Then I spoke with Trevor Cichosz, Rea Kolbl, Allison Tai, and Kris Mendoza after the Toughest Mudder race (shortly after I had finished my own) all about the competition, how the daytime Toughest Mudder compared to the races at night, what they thought of the course, and more. Lastly, I spoke with Eli Hutchison from TMHQ all about Toughest and about the many changes Tough Mudder is making to their 2019 season.

We are halfway through the Toughest Mudder season, with four of the eight Toughest and World's Toughest events completed. In today's episode, we talk about each Toughest Mudder so far this year. We compare each Toughest with each other and get a preliminary answer to the question: "Which Toughest is the toughest Toughest?". We also talk with a podium finisher from each of the three most recent Toughest Mudder races. Tom Tweddell finished second at Toughest Mudder UK. He ran 45 miles in 7:23, one minute behind the first place Tristan Steed. Lachlan Dansie finished first at Toughest Mudder Australia. He ran 45 miles in 8:18. Lachlan has won the Australia-based 24 hour Enduro Race four years running. Kristopher Mendoza finished second at Toughest Mudder Midwest. He ran 50 miles in 8:06, 12 minutes behind the first place Ryan Atkins. 12 minutes is the closest anyone has come to catching Atkins at a Toughest Mudder. This is a loooong episode. Toughest Mudder West is this weekend. This is the first Toughest Mudder of the eight-race series for 2018. Deanna Brasz and I talk about the course, the obstacles, and what people can expect from this cold, difficult race. Deanna was one of the stars of Tougher Mudder in 2017. She ran 10 Tougher Mudders, with seven podiums, and four first place finishes. Three times last year she ran Tougher on Saturday morning and then ran the eight-hour Toughest Mudder on Saturday night. Before we talk with Deanna, we talk about the elite competition at Toughest Mudder West. On the men’s side Ryan Atkins is the heavy favorite. He will face competition from Kris Mendoza, Glenn Racz, and Tyler Nash, as well a few possible surprises. On the women’s side, four reigning champions will face off. TMHQ hosts a large brunch the day after World’s Toughest Mudder. It’s a celebration of the event, the winners, and the community. After brunch Will sat down with Sue Harvey Brown, Kris Mendoza, and Kris’ parents, Katie and Danny Mendoza.   As part of her job for Merrell Sue is the liaison to Tough Mudder and the WTM Community. But she’s also a part of the community. She ran two Toughest Mudders in 2017 as well as World’s Toughest Mudder. She talks about her experience on the course as well as what Merrell has coming up in 2018.   Kris Mendoza is one of only seven people on the planet who have run 100 miles at WTM. He won 3rd place at WTM 2016 and was part of Team USA 8 that ran 120 miles at WTM 2017. He is the only OCR athlete we know of with his own theme song.   Katie and Danny Mendoza are Kristopher’s parents. They worked pit crew for Kris and his team. They talk about how proud they are of their son, but also how it feels as a parent to know your son is out on the course freezing cold and suffering.   They gave Will one of their limited edition DOZA hats. He wears it everywhere now.     --- If you'd like to join the World’s Toughest Podcast Newsletter, text the word TOUGH to 228-28, or email WorldsToughestPodcast@gmail.com with SUBSCRIBE in the subject line and your 1)Name, 2)Email Address and 3)Cell Phone in the body of the email.   What do you think of the podcast? With World's Toughest Mudder only nine days away, this week's episode(s) are dedicated to Tough Mudder's pinnacle 24-hour event. From discussing the top competition, to tips, to the mindset needed to complete the grueling 24 hours, I brought in five experienced World's Toughest Mudder competitors to share their thoughts about this event. In Part two, I talk to Kris Mendoza, Will Hicks, and Amanda "Pinky" Neil. Kris is an elite OCR athlete who placed 3rd at World's Toughest Mudder in 2016 with 100 miles. Kris and I discuss the upcoming WTM move, he talks about his switch from a two-person team to a relay team and we talk about the relay format overall. We also chat about the community on the course, variety in OCR, and Kris shares how WTM got him launched into OCR, his biggest challenge at WTM, and how it felt to hit 100 miles last year. Will Hicks is a WTM veteran and expert, and the host of the World's Toughest Podcast. He's been following the Toughest competition closely leading up to World's Toughest Mudder, so we discuss the elite competition and his predictions for the top contenders. We also talk about the overall atmosphere of WTM, how to push past the dark moments out on the course, goals, and he shares some last-minute tips. Amanda "Pinky" Neil is a 4-time WTM veteran and a well-known figure in the community (and the first one to provide us with her version of puzzle pieces this year). We talk about all sorts of tips, from shoes to wetsuits to pit stops, as well as talk about how she got started with WTM, and she reminisces on past years. We also talk about the contender category, how WTM has changed over the years, and teamwork on the course.

Before we get into the Toughest Philly recap information Will talks about Ian Panter and the car accident he was in as he was leaving the Saturday morning Tough Mudder course. He spends some time talking with Trevor Cichosz, Lou Fisher, Stefanie Bishop, John Fagan, Jim “Da Goat” Campbell, Keith Allen, Joel Forsyth, and Melissa “Sharkbait” Dugan. Da Goat and Sharkbait are on this podcast as often as Will Hicks lately. As we start talking about Philly, we talk about the Philly results and stats, as well as discussing the Toughest Mudder series as a whole. Philly had 29% of the field qualify as contenders, Europe had 33%, Atlanta had 61%, and LA had 46%. Total contender numbers so far: 2,272 people have run Toughest Mudder. 885 have completed 25 miles. 39% have become contenders. We have a conversation with Allison Tai, Kevin Given, Alex “Chikorita” Roudayna, Kevin “Bubbles” Gregory, Sara Knight, Jordan McDougal, and Stefanie Bishop. Allison Tai won first place at Toughest Philly. If you’d like to hear more from Allison, check out episode 17 of the World’s Toughest Podcast. Kevin Given ran Toughest Philly this weekend. You’ll recognize him on course in his straw cowboy hat. Chikorita won third place at Toughest Philly and has qualified as an Elite Contender three times. She will make some noise this year at World’s Toughest Mudder. Kevin Gregory has the nickname “Bubbles”. If you listen to his whole call with Will you’ll find out why. Sara Knight is one of two women (with Sharkbait) who have run every Toughest Mudder so far. She and Chad Trammell are the only two people to qualify as an Elite Contender in more than one country. Jordan McDougal won second place at Toughest Mudder Philly. He has a background in ultra-running. This is his first Toughest Mudder event. Stefanie Bishop is the reigning World’s Toughest Mudder. She needs no introduction. You introduce yourself to her. That’s not her job. This episode is almost two hours long. What do you think about that? We'll talk about this exciting new project, why Philadelphia is the perfect setting for it, why we need a film like this right now, and the ways in which the community can get involved.   Check out Americano on the web:    Website:  http://americanoshortfilm.comFacebook:  https://www.facebook.com/AmericanoMovieIG:  @americanofilm ABOUT AMERICANO:  Americano is a short, independent film written and directed by Tim Viola. Inspired by the hope and sacrifice of the American dream, Viola wanted to capture what the true core of this idea is and to remind Americans of the promise that lies in every individual.
