**Trigger Warning: This episode talks about electroshock therapy and suicide. If you are suicidal, please call/text/chat 988** My friend Adam joins us to share his story of coming out in the early 90's in a church where we generally believed that “something had gone wrong” with someone having same-sex attraction that could be identified and then ‘fixed” through conversation therapy and in the case of Adam (and others) electroshock therapy—and increased spiritual practices (prayer, fasting, church attendance). Adam shares his heart wrenching story of wanting to be a “good Mormon boy” and doing anything asked of him over a 5-year period to be straight and root out the “deviant nature” of his same-sex attraction. Adam takes us back to the 70s/80s/90s to what was being written in BYU publications and said by church leaders about homosexuals. Adam talks about how we "can't heal without addressing the past”. Adam talks about his plans for suicide, delaying those plans for one day, and then leaving the Church for a more understanding/supportive environment. Adam talks about how his suicidal ideation ended in his new environment. Adam talks about finding his husband and their nearly 24 years together. Adam talks about how he “always had a testimony” and spiritual impressions to go back to church a few years ago (Adam is no longer a member). He talks about his loving/accepting Bishop and ward. He talks about how he loves his husband and the goodness of their marriage and also how the LDS church is his spiritual home. Adam (who spent two months writing his story for the podcast) gives us insights into the crushing pain/shame of conversation/electroshock therapy. I was brought to tears several times during the podcast. I was also brought to tears with Adam's courage to walk back into an LDS chapel. I was deeply impressed with the delicate line Adam walked in the podcast of being true to his story/pain and also showing grace to church leaders/others. Adam's story brings helps us understand where we once were as a Church, the progress we have made, and help us all consider how to better love, validate, heal, and support our LGBTQ friends. It also helps us understand our past so we can talk about, learn, not make the same mistakes, and heal from our past. Thank you, Adam, for being alive, building a life with your husband, keeping God in your life, and sharing your story. Your story helps parents, allies, and local leaders—"when we know better, we do better” (Dr. Brene Brown). It also helps younger LGBTQ Latter-day Saints as they make their way forward. One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest by Ken Kesey Part 4 chapter 2, narrated by Isaac BirchallMcMurphy and Chief Bromden have been sent up to the disturbed ward, the are crazed men all over the place, and there are mutterings and gnashing of teeth whispering all around. In the Day room on disturbed, McMurphy tries to establish himself as Top Dog, but it's different up there, and the straight jackets don't really help. McMurphy starts telling the men about the fight with the Aides, but as time goes on their wounds start to hurt more and more. They are eventually taken into the nurse's ward, and it feel strange for the two to be treated with respect and care. The nurse asks who attacked them, and after they answer, she tells them that she feels that War Nurses shouldn't be able to reign supreme over their wards; they want to run them like war hospitals. Then then goes on to say that both McMurphy and Chief Bromden won't be staying too long, Nurse Ratched will determine the length of their stay. There is a huge alarm that sounds in the morning to wake the patients, and McMurphy and Bromden are called to the nurse's station. When they get there, they are given 3 sedative pills. Both the men refuse their tablets. After a couple of minutes or so, the Big Nurse and the 2 Aides that were beaten up arrive, and Nurse Ratched tells McMurphy that she has decided that he should be Subject to Electro-Shock Therapy, unless he could apologise for what he did. McMurphy starts making jokes about what the nurse is asking him to do. Both McMurphy and Bromden are led over to the EST room, and there is a sound behind the door like a swarm of bees taking off. They are led into the room and McMurphy can see that Chief Bromden is afraid, so he offers to get shocked first, laying on the cross shaped table, and wearing a crown of silver thorns. SHOCK… Then it is the chief's turn…Subscribe to theshow https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/the-essential-reads/subscribeGet SurfShark andprotect yourself online today VPN: https://get.surfshark.net/aff_c?offer_id=926&aff_id=20389 Antivirus: