Founded in 2021, WRL is a community of Black, Indigenous and People of Color runners seeking to expand their presence in a sport that they don't often see themselves in. Tara's biography: "An Appalachian Trail thru-hike inspired me to spend as much time on trails as possible; now, I am a professional ultramarathon trail athlete racing all over the country. My favorite ultramarathon distance is the 100-miler because there are so many possibilities for adventure, but I also love the competitive aspect of setting FKTs on longer trail routes. The FKTs I've set include the Mountains-to-Sea Trail (1,175 miles), Benton MacKaye Trail (289 miles), the Colorado Trail (486 miles) and now the Appalachian Trail (2,189 miles)" We followed Tara's journey on Instagram throughout August and September, virtually cheering her on as she stacked 17 hour days, upon days. Like all great trail runners, Tara, surrounded by a great crew - her mom, her friends, trail running mentors and buds (all with great trail nicknames) accomplished an amazing feet of endurance. His latest project is the FloatRun Harness, a simple tool that acts like a form coach, promoting efficient, low-impact running form. It chokes the snow blower and gets very heavy.  Then, even worse, if you don't move it and it freezes it becomes solid ice.  And it's going to stay there until spring.  But I got most of it up, which is good because now the rain will helpfully wash the remnants I missed away. In our neck of the woods it's known as Heart-attack snow.  Because it gets so heavy that when people try to shovel it they keel over.  For people like me with a strong heart it's more appropriately chiropractor snow.  Because when you go to throw a shovel full of that slush you're more than likely going to hurt your back.  Now it's just pouring rain and windy.  Glad I don't have a run on the calendar for today.  The running is going well. I did a test mile yesterday, which was another interesting weather day.  It was minus 1 degrees Fahrenheit when I got up.  It was about 6 degrees when I got to the rail trail.  The temperature was cold, but it was windless and sunny.  It was not a bad day to run.  I found out from my Buddy Tim who lives by the rail trail that they had plowed a section and it was dry and clear.  Which was perfect for the workout I had.  It was a one mile warm up.  A test mile.  And a three-mile cool down.  You're supposed to do these workouts on the track, but the track is under a layer of snow and ice so that isn't going to happen.  It was hard to warm up with the temperature.  I hit the test mile and felt pretty strong for the first 1/2.  The last ½ was a struggle.  Looking at the data, I can see my pace drop and my HR max out in that second half.  So I still have some work to do with my fitness.  That being said, it was 30 seconds or so faster than when I ran it on the track in December.  It's a good measuring stick.   Now I know I need to work on aerobic fitness and pacing. I'm only running 15 – 20 miles a week, 2-3 times a week so I'm happy to be where I am at all.  The knee is hanging in there. It is just about 11 months since the injury popped up.  The holidays were good.  I took a week off, but caught a cold from my mother, so I spent most of it lying around.  It might be the time of year, but I find my energy level very low right now.  Now that we're back to work I'm incredibly busy and struggling to keep my head on straight.  Today we are going to catch up with Cody O'Connor who is still walking across the country.  Very interesting conversation. My normal editor Dimitry from Moscow was busy, so Carlos the Jackal di the edit on this one.  Thank you Carlos.  In section one I'll talk some more about how to begin a fitness practice as part of my beginner series.  In section two I'll talk to Sigmond Freud about how I feel about not running Boston this year. I've signed up for the Calm meditation app and have been working my way through some of those.  The ones I've been doing are more instructional.  They talk about a topic and how to approach it in your meditation.  One I was listening to this week talked about how when you have pain in your life your need to accept the pain, not fight it.  Because, when you fight it, you give it energy.  The key is to accept it.  Then it loses its ability to hurt you. The other thing is not letting thoughts of the past or the future give you stress.  To return to the now, because that's the state you can control.  It reminded me of the racing advice I've always given you.  When things get hard relax into the pain.  Be present where you are and focus on relaxing into the stress.  In this way you defang the pain and allow your best self to compete. Try that. On with the show.         