She is a self-proclaimed “mountain adventure addict,” and her long list of accomplishments includes the 2017 & 2018 World’s Toughest Mudder Champion, overall winner of the 2020 Grand Traverse, and a second place finish with her team at the Eco Challenge Fiji. After retiring from gymnastics at the age of 17, Rea moved from her home in Slovenia to California to study at UC Berkeley and was quickly introduced to the world of trail running. From there, she discovered obstacle course racing and found that her background as a gymnast and trail runner made her a perfect fit for the sport. Rea shares how she has seen the sport evolve over her career, and she breaks down all of the different kinds of obstacle course racing. She also gives us an inside look of what made her team successful at Eco Challenge Fiji, and their plans for redemption in 2021. Alyssa tells us about her experience this week as a poll observer, and we are sending out a great big THANK YOU to our listeners for 500k listens. Thanks to PATH Projects for sponsoring this episode! Visit pathprojects.com "The World's Toughest Race" - probably is! After a 17 year absence, Bear Grylls brings back Eco-Challenge on steroids, with a massive budget and plenty of stories, all on a bigger and badder course. The 417 miles on Fiji, included all kinds of paddling, trekking, biking, ropes, and wading through hypothermia-inducing cold water; the 66 teams were given 11 days to finish, and for 22 teams, that wasn't enough. The 10-part series on Amazon Prime is definitely worth watching. Danelle and Rea were there. Both outstanding athletes, they provide us with great insights on E-C as they participated at opposite ends of the spectrum. Danelle (Podcast #35) was on Team Endure, which garnered the most TV time of the entire show, as it featured her friends Mark Macy, who has done every single E-C and now has Alzheimer's disease, supported by his son and top racer Travis Macy. Rea (Podcast #75) was on Team Canada, which got no camera time, as the E-C staff had not heard of them. Which was a big mistake, as they also had Ryan Atkins (18 FKTs and Podcast #73), who like Rea is a top Obstacle Course Racer. They finished a strong second. Both have applied for E-C 2021, so stay tuned! Rea will stick with her team, and now that Mark has retired, Team Endure will add their former AR teammate Dave Mackey! Look out...

About this episode:In this week’s episode, coach Hillary talks with professional obstacle course racer Rea Kolbl about her evolution as an athlete, how she adapts to the unpredictable situations she has encountered both in life and races, and why she purposefully tries new things that are outside of her comfort zone.Guest Bio – Rea Kolbl:Rea Kolbl is a professional athlete in love with the outdoors. While her primary sport is obstacle course racing (OCR), she loves any kind of self-propelled motion outside, especially in the mountains. Rea grew up in Slovenia, where sports always played a big part in her life; she was on the national gymnastics team for most of her childhood. After moving to America, she slowly fell in love with trail running, until miles on trails brought her back to her life as an athlete. After finishing her master’s in materials science and engineering at Stanford, she moved to Boulder, Colorado, to take a chance on a life as a full-time athlete. In the past couple of years, Rea has won three 24-hour OCR Ultra World Championships and remains undefeated at endurance OCR of 30 miles or longer. Colorado helped her find a new love of adventure: she also learned how to mountain bike, backcountry ski and climb. Most recently, Rea participated in an expedition adventure race hosted by Bear Grylls in Fiji, a 700-kilometre-plus journey that taught her so much about herself, life and what a true adventure can be like. The Stoke Factor goes up a notch with Rea Kolbl and Trever Townsend in the room (or on the trail): “We just like to sign up for things we have no idea how to do, then figure it out!” Rea Kolbl was a competitive gymnast in her native Slovenia, then while earning a Masters Degree in Engineering at Stanford University, realized she could make more money Obstacle Course Racing than indoors teaching Grad students, so she walked out the door and hasn’t looked back. She has never been beaten in an OCR over 30 miles in length, prefers Skyraces to trail races, and really enjoyed Fiji in September for the Eco Challenge hosted by Bear Grylls. Trever Townsend never says, “I can’t do this”, while running and OCR all over the world. “I call it the 'Rudy genetics': I learned if I was going to hang with these guys I’d be dealing with a lot more pain, so I embraced it.” Is OCR for you? Listening to these two, it sounds like a great idea. “I like the challenge of unpredictability. It was snowing, the wind chill was about 6 degrees, and we had to swim in an alpine lake. The ladies cried for two hours." Their biggest project ever is, “Scale Slovenia” this May. Their version of “Lowest to Highest” in Slovenia entails free-diving to the lowest point at a depth of 120’ in the Mediterranean sea, swimming 300 meters to shore, cycling 130 miles, then climbing the highest summit in Slovenia. He also won individual titles in 2014 and 2017 as well as winning team titles in 2015, 2016, and 2018. His 2016 team performance with Jon Albon of 105 miles earned them the bonus prize of $100,000. Atkins also holds the record for highest mileage at a single WTM with 110 miles in 2017. Atkins is undoubtedly the greatest athlete in endurance OCR. Rea Kolbl is the reigning women’s champion of World’s Toughest Mudder. Her win in Atlanta in 2018 was a successful defense of her first win in Las Vegas 2017. With her back-to-back wins in 2017 and 2018 she became the first back-to-back individual winner since Amelia Boone in 2014 and 2015. Johnny Luna-Lima had the race of his life this weekend at Spartan Big Bear. He beat Ryan Atkins and the field for his first win of the 2019 Spartan US Series Championship and his first podium at a US Spartan Race ever. With his second-place finish Ryan Atkins has all but guaranteed he will win the 2019 Spartan US Championship when the final points are totaled after the upcoming final race in the series. On the women's side Lindsay Webster held off Rea Kolbl and Nicole Mericle for the win and moved into sole possession of first-place in the US series. Lindsay Webster and Nicole Mericle have won every race in the 2019 US Series Championship. With her third-place finish Nicole Mericle finds herself 24 points behind Lindsay Webster. Although she is technically behind Webster, due to the point structure of the US Series, she will be able to pass Webster in Utah for the series win as long as she does two things: 1) Finish no worse than 4th. 2) Finish ahead of Webster To state it simply: If Nicole Mericle can beat Lindsay Webster in Utah, she will become the first woman not named Lindsay Webster to win the Spartan US Championship Series. Lindsay Webster has won the series every year since it's inception in 2016. If Lindsay Webster beats Nicole Mericle in Utah she will defend her title and become the four-time defending champion of the Spartan US Championship Series. --- Welcome to The OCR Report Podcast!  We are the only podcast to focus exclusively on the Elite SPORT side of Obstacle Course Racing.