https://get.surfshark.net/aff_c?offer_id=934&aff_id=20389 Get data brokers tostop selling your information with: Incogni: https://get.incogni.io/aff_c?offer_id=1219&aff_id=20389 *COMIC* By @Valenangelr https://www.instagram.com/valenangelr *SOCIAL*INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/theessentialreads TWITTER: http://twitter.com/isaacbirchall98 KO-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/theessentialreads STORE: https://the-essential-reads.myshopify.com/Support the showThank you so much for listening, if you want to support the me go to any of these links :)*Social*SHOPIFY: https://the-essential-reads.myshopify.com/INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/theessentialreadsTWITTER: http://twitter.com/isaacbirchall98Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/theessentialreads

One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest by Ken Kesey Part 1 chapter 7, narrated by Isaac BirchallHarding and McMurphy continue to go at it. McMurphy tries to convince the men that they aren't Rabbits, but are men, who can be powerful, and can fight against Nurse Ratched's attacks. Billy Bibbit starts up, stating that the Nurse's tactic of staying silent makes all of the men too nervous to fight back. McMurphy states that they could always just give joke answers or tell her to get lost. The other patients continue to argue with McMurphy, and eventually Harding tells him about the greater tools in the Big Nurse's belt, the Electro-Shock Therapy machine, and the worse of all, the Lobotomy. If worse comes to worst, you will be turned into a zombie that can't do anything but be afraid of its own shadow. McMurphy then asks why the men don't take a vote; if the doctor was going on about letting the patients run their own ward, why don't they act upon it. McMurphy then goes on to say that the first thing he noticed about the place was that no one was laughing… Once you lose your laugh, you lose your soul…After more bickering and debating McMurphy finally concludes. He is going to challenge the Big Nurse at her own game, and he makes a bet with the patients that he is going to make the Big Nurse break before his first week on the ward is up.Subscribe to the show https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/the-essential-reads/subscribeGet SurfShark and protect yourself online today VPN: https://get.surfshark.net/aff_c?offer_id=926&aff_id=20389Antivirus: https://get.surfshark.net/aff_c?offer_id=934&aff_id=20389 Get data brokers to stop selling your information with: Incogni: https://get.incogni.io/aff_c?offer_id=1219&aff_id=20389*COMIC* By @Valenangelr https://www.instagram.com/valenangelr*SOCIAL* INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/theessentialreadsTWITTER: http://twitter.com/isaacbirchall98 KO-Fi:https://ko-fi.com/theessentialreads STORE: https://the-essential-reads.myshopify.com/Support the showThank you so much for listening, if you want to support the me go to any of these links :)*Social*SHOPIFY: https://the-essential-reads.myshopify.com/INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/theessentialreadsTWITTER: http://twitter.com/isaacbirchall98Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/theessentialreads
One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest by Ken Kesey Part 1 chapter 3. narrated by Isaac BirchallThe new man takes a look around at the inmates of the hospital. They are playing card games and smoking, and they whisper to each other. No one ever laughs though. The room is separated into 2 sections, Acutes, those treatable, and the Chronics, those considered too far gone to be one day released. They narrator goes to explain how some of the patients came in as Acutes and were then made Chronics by the treatments like Electro-Shock Therapy and lobotomies. The Aides make fun of the Chronics as they know that nothing can be done about it; the Chronics are too far gone to fight back. Chief Bromden goes to say that he has been on the ward longer than anyone but the head nurse and adds that he came in just after the 2nd World War. The New guy walks around the Ward, taking it all in. He makes the men feel uncomfortable and calls out asking who “The Bull Goose Loony” is. McMurphy asks to speak to the craziest person on the ward as he wants to straighten out who the leader is. Billy Bibbit announces that Harding is the leader as he is the leader of “Patient's Council.” McMurphy then has a “Stand-off” with Harding, and McMurphy establishes himself as the Top Man on the ward. After this, McMurphy starts telling the men about his history of incarceration, and how he is a habitual gambler. McMurphy then goes around and shakes hands with every patient on the