About Zero ZERO — The End of Prostate Cancer is the leading national nonprofit with the mission to end prostate cancer. Lisa DeNardo is a badass single mom to five amazing kids who has overcome some huge life obstacles. She loves to play in the mountains, enjoying ski/snowboard and hiking adventures with her kids. Lisa was in a 7-year marriage, filled with domestic violence and abuse, and it was life or death. Through the help of Victims of Prevention, they secretly moved, got legal help and counseling, and completely rebuilt their life. Lisa is strength personified! As a kid, Lisa forged a deep connection to running, recalling vividly how the cinder track felt beneath her feet the first time she won a race at a Jessie Owens Meet when she was 8 years old. Lisa had real talent as a runner, competing all four years in the 4x400 at Penn Relays. She earned a scholarship to run at West Chester State, but gave it up because she was feeling the pressure of how to make it all work and decided to focus on Art at school. Fast forward 20 years, to the onset of the pandemic. When others were out in search of toilet paper, Lisa went out and scored a pair of running shoes. It was time to get reacquainted with her old friend. She laced 'em up and ran every day with her son, who runs high school cross country. Sharing miles together was special and lit the fire, and her love of mountains and play led her to her new love—Ultrarunning. "Lacing up those running shoes when there was nothing to do but run felt like the return of an old familiar friend. It felt powerful. Like, here we are again. Let's get to it. We've got unfinished business." Lisa won some age group awards at trail races, worked her way back from a stress fracture in her foot, and recently finished her 1st Ultra at the JFK 50 Mile. Once Lisa saw that she still carried her passion and drive for running, she jumped all-in to ambassador programs for Altra Running, UltrAspire, and Bigger than the Trail, and connecting with other athletes through these communities has been a game-changer. I'm so grateful for Lisa sharing her amazing journey and I'm excited to follow her adventures! I hope you all enjoy this convo as much as we did! When she's not out adventuring along the trails of Colorado's Front Range, Kriste is likely writing about it or recovering with carbs in a local eatery.  Her work has been published in Trail Runner Magazine, Outdoor Research, Altra Running's Run Better blog, Outside Magazine, Elevations Outdoors, and others. As Program Manager for the Women's Wilderness Trailblazers program, she creates nature-based events that cultivate a greater sense of agency, community, and engagement in nature among women of color.  Kriste offers talks that address increasing the representation of people of color in nature. She has facilitated workshops, participated in panels, and delivered online trainings at conferences such as PGM One, Outdoor Retailer, REI, Summit Sisters, and more. She serves on the board of Running Start nonprofit, an organization dedicated to helping women overcome obstacles to fitness. She is a trail running coach for Life's Too Short Fitness, has coached for Black Girls Run, and led nature-based outings for organizations that include CitiWild and Outdoor Afro. In addition to her passion for introducing women and people of color to new narratives of wellness, she is the founder of the Black and Brown Women's Alliance, which provides mindfulness-based in-person and online events that prioritize wellness, self-care, and collective healing. “Giving yourself grace to meet yourself where you are on that day”  I love this quote from Kriste.  Talking to Kriste is a wonderful, enlightening  experience.  Hearing her talk about her love of the outdoors makes you want to lace up and head right outside.  On this episode Kriste talks about how being mindful and meditation has improved her life.  We discuss how she is empowering other women and what she is most passionate about as well as the importance of self-care. I had a few light bulb moments as I listened.  We also talk about her community involvement and where change still needs to happen.  Kriste is someone we could talk to for hours. Enjoy! Ryan Montgomery and Zach Bitter are no strangers to doing really hard things over long distances. Zach holds the world records for both the 100-mile distance by time and for distance run over 12 hours at 104.88 miles. Ryan just finished second at the Javelina 100, earning a golden ticket for the Western States 100, and he earned a spot on Team USA for the 24-Hour World Championships with a 154.71-mile performance over 24 hours last December.  Together, they join us for our most in-depth conversation to date on the clean sport culture in the trail/ultra world. We start with a story from Ryan on an innocent visit to the doctor that could have inadvertently resulted in him committing a doping violation. From there, we talk about the need for more education and openness on the topic of clean sport in the trail/ultra community. We discuss drug testing in the sport including Ryan and Zach's history with it (or lack thereof). We cover strict liability, IVs, marijuana/THC use in ultras, and the challenges of enforcing clean sport culture in this corner of the competitive running world without a governing body. Finally, we discuss the roles of various stakeholders to build and sustain the clean sport culture in trail/ultras including athletes, events, brands, and fans. We asked Ryan and Zach the hard questions, and just like in big races, they didn't back down. Thank you to both of them for their willingness to dig deep. We also owe a special thanks again to Altra Running for hosting us in their booth at The Running Event, for supporting these two amazing athletes, and for being a brand that cares about clean sport.

