleater-Kinney—you can hear her on the Live in Paris album— and she went on to also be a touring member of Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile's band when they toured the Lotta Sea Lice record. She toured again with Barnett a year later and soon after she put out her first solo album under the name Harkin. She put out her second Harkin effort this summer—titled Honeymoon Suite, it's dreamy, ethereal and decidedly catchy. The compositions are textured and nuanced, the instrumentation is layered and rich and Harkin's vocals float with precision and finesse. Harkin is never not busy—she's worked with everyone from Waxahatchee to comic Josie Long to Turner Prize-winning filmmaker Helen Martin We got her in between all the business and she was just lovely. www.handmirror.bandcamp.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.bombshellradio.com www.alexgreenonline.com Stereo Embers: Twitter: @emberseditor IG: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

In 1869, the Transcontinental Railroad was completed with the driving of the Golden Spike. The railroad ran from Omaha in Nebraska Territory to Sacramento in California. It was the first means of mass transportation to cross the country. And as the first, the Transcontinental Railroad overshadowed the later Northern Pacific. The Northern Pacific, however, has its own inspiring story. It also reached the far west, but had to overcome financial challenges to do it without government loans.

A New Song Every Day For 10 Years (0:45)Guest: Jonathan Mann, Musician and SongwriterFor more than 10 years, Jonathan Mann has written a new song every day. Every single day. Originally this was just going to be a one-month. It was just a whim. But after he wrote a new song every day in the month of January 2009, he just wasn't finished. So, he kept going. Thousands of songs later, he's still going. Along the way he's learned a lot about the process of creativity. Why the West is Obsessed with WWII (22:40)Guest: Keith Lowe, WWII Historian, Author of “The Fear and the Freedom: How the Second World War Changed Us”Of all the conflicts America has been involved in, World War II seems to get the most attention from authors, academics, politicians and Hollywood. “The Greatest Generation” as American WWII veterans are known, is quickly shrinking as the 75 anniversary of the end of World War II approaches. What is it about that war and those veterans that captures the imagination and stokes such admiration? Biologist Pamela Weathers Has Discovered a New, Cost-Efficient Cure for Malaria (36:32)Guest: Pamela Weathers, Professor of Biology and Biotechnology, Worcester Polytechnic InstituteEfforts to fight malaria have stalled out in recent years, according to the World Health Organization, and one of the reasons is drug resistance. The parasite that causes malaria is developing defenses against the best medicines currently available to treat the illness. The expense of those medicines is another challenge facing the global malaria response. Both of the cost and drug resistant problems might be solved by a plant.  Biologist Pamela Weathers has found evidence that drying and grinding the leaves of a certain plant may treat malaria better than current drugs.  The Chinese Workers Who Built America's Railroad (49:09)Guest: Gordon H. Chang, Professor of American History, Stanford University, Author of “Ghosts of Gold Mountain: The Epic Story of the Chinese Who Built the Transcontinental Railroad”The Transcontinental railroad was a triumph of American grit and ingenuity when it was completed 150 years ago. But the work was done largely by immigrant workers –and the most technically difficult stretches of rail through the Sierra Nevada mountains were laid by workers from China. Those workers, however, were almost invisible at the grand Golden Spike ceremony commemorating the railroad's completion in 1869.  Adventures of a Theme Park Journalist (1:09:47)Guest: Robert Niles, Editor of ThemeParkInsider.com and Contributing Columnist for the Orange County RegisterTheme parks can be magical with that thrill of anticipation when you're about to drop on a rollercoaster, spending time with family, and, of course, the nostalgia. But theme parks can also be a nightmare with the hordes of people, crying children, and overpriced food. New Research May Allow Diagnosis of CTE in Living People (1:21:54)Guest: Robert Stern, Co-Founder and Director of Clinical Research, Boston University CTE CenterRepeated head trauma ranging from full-blown concussions to the constant rattling of the brain inside the skull that can happen during impact sports, is believed to be the culprit in a disease called Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy–or CTE. It was first diagnosed in a former NFL player 17 years ago and over 100 athletes, military veterans and victims of abuse have been diagnosed with it since. But the problem is, doctors can only diagnose CTE by cutting open a person's brain after they've died.

Uinta Brewing Company opened their doors in 1993 with a sole focus on craft brewing -- no pubs or bars, just really great beer. Salt Lake City wasn't known as a brewing mecca, and previous breweries had all opened with a restaurant attached. So to outsiders, co-founders Will Hamill and Dell Vance were taking a chance, but they had an ace up their sleeve: they knew how to make really, really good beer. What originally began as Great Basin Brewing took root in a rented out mechanical shop with three primary beers. Cutthroat, Golden Spike, and Kings Peak. These three “founding beers” helped Uinta grow throughout the local Salt Lake City and Utah market, and led to a slow and steady expansion. In 2010, the craft brew market exploded. What was originally a hobby and passion for a small niche of the beer-drinking market suddenly became a national obsession, and Uinta's shadow loomed over the competition. They were in the craft brew market before such a market truly existed, and they had the skill, expertise, and consistency to show how craft beer was meant to be done. 23 years, 30 or so beers, and thousands of stores later, Uinta Brewing Company has grown to be the 38th largest craft brewing company in the country. Will Hamill joins us on the podcast today to share the passionate and unique beginnings of Uinta Brewing Company. His love for the environment and flavorful brews have led to a sustainably run company that operates within strict Utah liquor laws with swift and nimble creativity.—This episode of The Utah Foodie was hosted by Chase Murdock and produced by Ryan Samanka.