Ward. When he gets to Bromden, he starts to make jokes about the chief's size, but everyone on the ward tells McMurphy that he is deaf and that he cannot speak either. The Big Nurse then calls over to McMurphy and says, though she is thankful that he is introducing himself on the ward, now is not the time, and that he needs to take his orders and have a shower. For a bunch of people in a mental hospital there is a whole lot of decent sense making going on.'One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest' by Ken Kesey is an exploration of social stigma, overbearing control and fighting for the defenceless. The overbearing power of The Combine matched with the machinery of the institution forms a force that seeks to bring order by squashing all before it. Taking place in a mental hospital, it's narrated by one of the patients (The Chief) as he watches the slick newcomer (Randall McMurphy) as he battles the personification of these processes (Nurse Ratched). I summarised the book as follows. "It's a rather bleak story overall but this hits afterwards as during the reading it's mostly amusing. What I really enjoyed were the solid characters that popped out for their uniqueness. It's a great book but I wouldn't put it in my best of all time as many people seem to do. Although I found the themes fascinating it didn't hit as hard as I think it may have during the different era of when it was published." I hope you have a fantastic day wherever you are in the world. On September 28, 1991, the Tushino Airfield in Moscow hosted the Monsters of Rock international music festival. AC/DC, Metallica, the Black Crowes, and Pantera all performed, while the metal band Electro Shock Therapy represented the Soviet Union. The event attracted a crowd of more than 500,000 people, making it the largest rock concert in the history of both the USSR and the Russian Federation. There were also violent clashes between the public, the police, and even the military, which was summoned from neighboring areas to maintain order. Journalist Alexander Morsin gathered accounts from the festival's organizers and headliners and tracked down what was written abroad about the event in its glorious aftermath. Joe and Rob talk about things that should never have been, scientific experiments and ideas that were evil or just egregiously wrong. They use four examples: The Tuskegee long-term syphilis experiments, lobotomy, electroshock therapy, and Nazi science (and how much of US technology is based upon it today). This might be a tough listen, but education is sometimes sobering.

Electroconvulsive therapy still has a stigma, with the reputation of being a painful, disturbing procedure that wipes out memories and, if movies are to be believed, even creates zombies. Experts explain the reality—that ECT is a quiet procedure that provokes a short brain seizure, releasing huge amounts of neurotransmitters to reset the brain in what is the quickest and most dependable treatment for severe and often suicidal depression.

The last Toughest Mudder of 2019 was last week, just outside Las Vegas, Nevada. Toughest Mudder West was held at the same venue World's Toughest Mudder was held from 2014-2017. The men's and women's winners of Toughest Mudder West are Jake Ramsby and Jennifer Lynn. Jake and Jennifer join the show to talk about their race, their plans for World's Toughest Mudder, and what they thought about the "Dizzy Bat" penalty for Electroshock Therapy. Before he talks with them though, Will talks about his disappointing race at Toughest Mudder West and how he plans to run 50 miles at World's Toughest Mudder 2019. Detective Henry Lovern forces Floyd, Joe, and Bobby to rendezvous in a sleepy little town north of Palm Beach. All three have murder on their minds.
You may have heard about them or seem something about them in a movie. Maybe you’ve heard why they should be done or that they are safe. But were prefrontal lobotomies really effective and safe? And is ECT, the modern name for electroshock therapy is it safe or effective? Or is it’s current day use...

Kiss of Mud - Hier hängt def Stscheldraht tiefer, also: Hintern runter! 2. Mystery Obstacle - wird erst am jeweiligen Eventtag enthüllt. 3. Everest - ein Abschnitt ist höher. 4. Pyramid Scheme - hier kommt die Latte in der Mitte zurück. 5. Hydrophobia - noch dunkler und enger. 6. Spread Eagle - weiter auseinander. Übt schonmal Spagat. 7. Augustus Gloop - noch enger und schwierigere Leiter. 8. Gauntlet - statt Planc gibt es Just the Tipp am Ende. 9. Black Widow - ihr dürft nur die Farbigen Slack Lines benutzen. 10. Leap of Faith - Übt schonmal Springen und Klettern: das Netz ist so Kurz, dass ihr nur mit den Armen in dem Netz hängt.

