Hey everyone, I'm back! I spoke with elite OCR athlete Javier Escobar this week all about his 100-mile outing at World's Toughest Mudder last fall, his training, and how he stays motivated. We begin by talking about his 2019 WTM experience, and how it felt to reach 100 miles. He tells me about his progression from 35 miles at his first WTM to 100 miles at his latest. He talks about how his training program has improved his performance, and the specific training and movements he's been working on. Javier and I discuss how he stays motivated during this time, he tells me his least favorite thing to do during training, and we chat about our rivalry during Toughest Mudder West last year. He then tells me about his experience running the UltraVirus 12 Hour Race, and he may or may not have convinced me to run the next one.
The last Toughest Mudder of 2019 was last week, just outside Las Vegas, Nevada. Toughest Mudder West was held at the same venue World's Toughest Mudder was held from 2014-2017. The men's and women's winners of Toughest Mudder West are Jake Ramsby and Jennifer Lynn. Jake and Jennifer join the show to talk about their race, their plans for World's Toughest Mudder, and what they thought about the "Dizzy Bat" penalty for Electroshock Therapy. Before he talks with them though, Will talks about his disappointing race at Toughest Mudder West and how he plans to run 50 miles at World's Toughest Mudder 2019. OCR athlete Deanna Brasz joins me on the podcast this week to talk all about Toughest Mudder, endurance racing and mental strength! Deanna starts by sharing her background and how she got into OCR, and tells me why she primarily sticks to Tough Mudder. We then talk about the recent Toughest Mudder West where she finished in fifth place for the women, and the unexpected challenges of that race. She also tells me how this Toughest Mudder compares to the many other that she has run before. Deanna then tells me about why she tends to lean towards endurance races, and the mental attitude behind it. We go over details like her pit strategy and nutrition, and she shares what it's like dealing with exercise-induced asthma during these races. We also discuss mental strength, and Deanna tells me about her World's Toughest Mudder experience last year. She shares what she's been focusing on with training, and what specific techniques she's been using to improve her upper body strength.
Kris Mendoza is one of seven men to run 100 miles or more at World's Toughest Mudder. He is also one of the only seven men to ever win a Toughest Mudder race. He won Toughest Mudder West at Norcal recently. Kris talks about his race and how it felt to win the race surrounded by his friends and family. He also shares good advice on problem solving during long endurance events such as Toughest Mudder and World's Toughest Mudder. Before we talk with Kris we revisit the new Age Groups for WTM 2018 with a unique idea from Katelyn Ritter of the Obstacle Running Adventures podcast and we debut a new segment of the show "You're So Smart". Why? Because you're so smart. We also give away another pair of Merrell Trail Running shoes. Have you entered to win yet? It's free. Heather Bode spent all day at the first ever daytime Toughest Mudder, at Toughest Mudder West in Sonoma, California. We talk about the differences between a Toughest Mudder during the day and one at night. What parts were better? What parts were worse? If Heather had the power, would she make Toughest Mudder a day or a night event? Before we talk with Heather we talk about the Toughest Mudder West winners and all of the Elite Contenders to come out of the weekend. There were plenty of familiar faces to those that follow the sport. Two big announcements in this episode: 1) We are giving away five pair (pairs?) of Merrell Trail Running Shoes in our next five episodes. Text TOUGH to 228-28 to be entered to win. 2) With WTM less than a month away, Will is scaling way back on social media to focus on the podcast. He needs five to ten people to join his "World's Toughest Social Media Team" to get the word out about the podcast and about new episodes. Live from the Tough Mudder weekend in Sonoma, this week's episode is full of interviews from athletes at the Tougher Mudder wave, the Toughest Mudder West race, and race director Eli Hutchison. I spoke with Lauren Taksa and Nick O'Sullivan on Saturday all about their respective wins at the Tougher Mudder race, and they give us some insight into the course and the competition. Then I spoke with Trevor Cichosz, Rea Kolbl, Allison Tai, and Kris Mendoza after the Toughest Mudder race (shortly after I had finished my own) all about the competition, how the daytime Toughest Mudder compared to the races at night, what they thought of the course, and more. Lastly, I spoke with Eli Hutchison from TMHQ all about Toughest and about the many changes Tough Mudder is making to their 2019 season.

Heather Heaton did her first World’s Toughest Mudder in 2014. She went in knowing nothing. After taking her lumps from the course and the sandstorm she joined the World’s Toughest community online and came back ready for anything her next time. Heather is a member of Team Three Rex. They are best known for their WTM Pit Crew headband fundraiser. In 2017 they sold 500 headbands with all the proceeds going to charity. Before we talk with Heather we talk about the race that wasn’t. Toughest Mudder West is this weekend. This is the first Toughest Mudder of the eight-race series for 2018. Deanna Brasz and I talk about the course, the obstacles, and what people can expect from this cold, difficult race. Deanna was one of the stars of Tougher Mudder in 2017. She ran 10 Tougher Mudders, with seven podiums, and four first place finishes. Three times last year she ran Tougher on Saturday morning and then ran the eight-hour Toughest Mudder on Saturday night. Before we talk with Deanna, we talk about the elite competition at Toughest Mudder West. On the men’s side Ryan Atkins is the heavy favorite. He will face competition from Kris Mendoza, Glenn Racz, and Tyler Nash, as well a few possible surprises. On the women’s side, four reigning champions will face off. World’s Toughest Mudder champion Rea Kolbl will face off against Toughest Mudder series champion Allison Tai, Spartan World Champion Lindsay Webster, and Spartan Ultrabeast World Champion Morgan Mckay. --- World's Toughest Podcast is excited to partner with Merrell again to give away a pair of shoes every month to listeners of the show.