"The biggest thing that I just want to stop feeling, that I continue to feel, is the time that I spent in my career being fake." - Alysia Montaño.  Alysia has joined us on 2 episodes already so you know her story well. She is a 7-time US Champion. She is an Olympian, and she has two bronze medals from the World Championships that were stolen by dopers and eventually awarded to her many years later. You may not know, however, that she is still in an ongoing battle more than 11 years later to recover $60,000 in prize money that was also stolen from her at those two events. For Alysia, it's not about the money. It's the principle that matters, and she is challenging World Athletics, the IOC, the USOPC, and USADA on this issue to set a new precedent for future athletes who might end up in the same situation.  She gives us the play-by-play on that challenge while also catching us up on the latest in her life with 3 kids, her first Spartan obstacle course race, and the important work of her non-profit &Mother. This is a tough conversation at times, but in the end, we do talk about hope and where she goes to find it. Thank you to Alysia for never shying away from the tough issues and for her commitment to leaving the sport better than she found it.  Also, special thanks to Alysia's sponsor Altra Running, signer of the Clean Sport Collective brand pledge, for hosting us in their booth for this recording during The Running Event in Austin, TX last week.

Greetings Glocal Citizens! Earlier this month the world's eyes turned to Tokyo, Japan for the long awaited 2020 Summer Olympics which inspired me to connect with a former Stanford University track and field teammate, five-time Olympian Jacqueline "Jackie" Edwards-Flowers. Representing The Bahamas, she competed in the Long Jump and was ranked as high as 5th in the World. In her 17-year career as a professional track and field athlete Jackie's accomplishments include 2-time NCAA Champion and 5-time All-American while at Stanford. She also competed in a record nine consecutive outdoor World Championships. Following her athletic career, Jackie was a certified personal trainer with the National Academy of Sports Medicine and had a flourishing coaching/personal training business in Los Angeles, California. She worked with a wide range of clients from middle and high school aged kids to adults and professional athletes as a coach, a trainer and a Sport Psychology Consultant. Five years ago, Jackie decided to take on a new challenge and transition into the very competitive field of event planning. She always had a passion for creating beautiful spaces and memorable events but with no formal training in this industry, it was no easy task. However, her years of overcoming obstacles and rising to the occasion, along with her “if it's hard, let me try it” attitude, helped her to set her sights on her new goal. Her journey began in interior design and has progressed into a career where her feet are firmly planted as the Project and Special Events Coordinator in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences at California State University, Northridge where she truly feels that the sky is the limit. Recently, while working from home due to the pandemic, Jackie was spurred to add to her portfolio by creating a full-service home staging business, Gold Medal Home Staging & Design. She launched her company in late October 2020 and has already completed 30 projects. She says that her work at CSUN is her job and her staging business is her joy and that the combination of the two is extremely fulfilling. Where to find Jackie? For instance instead of 20 reps with 15 pound dumbbells you might do 8 reps with 30 pound dumbbells.  The difference is that the lower reps produce strength and muscle mass while the lower weight, higher reps result in less muscle mass and more endurance.  I have been getting 3 or more bike rides in each week with a longer ride on the weekend.  Typically I‘ll do an hour and change on the weekdays and 2-3 hours on the weekend.  I backed off on trying to run after the previous week's fiasco.  When I first joined the gym I jumped on the treadmill but it was awful.  I haven't been on a treadmill in 18 months.  I had forgotten how awful it is.  Then I made a huge mistake and tried to use one of the old LifeCycle bikes in the gym.  The problem is that the angles are so different from an actual bicycle that it really tweaked my knee.  