In this episode of ScrubCaps, Nathan talks about some weird and crazy old medical practices that we still use today! Our reasoning for using some of these methods may have been slightly skewed but maybe history had a few things right. With new technology, we have uncovered the true health benefits of some of these methods. As much as it pains me to say, spirits don't live in your body. Or at least not that we know of yet :) Join Nathan as he talks about some interesting practices.ScrubCaps: Every Monday! Listen on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify, Google Podcasts and more!Want more? This is the most obstacle-heavy episode we've ever had. Over 90 minutes of Tough Mudder talk with Jim "Da Goat" Campbell. Jim has been a guest on the show several times before, but we have never talked about his personal brush with death and what brought him to Tough Mudder. After a motorcycle accident nearly killed him on a highway in Texas, Jim was written off by the paramedics on scene, by the cops that arrived later, and by the Doctors at the hospital. Jim says his personal philosophy of "Goat Tough" was born in that hospital bed. Jim is one of the most well-known members of the Tough Mudder community and is one of the few people to have run in every World's Toughest Mudder since it began in 2011. Jim was the first man to complete 100 Tough Mudder events, leading the way for Joe Perry and Joe Anderson to join him this year. Tough Mudder NorCal will be Grant’s first Tough Mudder as a married man, as he is getting married this weekend. Congratulations Grant, and welcome to the family Coral. [UNPLUGGED FORMAT] In this episode of the podcast, Michael Drane, our resident psycho-therapist is joined once again, by fellow clinician, Justin Krause, to discuss Electro-Shock Therapy. A listener on Twitter wrote in to the show and asked about Electro-shock therapy and whether or not it was effective. Michael and Justin also get into some other ridiculous cures over the years like lobotomies. We hope you enjoy the show! ► We are not bystanders in today's culture, and we're willing to bet: Neither are you. Walter Lyon joins us to talk about World's Toughest Mudder and Team Four Eyes. Before we talk to Walter, Will gives us an update on Tough Mudder Arizona along with an audio clip of Clinton Jackson encouraging Neil and Amanda Gerard through Electroshock Therapy. After you hear the audio, track down the video. It's great. Chad Trammell talked with Matt B. Davis on the Obstacle Racing Media podcast. We listen to some clips of the interview and break down Chad's schedule vs. Ryan Atkins schedule. As it stands, Chad and Ryan will only face each other at one more Toughest Mudder, possibly two depending on how Ryan does in the Spartan US Championship Series. We also get a quick recovery update from Amelia Boone. Spoiler: She did a Spartan Race last week and had a great time. Team Four Eyes is made of Walter, Joe Van Dyke, KC Hereth, and occasionally features guest stars Amelia Boone and Cassie Harris. KC is the motivator. Walter says “He can motivate a rock into doing a somersault”. Joe Van Dyke is the ironman triathlete on the team. He’s got 130 triathalons under his belt. He NEVER gets tired. Walter is the team captain/secretary. Walter prefers the title of captain instead of secretary though. Walter has been at every WTM since 2011. He is one of just a few people who can say that. He talks about how difficult that first year was, and how 2014 was similar to 2011. Walter also ran Tougher Mudder this weekend in Arizona. We talk about the competitive series and his plans for Toughest Mudder this year. Who would you like to hear on the podcast? Kevin Chow joins us to talk about how much he loves Electroshock Therapy. (It's a lot.) Kevin has done WTM three times and has completed over 25 Tough Mudder events. Just for fun, we reopen the "Do you count event days or laps" can of worms. Kevin has spent most of his Tough Mudder career on the west coast of the U.S. He talks about his top two favorite courses, Tahoe and Whistler, and why they're great. Kevin also talks about his plan for Toughest Mudder in L.A. and his unusual nutrition strategy. It involves beer. Thanks to everyone who has left a kind word on the World's Toughest Mudder Community page about the podcast. 100-Miler Kris Mendoza left a comment on the page about episode 001 that we talk about before the conversation with Kevin. If you have a comment for the show or an idea for a guest, leave a comment on the WTM Community page or write a review on iTunes. Be sure to subscribe and listen for new episodes every Tuesday.
In this episode I talk to Sean Corvelle. We talk about some new obstacles, and obstacles no longer at Tough Mudder, such as the new Arctic Enema 3.0 and why it scared me so bad as well as Electro Shock Therapy and some experiences there. Sean talks about fear and how it applies in Tough Mudder and why it really is a good thing. I finish up by asking Sean about his start line speech at all Tough Mudder events, and what he does different at Worlds Toughest Mudder. Lastly, Sean shares some last minute motivation for you Worlds Toughest Mudders out there. Make sure you are following everything we are doing by taking a look at our Instagram, Facebook and joining our mailing list!
