Welcome back to HappyPorch Radio: the circular economy technology podcast! In this special episode our host Barry O'Kane is joined by Charlotte Morley, CEO of thelittleloop, and Ryan Atkins, CEO of Supercycle, to discuss the ripple effects of - ongoing and very fluid - changes to US tariffs and De Minimis import rules on the circular economy in the UK, EU, and US. The conversation, which originated from a passionate exchange on LinkedIn, explores both the opportunities and challenges these potential policy changes present for circularity-focused businesses. The discussion ranges widely from there, covering everything from policy to the importance of smaller, ethical brands to circularity. We discussed how reduced ease of importing low-cost new goods could boost demand for resale and second-hand markets, potentially benefiting the circular economy. While acknowledging the long-term benefits, our guests explained that many small ethical and sustainable brands are already overwhelmed by rising costs, market saturation from fast-fashion giants like Shein and Temu, and how, potentially, additional pressure from tariffs could undermine the "feedstock" of quality products essential for a thriving circular economy. Both guests stress the importance of empathy and support for brands navigating these tough times. They discuss how circularity enablers like their own companies must make circular business models (like takeback and resale programs) as frictionless and financially viable as possible. They also touch on the slow progress of legislation and the need for government mandates and funding to truly shift the industry toward reuse, not just recycling. The conversation concludes with a call to action for both policy involvement and practical support to ensure circularity is not just a long-term goal, but a near-term strategic advantage for businesses.Tune in to learn about how there is, despite current difficulties, a sense of cautious optimism: more brands are beginning to prioritise circularity, although slowly. This podcast is brought to you by HappyPorch. Alyssa Godesky has some range in the long events. Her first ultra was the JFK 50 miler, a race she needed to run in order to get onto the US Naval Academy marathon team, which she did. She returned to JFK a few years later and got 3rd, securing her a spot in the Western States Endurance Race, her first 100 miler. She then turned to triathlon under the guidance of the legendary Hilary Biscay and quickly got her pro card. Racing all over the world and training for triathlon did not dampen her trail running spirits, as she allowed herself one or two ultras a year. She has gone past 100 milers a handful of times, including setting the FKT in 2018 for the Vermont Long Trail in 5d2h37m, which was covered by ESPN. She coaches athletes, hosts the IronWoman podcast and continues to race professional triathlon. In this episode, Ellie and Alyssa cover a while range of topics including the perfect push-up, running JFK, traveling all over the world for triathlon and going pro, working with Hilary Biscay, the hardest part of FKTs and much more. On Monday, August 17th Alyssa will be racing Sarah Keyes for the Adirondack 46er FKT currently held by Ryan Atkins in 3d5h. She explains how she's trained for it, what her strategy is and whether there will be a sprint to the finish. She is raising money for The Paden Institute and Retreat for Writers of Color which fosters the development for emerging BIPOC writers by providing them the opportunity to create works of prose on the shores of Lake Champlain in New York. Not only has Sarah been nabbing local CRs and climbing mountains, on Monday August 17th, she will begin her longest and hardest FKT yet, the 150ish mile Adirondack 46er. The record is currently held by Ryan Atkins of OCR fame in 3 days, 5 hours and 52 minutes, set last July. Not only will she be attempting this feat, which she has had her eye on for a long time, she will also be RACING another elite female, Alyssa Godesky to the finish. (Stay tuned for the next episode for our interview with Alyssa!) In this episode Ellie and Sarah dive deep into Sarah's plans for this run. She has scouted the whole course, and is a bit nervous about bush-whacking through some parts. She explains how the idea to "race" Alyssa came about and whether she will sprint to the finish to beat her. Sarah talks about race nutrition and preparing both her body and mind to run for that long. Something we all wonder, do these FKTs feel like racing? How does one stay in the game mentally, when it's not hours, but days? Does the racing mindset hold on the whole time? Towards the later half of the episode, Sarah and Ellie discuss what her sponsorship looks like right now and whether Sarah feels a pull to remain relevant and do something worth noting. They talk about having multiple jobs to support the mountaineer lifestyle and whether it's worth it to make it work. Sarah is sponsored by La Sportiva, Tailwind and Julbo. Spartan has officially purchased Tough Mudder! This is the biggest news in the OCR industry since the OCR industry became a thing approximately 10 years ago. We open the episode with a brief discussion of the Spartan/Tough Mudder purchase story so far. It has been an emotional journey. This past weekend was the first race of the 2020 Spartan US National Series in Jacksonville, Florida. Ryan Atkins and Lindsay Webster took home the wins for the men and the women. On today's episode, we talk with the top four male finishers about their race in Jacksonville. We will talk with the top female finishers in future episodes. (Note on that below). Each man we talked with had a slightly different take on the race, and we talked about slightly different topics with each one. Ryan Atkins commented on OCR and social media during the off-season. Veejay Jones also touched on social media and the lengths people go to document their workouts. Ryan Kempson talked about his one-second win over Ryan Woods for 3rd Place and Ryan Woods talked about the non-controversy that was his Herc Hoist. We need your help! Today is a LONG episode with four separate interviews. The top women from Jacksonville will each have shorter, individual episodes. Would you prefer one longer episode or several shorter episodes? Let us know in a review on Apple Podcasts and we will read it on a future episode. Who knew?  One day as I was surfing social media, I hear Ryan Atkins mention that Platinum Rig is bringing a 24 hour competition to the states!!!  Like most enthusiasts, I've heard of this line of rigs and how formidable they were. Does anyone remember Battle Frog?  They introduced some of these rigs in their…Read more →