But I have started again this week.  Sunday, I ran an easy 5k on the roads with my club.  We were able to all get together and have a brunch for the first time in a year and a half so that was joyous.  Tuesday, I did another easy 5k on the rail-trail, pain free.  And yesterday I did a whopping 40 minutes of road and rail trail with some hills and trail sections, again pain free.  Pretty happy about that.  I'm so hilariously out of shape that I have to get used to running being hard.  I have to watch out for all the beginner runner things like blisters and chaffing and Achilles tendonitis.  Today we are talking with a nice young man Cody, who is aspiring to do a cross country run to support families dealing with cancer in a child.  It's a good story.  He's a positive influencer.  In section one I'll talk a bit about an observation that all the records for running are falling and why.  In section two I'll talk about a current phenomena that is being called the ‘turnover tsunami', but I think it should be called the ‘JobQuake'.  So Ollie is doing fine.  It's my habit to take him for a walk when I get up in the morning.  This week I got up went down stairs and when I looked out the front door there was a rabbit sitting in the front lawn.  I thought, ‘well that's going to make Ollie crazy', but what can you do.  So, I sat to put my shoes on.  When I got back up to put the leash on Ollie, I looked out to see if the rabbit was still there.  And there was a big owl sitting on top of the rabbit looking at me.  Not kidding.  A bit of a Wild Kingdom moment.  The owl looks at me for awhile and I guess decided I was scary, it takes off and the rabbit runs away.  One of those early morning things where your have to scratch your head and wonder.  Sometimes life is just being in the right place at the right time. All-in-all I can't complain.  I'm reasonably healthy, the days are long and the weather is nice.  Feels good to be taking it easy in the summertime.  I have managed to lose 10 of the 20 pounds I had found.  It doesn't come off as fast when you're not running.  I'm not a naturally slender person and I have to work at it.  That's one of the reasons I'm lifting is to build up some more muscle, not just to be stronger, but to burn more calories.  I ordered a couple new short sleeve shirts from Amazon.  I needed some new bike shorts anyhow so I figured I might as well get up to the free shipping.  I ordered them as mediums.  My whole life I ordered large shirts.  Now I'm wearing medium.  Not sure if I got smaller or they adjusted the sizes.  Probably a little of both.  This week is Prime Day for all you techy folks who need new gadgets.  I don't have a Prime membership.  I leach off my daughter's membership for the Prime video.  I don't buy enough stuff to make it worth it.  I really don't need my orders to come same day.  Call me old, but I like waiting for the stuff to come.  You forget about it and when it shows up it's a nice surprise.  I found another, hopefully better, dog training center for Ollie.  It's up in New Hampshire.  We'll see if they can help me with his aggressive behavior.  He's even more nuts than normal when he can't run.  I'm telling people I had to go out of state with him because he's exhausted all the local trainers.  Not sure what my plans are for the rest of the summer.  I've gotten a couple runs in this week pain free.  I'll go out with the club tomorrow and see how it feels.  If I can keep stringing pain free runs in maybe I can get back into the woods, just in time for deer fly season.  That would help Ollie.  It's ironic.  I remember when Buddy was a puppy back in the early 2000's, I crashed my truck and smashed my knee.  That was in the late summer and it took me a year to get back in shape – I ended up requalifying at that rail trail marathon in Baltimore the following Thanksgiving.  So, yeah irony.  New dog.  Smashed the other knee.  But it all works out.  My garden is growing well.  Being home and able to water it every day is helpful, even though the weather has been weird.  I've already started harvesting lettuces and should have peas in the next couple weeks.  But, the best garden story is the mint. I have this mint that we had growing at our house when I was a kid.  I transplanted some into my garden.  This stuff is a weed.  It grows everywhere and you can't kill it.  It's the family mint.  Which is nice and everything but what do you do with it?  I know people will say mint jelly and such but that's all a ruse.  I'm not making mint jelly.  So basically I just weed it out of my garden every year.  But, this year, being still working from home, I discovered the fresh mint makes awesome tea.  I'm drinking some right now  You just throw some leaves into your cup and pour hot water over it and Bam! You have excellent mintyness.  Finally, I know there is a lot of change going on.  There has been change going on for the last couple years.  Lots of chaos.  And I know that has an impact on people. I'm going to give you a simple thought to help with that chaos.  Think about it this way.  You are an island in the sea of chaos.  What can you do in your little boat out there in the crashing waves of chaos?  You get to choose.  And what you choose makes a difference. You can choose to be an island of chaos in the chaos or you can choose to be an island of calm in the chaos.  When you choose to be an island of calm there is nothing that the chaos can do to hurt you.  It can't get to you.  You choose to be ok.  You choose to be happy.  You choose to not ignore the chaos, but to let it flow around you.  When you choose to be this island of calm, you'll notice that others are drawn to your calm.  You are a leader.  You become the gravity well that sucks others in and then you can work together to find a path through the chaos. You get to choose.  Through your attitude and actions. Are you an island of chaos or an island of calm? Be the island of calm in the chaos. And I'll see you out there.   MarathonBQ – How to Qualify for the Boston Marathon in 14 Weeks - Rachel -> Coach Jeff ->

Thank you for tuning into "Starting Small", a podcast about brand development, entrepreneurship, and innovation in the modern world. In this episode, I am joined by Jeremy Howlett, co-founder of Altra Running, one of the top manufactures of road and trail running shoes. Jeremy grew up in Utah, where he was nurtured with an entrepreneurship mindset for discovery and marketing. As contrary as it may sound, Jeremy was not a runner, nor into running growing up. His aunt and uncle owned a running shoe store, where his cousin began to modify customers existing shoes, to fit their stride needs. Realizing the demand for this modification and no existence in the current market, Jeremy proposed to create and sell these shoes from scratch... enter Altra. Altra was launched in 2009, partnering with Pulse Labs, an engineering firm at Brigham Young University, and with contract manufacturers in Asia. They were able to create this shoe that enabled runners to correctly form their stride, with the right heel angle. Jeremy and the team quickly found massive success, winning awards in Runners World Magazine, Competitor Magazine, Men's Journal, and more. The company has grew at a major annual revenue growth rate, and has been fully acquired by VF Corporation in 2018. One of the best ways to support #cleansport is to buy products from companies that have signed the Clean Sport pledge. Altra Running is one of those companies.  In this episode, Shanna and Kara interview Altra co-founder Brian Beckstead. Brian shares the story of how Altra was born from his entry into the sport by following the footsteps of his older sisters to meeting his co-founder Golden Harper on the first day of high school cross-country. He and Golden went on to work together in a specialty running store where they began to modify shoes at home to balance the cushioning and provide more room for the toes to splay in the forefoot. They then tried to give their ideas away for free to established shoe companies at the time, who wouldn't listen or who ridiculed their ideas in some cases.  With no one responding, they decided to just build the shoes themselves and Altra Running was born. Brian gives several of the behind-the-scenes stories in the roller coaster journey that led Altra to be the success story it is today, including the spiritual moment near the end of a 100-mile race when he realized that the company was going to make it. Finally, Brian talks about what companies like Altra can do to support clean sport including the creative ways they are choosing to sponsor clean athletes and build the running community in grassroots ways. The fight for clean sport needs more companies like Altra to step up and set the tone with a zero tolerance policy for doping. Thank you to Brian and the full team at Altra for doing their part.

The Running for Real Podcast

The first pair of Altra Running shoes probably don’t look anything like what you have in mind. In fact, the first several hundred pairs of running shoes that co-founders Golden and Brian worked on had a variety of logos on them. Altering other running shoes is how they got their start in the shoe-making business and how they came up with their name, Altra. With a goal to fix the running shoe industry, Altra did whatever was necessary to help runners feel great and perform well. Meet Brian Brian Beckstead is a lifelong runner, but running hasn’t always been an enjoyable experience for him. He ran competitively in college but sustained four stress fractures in a short period of time that stopped him in his tracks. He took a year off of running about that time, and decided to pursue other hobbies such as fishing. However, he never escaped the running community, working at a running store all the while.  Zero Drop After Brian finished college, his friend Golden took over the running store they had been working at, and Brian left to work for another company. Not long after, Brian received a call from Golden telling him that he had altered a shoe by cutting off the heel and noticed how much better the running mechanics were. Soon, they came up with the term “Zero Drop” and were using a variety of methods to remove the heels from shoes including bandsaws and belt sanders. Golden began suggesting this alteration to chronically-injured runners that were coming into the store, and the reviews were outstanding. Longtime injuries were disappearing, and before they knew it, Golden and Brian had altered 1000 pairs of shoes for customers.  Altra is Born At the time, they didn’t really look at these alterations as a business opportunity. They simply wanted to help runners. Soon they realized that shoe brands were not interested in changing their shoes to incorporate the positives of zero drop. If these shoes were going to be made, Brian and friends either needed to buy more bandsaws, or create their own shoes. One thing led to another; soon Golden found an advanced prototype company in Oregon while Brian landed their first angel investor. “We got really lucky,” says Brian, referring to the timing of the investment. It was 2009 and startup investors were hard to come by. However, everything seemed to work out, and one inheritance and a lot of hard work later, they had their first pair of Altra running shoes—this time with their brand name on the side. Fixing the Running Industry In Latin, Altera is “to fix or mend something that is broken.” From the beginning, that has been the goal of Altra. Even before it existed as a shoe company, its founders were doing unconventional things to try to help runners. Creating a wide toe box by skipping the bottom two eyelets when lacing a shoe, or literally cutting off pieces of a shoe—these were simply the best improvements they could do at the time. Now Altra is a global company, with resources to make the best possible shoe for all runners. Their goal is to question and challenge the status quo in the running industry in order to help everyone run injury free. “[Altra] is not for the elite, fast runners,” says Brian, “Beginning runners are our favorite people to get into Altras.” Helping runners is the goal, and they have been willing to challenge many norms in that pursuit.  A Changing Industry The running industry is changing and Altra has definitely been a part of that thus far. Nearly every big brand company that makes running shoes has some type of zero drop option. Creating a shoe that encourages great running mechanics is just the beginning. Treating those they sponsor with equality is hopefully something else that starts to gain momentum in the running world. One of Altra’s core values is “disruptive.” Sometimes not a popular term among their investors, it can have a bit of a negative connotation. But the goal isn’t to be disruptive just for disruptive’s sake; it is the way to create big change. This has proved successful for Altra thus far, and should only create more positive change in the future.    Resources: Brian on Instagram Brian on Facebook Altra Running Shoes   Thank you to my wonderful sponsors Athletic Greens and Tracksmith for sponsoring this episode of the Running for Real Podcast.   Athletic Greens is a simple and easy way to get 75 vitamins, minerals, and whole food source ingredients. Recently, Scott had a friend ask him in a text, "what kind of running shoes should I buy?" Wow!  how do you answer that question with a short reply text?  One of the subjects that can monopolize a LONG training run or a ultra race is about shoes.  We all like to talk about them.  We all have our opinions and preferences.  And the stories.....we can recall races from years ago and vividly remember which shoe we ran in.  Some of us die a little when a manufacture discontinues or modifies our favorite shoes.  Who isn't guilty of going to the store and buying 5-6 pair of your favorites before they are gone? We get the unique opportunity to talk to Steven Shorter, a shoe designer for Altra Running.  He talks to us about how he became a shoe designer, the process of developing a new shoe, why shoes are always changing, some trends in running footwear...opening the curtain and giving us a sneak peak to some of the new Altra models. Make sure you listen to this podcast on a tempo run, because you might find your HR elevate a little. Our Podcast with Golden Harper, Altra Running founder.

Wonder why things are the way they are? Why brands settle for the status quo when there's obviously a better way? That's what Altra Running founder Golden Harper thought as he hacked and modified his running store customers' shoes to alleviate all types of pains. After selling thousands of altered shoes, he figured there was a market for foot-shaped, zero drop shoes, but Nike, adidas, nor any of the other big brands were interested in the tech. So he launched it himself, bringing key friends and angels on board to get the first production run going, then sold the entire copmany before the first shoe ever delivered.
